PENNANT TWO
Three very close matches this week. All matches were decided with a winning margin of 6 rubbers to 5, and all matches were decided in the last rubber of the night.
– Max Miller Carpets 6 (Ross Humphreys, Alex Keegan 2, Matthew Burns 1) d Mallee Bearings 5 (Ashley Morrison 3, Trevor Gebert 1)
Mallee Bearings have been at the top of the ladder since about the first round, but a loss in this match, coupled with the win by Fishers IGA, see them drop back to second. Winners Max Miller Carpets had the services of stand-out fill-in Alex Keegan subbing for an absent Karina Sullivan. 
This was Alex’s first match of the year, but he played as though he hadn’t missed a game all year !! Playing at number three, Keegan won two singles to help his side to this narrow win. Not that he had things all his own way … every match he played in, including the doubles, went to five sets. First up he defeated last year’s Pennant Three team mate Peter Fitzpatrick in an entertaining match. Next, he stretched Trevor Gebert to the limit, taking that match 9-11, 11-5, 11-9, 12-14, 11-7. These two wins were a valuable contribution to his team’s tally, as it was apparent that form was not going to matter much in this match. Captain for Mallee Bearings Ashley Morrison continued his good form, winning all his singles, thus consolidating him in third place on the aggregate (19 games), three games clear of fourth placed Arthur Paar. Morrison and number three Fitzpatrick also took the second doubles match against Matthew Burns and Keegan 13-11, 9-11, 11-7, 10-12, 11-8 to level the scores at that stage 4 rubbers all. Morrison then took the win against Keegan (5 sets of course) in the first of the final round of singles, to set his side up with a 5-4 lead, but his teammates Gebert and Fitzpatrick could not assist, and faded, losing the final two rubbers in three sets each. A very entertaining night, Max Miller Carpets winning 25 games to 22.
– Fishers IGA 6 (Seval Fuat, Sony Sefer 2, Colin Moore 1) d Pinnacle Packers 5 (Daniel Jansen 3, Leon Brown 1)
A three game haul by Pinnacle Packers captain Daniel Jansen to lift him one game clear of Sony Sefer on the aggregate, was not enough to get his side home in this encounter with the relentless Fishers IGA. A steady performance from the Fishers trio saw Sony Sefer win two, Seval Fuat also two, and number three Colin Moore winning the vital final rubber of the night against his opposite number Glen Bell. Sefer and Fuat took the first doubles against Jansen and his deputy Leon Brown in straight sets 8, 8 and 6. That was all they needed to get the four championship points from this clash. Rubbers in this match were short and sweet, their being only a total of 37 games played in the whole match, this being made up of 7 three set rubbers and 4 four set rubbers. Jansen, for example, lost only one set in his 3 rubber haul, this to arch-rival, and now aggregate number two, Sony Sefer. Jansen won that match 11-9, 8-11, 11-5, 13-11. The result of this match had a two-fold effect, firstly Fishers jumped Mallee Bearings to go to the top of the ladder, and secondly Pinnacle Packers’ loss coupled with a win by Tankard Dental saw them slip out of the four, back to fifth.
– Tankard Dental 6 (Robert Chiswell, Andrew Jones, Connor Lavery 2) d Spanline 5 (Laurie Plummer, Arnold Jago, Arthur Paar 1)
Connor Lavery is a player of the future in Sunraysia table tennis. His form has been patchy, not uncommon for a young player, but in this match, he won two vital games to give his team the win, and lift them from fifth to fourth on the ladder. In the first match of the night, he had Spanline’s number one Arthur Paar two sets down before Paar gathered himself and managed to level at 2 sets all. Lavery then settled, Paar could not continue his momentum, and Lavery took the fifth 11-9. His second singles victory was in the final and deciding match of the night, this time against Spanline’s number two Arnold Jago. Jago had his hands full with Lavery, and was trying all the tricks he has accumulated over his many years of competition in this match. Games alternated, Lavery taking the first and third 5 and 7, Jago the second and fourth 5 and 6. And so it came to the last set, and Lavery’s constant top spinning forehands were consistent enough to overcome Jago’s spinning, chopping, change of pace forehands and backhands. Lavery took the fifth 11-8. Only Spanline’s number three Laurie Plummer could subdue young Lavery. 
