– Mallee Bearings 6 (Arhuang (Wong) Lau 3, Russell Walder 1) d Regional Taxation Services 5 (Jackson Tung, Liam Wood 2, Lee Leeson 1)

Top team Regional Taxation Services lost their second match for the season at the hands of fifth placed Mallee Bearings. The Bearings trio of Arhuang Lau, Leon Brown and Russell Walder finished strongly winning three of the last four rubbers to snatch the four points and still give themselves an outside possibility of making the four. Skipper Lau was the standout performer in this match winning three singles and also taking part in both doubles victories.
The first doubles was huge in this result with Lau and Brown dropping the first two games against RTS pair Jackson Tung and Liam Wood. Lau and Brown then were able to take the third 15-13 in a great tussle, they then surged into top gear racing through the fourth and fifth to record an impressive comeback win 9-11 8-11 15-13 11-5 11-4.

With the match on the line the two best number three players in this pennant Bearings Russell Walder and RTS Lee Leeson took to the table to decide the outcome. This was the third round in succession that Leeson was in this position and both times she had been successful. Both players appeared nervous and many long rallies took place; Leeson was too steady in the first game however Walder then rallied and with his crafty angles he was able to gain an advantage in each game to go on and win in four sets in what had been a great tussle.
For Regional Taxation Services, Tung and fill in Liam Wood had won two singles each and Leeson one however it was the loss of both doubles which was crucial in the result.
– Weightmans Packaging 6 (Wayne Carmichael, Mark Dorman 2, Ed Hung 1) d Cookes Pools & Spas 5 (Kate Carmichael 3, Paul Kealley 1)

Despite trailing 4-5 late in their match third placed Weightmans Packaging recovered to defeat Cookes Pools & Spas 6-5 in a contest that climaxed with a thriller when Weightmans Ed Hung recovered from 1-5 down in the fifth to defeat Ash Morrison in a match which had their team mates on the edge of their seats. At one stage Morrison led two games to one however Hung levelled at two games all, Morrison looked to have control in the fifth before Hung mounted an excellent comeback to grab a match point, Morrison would not lay down and he then managed to get a match point of his own. Hung was then brave and in the last few points played two big looping backhand winners and this enabled him to take the match 5-11 11-8 7-11 11-9 13-11 a great battle from the two number three players.
Victory came for Weightmans Packaging despite Cookes Kate Carmichael winning three singles enabling her to maintain a one match lead in the singles aggregate from Shannon Bowen. Carmichael played an excellent match against her uncle Wayne Carmichael winning the first narrowly and then recovering from a 1-7 deficit in the second to again win this game by the barest of margins. Wayne took the third however Kate took control in the fourth to go on and win in four sets. This was only Wayne’s second defeat for the season.

In an even team effort for the “Double Centurion’s” both Wayne Carmichael and Mark Dorman won two singles each while the hero of the win Ed Hung won one important singles as well as teaming with Wayne Carmichael to win the vital second doubles.
As a result of this loss Cookes Pools & Spas have dropped from second to fourth.
– Tankard Dental 7 ( Shannon Bowen 3, Reece Kurrle, Jason Gifkins 1) d Choices Flooring Mildura 4 (Jamie Kealley, Gavin Carmichael 2)
In the final match Tankard Dental proved too strong for Choices Flooring Mildura winning 7-4 and now have jumped from fourth to second on the ladder. Skipper Shannon Bowen enjoyed a big night winning three singles as well as taking part in both doubles’ victories. Bowen’s teammates Reece Kurrle and Jason Gifkins picked up an important win each to offer support and this team looks dangerous as finals near.

For Choices Flooring Mildura Jamie Kealley won two singles his only blemish a four-set loss to Shannon Bowen. Fill in Gavin Carmichael also won two singles however the loss of both doubles was costly.

