PENNANT ONE:

Round three of the Sunraysia Table Tennis  summer table tennis pennant featured ladder leader Weightmans Packaging narrowly defeating Mallee Beatings 6-5. The Weightmans Packaging trio of Wayne Carmichael, Thanh Nguyen and Lee Leeson are the only undefeated team and are playing solid table tennis.

– Weightmans Packaging 6 (Wayne Carmichael 3, Thanh Nguyen 1) d Mallee Bearings 5 (Jackson Tung, Paul Kealley 2, Ashley Morrison 1)

Skipper Wayne Carmichael led the way winning his three singles as well as taking part in both doubles victories. Leading in to the first doubles Carmichael and Nguyen won their respective singles and when they combined  in the first doubles they accounted for Jackson Tung and Paul Kealley in an entertaining four set match which contained  some excellent table tennis.

The second doubles was a real highlight with Carmichael and Lee Leeson  teamed up against Bearings pair Tung and Ash Morrison. Tung and Morrison opened impressively to lead two games to one however could not push on to victory with Carmichael and Leeson finishing strongly to claim the final two games, the end result 9-11 11-4 4-11 11-8 11-8 potentially the match winner in the battle for the four points.
The doubles win gave Weightman’s a commanding 5-3 lead with both skippers  Weightman’s Carmichael and Bearing’s Jackson Tung taking to the table. The scores in each game were close and full of good rallies however it was Carmichael who was able to maintain a slight advantage in each game going on to win 11-7 11-9 12-10.

Fortunately the four points had been locked in as the Mallee Bearings pair of Paul Kealley and Ash Morrison scored good wins over their respective opponents Nguyen and Leeson. In particular the win by Kealley 11-9 in the fifth over Nguyen was an exciting contest.

– Regional Taxation Services 8 (Kate Carmichael 3, Andrew Cannard 2, Michael Tan 1) d Tankard Dental 3 Reece Kurrle 2, Jamie Kealley 1)

Regional Taxation Services have grabbed second position on the ladder with a percentage boosting 8-3 victory over Tankard Dental. The match did not start as expected when Regional Taxation Services number two Andrew Cannard played outstanding table tennis to defeat opposing number one Jamie Kealley in a match which Cannard forfeited many match point opportunities. Cannard raced through the first two games with outstanding table tennis. He then led 10-6 in the fourth only for Kealley to remain calm and level the match. As he had in the previous games Cannard took an early lead with some outstanding defence and attacking shots. Cannard would not relinquish the lead this time and went on to win a top class affair 11-7 11-4 11-13 11-13 11-7.
Cannard then combined with skipper Kate Carmichael to win the first doubles in a further five setter over Kealley and Reece Kurrle , the four points were being shaped. The next singles saw Tankard’s Kurrle defeat Andrew Cannard in four sets. From here Regional Taxation Services dominated winning the next five rubbers.
In an even team display the RTS trio of Kate Carmichael, Andrew Cannard and Michael Tan won three, two and one singles respectively. This was an exciting moment for Tan who defeated the experienced Ed Hung, his first win at this level after being promoted from pennant two.

Choices Flooring Mildura 6 (Rohan Reimers 3, Jason Gifkins 2) d – Cookes Pools & SpasCookes Pools & Spas 3 (Mark Dorman 2, Duy Truong 1)

The remaining match featured Choices Flooring Mildura up against Cookes Pools & Spas and both were without their number one player hence a shortened two versus two players match took place. Cookes grabbed the advantage early when Mark Dorman outlasted Jason Gifkins in four tight sets. Choices Rohan Reimers then changed the trend of the match by firstly defeating Duy Truong in straight sets, Reimers then combined with team mate Gifkins to defeat Dorman and Truong in four sets after dropping the first game 14-16.
Reimers then continued to shape the match when he took on Mark Dorman. Dorman proved too consistent in the first game however Reimers then struck back to take control and go on to win 7-11 11-7 11-1 11-6. Reimers team mate Jason Gifkins then played well to fend off Duy Truong in a further four setter.
With their 6-3 victory Choices Flooring Mildura now sit in third place on the ladder with two wins in three rounds.
Completion play is now in recess for the school holiday break.

