Fourth placed Tankard Dental have earned a berth in this weeks Sunraysia Table Tennis winter pennant grand final after an exciting 6-4 victory over first placed Regional Taxation Services. Going into the finals series Tankard Dental held a 2-1 lead in their head-to-head meetings during the season despite Regional Taxation Services sitting at the head of the ladder for the majority of the season. Whatever the outcome the result was expected to be close.

The first block of three singles went as expected however the third was a lengthy five setter and when Regional Taxation Services number two Rohan Reimers, through steady play, took a two games to one lead over Tankard skipper Shannon Bowen RTS supporters were looking for an upset however Bowen was able to regroup taking control in the fourth and then was too consistent in the fifth against a game Reimers. In a good comeback Bowen took the points 11-6 7-11 7-11 11-3 11-7, as a result Tankards took a two games to one lead going into the first doubles.
Tankard pair Shannon Bowen and Reece Kurrle started the doubles contest in fine fashion against Jackson Tung and Rohan Reimers in an attempt to increase their lead in their quest for a grand final berth. After dropping the first game Tung and Reimers fought back to take the second however the more fancied Tankard pair narrowly grabbed the third. Tung and Reimers would not go away and in a top-class game they narrowly took the fourth to level at two games all. The fifth was a real tussle early and in a strong finish the RTS pair of Tung and Reimers would score an excellent win 7-11 11-5 8-11 11-9 11-6 a great comeback, the scores now two rubbers all.
The next three singles went as anticipated with the top team Regional Taxation Services taking a four rubbers to three lead, the most entertaining being the four set slog between RTS skipper Tung up against opposing number two Kurrle who has claimed some big scalps of late with his power game. Tung started the contest well with a mix of excellent forehands and solid defence to take the first two games before Kurrle mounted a challenge and smashed his way through the third comfortably. Tung then grabbed the ascendancy in the fourth and would go on to a solid victory 11-6 11-8 3-11 11-7.
The second doubles was now crucial to both teams, victory to Regional Taxation Services would see them move to a 5-3 lead while a victory to Tankard Dental would level the contest at four rubbers all. The Tankard pair of Bowen and Jason Gifkins started solidly to grab the first game before their opponents Tung and Lee Leeson raced through the second. Bowen and Gifkins would narrowly take the third and the pressure was mounting when Tung and Leeson won a close fourth. The fifth was huge to both teams and after going point for point early Bowen and Gifkins proved too steady and prevailed 11-7 2-11 11-9 8-11 11-5 enabling Tankards to level at four rubbers all.
The two skippers Tung for Regional Taxation Services and Tankard’s Bowen then took to the table in a further crucial match for either team. Over the season Bowen had finished second in the singles aggregate while Tung had placed fifth. Despite many long rallies and excellent shots from both players Bowen was able to maintain a stranglehold and keep Tung at bay even though Tung was pressing hard, in the end Bowen took the points in straight sets 11-8 11-5 12-10 to take his team Tankard Dental to a 5-4 lead.
With his teams’ season slipping away RTS number two Rohan Reimers lined up against the hard-hitting Reece Kurrle and this clash would become the fourth five setter of the preliminary final. Reimers attempted to subdue Kurrle’s power game however Kurrle proved too steady in the first before Reimers struck back well in the second, Kurrle then comfortably took the third while Reimers returned the favour in the fourth to set up a fifth game. Both sets of teammates were now nervous however Kurrle remained calm in the fifth and grabbed the early ascendancy despite Reimers giving his all. In the end Kurrle had proved too steady winning 11-8 5-11 11-4 7-11 11-4.
This win by Kurrle took his team Tankard Dental to a 6-4 victory and a place in the grand final this week. For the victors Shannon Bowen led the way winning his three singles while Reece Kurrle had won two. The second doubles won in five sets by Bowen and Gifkins had been huge in the quest for victory.
Regional Taxation Services were best represented by skipper Tung who won two singles, they had enjoyed a successful season however would be disappointed to go out in straight sets.

Mallee Meats 6 Michael Tan (2), Harry Gujral (2), Deegan Kerslake (1) defeated Choices Flooring Mildura 0 Therese Fitzpatrick (0), Josh Arnold (0), Shiva Rottela (0).
Mallee Meats encountered little resistance from opponents Choices Flooring Mildura, eventually winning the night in a 6-0 clean sweep.
Rottela faced off against Gujral in the opening rubber, going down after four sets, 11-8, 13-15, 3-11, 5-11. Then in a match that should have gone to Choices Flooring, Kerslake defeated captain Fitzpatrick in three sets, 11-7, 11-8, 13-11, effectively demoralizing Choices Flooring and giving his team a massive confidence boost. Tan then took out Arnold in four sets 13-11, 12-10, 8-11, 11-7 and then teamed up with Gujral in the night’s only doubles match. Meats were fully in control in this match as well, downing their opponents in another three-setter, 11-5, 11-5, 12-10.
With the score now 4-0, Choices Flooring badly needed a win. Meats, however, continued to keep the pressure on with Gujral defeating the now winless Fitzpatrick in three, 11-4, 11-9, 11-3. 5-0 and it was Rottela versus Tan. Tan took the first set 11-4, Rottela the second 11-9, then it was a race to the finish in the last two sets, with Tan barely getting over the line first, 17-15, 12-10.
And so, it ended with Choices Flooring winless and out of the competition while their opponents Mallee Meats will continue on to the grand final to face off against Sammy’s Slammers.
Final score 6 rubbers to 0 and 18 games to 3.

