PENNANT ONE
With two rounds to play of the Sunraysia Table Tennis winter pennant three teams are vying for the top two positions on the ladder. Weightmans Packaging and Mallee Bearings currently sit at first and second with seven wins amazingly separated by only one rubber over thirteen rounds. These two teams are still to have a bye in the final two weeks which could allow fast finishing third placed Max Miller Carpets to possibly grab top position on the ladder as they play the fourth and fifth teams in the final two weeks. An exciting climax to the season is about to eventuate.
– Max Miller Carpets 6 (Joel Dorman, John Gray 2) d Weightmans Packaging 5 (Mark Dorman 3, Shane Carmichael, Peter Midgley 1)
In round thirteen action third placed Max Miller Carpets proved they are real contenders when they defeated top team Weightmans Packaging 7-4. For the Carpeters Joel Dorman and John Gray won two singles. 
Gray has had an excellent season and is a real key to the Carpeters long term chances. He accounted for Peter Midgley in straight sets in the first game of the night and then later in a vital match he outlasted Weightmans fill in Shane Carmichael 11-9 6-11 7-11 12-10 12-10. Gray also combined in the first doubles to defeat lefties Mark Dorman and Shane Carmichael in another five set struggle which was crucial to their teams success on the night.
For Weightmans Mark Dorman won three singles and team mates Shane Carmichael and Peter Midgley won a singles each however it was their inability to grab a doubles which cost their team victory.

For Fishers, Kevin Johns was back after a six week training camp in the United States where he also attended the US Open golf tournament. Only time will tell if this will help his table tennis form.
Despite winning the first two singles and later leading three rubbers to two, Fishers IGA were never really in the hunt as Mallee Bearings took control grabbing five of the last six rubbers to go on and win 7-4 leaving Fishers a difficult task now to grab the important double chance. In an even team effort Wayne Carmichael, Ed Hung and Jackson Murphy won three, two and one singles respectively as they all accounted for their opposite number.
For Fishers Andrew Cannard won two singles and Peter Bishop one. These two combined in the second doubles to defeat Wayne Carmichael and Jackson Murphy 6-11 10-12 11-8 11-6 11-6 a good come back however Fishers were left short. With two weeks to go they are currently are two games clear in fourth spot however cannot afford to relax.
PENNANT TWO
A three game haul sees Daniel Jansen return to the top of the aggregate ladder, and a cameo performance by Arnold Jago helps his team join Fishers IGA at the top of the ladder.
– Pinnacle Packers 7 (Daniel Jansen 3, Leon Brown 2, Glen Bell 1) d Fishers IGA 4 (Sony Sefer 2, Colin Moore 1)
On paper, this match appeared to be a win to Fishers. They were after all on top of the ladder, and Pinnacle Packers fifth; Fishers had won eight times this year and the Packers four. However, the late withdrawal of Fishers number two Seval Fuat changed things somewhat. Whilst Seval was replaced by the very capable Alex Keegan, Keegan also had to double up and play in the Max Miller Carpets/Mallee Bearings game. Pinnacle Packers then made the most of the opportunities that came their way, and led comfortably throughout. Leon Brown played steadily for two wins (against Colin Moore in four and a tired Alex Keegan in three in the final match). Glen Bell plugged away, losing to Sefer in four, Moore in five after leading two sets to one, but being rewarded in another five set match – against Keegan. Bell really had to hold his nerve in this encounter; after winning the first two sets confidently 11-6, 11-9 he lost the third narrowly to the tenacious Keegan 13-11. Keegan then raced away with the fourth 11-4 to square the match at two sets all. But hold his nerve he did, and Bell deservedly took the fifth 11-4.
