ROUND 5

PENNANT ONE:

The highlight of round five matches of Sunraysia Table Tennis pennant was the loss by top of the ladder Mallee Bearings against bottom team Max Miller Carpets. This result now means the ladder leader and bottom of the ladder are only separated by one win with half the season now played.

– Max Miller Carpets 6 (Arhuang Lau 3, Liam Wood, Ed Hung 1) d Mallee Bearings 5 (Shannon Bowen 3, Reece Kurrle 2)

Despite fill in Shannon Bowen continuing his excellent form with three singles wins and teammate Reece Kurrle winning two matches success came to the Carpeters 6-5.

The doubles were crucial with Carpeters skipper Arhuang Lau playing a major role in the teams win by participating in both doubles and winning two singles.

The first doubles in particular was crucial when Lau and Ed Hung outlasted strong pairing Bowen and Reece Kurrle 15-10 11-15 15-8.

With the match locked at five rubbers all Carpeters Ed Hung featured in the deciding game against first year player Quentin Clark. Clark was away early taking the first game however Hung sporting an arm injury was able to fight back and win 13-15 15-10-15-10 and bank the four points for his team.

– Cookes Pools & Spas 7 (Kate Carmichael 3, Jackson Murphy, Lee Leeson 1) d Tankard Dental 4 (Rohan Reimers 2, Thanh Nguyen, Paul Kealley 1)

With a hard fought 7-4 win over Tankard Dental, Cookes Pools & Spas have moved to first place on the ladder albeit by a narrow percentage. Kate Carmichael continued her good form winning three singles and taking part in both doubles victories while team mates Jackson Murphy and

Lee Leeson won one singles each.

For Tankard Dental, Rohan Reimers continued his consistent season by winning two matches.

– Regional Taxation Services 8 (Jackson Tung, Leon Brown 3) d Weightmans Packaging 3 (Gavin Carmichael, Russell Walder, Andrew Cannard 1)

Regional Taxation Services were the big winners this round disposing of Weightmans Packaging 8-3. Both Jackson Tung and Leon Brown for the first time this season won three singles each in a commanding display.

Tung completed a successful night by playing in both three set doubles victories. RTS have now moved to second place on the ladder in what is proving to be a very close competition.       

PENNANT TWO:

The two top sides met this round, and ladder leaders Weightmans Packaging were toppled by Max Miller Carpets; whilst in the other two matches, third placed Pinnacle Packers and fourth placed Mallee Meats maintained their spots on the ladder with wins over Cookes Pools & Spas and Mallee Bearings respectively.

– Max Miller Carpets 8 (Jamie Kealley, Jordan Cole, Peter Fitzpatrick 2) d Weightmans Packaging 3 (Jeremy Corrin 3)

Max Miller Carpets scored a big win against the previously unbeaten Weightmans Packaging side in this round.

Whilst none of the Max Miller Carpets trio of Jamie Kealley, Jordan Cole and Peter Fitzpatrick could beat Weightmans Packaging captain Jeremy Corrin in singles play, the team did win everything else. The result was a resounding eight rubbers to three win to Max Miller Carpets who now replace Weightmans Packaging at the top of the ladder.

The Max Miller Carpets side played disciplined table tennis, and along with the six singles rubbers they won, they took both the doubles encounters.

Max Millers’ good fortune was aided and abetted by the Weightmans Packaging side seemingly to have an “off” night. Number two Shaun Gifford in the first four rounds scored ten wins from twelve singles rubbers played, yet he failed to win any in this encounter. His first match-up was with Jamie Kealley, and Kealley won comfortably 15-8, 15-13. In the second round of singles, Jordan Cole faced him at the other end of the table, and Shaun took less points than he did against Jamie, Cole winning that match 15-8, 15-10. And in the final round of singles, with the match already decided, Shaun fell to the Max Miller Carpets number three Peter Fitzpatrick in three sets.

Similarly Weightmans Packaging number three Therese Fitzpatrick had a night where she just failed to hit her spots. Therese lost all her matches in two sets.