Mallee Meats 7 Michael Tan (2), Harry Gujral (3), Deegan Kerslake (1) defeated Weightmans Packaging 4 Rasin Bhuiyan (2), Andrew Jones (1), David Sergi (0).
Mallee Meats further solidified their position at the top of the Pennant 2 ladder with a victory over the struggling Weightmans Packaging, who with 2 wins and 6 losses, have been trying all season unsuccessfully to get themselves up out of fifth place on the ladder.
The fearsome Gujral took the first win of the night, downing Sergi 11-7, 11-0, 11-4, while Bhuiyan fired back by defeating Kerslake 11-4, 11-4, 11-8. Tan then wrapped up the first block of singles with another three-set win over Jones, 11-8, 11-2, 13-11, as he and Gujral took on Bhuiyan and Jones in the first doubles. The Weightmans pair took the first set 11-7, then Meats won the next two 11-6, 11-9. Weightmans then levelled it 2 sets apiece by snatching the fourth 11-9, but couldn’t finish off their opponents in the fifth, going down 4-11.

Up next, Bhuiyan and Gujral clashed, with the latter coming out on top after a tough scrap, 5-11, 11-8, 11-6, 4-11, 11-3. Captain Tan was then ready to back his teammate up with another win over Sergi, 11-7, 12-11, 11-4, putting them on the brink of victory at 5-1. But it was at this point that Weightmans launched a counterattack which knocked Meats off balance. It started with Jones as he defeated Kerslake in straight sets 11-6, 11-8, 15-13, and then Weightmans took out a hard-fought win in the night’s second doubles. They won the first set 11-9, Meats knocked them back in the second 13-11, then Weightmans got up again in the third 11-8. They then went down hard in the fourth 4-11 but recovered well to finally take the win in the fifth 11-9, bringing the score to 5-3.
Meats were now starting to worry as Bhuiyan defeated Tan in their match, 11-5, 11-8, 8-11, 11-6, putting the score at 5-4. Unfortunately for Weightmans, the next match-up would prove fatal for their chances at a comeback, as Jones proved to be no match for Gujral, losing in straight sets 0-11, 3-11, 9-11, wrapping up the night at 6-4. In the last rubber, Sergi had a real crack at trying to beat Kerslake, taking the youth to five sets but ultimately losing, 12-10, 5-11, 11-2, 6-11, 9-11.
Final score 7 rubbers to 4 and 24 games to 18.
Pinnacle Packers 6 Duy Truong (3), Peter Midgley (1), Steve Parker (0) defeated Choices Flooring Mildura 5 Therese Fitzpatrick (2), Josh Arnold (2), James Jarvis (1).
After dropping down to fourth place on the ladder last week, Pinnacle Packers took a shot at second-placed Choices Flooring with a tight 6-5 win. Could this be the start of their ascent of the Pennant 2 ladder?
The reliable Arnold took out the night’s first win, defeating Parker 13-11, 12-10, 11-7. The still undefeated aggregate leader Truong then took his first win for the night, downing Jarvis confidently, 11-7, 11-2, 11-4, as teammate Midgley struggled against Fitzpatrick, eventually losing in three 6-11, 8-11, 10-12. Next it was onto the first doubles wherein Packers won the first two sets 11-5, 12-10. Choices Flooring jumped in with a win in the third 11-8, but faltered in the fifth, losing 4-11, tying up the score 2-2.

Arnold then got the drop on Truong in the first set of their match, 11-3, but then Truong rolled up his sleeves and got to work, winning the next three in a row, 11-7, 11-5, 12-10. It was then Fitzpatrick’s turn to level the score, bringing it to 3 apiece after dispatching Parker, 11-7, 11-7, 14-12. Jarvis was then looking to get the fourth rubber for his team as he fought tooth and nail against a stalwart Midgley. He won the first set 11-5, Midgley clenched the second 11-8, Jarvis overcame him again in the third 11-7, but came undone in the fourth, losing a dismal 3-11, and then just missing out in the fifth 10-12. Packers inched further away from their opponents with another win in the second doubles, as Truong and Parker barely overcame the duo of Fitzpatrick and Jarvis, 11-6, 11-9, 9-11, 10-12, 11-8; the score now 5-3.
It was all on the line now for Choices Flooring as captain Fitzpatrick went up against Truong. Unfortunately, it seemed she had no more gas left in the tank as she went down quite easily in three sets 3-11, 5-11, 5-11, finally granting Packers the win at 6-3. Her teammates, however fought on with Arnold taking his second win by defeating Midgley, 11-8, 2-11, 11-2, 12-10, and Jarvis taking out Parker, 12-10, 11-4, 7-11, 11-7.
Final score 6 rubbers to 5 and 20 games to 21.