PENNANT TWO:

Tankard Dental won their third straight game for the season and remain undefeated so far; Kym Sykes the stand-out player in the game against Sammy’s Slammers; Mallee Meats had a good win over Weightmans Packaging; and after two 6-5 defeats, Pinnacle Packers took a win, 6-5 of course!

– Tankard Dental 7 (Kym Sykes 3, Josh Arnold 2) d Sammy’s Slammers 4 (Peter Midgley 2, Ryan Hensgen, Yen Hwak 1)

Tankard Dental proved too strong for Sammy’s Slammers in this round 3 clash.

The damage was done early on, Tankard Dental taking a four rubbers to one lead after five games. The match which was the aberration was the win by Tankard Dental number two Kym Sykes over Peter Midgley (subbing for Sammy’s Slammers captain Daniel Jansen). Sykes did not let Midgley into the game, winning 11-7, 11-7, 11-9. Sykes continued his good form for the remainder of the night; he defeated Yen Hwak in four sets, and in the final round of singles he had a good tussle with Ryan Hensgen and prevailed 16-14, 11-5, 7-11, 11-7.

Tankard Dental dominated the two doubles rubbers; Sykes and captain Josh Arnold downed Midgley and Hensgen in four sets, and later Arnold and Juan Castro recorded a straight sets win against Hensgen and Hwak.

Tankard Dental captain Josh Arnold has been in good form this season, and with another two singles wins here, has now won eight of nine singles rubbers.

Sammy’s Slammers were a bit underdone in this match; Midgley, Hensgen and Hwak all defeated Tankard Dental number three Juan Castro and Midgley, determined to get a second singles win for the night, won a great match against Josh Arnold 7-11, 11-9, 21-19, 2-11, 11-9.

Final scores: Tankard Dental won 7 rubbers to 4 and 25 games to 17.

– Mallee Meats 7 (Quentin Clark, Deegan Kerslake 2, Jamie Stanley 1) d Weightmans Packaging 4 (Kevin Johns 3, Steve Parker 1)

Mallee Meats won five of the nine singles rubbers and both doubles in this win against Weightmans Packaging.
The Mallee Meats pair of Quentin Clark and Deegan Kerslake both defeated Steve Parker and Andrew Jones (subbing for Andrew Kremor); Clark and Kerslake took the first doubles 5-11, 13-11, 11-9, 6-11, 12-10
against Kevin Johns and Parker and Clark and Jamie Stanley won the second doubles in four sets against Johns and Jones. Jamie Stanley also proved too good for Jones in the night’s final rubber, winning in four.
The only bright light for Weightmans Packaging was their captain, Kevin Johns; Kevin won his three singles, but with both doubles going to Mallee Meats defeat was always on the way when only Steve Parker could win a singles rubber, this against James Stanley in the opening rubber.
Final scores: Mallee Meats won 7 rubbers to 4 and 25 games to 19.

– Pinnacle Packers 6 (Therese Fitzpatrick, James Jarvis 2, Koby Grace 1) d Dunkley Scales 5 (Rasin Bhuiyan 3, Chris Cen 1)

Pinnacle Packers took their first win for the season, and in so doing jumped from last on the ladder to third. Early days yet, but encouraging!
By winning his three singles rubbers Rasin Bhuiyan kept his team in the contest – in straight sets against newly promoted (from Pennant 3) Koby Grace; a closer, but still in straight sets against James Jarvis 16-14, 11-3, 11-9, and in four sets against his opposing captain Therese Fitzpatrick. Also Rasin and number three Sam Campbell won the second doubles 11-9, 11-8, 11-6 against Fitzpatrick and Grace to tie the match at four rubbers all at that point.
For Pinnacle Packers, Fitzpatrick and Jarvis both won two singles (both against Chris Cen and Sam Campbell), and Grace one (against Sam Campbell). Fitzpatrick’s wins were both in straight sets; Jarvis had to work a bit harder (in four sets against Campbell) and a come-from-behind five set win in the penultimate match against Chris Cen 6-11, 8-11, 11-8, 11-3, 11-8 to make it five rubbers all.
The pressure was on the number three’s then to win the night for their team, and neither captain could be disappointed, for it was a really good match, Campbell won the first set 16-14, Grace the second 11-7, then Campbell came back in the third 11-8, Grace responded 11-9 in the fourth, and the fifth also went to Grace 11-4.
Final scores: Pinnacle Packers won 6 rubbers to 5 and 21 games to 20.

