PENNANT ONE
The new Sunraysia Table Tennis pennant has commenced with round one matches played at a high standard. From the recently concluded winter pennant Duy Truong and Michael Tan have been promoted from pennant two. Truong won the singles aggregate going through the season undefeated while Tan played consistent table tennis to finish second and both earned their promotion.

– Weightmans Packaging 8 (Wayne Carmichael, Thanh Nguyen 3, Lee Leeson 1) d Cookes Pools & Spas 3 (Matt Ljubic, Mark Dorman 1)
Weightmans Packaging commenced the new season with a solid 8-3 victory over Cookes Pools & Spas in a match that contained five five set matches with four going the way of Weightmans. The doubles both went to five sets and were shared. Individually Weightmans number one Wayne Carmichael won three singles, his match against the returning Matt Ljubic was a highlight going to a fifth set. After a break from the game Ljubic will be a tremendous addition to the playing ranks and he showed against Carmichael it won’t take long to have his game on track.
Whilst Carmichael played well his teammate Thanh Nguyen commenced the season on fire also winning three singles including an entertaining five set win over opposing number two Mark Dorman 7-11 11-7 11-7 8-11 11-3.
To cap off a successful night for Nguyen he teamed up with Carmichael to win the first doubles in a further five setter against Ljubic and Dorman.
– Tankard Dental 6 (Reece Kurrle, Jamie Kealley 2) d Choices Flooring Mildura 5 (Shamir Salam 3, Rohan Reimers, Jason Gifkins 1)
The Tankard Dental trio of Jamie Kealley, Reece Kurrle and Ed Hung enjoyed a narrow 6-5 win over Choices Flooring Mildura whose stand in number one Shamir Salam played outstanding table tennis to win three singles. His five-set win over the youthful Jamie Kealley was an outstanding match with a mix of attack and solid defence. Kealley at one stage took a two games to one lead however Salam fought back well with some strong forehands to win 8-11 11-7 11-7 11-4 11-7.
The doubles were crucial in this result as they were both won by Tankard Dental and this was a good sign as this format has been seen as a deficiency in Jamie Kealley’s game. He played in both victories and performed very well.
Both Kealley and Reece Kurrle won two singles while teammate Ed Hung played well in his doubles in the close victory.
– Regional Taxation Services 6 (Kate Carmichael 3, Andrew Cannard 1) d Mallee Bearings 5 (Jackson Tung, Paul Kealley 2, Ashley Morrison 1)
In a further 6-5 result Regional Taxation Services proved too strong for Mallee Bearings and again it was the doubles which helped decide the result with RTS winning both. Kate Carmichael featured in both victories with the second going to five sets. Carmichael along with team mate Michael Tan outlasted Bearings pair Jackson Tung and Ashley Morrison 11-8 11-13 13-11 10-12 11-3 in what proved to be a crucial win.
Carmichael continued from her solid winter pennant form to win three singles and whilst her match against Jackson Tung only went to three sets , usually they play lengthy five setters, it did contain many fine long rallies.
In his return to table tennis Regional Taxation Services number two Andrew Cannard won an important singles whilst also teaming with Carmichael to win the first doubles to set up victory for their team.
For Mallee Bearings Tung and Paul Kealley both won two singles while Ashley Morrison won a lengthy five setter over Michael Tan 5-11 11-8 11-8 8-11 11-6. This is Tan’s first season in pennant one having been promoted from pennant two where he enjoyed a very successful winter pennant.

The number of players available in this Summer Pennant has meant that this pennant is basically a combination of players from Pennants Two and Three. The upside for the club is that there are quite a few players who are being exposed to the level of competition in Pennant Two. Players like Kym Sykes who played in Pennant Four in the Winter Competition; Koby Grace, Yen Hwak, Chris Cen, Sam Campbell and Andrew Kremor, all recent Pennant Three competitors; and two new names unknown to this scribe, Jamie Stanley and Juan Castro. We look forward to a good season for all of them.
MALLEE MEATS v. PINNACLE PACKERS
Mallee Meats took control of this game early, and saw off Pinnacle Packers seven rubbers to four.
Mallee Meats led 3-1 and then 5-2 before clinching the contest in the ninth rubber.
Mallee Meats captain Josh Arnold led from the front, winning his three singles rubbers and with Kym Sykes, the first doubles. Number three Juan Castro won two rubbers, and Sykes one.
For Pinnacle Packers, captain Quentin Clark won two singles, falling to his opposite number Arnold in straight sets, and number two Deegan Kerslake won one rubber.
Final scores: 7 rubbers to 4 and 26 games to 15.
– Sammy’s Slammers 6 (Daniel Jansen 2, Ryan Hensgen, Yen Hwak 1) d Tankard Dental 5 (Therese Fitzpatrick, Koby Grace 2, James Jarvis 1)
These two teams are loaded with heavy hitters, with the result that only two rubbers were decided in three sets.
Another telling factor is that no one player dominated, three players winning two rubbers, and three players winning one.
Yen Hwak (Sammy’s Slammers) and James Jarvis (Tankard Dental) set the tone in the very first rubber. Their first set was a marathon, Jarvis winning 21-19. Of course the contest went to five sets, Jarvis taking the last 14-12. Hwak did win one rubber, a five setter against Tankard Dental captain Therese Fitzpatrick, but then fell to his recent Pennant Three team-mate Koby Grace in four sets. That win by Jarvis over Hwak was his only win for the night too.
The Tankard Dental number one Fitzpatrick and number three Grace each won two singles rubbers, but the difference in the game result came to the doubles – Sammy’s Slammers won them both; Daniel Jansen and Ryan Hensgen defeating Fitzpatrick and Jarvis in four sets; and Jansen and Hwak winning a close five setter against Fitzpatrick and Grace 11-13, 11-6, 8-11, 11-9, 11-6.
These two teams look like the ones to beat in this competition.
Final scores: 6 rubbers to 5 and 22 games to 24.
– Dunkley Scales 6 (Rasin Bhuiyan 3, Sam Campbell 2) d Weightmans Packaging 5 (Kevin Johns 2, Andrew Kremor, Steve Parker 1)
The Dunkley Scales pair of captain Rasin Bhuiyan and number two Sam Campbell proved the difference between these two sides, Bhuiyan winning three singles rubbers, Campbell two, and together they defeated the returning Kevin Johns and recent Pennant Three Aggregate Winner Andrew Kremor in straight sets in the second doubles.
Bhuiyan won his matches in the minimum three sets, and Campbell, despite not having played this year, proved too good for Steve Parker, defeating him in three sets, and then getting the better of Kremor in a good four setter 18-16, 11-13, 15-13, 11-3.
Johns had a solid return, winning against Campbell in three sets, and a similar result against Deegan Kerslake, who was subbing for Chris Cen. That he was downed by Bhuiyan is not really surprising, Rasin being a number one in the recent Winter Competition.
Kremor and Parker won one rubber apiece, both defeating Kerslake.
Final scores: 6 rubbers to 5 and 20 games to 16.
