PENNANT ONE

It has taken six rounds to break through for their first victory and amazingly Mallee Bearings are still a mathematical chance to play finals table tennis in pennant one with four rounds of the Sunraysia Table Tennis summer pennant remaining.

MALLEE BEARINGS VS PINNACLE PACKERS

After a few close losses early in the season Mallee Bearings proved too good this round for Pinnacle Packers winning 7-4 although it should be noted that the Packers were hampered to a certain extent with an injury to number one player Neil Rodrigues who played bravely to win two singles. This was a really even team effort for the victors with Wayne Carmichael, Ed Hung and fill in Daniel Jansen winning three, two and one singles respectively. Hung for Mallee Bearings in particular had a good night winning two singles against tough opposition of John Gray and Kevin Johns. Success came in four sets against the consistent Gray while Hung took the match against Johns 9-11 12-10 6-11 13-11 11-4 in their now customary five set slog.
Hung also partnered Wayne Carmichael in the first doubles to defeat Johns and Rodrigues in straight sets. The Packers trailed early 1-4 and fought hard to level the match at four rubbers all courtesy of Rodrigues and John Gray combining in the second doubles to defeat Wayne Carmichael and Daniel Jansen 8-11 11-6 11-8 6-11 11-9. Unfortunately the Packers could not maintain this momentum and were unsuccessful in the last three singles despite two going to five sets.

SUNRAYSIA DAILY VS MAX MILLER CARPETS

Sunraysia Daily has now increased their winning streak to five matches with a 6-5 victory over Max Miller Carpets. The Carpeters pulled the rug from under the Daily combination in their first meeting however it was the performance of number two and three players Graeme O’Neill and Sam Foreman for the Daily which turned the tables in this round. O’Neill teamed up with skipper Mark Dorman in the all important first doubles and in a tremendous struggle defeated the combination of Dillon Chambers and Gavin Minter 15-13 11-9 5-11 6-11 11-8. O’Neill later met Minter in another titanic struggle to reverse a loss to Minter in round one. This match was a marathon, as the final score of 11-9 9-11 11-8 16-18 13-11 to O’Neill indicates.
Sam Foreman also played a key role for the victors winning two singles and his form has been really consistent of late. Daily skipper Mark Dorman also chipped in with two singles victories however he had his hands full with Dillon Chambers who again was on fire winning three singles. Dorman scored 8,13,8 points in the three setter to show he was able to keep the pressure on the talented youngster. With other results going their way top team Sunraysia Daily now sit one game clear of second place on the ladder doing into their next match against Mallee Bearings.

FISHERS IGA VS WEIGHTMAN’S PACKAGING

Fishers IGA scored an important win 8-3 against Weightmans Packaging. Going into this round both teams had recorded two victories with Fishers holding fourth spot by percentage and a close match was expected however the stunning form of Fishers number two Jackson Tung ensured Fishers gained the upper hand early. In his first singles Tung upset the fancied Andrew Cannard in a top class five setter winning 9-11 11-6 11-5 8-11 11-6. In the very next match he combined with skipper Gavin Carmichael to dominate the doubles against Joel Dorman and Cannard winning in straight sets. Tung barely made an error in this match and applied consistent pressure with his heavy top spin.
In his next singles Tung had to survive a match point in the fourth against a game Lee Thomas before going on to win 16-14 9-11 16-18 14-12 11-6 what a score line!! Tung then later capped off an excellent night by downing Joel Dorman in four sets to score his third win of the night. Team mate Gavin Carmichael also won three singles, although he was under extreme pressure just getting up 11-9 in the fifth against Joel Dorman.

PENNANT TWO

FISHERS IGA vs. TANKARD DENTAL

Well it has finally happened! After six rounds top team Tankard Dental have suffered their first defeat, at the hands of now second placed Fishers IGA 7-4. Fishers took an early lead of 3-1 after the first four matches. Amazingly these all went to five sets. In the first match of the night Fishers fill in Trevor Gebert fought back from a 1-2 deficit against Abraham McDonnell to win 6-11 11-2 7-11 11-7 11-6. In the second singles Tankards Henry Hornsby got his team on the board with an 11-9 in the fifth win over Robert Chiswell. Jackson Murphy for Fishers then played a great match to defeat the in form Sony Sefer in five 11-5 8-11 3-11 11-9 11-4. This was Sefer’s first defeat in three rounds and Murphy has shown extremely good form in this pennant and sits second on the singles aggregate.
The first doubles was a classic as Rob Chiswell and Murphy outlasted Sony Sefer and Henry Hornsby 14-12 10-12 9-11 11-8 12-10 what a match. Fishers now led 3-1. The second round of singles featured an excellent come back by the top team as they won all three singles to then actually lead 4-3 and it appeared a swing was creeping into the match. This momentum change however did not continue however as from this point Fishers rallied to win the next four matches to take the points.
Fishers had played well to topple their opposition with both Jackson Murphy and Trevor Gebert playing a key role to win two singles each while they both partnered skipper Rob Chiswell to win both doubles. Whilst skipper Chiswell only won one singles it was an important one claiming the scalp of Sefer I yet another five setter 12-10 7-11 14-12 10-12 11-6. Important in the final result was the four five set wins by Fishers from the five five set clashes.