Kealley and Cole proved the better combination when they downed Corrin and Gifford in the first doubles 15-10, 15-9, but the second doubles between Kealley and Peter Fitzpatrick against Corrin and Therese Fitzpatrick was much much closer. The Max Miller Carpets pair won points at just the right time to take the win 15-13, 17-15.

Final scores: 8 rubbers to 3 and 17 games to 7.

– Pinnacle Packers 7 (Daniel Jansen 3, David Sergi 2, Rasin Bhuiyan 1) d Cookes Pools & Spas 4 (Kevin Johns 2)

Pinnacle Packers followed up their clean sweep of rubbers in the last round with a solid seven rubbers to four win against Cookes Pools & Spas to keep third spot on the ladder.

The win was attained after seven rubbers, but Cookes Pools & Spas made the loss look a little “respectable” by taking three of the four remaining rubbers.

Daniel Jansen did most of the damage for Pinnacle Packers, winning his three singles rubbers in straight sets. David Sergi, subbing for Levi Williams picked up two important wins (against Luca Capizzoto and Marita Grace), and Rasin Bhuiyan, although unable to replicate his great form from last week when he won three rubbers, did pick up one win.

Jansen and Bhuiyan won the first doubles 16-14, 15-13 against Johns and Capizzoto who were probably a little unlucky not to take that match to the third set.

For Cookes Pools & Spas, captain Kevin Johns won two singles rubbers and Marita Grace one. Grace was rewarded for her doggedness in this match when she downed Bhuiyan in three sets in the final rubber of the night 12-15, 15-10, 15-5. She and Johns were successful in the second doubles against Jansen and Sergi, taking that 11-15, 15-11, 15-8.

Final scores: 7 rubbers to 4 and 17 games to 9.

– Mallee Meats 7 (Tom Morrison 3, Terry Martin 2, Andrew Kremor 1) d Mallee Bearings 4 (Josh Arnold 2, John Fitzpatrick 1)

With Cookes Pools & Spas losing their match to Pinnacle Packers, Mallee Meats consolidated their fourth spot on the ladder with victory over bottom side, Mallee Bearings. Mallee Meats now have a two game break over fifth placed Cookes Pools & Spas.

Mallee Bearings are yet to taste victory this season, and they again fell short in this encounter. The side fought valiantly for the win, and with the scores locked at four rubbers all, and three to play, Mallee Meats put the hammer down and took the last three rubbers to snuff out any hope their opponents may have had.

Mallee Meats number two Tom Morrison was the main contributor to this win. Morrison continues to improve and with three wins for the second time this season, is proving a hard nut to crack. He confidently dealt with James Jarvis 15-6, 15-12, then John Fitzpatrick 15-10, 15-12 and finally against Josh Arnold an easier 15-2, 15-13 victory. With captain Terry

Martin, Morrison spent little time dealing with Fitzpatrick and Arnold in the first doubles, winning 15-8, 15-3.

Martin won two singles, against Jarvis (15-9, 15-11) and Fitzpatrick (16-14, 15-6). Andrew Kremor, playing at number three and subbing for Leon Bailey also took a win, against Jarvis 20-18, 15-5.

For Mallee Bearings, Josh Arnold was the best performed player, taking two singles wins. He kept his side’s hopes alive with a fighting three set win against Martin in the first round of singles, 15-11, 10-15, 15-5, and in the second round of singles defeated the returning Kremor in two sets.

With victory in the doubles rubber which followed, in which Fitzpatrick and Jarvis fighting for their lives and coming from a set down, defeated Martin and Kremor 14-16, 15-10, 15-13. That brought the score to four rubbers all, but then Martin defeated Fitzpatrick, Morrison downed Arnold

and Kremor accounted for Jarvis.

Final scores: 7 rubbers to 4 and 16 games to 8.

PENNANT THREE:

At the half way point in the season, the five teams in this grade are all locked on two wins and two losses (with one bye). This is due in part to the re-jig of teams after round two, and bodes well for the remainder of the season.

