– Tankard Dental 6 (Reece Kurrle 3, Eddie Read, Ed Hung 1) d Regional Taxation Services 5 (Andrew Cannard, Paul Kealley 2)

In a nail biter Tankard Dental scored a 6-5 win over Regional Taxation Services to record their first win of the season. Skipper Reece Kurrle played a key role winning three singles which included a lengthy five set victory over opposing number one fill in Andrew Cannard. This win came at a crucial time for Kurrle’s team and after many long rallies the scoreline read in his favour 12-10 2-11 7-11 11-7 12-10.

A further important victory took place when Kurrle matched up with teammate Eddie Hung to win the second doubles against Cannard and Quentin Clark which eventuated into another long five set result, 5-11 11-6 11-13 11-9 14-12 what a tussle, an excellent win by Kurrle and Hung.

– Mallee Bearings 7 (Kate Carmichael 3, Tom Morrison, Lee Leeson 1) d Weightmans Packaging 4 (Jamie Kealley, Rohan Reimers 2)

Going into this round the winless Mallee Bearings were at the foot of the ladder and their opponents Weightmans Packaging were undefeated at the head of the ladder. Mallee Bearing’s number two Tom Morrison gave his team a positive start when he proved too good for Weightmans Marcus Cimino in four sets. In the first doubles Morrison combined with skipper Kate Carmichael to defeat Jamie Kealley and Rohan Reimers in a five set battle, Carmichael and Morrison won the first two games, lost the next two in a good comeback by Kealley and Reimers, however the Mallee Bearings pair of Carmichael and Morrison were able to hold the ascendancy in the fifth and went on to win 11-6 11-9 10-12 7-11 11-7.

Carmichael played a key role in the victory by her team, winning three singles and taking part in both doubles’ victories. Her singles against Jamie Kealley was a real highlight and an impressive display by both players. Carmichael appeared to be in control early winning the first game comfortably with many cross court back hand winners, Kealley fought hard in the second but just went down to trail 0-2 however he then took over control of the match winning the third and fourth narrowly by serving well and following up with many strong forehands. Carmichael grabbed the initiative in the fifth and raced to a 9-4 lead and again Kealley mounted a comeback to win five points in succession and level at nine points all. In an exciting climax two long rallies took place with some excellent shots played and, in the end, Carmichael was able to grab the final two points winning the match 11-4 13-11 9-11 8-11 11-9.

Apart from Carmichael wining three singles, teammates Tom Morrison and Lee Leeson won an important singles each to enable their team to win 7-4. For Weightmans Packaging both Jamie Kealley and Rohan Reimers continued their consistent season winning two singles each. Doubles proved to be the difference.

– Cookes Pools & Spas 6 (Kate Carmichael, 2 Russell Walder, Jason Gifkins 1) d Choices Flooring Mildura 5 (Jackson Tung 3, Liam Wood 2)

Choices Flooring Mildura pair Jackson Tung, three singles and Liam Wood two singles, both performed well this round however it was not enough for their team to grab victory over Cookes Pools & Spas who recorded their first win in another thriller.

With the scores locked at five rubbers all Choices number three Ashley Morrison took a two-nil lead over Jason Gifkins to decide the four points. This match eventuated into a thrilling five set contest as Gifkins worked his way back in to the match with some explosive forehands, his comeback even more impressive given he only managed to get two points in the second game. After winning the third and fourth games Gifkins was desperate in the fifth however Morrison had now regrouped, and they went point for point before Gifkins took the match 8-11 2-11 11-8 11-8 11-9.

This 6-5 win was the first for Cookes Pools & Spas this season.

In a busy night Kate Carmichael, who had replaced the absent Arhuang Lau in the Cooke’s team won two singles, as well as taking part in both doubles’ victories along with teammates Russell Walder and Jason Gifkins. Her only blemish was a straight sets defeat by Jackson Tung on his way to winning three singles.