And this match saw Daniel Jansen return to the top of the aggregate ladder. He and opposing captain Sony Sefer were locked together on 31 games all, but it was Daniel who came away with three wins. The expected tussle between these two did not eventuate, but instead turned into a dominant display by Jansen. After losing the first set 11-8, Jansen then overpowered his opponent, taking the next three sets 11-8, 11-2, 11-6. Leon Brown also joined his captain in defeating Sefer and Keegan in the first of the doubles – in a close match they took the honours after four sets 11-8, 10-12, 12-10, 11-5. And Fishers? Well, Sefer took two singles wins (against Brown in three and Bell in four) and Moore one (against Glen Bell 6-11, 11-4, 7-11, 11-6, 11-6), plus the doubles match of Sefer and Moore against the Packers Jansen and Bell in five (7-11, 6-11, 14-12, 11-5, 11-7). Pinnacle Packers won then 7 rubbers to 4 and 26 games to 17. Even though Fishers lost, they remain on top of the ladder, and are by no means a spent force.
– Max Miller Carpets 7 (Ross Humphreys, Karina Sullivan 2, Alex Keegan 1) d Mallee Bearings 4 (Trevor Gebert, Ashley Morrison 2)
Max Millers showed some of the promise which this team has had all year when they defeated Mallee Bearings in this Round 13 clash. Alex Keegan filled in for the absent captain Matthew Burns, and helped the Carpeters to a 7 rubbers to 4 win. Strong performances from evergreen Ross Humphries (2 wins) and enigmatic Karina Sullivan (2 wins), added to their wins in both doubles, and the Max Miller trio got a result which on paper should have been more regular in this competition. Captain Ross Humphreys would be happy with the performance of his number three, Karina Sullivan who chalked up her first dual victory. One win was against old 2011 Pennant Three sparring partner Steve Pongrac in five sets, after trailing 2 sets to 1. But even more impressive was her 5 set win against Mallee Bearings number two Ashley Morrison. Morrison is playing as well as ever this year, and is within three games of the top of the aggregate leader. Sullivan was in fine form, and started with her usual exuberant confident play, rushing to a 2 sets to love lead 11-8, 11-8. Morrison was by then of course scratching his head, searching for a way to get himself back into the game, and he has been around long enough to know not to panic. He therefore continued to play his own game, and slowly more and more of his trademark backhands hit the table and bounced away out of reach. Gaining confidence he fought back to take the third and fourth sets 11-8, 11-8. The fifth set was both spectacular and tense, but Sullivan it was who emerged victorious, taking it 12-10. 
Ross Humphreys had a great tussle against his opposite number Trevor Gebert in a match which determined the match result. Sets alternated throughout this match-up, and when Ross won the fifth 11-7, his team was then over the line, at that stage leading 6 rubbers to 3. Earlier in the night he had given Ashley Morrison a run for his money, but after leading after three sets, faded in the fourth and fifth, losing them 11-8, 11-9. The Carpeters were not really troubled to take both doubles, Humphreys and Keegan defeating Morrison and Gebert in four, and later Humphreys and Sullivan took a straight sets win over Morrison and Pongrac. A good win to the Carpeters, 7 rubbers to 4 and 24 games to 21, however they remain on the bottom of the ladder, and a worrying loss for Mallee Bearings as they are not yet assured of a spot in the finals. They must win one of their final two matches (assuming that Daniel Jansen’s Pinnacle Packers side win both of theirs). Pinnacle Packers have a superior percentage …
– Spanline 7 (Arnold Jago 3, Arthur Paar 2, Laurie Plummer 1) d Tankard Dental 4 (Robert Chiswell 2, Andrew Jones 1)
Arnold Jago obviously spent the recent two week break well. Wins in three singles matches, and a fighting win in his doubles with captain Arthur Paar sent him home with a smile on his face, and just as importantly helped lift his team to the top of the ladder with just two rounds remaining. 