– Sammy’s Slammers 6 (Ryan Peterson 3, Nick Kiapekos 1) d Exposed Signage/Apparel 5 (Sabrina Fitzpatrick, Chelsey Avers 2, Steve Parker 1)

Sammy’s Slammers came into this round fourth on the ladder, and even with a narrow six rubbers to five win against ladder leaders Exposed Signage & Apparel, jumped to second on the table.

Sammy’s Slammers will be thanking their number two (and new emerging talent) Ryan Peterson for the result in this match. First time player and school student, Peterson has taken to this game like a duck to water, and with three singles wins and participating in both doubles victories, nobody would contradict that statement.

Peterson has a free-flowing easy style of game, and coupled with his enthusiasm and youth, he took command of this match. His first round win against Sabrina Fitzpatrick is a good example. Down 11-15 after the first set, Ryan regrouped to take the following two sets 15-7, 15-7. He followed up that win in the very next game, the first doubles, with his captain Nick Kiapekos. After taking the first set easily 15-5, Kiapekos and Peterson had to work to defeat Fitzpatrick and Steve Parker as the Exposed Signage & Apparel pair took the second set 15-12, However, Peterson and Kiapekos prevailed in the third 15-13. Peterson’s win against fill-in Chelsey Avers in two set was an authoritative 15-8, 15-9, and he kept his head down to down the persistent Steve Parker in the penultimate rubber 16-14, 9-15, 15-13.

Captain Nick Kiapekos subbed himself out of the second doubles to allow the youngster to play with Deegan Kerslake, and the two youngsters did not disappoint, getting the better of Sabrina Fitzpatrick and Chelsey Avers in (another) three set contest 7-15, 15-8, 15-13.

Peterson was involved in five of the six wins for this side, Nick Kiapekos making up that sixth rubber, a good three set win against Steve Parker 15-10, 12-15, 15-13.

Losing side Exposed Signage & Apparel won five of the nine singles rubbers (two each to Sabrina Fitzpatrick and Chelsey Avers, and one to Steve Parker), and with both doubles going to three sets would probably acknowledge that their defeat was due to the “Peterson Factor”. There is

already talk among the pennant three folk that Peterson is destined for pennant two in the near future. Time will tell.

Final scores: 6 rubbers to 5 and 15 games each.

– Mallee Meats 6 (Riley Clemence, Koby Grace 2, Dave Tanner 1) d Regional Taxation Services 5 (Nhat Dat 3, Brian White 1)

Just like Sammy’s Slammers in the other game, Mallee Meats jumped two spots on the ladder with this win against Regional Taxation Services.

In a very fiercely contest match in which nine of the eleven rubbers went to the maximum three sets, Mallee Meats defeated Regional Taxation Services six rubbers to five, with the losers winning more games, sixteen to fifteen.

Mallee Meats number three Koby Grace had his best night (individually) of the season, when he defeated his opposite number Brian White 13-15, 15-7, 15-13 and then in an upset took out Regional Taxation Services captain Leo Parker 14-16, 15-11, 15-6. In both matches, Koby lost the first set, and bounced back. Great performance.

Riley Clemence duplicated the wins of his number three, he also defeating Leo Parker (15-10, 13-15, 15-9) and Brian White (8-15, 15-8, 15-10).

Dave Tanner picked up the final singles rubber for his side, keeping Leo Parker winless for the first time this season when he won 15-9, 5-15, 15-11.

Number two Nhat Dat was the outstanding player for Regional Taxation Services (and probably the outstanding player in the match). Nhat won his three singles rubbers; a comfortable 15-9, 15-12 against Dave Tanner; a much closer 15-12, 16-14 win over the much improved Koby Grace; and then after losing the first set 5-15 to Riley Clemence, hit back 15-8, 15-8 to make in three wins.

Brian White was rewarded for his efforts with a win in his final match. Earlier in the night he had lost to both Koby Grace and Riley Clemence in three sets, but those losses did not deter him, and he made sure the loss to his team was as small as possible when he downed Dave Tanner 16-14, 8-15, 15-13 in the final rubber.

Final scores: 6 rubbers to 5 and 15 games to 16

PENNANT FOUR:

This Round was a battle of the two Teams on top of the ladder and the two towards the lower part of the ladder, to put it nicely.