PENNANT THREE:

Mallee Bearings have grabbed their first win of the Summer Pennant taking a 7–4 victory over Exposed Signage/Apparel in Round 3.

– Cookes Pools & Spas 9 (Sabrina Fitzpatrick 3, Curtis Crabtree, Joel Bottams 2) d Mallee Meats 2 (Anthony Fox 2)

Cookes Pools & Spas secured a commanding 9-2 victory over Mallee Meats in this round. Whilst the scoreline looked one sided there were three fivesetters that went the way of Cookes. 

The victory was anchored by strong singles displays from Sabrina Fitzpatrick with three while fill-in Curtis Crabtree and  first year player Joel Bottams both won two singles each. Curtis’s victories included a lengthy five set win over Tom Gilmour, three of the games decided by the barest margin, the final scoreline 8-11 13-11 11-13 12-10 11-7.

A further five setter proved to be a thriller when Sabrina Fitzpatrick took the points against  Cookes Anthony Fox after trailing one game to two. The determined Sabrina would night concede defeat and came back to win 6-11 11-6 7-11 11-8 12-10 a great contest. 

With her three singles victories Sabrina sits at the head of the singles aggregate as the only undefeated player in pennant three. Her team Cookes sit at the top of the ladder with two wins from two played. 

A bonus for Cookes has been the form of number three Joel Bottams who added 2 singles to the one he won last week. 

Mallee Meats skipper Anthony Fox was their standout player winning two singles and going oh so close to winning three. 

– Dunkley Scales 6 (Michael Hensgen, Rodney Galvin 2, Jeff Forsyth 1) d Regional Taxation Services 5 (Peter Fitzpatrick 3, Conner Burnett 1)

Dunkley Scales have come away with a hard-fought 6–5 victory over Regional Taxation Services. 

Dunkley’s were off to a flying start to take a 5-2 lead however It eventually proceeded to be a really competitive night of table tennis as RTS were able to fight back late but fell one rubber short. Victory came for Dunkley’s despite RTS skipper Peter Fitzpatrick winning 3 singles. 

Dunkley’s Michael Hensgen and Rodney Galvin put in strong performances winning two singles matches each and it was Rod who grabbed the vital sixth rubber when he defeated the persistent Maria Starikov in a tough four setter. Maria is affectionately known as “the brick wall” and it’s always a tough match against her. 
New recruit for Dunkley’s Jeff Forsyth playing his first match virtually proved to be the match winner as he defeated Maria in their singles contest. 

With just one rubber separating the two teams, it was a great example of how every game and every point can count on match night. With this win Dunkley’s Scales have taken second position trailing first by only percentage and are undefeated. 

– Mallee Bearings 7 (Hayden Wilson 3, Jakob Grzan 2, Costa Skiadis 1) d Exposed Signage/Apparel 4 (Nick Kiapekos 2, Simon Olavarria 1)

The Mallee Bearings team of Hayden Wilson (3 singles) Costa Skiadis (1) and Jakob Grzan (2)  put together a solid performance, combining some strong singles results with important doubles wins to finish the night with 24 games to 18.

Hayden Wilson was particularly impressive, picking up his three singles wins including a tough four setter against mum Leanne . Hayden in the second doubles paired up with Jakob Grzan against Leanne Wilson and new fill in Simon Olavarria  and this was an entertaining match going to five sets , the Exposed pair of Leanne and Simon took a two games to one lead however Hayden and Jakob were able to lift and go on to win 9-11 11-7 13-15 11-3 11-7 a great tussle and impressive by Leanne and Simon given it was the first time they had matched up in doubles. 

Exposed Signage/Apparel skipper Nick Kiapekos was their best player winning two singles while number three fill-in Simon battled hard winning one singles in his debut match. 

The final score saw Mallee Bearings claim the match 7 rubbers to 4, with a 24–18 game advantage.