Jago despatched Andrew Jones in three sets, and both Connor Lavery and Robert Chiswell in four. The match with Chiswell was top class, the first three sets going 12-10, 10-12, 12-10. Arnold was in such good form he then drew away from Chiswell in the fourth, taking the set and match 11-7. His doubles match went to five sets, sets alternating, and whilst none of the sets were close, the Spanline duo had the upper hand throughout taking the encounter 11-4, 7-11, 11-2, 5-11, 11-6. Arthur Paar chipped in with two wins, defeating Jones and Lavery, but going down to Robert Chiswell 8-11, 9-11, 11-8, 6-11. And Laurie Plummer also came close to two wins; he defeated Connor Lavery in straight sets, but earlier in the night he came up against Robert Chiswell. Plummer was a real chance in this contest, and with the scores at 2 sets all, the points scored by each player were identical. Chiswell went on to win 11-5, 9-11, 11-9, 5-11, 11-8. Final scores then, 7 rubbers to Spanline and 4 to Tankards, and the victors won 26 games to 17.
PENNANT THREE
This round featured first against second, and third against fourth. Matt .Ljubic continued his outstanding form, whilst aggregate leader Darren Greaves is now in real danger of losing top spot on the aggregate ladder.
– Mallee Bearings 6 (Mick Bacon, Garry Hughes 2, Ian Kelly 1) d Fishers IGA 5 (Peter Kelly 3, Matt Johns 1)
Mallee Bearings and Fishers IGA were separated only by percentage at the conclusion of the previous round, as both sides had won only a modest three games for the season, and a win in this match was an opportunity to secure the double chance in the finals. Mallee Bearings were without both captain Bernadette Fitzpatrick and her mother Sabrina, and for Fishers Vaughan Waters and Harrison Cottrell were unable to play. Both sides therefore, were relying heavily on fill-ins. Ian Kelly and Gary Hughes replaced the Fitzpatrick duo, and Leonie Dunkley and Matt Johns wore Fishers IGA colours for the night. For only the third time this season Gary Hughes won two singles matches, thus contributing to Mallee Bearings close win. 
And regular number three for the Bearings side, Mick Bacon, having probably his best night for the season, picked up two wins also, a first for him for the season. He only lost to Fishers captain Peter Kelly, and Kelly needed four sets to register the win. The contest was evenly poised throughout the night, wins to Mallee Bearings being then matched by wins to Fishers. And so the tie was decided in the final rubber of the night, between the number threes, Mick Bacon outlasting Matt Johns in a five setter 11-2, 5-11, 12-10, 7-11, 11-7. Fishers’ captain Peter Kelly kept his side in the contest, winning all his singles matches and one doubles (with Matt Johns). However, only Johns could add to these rubbers when he defeated Ian Kelly in a five set contest. Mallee Bearings took the win, 6 rubbers to 5, and 22 games to Fishers 19.
– Max Miller Carpets 8 (Matt Ljubic, Emily Carmichael 3, Karly Leach 1) d Weightmans Packaging 3 (Darren Greaves, Lachlan Kelly 1)
Ladder leaders Weightmans Packaging were defeated for the first time, and in so doing winners Max Miller Carpets turned this game into a bit of a rout. Weightmans challenge to stay in the contest finished at the conclusion of the second round of singles. Even then, they trailed 4 rubbers to 3, and the remaining 4 rubbers all went to the Carpeters, making this a very impressive victory indeed. Both Matt Ljubic and Emily Carmichael won three singles, so the aggregate leader and captain of Weightmans, Darren Greaves was left with a solitary rubber victory over Karly Leach. 