– Dunkley Scales 6 (Katrina Clifford, Brandt Dolic 2) d Tankard Dental 5 (Glenn Leeson 3, Derek Hung, Lindy Cannard 1)

Firstly it must be said, Tankard Dental were missing their number two and three players, Curtis and Nathan, but they had two very capable fill in’s, namely Glenn Leeson, who is now playing is Pennant 3 and Lindy Cannard.

It was a very close battle through out the night, with the wins zig zagging from team to team as each match was completed.

The first bracket of Singles saw Glenn take the win over  Dunkley’s number one, Kat Clifford (15/10, 15/13). Then it sea sawed back, with Brant Dolic collecting his win, in two from Lindy (15/6, 15/7). From there Derek Hung had a good win against Oliver Bremner (15/11, 15/8).

The pairing of Kat and Brant were far too strong for Derek and Glenn in the Doubles, marking up a win for Dunkley (15/5, 15/12).

Glenn pushed Brant to three sets in a close tussle, winning in (15/8, 13/15, 15/12). Kat got her Mo Jo back in her second Singles and snatched the match with Derek in two sets (15/10, 18/16). Oliver put in a great effort in his attempt to beat Lindy, but she forced him to a three sets win, which moved the Tankard team to a 4 to 3 lead (10/15, 15/11, 15/10).

The second Doubles match also fell the way of Dunkley Scales, with Kat and Oliver, just a bit too solid for Derek and Lindy (15/7, 15/11), things now sitting evenly balanced.

The last lot of Singles saw the scales tip in Dunkley’s favor, with Brant continuing his form, knocking off Derek (15/17, 17/15). Glenn fought back to balance the scales, with a convincing win against Oliver (15/9, 15/3). Dunkley’s Captain, Kat, put the win to bed, after defeating Lindy (15/8, 15/12).

Winners – Dunkley Scales 6 to Tankard Dental 5 (games 14 to 10).

– Weightmans Packaging 7 (Tom Gilmour, Gary Leach 2, Cetty Bonaccorso 1) d Mallee Meats 4 (Maria Starikov 3, Jenny Leach 1)

With Weightmans not having won a Match so far, they were very determined to keep focused with this Round to get themselves back into the running.

First up was the match against Mallee’s Maria Starikov and Weightmans Tom Gilmour. With both knowing their games inside out, it brought a bit of action to the Table. Tom took out the first set, but Maria, with her Brick Wall game came back to win the next two. (13/15, 15/11, 15/6).

Gary Leach lifted his game and his confidence to another level and picked up the Win over Jenny Leach (15/8, 15/12). Cetty Bonaccorso had won the first set against Selma Mayne very early, but Selma gave it a really good shot in the second, with the Win landing Cetty’s way (15/3, 19/17).

Tom and Gary won the Doubles in resounding fashion, over Maria and Jen (15/4, 15/11). /Although pushed, Tom managed to take a Win for his team, this time over Jen (15/11, 17/15), giving Weightmans a 4 to 1 lead. Maria reeled it back a tad against Cetty (15/12, 15/5), but not for long, with Gary marking up his second Win for the night, closing down Selma’s game (15/6, 15/11).

The Second Doubles pairing of Tom and Cetty also fell their way, picking up this win over Maria and Selma in two sets (15/13, 15/13).

At this stage, with three more Singles games to play, Weightmans already had a strangle hold on the night, with a collection of six Wins, to a mere 2 from Mallee Meats.

Cetty put the pressure on Jen in their first set, but Jen got back to business in the second, making sure of the Win (15/13, 15/9). Tom took on Mallee’s number three, Selma, snaring his second Win for the night (15/7, 15/5). Gary tried his darndest to produce three wins for his team, but Maria once again pulled out the Iron Wall, to soften the blow for Mallee Meats (11/15, 15/3, 15/6).

Winner – Weightmans Packaging 7 to Mallee Meats 4 (games 16 to 8).

This Round may have changed the line up on the Top of the Ladder, but it also may have allowed the field at the other end to take a little step forward and bring a bit of excitement to Pennant 4.
