Doubles Round

Round eight of the Sunraysia Table Tennis senior pennant featured doubles matches only. This was a new innovation introduced by the STTA for the first time last year and played on a trial basis. A survey of players indicated that it should be continued into this pennant.

The round known as “Doubles Round” pitted all teams playing against each other on the one night with three doubles taking place and then moving on to the next team, four points up for taking for the top three teams on the night. These points are then included on the current seasons ladder.

The format for each team versus team contest was player one and two versus player one and two followed by 1&3 vs 1&3 with a final match of 2&3 versus 2&3.

There was some outstanding table tennis played and in all there were forty-five doubles matches with twenty-one going to a maximum of three sets. Doubles is an exciting and important component of the sport each round of the season.

The best performed player in this round was Cookes Pools & Spas number three Russell Walder who played in nine winning matches of the ten he played.

PENNANT ONE

The Cookes Pools & Spas trio of Jackson Tung, Paul Kealley and Russell Walder were the big achievers for the round by winning against every team and picking up an important four points to move from fourth to third on the ladder. They were successful in eleven of their fifteen matches. In an outstanding performance number two Paul Kealley and number three player Russell Walder won their five matches in a dominant display while Walder combined with skipper Jackson Tung to win four of their five matches. Number three player Russell Walder played a key role for his team winning nine of the ten matches he took part in.

This had been an excellent team effort from Cookes and fortunate that Tung lined up to play as he had been doubtful during the week.

Second placed Regional Taxation Services also picked up an important four points winning four of their five matches. Skipper Matt Ljubic and Thanh Nguyen were in good form winning their five matches including a straight sets defeat of leading Mallee Bearings pair Arhuang Lau and Mark Dorman. In a solid team performance Ljubic also combined with Jamie Kealley to win three matches as did Nguyen and Kealley. The four points gained by RTS now draws them level on points with ladder leader Mallee Bearings who unusually did not score any points this round.

Choices Flooring (Wayne Carmichael, Liam Wood and Daniel Jansen) who have been languishing at the foot of the ladder all season were the third team on the night to pick up a valuable four points and all of a sudden, their season has been rejuvenated.

By narrowly losing 1-2 to Choices Flooring Mildura, Tankard Dental finished one win out of the points resulting in them dropping from third to fourth, while ladder leader Mallee Bearings had an off night by their standards to finish sixth in the seedings.

Leading doubles combinations for the round (five matches) – Matt Ljubic and Thanh Nguyen 5, Paul Kealley and Russell Walder 5, Jackson Tung and Russell Walder 4,

Players to perform well individually – Russell Walder 9 wins from 10 matches played, Matt Ljubic 8, Thanh Nguyen 8, Paul Kealley 7, Kate Carmichael 6, Jackson Tung 6.

PENNANT TWO:

Round 8’s doubles night saw heavy-hitters Mallee Meats defeat all 4 of their opponents, while second-placed Choices Flooring took out 3 wins. Cookes Pools and Spas picked up two wins, while Pinnacle Packers only netted 1. Fourth-placed Weightman’s Packaging went home empty handed, but all teams performed well, and all the players had a good opportunity to sharpen up their doubles skills.

Mallee Meats 2 Jason Gifkins, Harry Gujral, James Jarvis defeated Weightmans Packaging 1 John Fitzpatrick, Sony Sefer, Therese Fitzpatrick.

First up was Weightman’s Packaging versus Mallee Meats. Weightmans narrowly beat Meats in their last matchup, but Meats were ready this time. The first game was the closest with Fitzpatrick and Sefer getting their only set for this matchup, going down in three 5-11, 11-8, 9-11. The two Fitzpatricks then took on Gifkins and Jarvis, losing 7-11, 5-11. No. 2 Sefer then joined Therese Fitzpatrick for the third doubles, in which they were able to topple Meats soundly 11-3, 11-9.

Final score 2 rubbers to 1 and 4 games to 3.

Choices Flooring Mildura 3 Ashley Morrison, Terry Martin Andrew Jones defeated Pinnacle Packers 0 Marcus Cimino, Peter Midgley, Peter Bishop.

Packers were without their No. 3 player Peter Fitzpatrick for the doubles night, so veteran player Peter Bishop kindly filled in for him. Captain Cimino and Midgely first went up against Morrsion and Martin and after opening strong, failed to seal the deal, losing 11-8, 8-11, 3-11. Choices Flooring kept the pressure up, taking the next two games in two sets. First, Morrison and Jones against Cimino and Bishop, 11-9, 12-10 and then Martin and Jones versus Midgley and Bishop 11-9, 11-7.