The score was 4-4 when Bhuiyan confidently defeated Gujral in straight sets 11-9, 11-7, 11-8, leaving it now to his teammates to finish the job and win the night. And the man for the job was Tan who swiftly dispatched Therese Fitzpatrick in three sets, 11-5, 11-7, 11-6. Meats were then left to pick up the pieces, with Peter Fitzpatrick taking the last rubber against Parker 11-9, 13-11, 11-5.

Sergi and Jarvis kicked off the night with the latter proving too strong, winning 11-9, 11-3, 6-11, 11-9. Packers then extended their lead 3-1 by taking the first doubles match, winning in straight sets 11-7, 11-8, 11-8.

Truong then won his second singles match, this time besting Jarvis 11-8, 11-4, 11-7. Teammate Sergi could do little against Arnold, losing also in three 5-11, 5-11, 7-11. – Regional Taxation Services 6 (Karly Leach 3, Leo Parker, Cooper Kalms 1) d Mallee Meats 5 (Sabrina Fitzpatrick 2, Brenden Johnson, Hayden Wilson 1)

An amazing match Mallee Meats were searching for their first win of the season and what a start they made firstly leading 4-1 and then 5-2 against the also winless Regional Taxation Services.

Five setters were the trend in this clash with seven taking place, yes seven of the eleven matches went to five sets.

The first five setter took place in the first match of the night when Mallee Meats number three Hayden Wilson scored a 12-10 12-14 11-7 3-11 11-6 win over Leo Parker, then it was Hayden’s skipper Sabrina Fitzpatrick who recovered from a deficit to defeat Cooper Kalms in another five-set struggle, the scores in Sabrina’s favour 11-7 9-11 6-11 11-8 11-7.

Karly Leach was able to get Regional Taxation Services on the board when she defeated her winter premiership teammate Brenden Johnson in straight sets, Brenden then combined with Sabrina to win the first doubles over Karly and Leo 11-8 11-8 11-8. In a further five set victory Sabrina accounted for the determined Leo 11-4 8-11 11-3 5-11 11-8 in what was an outstanding battle of concentration.

With her team trailing 1-4 Karly then recorded her team’s second win but what a battle she had with opposing number three Hayden Wilson who fought out the match right to the end. After her team losing the first three five setters Karly was able to win this in five sets 11-8 9-11 11-5 9-11 11-6 a great match.

Mallee Meats then broke away to a 5-2 lead courtesy of Brenden Johnson accounting for Cooper Kalms in four sets.

The Regional Taxation Services trio now knew they could not slip up in any of the four remaining matches and amazingly they were able to turn the fight for the four points on its head by winning those four rubbers, This turnaround started with the second doubles when Karly and Cooper were off to a flyer winning the first two games before Brenden and Hayden took the third and fourth. The fifth saw Karly and Cooper take the ascendancy, and they went on to win 11-7 11-2 9-11 7-11 11-7. They now trailed 3-5.

For the fourth time Karly stepped up to the table knowing she needed to win, and she was able to defeat Sabrina in four sets, the deficit had improved to 4-5, could they stay alive? The answer was yes…just, when Leo took on Brenden and in the sixth five setter of the night Leo took the match by the barest of margins 11-6 9-11 11-9 7-11 12-10 a margin of two points in the final game, what a comeback the match was tied up at five rubbers all, Over the five sets Leo had won three more points than Brenden.

The four points were now up for grabs with Mallee Meats three Hayden taking on Regional Taxation Services number three Cooper Kalms. Hayden took the first game however Cooper showing great determination fought back to win the second and third, Hayden then stayed calm winning the fourth, team mates were on the edge of their seats in the long fifth as many lengthy rallies took place, either player could have taken the fifth however showing a calm demeanour Cooper scored a nail biting win 5-11 11-7 11-6 8-11 11-9 what a match!!

In a stunning comeback after being 2-5 down Regional Taxation Services had won 6-5 to score their first win of the season. Skipper Karly Leach stood up for the team winning three singles while combining with Cooper to win the second doubles knowing a loss would have meant the four points were gone. Both Karly’s teammates Leo and Cooper had won an important singles each.

Amazingly Regional Taxation Services won the last three five setters which took place in the last four matches, the final two by the barest margin of two points.