Ljubic in particular was very impressive. His three singles wins were in the minimum of three sets; he conceded 21 points to Lachlan Kelly, 15 to Jeremy Corrin and 19 to Greaves. These three wins, coupled with Greaves one win, brings him to within one game of the top of the aggregate ladder – at 27 games he can overtake Greaves for the trophy, because he plays in the remaining two rounds, whilst Greaves is forced to sit out one with a bye. Number two Carmichael is in a solid third spot on the aggregate ladder with 22 games, 4 clear of Lachlan Kelly, and her three victories here indicate that she is “coming good” at the right end of the season. Her win over Kelly in the final round of the singles went to the full five sets; it was actually a dead rubber; but Carmichael was not going to let this opportunity of a win get away. She and Kelly slugged it out before Carmichael took the win 12-10, 12-14, 11-4, 9-11, 11-9. Karly Leach added to the ladder leaders misery by coming from behind in the final rubber to overcome Jeremy Corrin 13-11, 8-11, 4-11, 11-7, 11-5 to make it an 8 rubbers to 3 and 27 to 15 win. These two teams look like the ones which will meet in the Pennant Three Grand Final, and the winning team is beginning to look ominous …
PENNANT FOUR
The feature of the round was the return of past aggregate winner Brian Hosking to the table. Welcome back Brian, great to see you playing after a forced break, due to a shoulder injury. Also big news in pennant four Kerryn Greaves has withdrawn from her team for the remainder of the season. Kerryn is the wife of pennant three player Darren Greaves and they have announced that Kerryn is expecting a baby…….fantastic news and congratulations to you both, hopefully another little table tennis recruit in years to come!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
– Fishers IGA 6 (Ryan Hensgen, Helen Frania 2, Michael Hensgen 1) d Mallee Bearings 5 (Ben Hosking, Cole Keegan 2)
Michael Hensgen has replaced expectant mum Kerryn Greaves and comes into the Fishers line up to join his brother Ryan for the remainder of the season.
Third placed Fishers IGA started this match well against the top team winning the first two singles. In the first match Helen Frania continued her good season by defeating the talented Cole Keegan in a five set thriller 3-11 11-6 6 -11 11 -9 13-11. This was another of Helen’s great wins for the season after recovering from a 1-2 deficit and then hanging on in the fourth and fifth to record an important win against her in form son.
The Carpeters after dropping the first two matches were then stung into action winning the next four rubbers to lead 4-2 to take a sound lead. 
In this run of four wins Skipper Ben Hosking played a key role winning two singles and participating with Cole Keegan in the first doubles to defeat Ryan and Michael Hensgen 11-9 11-13 11-6 9-11 11-4.
Fishers then grabbed the next three games to lead 5-4 with two rubbers to play. Skipper Ryan Hensgen held off a brave attempt by Ben Hosking to win 12-10 11-9 11-9. Carpeters Cole Keegan then levelled the match when he defeated Michael Hensgen in straight sets after earlier defeating Ryan Hensgen in four sets which has cost Ryan the lead in the singles aggregate.
With the scores locked at five rubbers all Fishers Helen Frania calmly grabbed the points for her team when she accounted for Georgia Tilley 11-4 11-8 11-6. Fishers were victors 6-5 and now second to fourth in this pennant all sit on six wins with the double chance up for grabs over the final two rounds. Despite their loss Max Miller Carpets remain on top of the ladder two games clear of the other teams.
– Bishop Builders 7 (Sam Hensgen, Brian Hosking 3) d Mallee Bearings 4 (Claire Ljubic, Shirley Whitecross, Ellie Midgley 1)
Bishop Builders went into this match without their little dynamo Paul Fitzpatrick who was replaced by Brian Hosking. Hosking went on to play a key role against the all girl combination of Mallee Bearings. In the first game Shirley Whitecross got her team Mallee Bearings off to a good start when she defeated Geoff Keegan in four sets.
From this point Bishop Builders proved too strong winning five of the next six matches courtesy of skipper Sam Hensgen and fill in Brian Hosking who both went on to win three singles each. They combined in the first doubles also to grab a win. 
Team mate Geoff Keegan almost caused an upset against the talented Claire Ljubic. Keegan went down in a tough five setter. Ljubic’s team mate Ellie Midgley was able to take a two games to one break over Brian Hosking in their singles clash however Hosking was able to steady winning 11-7 6-11 9-11 11-5 11-5.
Later Sam Hensgen and Claire Ljubic fought out another five setter this time Hensgen hung on to win 11-4 12-10 9-11 9-11 11-6 and in doing so he leads the singles aggregate by one.
With a 7-4 victory Bishop Builders have given themselves a chance to grab the important second position on the ladder.