MAX MILLER CARPETS vs. PINNACLE PACKERS

In an stunning turnaround, Leon ‘The Money Man’ Brown fronted up this week after it looked as though they may have had to amputate his leg after mysteriously dissappearing last week claiming he couldn’t go on because of a serious leg injury. Amazing what a week can do ! Oh and Leon, we would like to know who your Doctor is and also dont be surprised if Mark asks for a urine sample ???

After a close loss last round Pinnacle Packers bounced back this week in a solid display accounting for Max Miller Carpets 7-4. This victory enabled the Packers to claim fourth position on the ladder and it was their early form in this contest which enabled them to control the match from the outset as they raced to an early 5-1 lead before their opponents made the score look more respectable.
For the Packers it was an even team performance from the team: Arthur Paar 3 singles to maintain his hold on the singles aggregate, Leon Brown recovered from last weeks injury to win two singles while David Balshaw won one match and partnered Arthur Paar to win the first doubles to enable his team to get off to a flyer.
For the Carpeters Ashley Morrison won two singles and Laurie Plummer one. Together they defeated Paar and Brown in straight sets in the second doubles.

MALLEE BEARINGS vs. SPANLINE

Mallee Bearings were on fire in this match after Spanline won the very first singles when Arnold Jago accounted for Alex Keegan in four sets. Amazingly this was to be Spanline’s only success as Mallee Bearings clicked and rattled off the next ten matches to totally dominate the contest and win 10-1 in an amazing score line. Not many would have seen such a result coming as going into this round Spanline were second on the ladder and Mallee Bearings second last with only one win. With four rounds to play Mallee Bearings now have a realistic chance of playing finals table tennis.
Mallee Bearings skipper Seval Fuat was unavailable and his replacement Anthony Fox did win three singles in a fine display, however regulars Matt Burns and Alex Keegan were also on the ball with Burns winning three singles for the third time this season, he now sits third on the singles aggregate along with Sony Sefer. This was also Alex Keegan’s finest performance for the season as the Bearings combination steam rolled their opposition.
Spanline will look at this as maybe a loss they had to have and will look to bounce back this week. They sit equal second on the ladder and this week face up against Fishers who are equal with them on the ladder.

PENNANT THREE

Pennant Three continued to suffer from absent players and for the third week in a row, one match was played between two players per side. In other items, Max Miller Carpets continued on at the top of the table with a strong win over Sunraysia Daily, and a question “Does going on holidays help your table tennis?”

MAX MILLER CARPETS vs. SUNRAYSIA DAILY

Max Miller Carpets fielded their usual side (Karina Sullivan, Gary Hughes and Damen Southgate) to take on Mark Kerr’s Sunraysia Daily team. Sabrina Fitzpatrick was unfortunately absent for the Dailies, and her place was taken by her daughter Mary.
Mark Kerr drew first blood in what would indicate the sort of night the Sunraysia Daily team was going to have. It took Mark five tough sets to overcome a very determined Damen Southgate. Damen in fact took the first two sets 11-6, 11-8 before Mark could get going to take the third 11-8. Damen knew he was in with a chance against Mark and the next two sets were fought out bitterly, but Damen went down 14-12, 12-10 to leave the table a very disappointed boy.
Karly Leach was mysteriously off her game (compared to her recent form) and failed to win any of her singles matches, although it must be said that when these two sides met in the first round, she failed to win any matches then either.
Mary Fitzpatrick, having big shoes to fill, came back from holidays rejuvenated and although failing to win any matches, gave a good account of herself, taking a set from each of her opponents and keeping the matches tight to the finish.
Mark Kerr tried hard to keep his side in the match, winning all his singles, against Damen as mentioned, defeating Karina in four sets 11-8, 6-11, 11-8, 11-8 and Gary Hughes again in four 11-7, 11-6, 9-11, 11-7. His win in the doubles with Karly over Karina and Damen in an entertaining match 11-7, 16-14, 10-12, 11-7 made up the four rubbers for the Dailies for the night.
All the Max Miller players won two singles, only losing to Mark Kerr. Karina defeated Mary Fitzpatrick in four sets 11-6, 10-12, 11-6, 11-9, lost to Mark in four as mentioned and easily accounted for Karly in three 11-2, 11-7, 11-4.
Gary defeated Karly in three 11-5, 11-5, 11-6, but had to work much harder to beat Mary 11-9, 11-9, 11-13, 11-6. He lost to Mark 7-11, 6-11, 11-9, 7-11.
After Damen’s initial loss to Mark in the first match, he then won his other two singles matches, defeating Karly in the second round of singles 11-8, 13-11, 11-8 and Mary in the third round 11-8, 7-11, 11-8, 11-8 but lost in his doubles match with Karina against Mark and Karly in four sets.
Max Millers were in control of the match throughout, leading three rubbers to one, then later five rubbers to two, before winning seven to four. The Sunraysia Daily trio could not put any pressure on their opponents and the final score line of seven rubbers to four now confirms the Carpeters as the team to beat for the flag. The only consolation that Sunraysia Daily could take from this match is that when these two sides played in the first round, they lost eight rubbers to three, so they improved their losing margin a little!!