Mallee Meats will reflect on the four points that got away after starting so well.

Winner: Regional Taxation Services 6 defeated Mallee Meats 5

Games: 25 to 24

– Sammy’s Slammers 8 (Sam Campbell 3, Koby Grace, Leanne Wilson 2) d Exposed Signage/Apparel 3 (Curtis Crabtree 2)

Whilst the other match was a thriller this contest was dominated by the undefeated Sammy’s Slammers, although again there were many five set matches. Opponents Exposed Signage/Apparel were without number two player Nick Kiapekos who was replaced by Rodney Calvin, good to see Rod back having a hit again.

The first block of singles saw the Slammers score three wins, firstly it was Leanne Wilson scoring a four-set win over Rod Galvin in his first match since winning a premiership a couple of years back. Sammy’s skipper Sam Campbell then defeated Curtis Crabtree 11-7 11-7 11-7 followed by Koby Grace continuing his excellent season by defeating Steve Pongrac in an entertaining five set match. Going into this singles Koby had won five of his six matches and he was able to outlast Steve 8-11 11-6 11-2 9-11 11-5.

The Exposed team desperately needed to get on the score board and it was their pair of Steve and Rod who were able to defeat Sam and Koby in an excellent win 11-5 10-12 11-8 11-9 a real tight four setter but just what the Exposed trio odered.

The next block of three singles saw Sam defeat Rod in the first and then teammate Leanne recorded an impressive 11-5 11-8 12-10 victory over Steve to take the Slammers to a commanding 5-1 lead. The next match was a ripper with Curtis Crabtree looking to arrest his team’s deficit against the inform Koby. In an outstanding five setter with many long rallies Curtis was able to hang on in the long, long fifth to win 9-11 11-7 11-6 10-12 18-16 reducing the deficit to 2-5.

Curtis then took part in the second doubles with skipper Steve in an attempt to stay alive, their opponents were Sam and Leanne, and this resulted in another thrilling five set battle. After trailing one game to two it was girl power which won through and claimed the four points. The scoreline read 8-11 11-2 10-12 11-7 11-9 a great finish by Sam and Leanne.

To complete a solid win Sam then outlasted Steve in another five setter to win her third singles while Koby then defeated Rodney in straight sets. The final singles then featured Curtis and Leanne, these two have played many matches against each other this year with Curtis edging ahead in their head-to-head contests. In the fifth five setter of the match Curtis would outlast Leanne 11-7 8-11 11-7 12-14 11-8 another outstanding battle between these two.

Apart from Sam winning three singles teammates Koby and Leanne won two each while Leanne capped off a good night personally by winning the second doubles with Sam. For Exposed Signage/Apparel Curtis showed why he was promoted from pennant four by winning two singles.

Eddy and Yen both continued their consistent run, completing the night with three wins each in their singles to hold a steady lead in the aggregate.

– Weightmans Packaging 8 (Eddy Parker 3, Tom Gilmour 2, Liam Milton 1) d Tankard Dental 3 (Maria Starikov 2, Ildi Healy 1)

Weightman’s : Tom Gilmour, Eddy Parker and Liam Milton. Tankard : Maria Starikov, Ildi Healy and Andrew Jeffries.

Weightman’s took a commanding lead in the first bracket of Singles, winning all three, with two going to five games.

The two number three players took to the table first up and with Liam’s game developing with each week, he marked up the initial win for his team, against Andrew (11/5, 11/8, 11/6).

Maria did press Eddy in their battle, with Eddy getting away to a fast start, taking the first couple of games. Maria fought back to snare the next two, with a comfortable win in the last to give Eddy the Rubber, in a rally filled encounter.

Tom and Ildi also cranked out a five gamer with the match teetering back and fourth. Some games were easy wins, with the fourth going out to 12 and the final going to Tom (11/3, 8/11, 11/2, 10/12, 11/6).

Doubles number one also went to Weightman’s, when Tom and Eddy took on Maria and Ildi, it was a good clash, but Gilmour and Parker closed it out in three (13/11, 11/9, 11/7).

