Choices Thanh Nguyen slowed the run on for Cookes by defeating Ash Morrison before Cookes ran through the next three matches to lead by an amazing 9-1. Choices skipper Jamie Kealley stopped the second run on to reduce the deficit and final result to 2-9, a percentage booster being just what Cookes needed.

Sammy’s Slammers 6 Quentin Clark (2), James Jarvis (2), Ryan Hensgen (1) defeated Mallee Meats 5 Michael Tan (3), Harry Gujral (1), Deegan Kerslake (0).
The Sammys triggered a bit of an upset in round 14 by defeating top team Mallee Meats. The two sides traded shots back and forth all night until it was 5-4 to Meats in the last block of singles, wherein No. 2 James Jarvis took down opposite No. 2 Harry Gujral after being down two sets to nil. This game would ultimately tip the scale in favour of the Sammys, as they would eventually win the night 6-5.
Despite the disappointing finish he was going to have at the end of the evening, Gujral started the night with a strong win over Hensgen, 11-2, 12-10, 11-2. Clark then took his first win by defeating Kerslake 11-9, 11-7, 11-7, while teammate Jarvis wrestled with the formidable Tan, eventually going down after four sets, 7-11, 8-11, 11-9, 7-11. Things really heated up in the first doubles wherein Clark and Jarvis went head-to-head against Tan and Gujral but after five sets couldn’t quite make it stick, losing 9-11, 11-7, 7-11, 11-8, 9-11.
With Meats now 3-1 up, Clark shot down Gujral after a four-set tussle, 4-11, 11-5, 11-9, 11-9. Tan then clapped back by defeating Hensgen, 11-7, 11-2, 11-4, whilst Jarvis and Kerslake faced off, with the latter finding no luck, 2-11, 8-11, 7-11. Meats still had the lead at 4-3, but the Sammys were undaunted. In the second doubles match they opened strong, winning the first two sets 11-8, 11-8, but then Meats found a weak point and exploited it, taking
the third and fourth sets 11-8, 11-7. If Meats could win this doubles match, they would only need one more rubber to win the night. They clashed hard with the Sammys in the fifth set, putting up a good fight but coming up short at end, 9-11; levelling the score 4 rubbers apiece.
Clark and Tan then went at it, with the latter taking the win after a tough five set match, 5-11, 11-8, 11-6, 10-12, 11-8. Up next was the unexpected win that arguably got the Sammys the win, wherein Gujral won the first two sets against Jarvis, 11-6, 11-4, but then lost his grip on the match and couldn’t recover, losing the next three sets in a row, 11-6, 11-9, 11-9. Finally, at 5-5, Hensgen and Kerslake faced off with Kerslake taking out the second set but losing in the end, 9-11, 11-6, 6-11, 2-11.

Final score 6 rubbers to 5 and 23 games to 21.

PENNANT FOUR:
With only 2 rounds to be played before the Finals, all teams are doing their best to climb the Ladder and give themselves a better chance. Both tussles were pretty close, with the Doubles being the deciding point in both wins.