FISHERS IGA vs. WEIGHTMANS PACKAGING

The composition of the winners of this match, Fishers IGA, has changed somewhat since these two sides met in Round 1. At that time Brian Hosking (now retired for the season with an injury) and Zubair Shahzad (absent due to work) were in the team, but Brian has now been replaced by free-swinging big-hitting Nicholas Dorman and George Papanicolaou replacing Zubair Shahzad. The inclusion of these two players to assist Rachel Fitzpatrick each week has certainly increased their firepower!!
First match of the night though, was between father and daughter, Peter and Rachel Fitzpatrick. And so to the question, “Does going on holidays help your table tennis?” Gauging from the result of this match, it is doubtful if Peter Fitzpatrick would answer “Yes” to that question. While he was getting his eye in, finding his range etc. etc, Rachel took the first two sets 11-9, 11-6. He finally got himself organised and put a score on the board, winning the third 11-5, but Rachel had worked up too much steam to be stopped in the fourth, and took that set 11-9, and the match. Maybe holidays really are for the kids!!
Jeremy Corrin then played George Papanicolaou in a match which was to signal the start of the best night to date in this competition yet for Jeremy. He played very well all night, and in the four matches he played, he only lost to the rampaging Nicholas Dorman in his second singles. This match against Papanicolaou though, was a beauty. It also had shades of George’s match last week against Karly Leach when he was leading two rubbers to nil, only to lose in five. Similarly, this match went to the same pattern, George winning the first two sets 11-8, 11-6. Jeremy however, never gave up, continued with his game plan, continued to go for his shots, steadied, took the third set 11-8, levelled to take the fourth 11-5 and then stormed home in the fifth and took it 11-6. The smile on his face at the end said it all!!
Nicholas Dorman then played Nikki Mayger to win the first of his three singles matches for the night. None of the Weightmans Packaging players had an answer to Nicholas’s explosive (but thankfully somewhat unreliable) forehand. Many a time the Weightmans players failed to get bat to ball after one of these unguided missiles left Nicholas’s bat. Whilst he was sighting up his forehand in the first set, Nikki accrued 10 points, he found his aim perfectly in the second blasting Nikki off the table 11-0, and then lost aim again in the third to allow Nikki to stay with him, but lose 12-14. In his second singles, Nicholas beat Jeremy in three 11-4, 11-9, 12-10 and in his third match dropped his only set for the night to Peter Fitzpatrick before winning 11-9, 6-11, 13-11, 11-9.
The first doubles between Nicholas and George at one end and Peter and Jeremy at the other showed that steady play can at times prevail over big hitting. This match went to five sets, neither side being able to string two winning sets together, thus setting the match up for the fifth set decider. In the end Peter and Jeremy prevailed taking the match 4-11, 11-4, 8-11, 11-3, 11-9. This is the Weightmans Packaging’s pair’s second doubles win in a row, indicating that Corrin is stepping up to the higher level of play in this grade.
Of the other matches, Rachel Fitzpatrick had a good night, winning two of her singles, the first being against her father as already mentioned, and the second a nail-biter against Nikki Mayger. Rachel was down two sets to love 4-11, 9-11and really looked to be out of the match, before she regrouped and stormed back to win the next three 11-7, 11-7, 13-11. Later in the night she paired with Nicholas “Missile” Dorman to win their doubles against Peter and Nikki in a five set match in which both the ladies were able to have some influence on the score, both playing well. In an entertaining encounter the Fishers pair got home 11-9, 7-11, 11-5, 7-11, 11-7, and that match won them the night, the score at that time being six rubbers to two.
George Papanicolaou, although losing to Jeremy Corrin early in the night, made amends and won his two other singles, beating Peter Fitzpatrick in four 14-12, 5-11, 12-10, 11-8 in a fairly tight match, and easily beating Nikki Mayger 11-4, 11-5, 11-1.
For the winners then Nicholas Dorman won three, and George and Rachel two each, making seven, plus one doubles making a total of eight rubbers to Weightmans three courtesy of Corrin’s two singles wins and the other doubles.
When these sides met in Round 1 Weightmans won comfortably seven rubbers to four, but this time the boot was well and truly on the other foot, Fishers running out winners eight rubbers to three.

