Two of the three matches in round two of the Sunraysia Table Tennis senior pennant were decided by a 6-5 result while Choices Flooring Mildura were convincing against Regional Taxation Services, the final score 8-3.
Despite this being the second round there has been some very good table tennis with several five set matches taking place. Joel Thomas and Wayne Carmichael are the only players undefeated in singles matches.
– Choices Flooring Mildura 8 (Wayne Carmichael 3, Leon Brown 2, Ed Hung 1) d Regional Taxation Services 3 (Rohan Reimers 2, Andrew Cannard 1)
In an even team performance Choices Flooring Mildura proved too strong for Regional Taxation Services winning 8-3. The Choices trio of Wayne Carmichael, Leon Brown and Ed Hung won three, two and one singles respectively.
Going in to the second doubles RTS trailed 3-4 and were proving competitive however from here the Choices team took control winning the last four rubbers. This win has taken them to the top of the ladder albeit by percentage only.
RTS number two Rohan Reimers played solidly winning two singles, his 11-6 11-6 11-8 victory over opposing number two Leon Brown was impressive.
– Mallee Bearings 6 (Joel Thomas 3, Liam Wood, Daniel Jansen 1) d Cookes Pools & Spas 5 (Kate Carmichael 2, Casper McCarthy, Russell Walder 1)
Mallee Bearings were able to hold off a fast-finishing Cookes Pools & Spas winning 6-5 in a top class contest.
As expected, Joel Thomas won three singles however he did have his hands full in his final singles against opposing number one Kate Carmichael. Carmichael took a 2-1 lead however Thomas was able to steady winning 11-13 11-7 6-11 11-6 11-9 a top-class match. At one stage Mallee Bearings did lead 4-1 and then 5-2 and it was the first match of the night which in the end proved to be the difference with Bearings number three Danniel Jansen defeating Casper McCarthy in five sets, a vital singles in the context of the match.
– Weightmans Packaging 6 (Jackson Tung, Dylan Wood 2) d Tankard Dental 5 (Reece Kurrle 3, Thanh Nguyen, Paul Kealley 1)
Despite Tankard Dental number one Reece Kurrle winning three singles his team went down 5-6 against Weightmans Packaging. Kurrles four set victory over Jackson Tung was an entertaining affair with many powerful shots on display, Kurrle winning 11-8 5-11 11-8 11-9. Despite this loss Tung played a key role in his team grabbing the four points by winning his two other singles as well as participating in both doubles victories.
Team mate Dylan Wood returning this season after a break also played well to win two singles and partner Tung in the first doubles win. In the first match of the night Wood fought off Paul Kealley in a tough five setter 6-11 11-7 11-8 3-11 11-9.

All matches resulted in a six rubbers to five winning scoreline, and Weightmans Packaging and Choices Flooring Mildura being recording their second win of the season.
– Weightmans Packaging 6 (Quentin Clark 3, Brendan Alderton 2, Riley Clemence 1) d Mallee Bearings 5 (Jamie Kealley 2, Terry Martin 1)
Weightmans Packaging backed up their eight rubbers three to win from the first round with another win here.
Quentin Clark, Brendan Alderton and Riley Clemence dominated the singles rubbers winning three, two and one rubbers respectively. Mallee Bearings, however, kept themselves in the game with wins in both doubles rubbers.
Stand-out matches include the first doubles – Jamie Kealley and Terry Martin tearing Quentin Clark and Brendan Alderton to shreds with an 11-2, 11-2, 11-4 win, and the performance of Riley Clemence in his win over Therese Fitzpatrick in the deciding eleventh rubber.
After only twelve months of table tennis, and this being his debut in this grade (having missed the first round), Riley was too steady for the big hitting Therese, winning 11-6, 6-11, 11-8, 11-7.
Final scores: 6 rubbers to 5 and 20 games to 19.
– Choices Flooring Mildura 6 (Jeremy Corrin 3, Jason Gifkins 2) d Cookes Pools & Spas 5 (Marcus Cimino 2, Tom Morrison, Michael Hensgen 1)
In a match of extraordinary contrasts, Choices Flooring Mildura defeated Cookes Pools & Spas six rubbers to five. So what, you might say … we see plenty of six rubbers to five matches.
The difference here was that when the winners won a rubber it was (with one exception) by three sets to two. And when they lost, Choices Flooring Mildura lost in a hurry, in straight sets.
So whilst the rubbers score was a common sight, the games score was not. Having won six rubbers, Choices Flooring Mildura accrued just 18 games. Cookes Pools & Spas for their part, having won just five rubbers, amassed a total of 26 games (of a possible 27). So in similar fashion to the England cricket team who are so keen to tell the world, in this case Cookes Pools & Spas had the moral victory.
But I digress … the Choices Flooring Mildura pair of Jeremy Corrin and Jason Gifkins proved the difference between the two sides. Corrin won all his singles rubbers,
Gifkins won two, and together they chalked up another win, in the first doubles, to make up their six rubbers.
For Cookes Pools & Spas, Michael Hensgen is having quiet return to Pennant Two with a single win, Tom Morrison has not yet recaptured his scintillating form from 2023 and picked up one win, whilst the best performed was number three, reliable Marcus Cimino with two wins. Hensgen and Cimino proved their credentials with a three set over Corrin and Ryan Hensgen 12-10, 11-8, 11-6.
Final scores: 6 rubbers to 5 and 18 games to 26.
– Mallee Meats 6 (Ashley Morrison, Rasin Bhuiyan 2) d Pinnacle Packers 5 (John Fitzpatrick, Andrew Jones 2, Peter Midgley 1)
Despite winning five of the nine singles rubbers, Pinnacle Packers went down to Mallee Meats six rubbers to five.
There were five 5 set matches, and Pinnacle Packers won four of them. In an eerie kind of way, this match was similar to that of Choices Flooring Mildura and Cookes Pools & Spas, except that here, Mallee Meats won their matches in three sets, and almost without exception lost in five. So the scoreline (for games) was the exact opposite of the previous game!!
Highlights of this match – Pinnacle Packers number three John Fitzpatrick claimed the biggest scalp of the night, that of Mallee Meats captain Ashley Morrison in a great five match scrap. John got home 11-6, 8-11, 11-8, 8-11, 11-9, then ground out another five set win against opposite number David Sergi in the final rubber. Mallee Meats number two Rasin Bhuiyan also defeated the opposition captain, in this case Peter Midgley. This was the five set rubber which Mallee Meats won, Bhuiyan winning 11-9, 8-11, 4-11, 11-6, 12-10. Then after pairing with captain Morrison to take the first doubles, Bhuiyan made short work of Fitzpatrick in the second round on singles, winning in straight sets, 12-10, 11-6, 11-5.
Final scores: 6 rubbers to 5 and 26 games to 18.