– Weightmans Packaging 7 (Glenn Leeson. Jakob Grzan 2, Conner Burnett 1) d Dunkley Scales 4 (Rodney Galvin 3, Maria Starikov 1)
Dunkley – Rodney Galvin, Maria Staricov and Cetty Bonaccorso. Weightman’s – Glenn Leeson, Jakob Grzan and Conner Burnett.
Cetty took on the Jakob, with his ever expanding game, which was a tough ask for her first battle of the night, with Weightman’s number two penciling in their first Rubber after a comfortable win.
Conner put up a good fight against Rod in the first couple of sets, but couldn’t keep up with the experience of Dunkley’s Captain in the third, with Rod pulling in the win.
Maria makes life difficult for some, with her quick reflexes and forced the second set out to 12, but Glenn seemed to have her measure with a three set win.
Glenn and Jakob had an excellent match in the Doubles against Rod and Maria. It was a five set skirmish, but each set was fairly even, with Weightman’s grabbing the first two, before a fight back saw the next couple landing with Dunkley. It would be the Weightman’s combination who would come away winners.
With Dunkley only holding one Rubber, it was imperative for them to stop Weightman’s momentum, so it would be interesting to see how Jakob would cope with Rod’s game. Well, Jakob certainly got him shaking in the opening set, with Rod coming away with a 13/11 win, in a full on bout, before grabbing the much needed Rubber.
Cetty’s game will definitely improve as time passes, but with two little ones, we take our hat off to her in committing a night to Table Tennis. It was another tough game for her when she faced Glenn, with three sets being completed very quickly.
Conner brought out his curly shots against Maria, but it didn’t seem to hinder Dunkley’s number two, who took the win and allowed her team a bit of respite.
Dunkley now only trailed by one Rubber and would be hoping for a win in this Doubles. Rod was now pairing up with Cetty and taking on the Weightman’s couple of Glenn and Conner. This match was red hot all the way. Weightman’s snatched the first set, but a determined Dunkley gave them a shake up and pinched the next two, with some fantastic rallies. The fight went on for a further two sets, with Weightman’s taking control, to put them up by two.
What would it be, Weighman’s only needed one more for victory, or would Dunkley pull in the next three matches ?

Rod found the first couple of sets against Glenn easier than he thought, marking up wins in both, with Glenn finding a way to grab the next, but he wasn’t able to continue that form, with Dunkley getting their fourth and Rod pocketing his third Singles.
With the pressure building, this match could have gone either way, but it was Jakobs consistency that converted the win against Maria in three sets, with the reward on the night victory.
With neither Cetty or Conner having a win thus far, which way would it fall. Cetty put together some classy shots, but Conner was able to counter and produce a seventh Rubber for his team.
WINNER : Weightman’s Packaging 7 to Dunkley Scales 4.
GAMES : Weightman’s 22 to Dunkley 16.
– Mallee Meats 7 (Kym Sykes 3, Nathan Beard, Jenny Leach 1) d Tankard Dental 4 (Tom Gilmour, Darren Bottams 2)
Mallee – Kym Sykes, Nathan Beard and Jen Leach. Tankard – Tom Gilmour, Darren Bottams and Jake Hines.
The opening match was between Jen and Darren, with Tankards number two in recovery mode, after a fall in practice. Maybe this might slow Darren down and give Jen some sort of chance. Short answer, no. He hadn’t lost any of his fire power, wiping out the Mallee Lass in three sets.
The pressure Jen was up against in the last, was pretty much duplicated in the Kym V Jake contest, with Jake under pressure from the word go and Kym bringing in the Rubber.
Nathan stood up pretty well against Tom, although the match was completed in three, he did force Tom to 12 in the last set.
Kym and Nathan were then called up to played Tom and Darren, who had just marked up a singles win each, so this could be close. Ahhh, nope wrong again, it was over in a flash with a comprehensive win to Mallee.
If anyone was going to stress Mallee’s Captain, it was Darren and he did snag one set, but Kym has a very impressive game, which is difficult to break through. This Rubber would put Mallee up by one.
Jen did her darndest to find a way around Tom’s game and was successful in picking up one set, but in the finish, there were not enough of Jen’s shots hitting the mark and lots of Tom’s doing just that.

Nathan made short work of his match with Jake, with a quick three setter giving Mallee the advantage, 4 to 3.
The Captain’s and number three’s were now going to battle in the last Doubles. There were quite a few very nice shots from Tom and Jake, but Kym and Jen were focused and determined, which enabled a stress free win for Mallee in three.
With only one more Rubber needed for Mallee, Tankards Captain had to discover a way to close down Kym. Tom took his opportunities, but it just wasn’t happening for him and Kym notched up the sixth Rubber and his 3rd Singles win, which will give him a mighty lead in the aggregate.
The wrangle between Nathan and Darren was sensational, with Nathan rattling Darren, to generate two great wins in the opening sets and it seriously looked like Mallee’s number two would come away with the match. But hats off to Darren with a massive come back, completely turning his game around and taking the Rubber.
The last match of the night gave Jen her first win, in a tricky game against Jake, who has some very sneaky serves.