Eddy was way to much for Andrew to handle, with an easy win making this Rubber number five for Weightman’s in a difficult night for the Tankard team (11/2, 11/4, 11/4).

Ildi stemmed the bleeding with a win against Liam, giving some relief to Tankard (11/9, 11/4, 11/7).

Tom and Maria now had to fight it out, with Tankards Captain needing to play tough, to keep her team in with a chance. Tom snuck a win in the second game, but Maria held her nerve to take the Rubber (11/9, 6/11, 12/10, 11/6).

The second Doubles became the winning match for Weightman’s, with Tom and Liam firing up the action against Maria and Andrew. The first game was tight, but from there, Weightman’s took control to give them the Rubber they needed (12/10, 11/6, 11/5).

The next two Rubbers also went the way of Weightman’s, with Ildi going down to Eddy, after he notched up his third Singles win (11/6, 11/7, 12/10) and Tom marked up a confident win against Andrew (11/8, 11/5, 11/0).

Maria’s defence stopped Laim in his tracks, in a quick finish to the night (11/1, 11/5, 11/3).

WINNER : Weightman’s Packaging  8  Tankard Dental 3.

GAMES :  25  to 13.

– Dunkley Scales 6 (Glenn Leeson, Jakob Grzan 2, Jenny Leach 1) d Mallee Meats 5 (Yen Hwak 3, Nathan Beard 1)

Mallee : Yen Hwak, Nathan Beard and Conner Burnett. Dunkley : Glenn Leeson, Jen Leach and Jakob Grzan.

The overall encounter was pretty close through out the night, with neither team being dominant.

Nathan and Jen’s match went to four with Nathan collecting the win for Mallee. Jen put in a good effort to take the first game, but Nathan found a way to grab the next three (10/12, 11/7, 11/7, 11/8).

Yen had total control in his match against Jakob, producing some excellent back hand flick shots (11/7, 11/0, 11/2).

Glenn stepped up to the table against Conner, who put the pressure on in the second game to push the match to four sets, with Dunkley’s number one putting a halt to Conners tricky shots, to sneaking the Rubber (11/5, 9/11, 11/6, 11/3).

The first game in the Doubles, saw Yen and Nathan pressuring, Glenn and Jen to a 12 / 14 game, but the Rhyming Dunkley pair were determined to seize this match, to bring the scores back to equal, throwing together the winning shots (14/12, 11/3, 11/7).

These two may have rhymed as well, but being in opposing teams, Yen was the positive and Jen the negative, with Mallee’s Captain making short work of Dunkley’s number two, in their skirmish, with his slick moves a bit more than Jen could deal with (11/5, 11/5, 11/8).

The tables were turned in the next match, with Captain Glenn, zipping through his three games against Nathan, to once again draw things back to even (11/4, 11/8, 11/4).

The two number three players had a mighty battle, with Conner pulling in the first game, but not before a 14 / 12 score line. Each fought hard, but with the improvement in Jakob’s game, he was able to bring home the win (12/14, 11/9, 11/8, 11/5).

The last Doubles had plenty of Rallies, with Glenn and Jakob picking up the first game and giving Yen and Conner a good run for their money in the third, but it was Mallee who would pocket the Rubber, to put the scores at four each (7/11, 11/4, 13/11, 11/6).

Yen and Glenn wrestled it out for three games, before Yen notched up an important Rubber, to give Mallee the edge and to mark up his third Singles win (11/8, 11/9, 11/9).

Jen faced Conner, knowing this had to be a winning game, or Dunkley would have to hand over the win to Mallee.

It was looking good for Jen after winning the first two, but Conner played very nicely to make the third his. Focus, focus, was the thought in Jen’s head, which in the end handed Dunkley the much needed win, to, for the fourth time, leave everything tied again (11/6, 11/5, 9/11, 11/7).

Who would do the job for their team, Nathan or Jakob ? The match was very even and produced some great shots by both players, with Jakob finding that little extra to give Dunkley the win, after a see sawing night, with both teams giving their utmost (11/8, 11/8, 6/11, 11/6).