MALLEE BEARINGS vs. PINNACLE PACKERS

This match would probably have been a close affair had both sides been able to field their full complement of players, but unfortunately that was not to be. Mallee Bearings were without Delaney Murphy and Duncan Kelly, and for Pinnacle Packers Peter Kelly was absent. Rachel Fitzpatrick filled in in the Mallee Bearings side to make this a two-a-side match.
In this shortened match, Colin Moore led his side to victory with wins in both his singles matches, beating both Fitzpatrick girls in three sets, Bernadette 11-9, 11-6, 11-3 and Mary 11-8, 11-5, 11-5. Their third win was courtesy of Rachel Fitzpatrick who defeated Mary in a good five setter. Rachel gave Mary a chance, trailing at one stage one set to two 8-11, 11-7, 11-8. Mary however could not go on with it, and Rachel came back to take the last two sets 12-10, 11-7.
The Packers did manage a couple of wins, Bernadette and Mary combining in the doubles to down Colin and Rachel in a good four set match. Bernadette and Mary stamped their authority on this match winning a long first set 17-15, and a tight second set 11-8. Colin and Rachel regrouped to take the third 11-9, but it was not enough to unsettle the Packers duo and they took the fourth convincingly 11-6.
Their second win was courtesy of Bernadette who struggled to find any touch on this night, having not played for some five weeks. It took her five sets to beat her in-form sister Rachel 8-11, 11-6, 11-9, 4-11, 11-6. A shame this match was so short, as Bernadette thrives on hitting lots of balls, and this match was over quite quickly and early.
The Round 1 result for these two teams was a win to Mallee Bearings six rubbers to five, and again this time Mallee Bearings won, three rubbers to two.

PENNANT FOUR

BISHOP BUILDERS vs. FISHERS IGA

Fishers IGA have advanced to first position on the pennant four ladder courtesy of their narrow 6-5 win over Bishop Builders. These two teams now have four wins from six starts each with Fishers enjoying a 1% lead by percentage. Fishers’ skipper returned from the Meatloaf concert in good form winning three singles.

Fill in Wendy Simpson played a key role early winning the first singles of the night for Fishers and then teamed with Mick to win the first doubles in four sets against Leonie Dunkley and Sandra Southgate. These two victories enabled Fishers to take a 3-1 lead and they were always able to hold a narrow lead until late in the match when Paul Fitzpatrick, all refreshed from his holiday to the Grampians, won his second singles. The decider was a good four set contest with Shirley Whitecross defeating Sandra Southgate 11-8 9-11 11-6 11-1 to give Fishers a hard earned victory.

MAX MILLER CARPETS vs. MALLEE BEARINGS

In another close result Mallee Bearings opened up a two game break on the ladder when they defeated their opponents Max Miller Carpets 6-5 despite Sam Hensgen winning five singles while playing in two spots for his team due to new recruit Shane Koelmeyer being unavailable.
For Mallee Bearings Lachlan Kelly had a good night winning two singles and importantly he took part in both doubles victories which gave his team the edge. The second doubles was a highlight with Kelly and team mate Ben Hosking up against it after trailing two games to love before striking back in excellent fashion to win 9-11 9-11 11-6 11-8 11-5 to level the match at four rubbers all. Lachlan’s only loss was a five setter against Sam Hensgen. He dropped the first two games, fought back well and then went down in the fifth, the final score line in Hensgen’s favour 11-4 11-5 9-11 6-11 11-8.
The match went to the wire and at five rubbers all Carpeter’s Gabriel McDonnell fresh with a few tips from his lap top matched up against Ben Hosking to decide which team would grab the points. In an exciting tussle the youngster McDonnell grabbed the first two games by the narrowest margin. To his credit Hosking fought back and raced through the third and then levelled the match at two games all. The fifth was a real struggle and the improving Hosking got his team over the line 10-12 11-13 11-2 11-6 11-9 a great finish!!!!!