PENNANT THREE:
Both matches in Pennant three were one sided, a scoreline of 8-3, first team Cookes Pools & Spas proved too strong for second placed Exposed Signage/Apparel which was considered a surprise result, not so much that Cookes won but the margin probably wasn’t expected as on paper these two teams appear even. Cookes clicked this round, can they do the same when the finals come around? Cookes Koby Grace for the fourth time this season won three singles and is running second in the singles aggregate race.

– Cookes Pools & Spas 8 (Koby Grace 3, Peter Fitzpatrick, Yen Hwak 2) d Exposed Signage/Apparel 3 (Chris Cen 2)
Ladder leader Cookes Pools & Spas have recorded a very convincing 8 rubbers to 3 victory over second placed Exposed Signage/Apparel producing a strong all-round team performance to claim the premiership points and move 16 points clear of their opponents.
Led by their experienced skipper Peter Fitzpatrick, Cookes controlled much of the contest although at one stage the Exposed team did lead 3-2 early in proceedings.
Cooke number two Koby Grace was the standout player enjoying an impressive evening, collecting three singles wins and combining effectively with his teammates to keep the pressure on Exposed. Koby survived an outstanding five setter against Exposed number one Karly Leach in what proved to be a marathon with many long rallies. In a thrilling finish Koby won 8-11 12-10 6-11 11-7 13-11.
Captain Fitzpatrick was outstanding throughout the night, winning two singles and partnering Yen Hwak to win the second doubles in straight sets. His consistency and ability to win the crucial points gave Cookes a solid foundation for success.

Cookes number three Yen contributed two important singles victories and partnered Fitzpatrick in a successful doubles outing as Cookes built a commanding advantage. Yen has been consistent this season since being promoted from Pennant Four, he has now moved to third on the singles aggregate. The amount of training he puts in on a Monday night has contributed to his improvement.
For Exposed Signage/Apparel, Chris Cen battled hard and was the standout performer for his team, securing two singles wins for his team while he also partnered Karly Leach in a good win in the first doubles over Peter and Koby. Chris has been an excellent recruit to the STTA and now sits fourth on the singles aggregate despite missing two matches. Teammates Karly and Hayden Wilson pushed several matches deep however they were unable to add to the scoreboard.
By the end of the evening, Cookes had accumulated 25 games to 15 and wrapped up a comprehensive 8-3 result.
The victory keeps Cookes Pools & Spas in strong position four wins ahead of second as the season heads toward its final rounds, while Exposed Signage/Apparel will be looking to regroup and return to the winners’ list in their next outing.
Cookes are now hot favourites to take out the title however as we know finals can bring up different results at times.

– Mallee Meats 9 (Kym Sykes, Jenny Leach 3, Nathan Beard 2) d Weightmans Packaging 2 (Jakob Grzan 1)
Mallee – Kym Sykes, Nathan Beard and Jenny Leach. Weightman’s – Glenn Leeson (Fill in – Lewis Hussey), Jakob Grzan and Conner Burnett.
The first two to the Table were Jen and Lewis, with Jen a little nervous, knowing Lewis had filled in at Pennant 3 level a few weeks back and had been a strong fill-in recently. But either Lewis wasn’t focusing, or Jen was seeing the ball very well, as it was a super quick finish to the three sets, which landed Mallee their first Rubber.
Conner came out with some tricky shots against Kym and worked his way to a win in the second set, but Kym pulled the rabbit out of the hat and turned on his magic, to pencil in the next Rubber.
Nathan and Jakob hit their straps straight up with points moving back and fourth, with constant rallies right through the four sets. Mallee’s number two snuck in for the first set (14/12) and the following two were extremely close, until Jakob got his eye in and brought things to a halt in the last, giving Weightman’s the win they needed.
The first Doubles was a cracker, between Mallees pairing of Kym and Jenny against Jakob and Conner. It seemed to be Mallee with the advantage winning two of the first three sets, until the young guns threw in some slippery serves to pocket the Rubber.
With everything back to level, Lewis had to face Kym and he struggled to get a grip on his opponent’s serves, loosing the first pretty fast. But to Lewis’s credit, he pushed Kym in the second to take it out to 14 and sneak the set. Sets three and four fell to Kym in a solid finish for the win.