Weightmans Packaging went to the top of the ladder after defeating Regional Taxation Services; and Sammy Slammers captain James Jarvis is the only player undefeated in singles so far for the season, this week leading his side to a win against Mallee Meats.
– Weightmans Packaging 6 (Ryan Peterson 3, Karly Leach 2) d Regional Taxation Services 5 (Peter Fitzpatrick 2, Sabrina Fitzpatrick, Sam Campbell 1)
Big hitting Ryan Peterson led his team to a six rubbers to five win against Regional Taxation Services.
Ryan’s tactic of taking a big swing at anything that remotely resembled a shot in the hitting zone paid big dividends when he accounted for the Regional Taxation Services trio of Peter Fitzpatrick (won in 4 sets), Sabrina Fitzpatrick (won in 4 sets) and Sam Campbell (won in 3 sets). And with Karly Leach he won the first doubles in four sets against the Fitzpatrick pairing.
That gave Weightmans Packaging four rubbers, Karly Leach contributing the other two, the second being a marathon five setter against old foe Sabrina Fitzpatrick, the girls playing themselves to a standstill, Karly winning the fifth set 12-10.
For Regional Taxation Services, Sam Campbell’s play caught the eye. She took a set from Karly Leach, next won the second doubles with captain Peter Fitzpatrick in three sets 11-9, 11-7, 16-14 over Peterson and Koby Grace, then won the final rubber 8-11, 11-8, 13-11, 11-8 against opposite number Grace.
Final scores: 6 rubbers to 5 and 19 games to 21.
– Sammy’s Slammers 8 (James Jarvis, Nhat Dat 3, Hayden Wilson 1) d Mallee Meats 3 (Andrew Kremor, Hamish Smyth 1)
After losing last week seven rubbers to four, Sammy Slammers came back with a vengeance this round to wipe the floor with Mallee Meats, recording an eight rubbers to three win.
Sammy’s Slammers captain James Jarvis again won his three singles rubbers, taking an early commanding lead on the aggregate table, now having six wins with his closest pursuers on four.
Sammy’s Slammers number two Nhat Dat, kept winless last round, played two five setters amongst his three wins this round.
And Hayden Wilson, playing at number three, fulfilled the promise he has shown thus far, in this game losing a very close five setter in the opening rubber to Hamish Smyth, then getting his first win for the season with a three set victory against opposite number Glenn Leeson. In between those two matches he made Mallee Meats captain Andrew Kremor work very hard for his 12-10, 12-10, 10-12, 11-7 win.
Mallee Meats are surely disappointed with this loss, however, this being their first game of the season, and against a quality side like Sammy’s Slammers, there is no need for panic yet. Andrew Kremor will warm to the competition, Hamish Smyth has heaps of potential, and Glenn Leeson whilst not a big hitter, is a “safe pair of hands”, as evidenced by his five win with Kremor in the second doubles.
Final scores: 8 rubbers to 3 and 29 games to 14.