This match was second Exposed Signage/Apparel up against Regional Taxation Services who finished fourth at the end of the season. Exposed Signage/Apparel went in to the match as favourites and probably even more so when the hard hitting RTS number two Brenden Johnson was a late withdrawal due to health reasons. He was replaced by the improving Lewis Hussey.

Exposed Signage/Apparel has booked its place in the 2026 winter grand final with a convincing 6 rubbers to 1 victory over Regional Taxation Services in Wednesday night’s Preliminary Final.
Both Chris Cen and Hayden Wilson won two singles each while teammate Karly Leach won one in their comfortable victory. Chris played well to defeat aggregate winner Andrew Kremor in four sets, he raced through the first two games however Andrew then lifted to take the third. They went point for point in the fourth as Andrew battled to take the match to a fifth however Chris proved too consistent winning 11-2 11-2 6-11 13-11.
The match prior to this was a ripper when Exposed number three Hayden played Regional Taxation Services number three Curtis Crabtree. These two would battle out an excellent five setter which could have gone either way, spectators witnessed many big forehands, the favoured shot by both players. In the end it was Hayden who was able to prevail in an exciting finish 11-7 9-11 14-12 7-11 12-10 well played by both players.
The first doubles was also a five-set tussle with Regional Taxation Services pair Andrew and Curtis breaking away to a two games to one lead against the talented combination of Karly and Chris, victory here for RTS would level the match at two rubbers all. The fourth and fifth would see Karly and Chris lift and after many long, long rallies they would recover to win 8-11 11-6 8-11 11-4 11-5, Andrew and Curtis had tried their best however things were going Exposed’s way.
When Exposed skipper Karly proved too steady for fill in Lewis winning 11-5 11-6 11-2 the match was over with Exposed proving too steady for their opposition. Apart from her one singles win Karly had teamed up with Chris to win the first doubles.
For Regional Taxation Services, Andrew Kremor battled hard to claim his side’s only rubber, while Curtis Crabtree pushed Hayden Wilson to five games in one of the closest matches of the night.
With a dominant team performance and contributions across the board, Exposed Signage/Apparel now heads into the grand final full of confidence after an impressive preliminary final display.

It was pleasing to see both Teams who made it to the Preliminary Final in Pennant four, didn’t need to call on any fill in’s, which was hopefully going to result in a close challenge.

For a good part of the season, Tankard Dental had acquired the top rung of the Ladder, with Weightman’s Packaging taking up third place after most of the rounds. There have been improvements made by all players during the 2026, which has been a positive for the coming seasons.

Players have been set in place on the Score sheets and all are ready to roll.
The opening match was between Darren and Jakob, which started with a burst of winning shots from Jakob, setting him up with a five shot lead, before Darren pressed the On button, to make up lost ground and steal the first set (11/7). The last two sets took on a different outlook, with a more even battle. Some amazing shots came from both, with Jakob’s serves fooling Darren on quite a few occasions. But it was Darren who turned up the heat when it was needed, marking up the first Rubber for the night (11/9, 11/8).
Tom was a the clear winner of the first set in his tussle with Conner (11/3), then the match got serious, with some tricky shots being produced by both. The final two sets both fell to Tom, but not before a super fight from Conner, who unfortunately lost both with a couple of unlucky serves (12/10, 12/10).
Weighman’s needed a Rubber desperately and their Captain was just the one to make that happen. Jake was always going to be up against the odds in this match, but he did a terrific job, with some very well played shots. The three sets concluded with Glenn giving his team a welcome Rubber (11/5,11/5,11/6).
The first Doubles was fantastic to watch, with the first set favoring Tankard and the second Weightman’s (11/4, 4/11). Glenn and Jakob didn’t play badly, but Tom and Darren got the better of them in the third (11/6). With Tankard holding the advantage, the fourth game was an absolute ripper, with great shots and silly misses pushing the score to a never ending (17/19) going Weightman’s way and moving the excitement to a five setter. The focus from Glenn and Jakob got them over the line and brought the Rubbers back to even.
Tankards number one and Jakob were in total concentration over their four sets Tom being put to the test, with a lot of edge of the Table winners coming from Jakob. The lead was tossed around in the last set, generating some excellent shots, with Weightman’s number two making it three in a row (11/6, 9/11, 11/8, 15/13).
The battle of Captain, against number two, could have gone either way, as Darren struggled to return Glenn’s serves in previous rounds. But on this occasion, it was the reverse, leaving Glenn under pressure, in a match which played out quickly in a win for Darren, to see the scores leveled again.
Jake bounded out of the blocks in his match with Conner, laying down some exceptional shots and pocketing the first set. He kept that pressure up through the next game and gathered eight points, just a little short of the win. It was Conner who turned the match around though, taking control of the last three sets to notch up a needy Rubber (6/11, 11/8, 11/5, 11/6).
Tom and Jake started off strong winning the first set of the last Doubles, after a game of rallies fell their way. Glenn and Conner worked well together to comfortably win the next two sets, with a late fight from Tankards looking like it may go to the fifth, but Weightman’s didn’t lay down and finished off in style (10/12, 11/5, 11/2, 11/7).
Things were looking dangerous for Tankard, needing to win all remaining Rubbers, to stay in the fight and this would be a perfect game, with the two Captains standing up for their teams.
Tom gave it his best, with two of the three sets pretty tight, before Glenn got the upper hand and pulled in the victory for Weightman’s (11/8, 11/6, 11/8).
The night was played with determination from both teams, in a friendly, fair tussle.