Final score 3 rubbers to 0 and 6 games to 1.

Mallee Meats 2 Jason Gifkins, Harry Gujral, James Jarvis defeated Pinnacle Packers 1 Marcus Cimino, Peter Midgley, Peter Bishop.

The top team then took on the bottom team with fifth placed Pinnacle Packers managing to snatch one rubber from the unstoppable Mallee Meats. The duo of Gifkins and Gujral proved too good for Cimino and Midgley, with the pair going down 7-11, 8-11. Meat then took the lead in the next game 11-4, but Packers soon got away from them and won 11-7, 11-5. The score at 1-1, the No. 3’s then faced off, with Meats taking home the win 11-7, 11-6.

Final score 2 rubbers to 1 and 5 games to 2.

Choices Flooring Mildura 3 Ashley Morrison, Terry Martin, Andrew Jones defeated Cookes Pools & Spas 0 Quentin Clark, Duy Truong, Michael Tan.

Up next, second-placed Choices Flooring squarely defeated the third placed Cookes. The first set played was the only set that Cookes won, taking it 11-9, and then going down 7-11, 8-11 to their opponents. The No. 1’s and 2’s matchup was tight, but Choices Flooring had it all under control winning in two sets 11-8, 12-10, and likewise in the last game with Choices Flooring comfortably winning 11-6, 11-7.

Final score 3 rubbers to 0 and 6 games to 1.

Pinnacle Packers 3 Marcus Cimino, Peters Midgley, Peter Bishop defeated Weightmans Packaging 0 John Fitzpatrick, Sony Sefer, Therese Fitzpatrick.

A few three setters in this matchup but Weightmans still failed to make a dent in this competition. In the first match, Packers pair Cimino and Midgley took the first set 11-9, Weightmans stayed in it by winning the next 11-7 but then Packers put their foot down and took the last set 11-3. The Weightmans Fitzpatrick duo then lost the second match in straight sets 11-9, 11-4, granting Packers the victory at 2-0. Weightmans showed some spirit in the last, winning the first set 11-8, but it was too little too late as they went down in the next two 7-11, 4-11.

Final score 3 rubbers to 0 and 6 games to 2.

Mallee Meats 2 Jason Gifkins, Harry Gujral, James Jarvis defeated Cookes Pools & Spas 1 Quentin Clark, Duy Truong, Michael Tan.

Cookes gave Meats a run for their money in their matchup, taking the first game in straight sets 11-9, 12-10. Despite this, they were unable to keep up with Meats in the following games, with Clark and Tan going down to Gifkins and Jarvis in straight sets 4-11, 10-12 and then with the score 1-1,

Truong and Tan gaining the first set in the final game 11-6, but Meats fought them back and won the match 11-7, 11-8.

Final score 2 rubbers to 1 and 4 games to 3.

Cookes Pools & Spas 2 Quentin Clark, Duy Truong, Michael Tan defeated Weightmans Packaging 1 John Fitzpatrick, Sony Sefer, Therese Fitzpatrick.

Cookes then went on to play against Weightmans, who so far had had no luck this night. In this matchup though, they came out firing, taking the first game in three 11-3, 5-11,13-11 but then proceeded to lose the next two games in three sets. The Fitzpatrick siblings struggled against Clark and Tan but to no avail, losing 9-11,11-4, 5-11. Then Therese Fitzpatrick paired up with Sefer to take on Truong and Tan at 1 game all. Again they took the first set 11-7 but failed to keep the pressure on their opponents and went down in the next two sets 13-11, 11-5.

Final score 2 rubbers to 1 and 5 games to 4.

Mallee Meats 3 Jason Gifkins, Harry Gujral, James Jarvis defeated Choices Flooring Mildura 0 Ashley Morrison, Terry Martin, Andrew Jones.

Another slam-dunk win for Meats, besting second-placed Choices Flooring 3 rubbers to 0. First up, Morrison and Martin narrowly took the first set of the first game 12-10, but then Gifkins and Gujral retaliated hard taking the next two sets 11-3, 12-10. Keeping their momentum, Gifkins and Jarvis took the next game in straight sets 11-3, 14-12 and then had some resistance from Choices Flooring in the last game. Choices Flooring confidently took the first set 11-2, but even with this under their belt Meats somehow managed to turn the game around and win 11-5, 11-9.

Final score 3 rubbers to 0 and 6 games to 2.

Cookes Pools & Spas 2 Quentin Clark, Duy Truong, Michael Tan defeated Pinnacle Packers 1 Marcus Cimino, Peter Midgley, Peter Bishop.