The tussle between Jen and Jakob was next to play out, with Jakob winning his last match and knowing how much his game had improved, Jen’s heart was pumping once again. The first two sets were rippers with lengthy rallies and both went out to 13, with Jen taking the first and Jakob the second. There were plenty of slick shots coming from both players, with a relieved Jen pinching the last two in an exciting four set battle.
Although the skirmish between Nathan and Conner only went to three, it was full on all the way, with 12/10 to Nathan in the opening two, before he found a way around Weightman’s number three.
Kym and Nathan put together a comprehensive three set win over Jakob and Lewis, in the last Doubles. The Weightman’s pair were fighting an up hill battle right from the start, with Mallee on fire. With this match being the sixth Rubber for Mallee.
It was thought Jakob may have pushed Kym a little more, but he has a full arsenal of shots and knows when to use them. Jakob didn’t give up, but the hurdle was too high this time. This notched up three Singles wins for Kym, a very nice effort again.
Nathan was a tad worried in his match against Lewis, as Weightman’s fill-in was connecting with his shots and his smashes were landing on, which also landed him the first set. The rallies were lifting and both weren’t giving an inch, but it would be Nathan who would come away with the Chocolates.
Conner snatched a set from Jen in the last match of the night, with some fierce forehands from both, along with Conners crazy spinning. The concentration and determination from Jen was totally real, with the realization she was playing for her third Singles win. Conner played very well, but a Mallee girl left very happy, to be able to keep her game together for the course of the night and contribute to a great win for her Team.

– Tankard Dental 7 (Darren Bottams 3, Tom Gilmour 2, Jake Hines 1) d Dunkley Scales 4 (Brice Lock 2, Maria Starikov 1)
Dunkley – Rodney Galvin (Fill in – Brice Lock), Maria Starikov and Alma McKay. Tankard – Tom Gilmour, Darren Bottams and Jake Hines.
Tankard’s number two, Darren, used his ever improving skills to put together another three confident Singles wins over the evening, which is bringing him closer to leveling up to his Captains score, in the aggregate battle.
Tankard got off to a brilliant start, winning all three matches in the first bracket of Singles. Alma did a great job in her confrontation with Jake, not quite enough to take a set, but there’s improvement there with every week. At the same time, Jake would have been happy to mark up a win.
Brice caused Darren some trouble in their four set combat, with the first set ending on 13, to Darren and the next on 16 to Brice. The pair produced some sensational shots and an entertaining match, which went to Tankard.

Once again the Maria V Tom clash went all the way, with Tom getting the better of Maria in the first, only to see Maria bounce back, with some fantastic defensive shots to collect the following two. They would be pretty even when it comes to wins, but on this occasion, Tom took the honors, after firing up in the last two sets.
The first Doubles also shaped up to be a five set wrestle, with the combination of Brice and Maria up against Tom and Darren. with the lead changing with each set and of course the inclusion of endless rallies. Dunkley’s pair wore them down and got their first Rubber.
Brice kept his focus into the next match as well. Jake shook things up a little taking the win in the first set, before Dunkley’s number one built a bit of confidence in the team, giving them another Rubber.
Tom played it a bit softer when he faced Alma and he did get a reasonable easy win, but stopped short at taking away the confidence from Dunkley’s number three.
Maria couldn’t keep up with Darrens crafty game, with his speed not allowing her the chance to put up her defense, causing a rapid finish to the match.
Tom and Jake were the winners in the contest with Maria and Alma, with Tankard taking hold of the match and bringing home their sixth Rubber, after four sets.
Brice put in a effort for Dunkley, bringing home two wins and being part of the winning Doubles and in a super four set win over Tankards Captain.
Jake made some ground in his encounter against Maria, although she did retain control through the three sets, to mark up her first win for the night and Dunkley’s fourth Rubber.
It was a bit of ping pong in Darren and Alma’s match, with Tankard’s number two calming his game to enable Alma to grow her game. This win would be Darrens third Singles win, which will be interesting to see where it leaves him in the aggregate.
WINNER : Tankard Dental 7 to Dunkley Scales 4.
