The table tennis competition at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham wrapped up on Monday night with a spirited silver medal performance from Victorian legend Jian Fang Lay and her partner Min Hyung Jee in the women’s doubles final.

Eight Victorian players took part in the singles and doubles events in Birmingham resulting in four medals for Australia and a couple of fourth place finishes in what turned out to be Table Tennis Australia’s most successful Commonwealth Games ever.

Finn Luu ended his singles campaign ranked 17th; he won his two group matches in impressive fashion 4-0 before falling to India’s Sharath Kamal Achanta who eventually went on to win the gold.

Finn shined in the doubles finishing 5th in the mixed doubles alongside New South Wales’ Yangzi Liu and narrowly missed out on a medal in the men’s doubles with fellow Victorian debutant Nic Lum. The Pair played fantastically throughout the event, going down 2-3 in a close semi-final before finishing the bronze medal match 1-3.

Qian Yang showed us all why she is the reigning Australian Para Player of the Year as she defeated her Aussie teammate and fellow Team Vic player Li Na Lei in the final of the women’s singles C6-10 to claim gold.

Qian cruised through her competitors on route to the final winning four matches and only dropping one game along the way before taking gold with a 3-1 victory over Lei.

Paralympic star Danni Di Toro may not have come away with a medal in the women’s singles C3-5 finishing with two losses and a win in her group matches. But her emphatic 3-0 victory over Fiji’s Akanisi Latu was terrific, with 18 points won on serve and a strong 11-2, 11-6, 11-4 win turning her Commonwealth Games debut into a success.

Dillon Chambers smashed his pair of group stage matches in the singles competition winning both battles 4-0. He moved on to the round of 32 against Singapore’s Zhe Yu Clarence Chew where he pushed the doubles bronze medallist to seven sets, almost pulling off an unbelievable comeback from 1-3 down early in the match.

In the doubles, Dillon paired with Chris Yan winning in the round of 32 3-0 before going down 1-3 in the round of 16.

Ma Lin dominated throughout the men’s singles C8-10 event as he went undefeated across four matches before reaching the gold medal final against Wales’ Joshua Stacey.

In a ridiculous first game that saw Stacey take the early lead the pair took the game to 23-25 to set up their thriller final. Ma Lin went on to take the next two games 11-5, 11-9 but eventually lost the final two games to come away with an immensely impressive silver medal.

Also adding silver to her bag for the flight home was Li Na Lei, she didn’t lose a single game until she reached the final, defeating each of her four opponents 3-0 before coming up against teammate Qian Yang and losing 1-3 to come home with second.

Nicholas Lum came agonisingly close to a pair of bronze medals on his Commonwealth Games debut. In the men’s doubles he paired with Finn Luu where they played fantastically throughout the event, going down 2-3 in a close semi-final before finishing the bronze medal match 1-3.

He also finished fourth in the mixed doubles with Min Hyung Jee, the duo almost earned themselves a spot in the gold medal match going down in the semi-final 2-3 against eventual gold medallists Sharath Kamal Achanta and Sreeja Akula from India, before losing the fight for bronze against Singapore’s Zhe Yu Chew and Jian Zeng.

Jian Fang Lay closed out the table tennis competition in Birmingham with a silver medal performance alongside her partner Min Hyung Jee in the women’s doubles final. The pair defeated the tough Singapore duo of Xin Ru Wong and Jingyi Zhou in the semi-final before coming up against their teammates and event favourites Tianwei Feng and Jian Zeng in the gold medal match.

Jian also made it through to the quarter finals of the singles competition, but it was Tianwei Feng who spoiled her party twice this Games, beating Jian 4-0 before going on to win the gold herself.