Cookes picked up their second win for the night by defeating Pinnacle Packers 2-1. They shot ahead early winning the first two games in straight sets, giving Packers no breathing room. In the first game, they took it 11-4, 11-8, and then without missing a beat, won the second game a slick 11-5, 11-6. Packers were then left to pick up the pieces, fighting their way through to win the last game in three sets 12-10, 8-11, 11-9.

Final score 2 rubbers to 1 and 5 games to 2.

Choices Flooring Mildura 3 Ashley Morrison, Terry Martin, Andrew Jones defeated Weightmans Packaging 0 John Fitzpatrick, Sony Sefer, Therese Fitzpatrick.

In the final matchup of the evening, Choices Flooring scored their third victory of the night over the flailing Weightmans who came close in the first game, taking the first set 11-8 but just failing to nab a second set and losing 9-11, 7-11. It was more bad news for Weightmans as the match went on, as they lost to the Morrison/Jones duo in the second 11-13, 4-11 and finally dropping the third game in straight sets as well to Martin and Jones 5-11, 11-13.

Final score 3 rubbers to 0 and 6 games to 1.

PENNANT THREE:

Second on the ladder Exposed Signage/Apparel were the big winners in the “Doubles Round” number two, held this round. First introduced in 2024 by the STTA and the brainchild of former President Peter Fitzpatrick all players took part in doubles matches only.

Each team lined up against the other opposition teams with player one and two versus player one and two starting proceedings followed by player one and three pitted against player one and three. To finish the match player two would then combine with player three and the opposing number two and three.

The Exposed Signage/Apparel trio of Karly Leach, Deegan Kerslake and Brenden Johnson were in excellent form winning all their matches.

In round one they defeated third placed Regional Taxation Services 3-0 although Karly and Deegan had to fight all the way to get over the line 11-8 12-14 12-10 against Sabrina Fitzpatrick and Sam Campbell in an excellent match. In round two the Exposed team defeated Sammy’s Slammers 2-1 and in round three they destroyed the top team Weightmans Packaging 3-0 in a strong display.

In this pennant four points were up for grabs for the top two teams and while the remaining teams all won one match each it was the top team of Weightmans Packaging who finished second on a count back and added a further four points to their collection to strengthen their position at the top of the ladder.

Leading doubles combinations – Karly Leach and Deegan Kerslake 3 from 3 matches, Deegan Kerslake and Brenden Johnson 3, Karly Leach and Brenden Johnson 2, Nhat Dat and Leo Parker 2, Ryan Hensgen and Yen Hwak 2.

Players to perform well individually – Deegan Kerslake 6 wins from 6 matches, Karly Leach 5, Brenden Johnson 5, Nhat Dat 3, Leo Parker 3, Ryan Hensgen 3,Yen Hwak 3.

PENNANT FOUR:

The Doubles is an integral part of Table Tennis and can be the deciding factor when it comes down to it. Love or hate it, it brings your team together and brings different shots into your game, which is positive.

The Pennant four Doubles saw one Team totally taking control of the night. Tankard Dental’s, Leanne Wilson, Ildi Healy and Jakob Grzan played their matches to perfection. Although there were some close encounters, over the course of the competition, Tankard’s pairings lost one Match, giving them 8 of the 9 Rubbers, which is outstanding.

Weightman’s Packaging pushed forward to make second place, being the only Team to steal a Match from Tankard.

Glenn Leeson, Gary Leach and Eddie Parker, fought hard to leave with 5 Rubbers and just sneak in for Runner Up. Weightman’s and Mallee Meats, seemed to be on a level playing field, with all of their contests going to three sets.

Mallee Meats had a fill in, as their number one, Curtis Crabtree, couldn’t make it, so Tom Gilmour stepped in.

Nathan Beard and Connor Burnett joined Tom to give it their very best. It was when they came up against Weightman’s that each team were able to have a good tussle. As mentioned, all of the Matches were forced out to three sets, which made for some fantastic rallies. After a great effort from both teams, Mallee was pipped by one Rubber for second place.

Little old Dunkley Scales, couldn’t do much right, only being able to jostle out one Rubber over the course of the evening. Andrew filled in for Jake Hines, as number three, with Maria Starikov and Jen Leach making up the Team.

Dunkley put up a good show against third place Mallee, pushing two matches to three sets, but it wasn’t their night at all.

Some really enjoyed the process and others not so much, but over all it has given everyone more experience in Doubles.

Winner – Tankard Dental – 4 Points

Second – Weightman’s Packaging – 4 Points

Third – Mallee Meats – 0 Points.

Fourth – Dunkley Scales – 0 Points.