Whilst his more illustrious playing partners struggled for five sets to lose to him, Plummer took only three sets to overpower his young opponent, 5, 9 and 5. And whilst Lavery was the star of the night, he of course had the back-up of his captain Robert Chiswell and number two Andrew Jones. They also won two singles and this was the six they accumulated to get their team over the line. Both the doubles matches then, went to the older trio, Paar and Jago winning in five against Chiswell and Jones, and Paar and Plummer needing five sets also to overcome Chiswell and Lavery. Another high quality match, 6 rubbers to 5 and 24 games apiece. Tankard Dental now join Spanline on 16 points on the ladder, but an inferior percentage see them one spot behind, in fourth.
PENNANT THREE
The big news this week is that Darren Greaves lost his first singles match for the year. The much anticipated clash with coming-man Matt Ljubic resulted in young Ljubic taking a comfortable victory.

Despite defeating aggregate leader Darren Greaves, and bagging three singles wins for the night, Matt Ljubic and his team-mates Emily Carmichael and Karly Leach could not gather the required six rubbers for victory in this match against run-away ladder leaders Weightmans Packaging. Carmichael chipped in with two singles against opponents Duncan Brady (3 sets) and Jeremy Corrin (5 sets), but the inability of Karly Leach to bag one, or for the team to combine well enough to win a doubles, was the telling factor which saw their score remain on 5 rubbers at the end of the night. Leach and Corrin had a titanic tussle in the final and deciding rubber. Locked at 5 rubbers all, the two number three’s were given the responsibility of going to the table, and to come back with the win. Neither of them shied away from their responsibility either. Leach is known as one of the most dogged players, and Corrin on his night is capable of anything (good and bad !!). In this match, they both played to their potential, Corrin taking the first 12-10, Leach the second 14-12, then a brief period of quieter play, the third going to Leach 11-7, and the fourth to Corrin 11-5. As they say, there are no more sets after the fifth, and both players gave it their all, but there can be only one winner, and Corrin finally got home 14-12. So, this match could have seen Weightmans’ first loss, but didn’t, and Max Miller might just be the better for the loss, knowing that they can still improve, and that their opponents are not unbeatable.
– Mallee Bearings 7 (Bernadette Fitzpatrick 3, Sabrina Fitzpatrick 2, Mick Bacon 1) d Fishers IGA 4 (Vaughan Waters 2, Peter Kelly 1)
A fine all-round team performance from Mallee Bearings Bernadette Fitzpatrick, Sabrina Fitzpatrick and Mick Bacon saw the fourth placed team jump their opponents and land in third place on the ladder as a result of this victory. 
Bernadette bagged three wins, Sabrina two and Mick one and added to the doubles win of Bernadette and Sabrina when they easily overcame Peter Kelly and Callan Humphries 2, 7 and 9 Mallee Bearings ran out fairly easy winners 7 rubbers to 4 and 25 games to 17. Opposing captain Peter Kelly was unusually quiet in this game, winning a solitary singles, but joining Vaughan Waters for a win in the first doubles against Bernadette and Mick 6-11, 11-8, 11-7, 11-7. Waters played like a good number two, winning two singles, firstly against Mick Bacon in four sets, and later against Sabrina in four also. Fill-in Callan Humphries almost upset Mick Bacon in the final match when he took Mick to five sets. Bacon led two sets to love, then Humphries fought back to level two sets all, but Bacon had too much in reserve, and took the fifth 11-4. By dint of her three singles wins, Bernadette rocketed up the aggregate ladder going from eleventh to seventh, leaping her mother Sabrina, Damen Southgate, Gary Hughes and Karly Leach.
PENNANT FOUR
In the singles aggregate race Sam Hensgen still leads however now only by two from brother Ryan. Ryan won three this week however Sam went down 10-12 in a great five setter against the consistent Cole Keegan who won three singles for the first time. “Consistency” Cole until this round had won two singles each week.

The first doubles was also a lengthy five setter when Bishop Builders pair Sam Hensgen and Paul Fitzpatrick combined to just defeat Ben Hosking and Cole Keegan 11-7 7-11 12-10 8-11 18-16, a great match.
– Fishers IGA 6 (Ryan Hensgen 3, Paul Fitzpatrick 2) d Mallee Bearings 5 (Claire Ljubic 2, Shirley Whitecross, Ellie Midgley 1)
Ryan won three singles for the night to continue his consistent season. Fill-in Paul Fitzpatrick then grabbed the points for Fishers when he accounted for Shirley Whitecross in straight sets to end the five match winning streak by Mallee “Girl Power” Bearings. In the last singles Ellie Midgley defeated Helen Frania to make the score more respectable. Whilst Helen did not win a singles her contribution in the first doubles was vital to her team’s success on the night, this win taking Fishers to third on the ladder only two wins from the all important doubles chance.