PENNANT FOUR:
Round two in Pennant four was a strange one, as one of the Teams, in Tankard Dental, were a no show, which resulted in two Fill-in’s, up against the opposition team, of three. Thankfully the other three teams were all there, raring to go.
First up was the battle between Tankard Dental (the team normally comprises of Ashley Gillespie, Ildi Healy and Conner Burnett), but on Wednesday, Wendy Simpson, playing as their number one and Brenden Johnson, took on Dunkley Scales – Tom Gilmour, Deegan Kerslake and Selma Mayne. Because of the strength of the fill -in’s, Tankard Dental started the match of four down.

– Tankard Dental 7 (Wendy Simpson. Brendon Johnson 3) d Dunkley Scales 4 (Tom Gilmour, Deegan Kerslake, Selma Mayne 1)
Deegan’s game was a walk over, giving Tankard the 1st Rubber. Next up, Selma Mayne faced Wendy, which was going to be a hard task from the onset. Wendy took it in three (11/4, 11/1, 11/2). Brendan and Tom’s game was a closer contest, with the match being fought out in five sets. Tom took the first, but Brendan nudged his way in front, winning the next two. The following two sets were pretty even, but Brendan came out on top. (7/11, 11/8, 11/8, 5/11, 11/4).
Wendy and Brendan had a comfortable win in the Doubles to give Tankard a three to one lead. (11/5, 11/5, 11/7).
Dunkley’s Deegan put up a good contest, but Wendy marked up another win in three. (11/5, 11/9, 11/9).
Dunkley snared a win, with Tom getting a walk over, but Brendan proved too strong for Selma in the following match. (11/6, 11/8, 11/6).
The second Doubles wasn’t played, which meant a rubber to Dunkley.
Tom had the best chance of defeating Wendy, but the improvement in her game proved too solid and she gathered another rubber for Tankard, which put them at an unbeatable point. (13/11, 11/7, 11/6).
Brendan played out the last game, which also fell the way of Tankard, with Deegan playing a terrific game, forcing him to a five setter. (7/11, 11/9, 11/7, 7/11, 11/7).
With the final rubber being a walk over, it gave Dunkley a much needed point.

– Mallee Meats 7 (Maria Starikov 3, Jenny Leach 2, Jake Hines 1) d Weightmans Packaging 4 (Curtis Crabtree 2, Gary Leach 1)
Weightman’s, Curtis Crabtree, Gary Leach and Raj Gujral were all keen to mark up a Win, coming up against Mallee Meats, Maria Starikov, Jen Leach and Jake Hines. Both Raj and Jake, were playing their first competitive game and both were looking forward to the challenge.
Curtis and Maria’s match was pushed to four sets, but Maria held strong to come away with the win. (7/11, 11/7, 11/7, 15/13).
Jen and Gary Leach always make the most of their contest, but Gary was somewhat behind the eight ball in this battle, contending with a niggling back issue, which made Jen’s win a little easier (13/11, 11/2, 11/3). Raj and Jake had a great tussle, with their match going right to the edge. Jake picked up the first couple, then Raj fought back in the third and fourth, but it was Jake who marked up his first Win. (11/5, 11/8, 6/11, 8/11, 11/6).
The first Doubles was very tight, with the pairing of Curtis and Gary, up against Maria and Jen. Mallee Meats were under pressure, but hung in to snatch the Rubber. (8/11, 11/9, 8/11, 11/13, 11/7).
Gary came up against Maria in the first of the next set of Singles matches. Maria has a game, which is very hard to break through and this one was no different, with Gary struggling to close out on any of the sets. Maria marked up the fifth win in a row for Mallee, which was going to make the job quite hard for the Weightman’s team. (11/8, 11/9, 11/4). Curtis was always going to be a difficult job for Jake, but every game these new young Guy’s play, is invaluable experience for them. Curtis notched up the first win for his team (11/6, 11/5, 11/4). Raj and Jen had a really good match, with Raj showing he has quite a few tricks up his sleeve, which will go well for him over the season. Jen added the sixth win for Mallee, to make the night theirs.
Curtis and Raj put in a winner in the Doubles against Maria and Jake, in a three sets match. (11/5, 11/6, 11/9).
Gary put in a win and made it three for Weightmans when he came up against Jake (11/6, 11/4, 11/4). Raj and Maria’s match started out a beauty, with the first set going to 18/16, Maria’s way. The two following sets fell in favor of Maria (11/6, 11/6). Curtis came to life and had a comfortable win against Jen in the last Match (11/5, 11/9, 11/6).
