Their match against Weightmans Packaging was a thriller and could have gone either way. The highlight of this match was the five set singles played by Wayne Carmichael against Arhuang Lau which was decided by two points in the fifth in Carmichael’s favour in a round where there were several outstanding matches.

– Regional Taxation Services 7 (Jackson Tung, Rohan Reimers, Lee Leeson 2) d Tankard Dental 4 (Shannon Bowen 3)

Ladder leaders Regional Taxation Services put together an excellent team performance against the talented Tankard Dental team. All the RTS players, Jackson Tung, Rohan Reimers and Lee Leeson won two singles each and they showed they will be a force this season. As well as the singles success Reimers and Tung combined to win the first doubles against the talented pair of Shannon Bowen and Reece Kurrle.

Despite the loss Tankards cannot be discounted given that Shannon Bowen won three singles again in this match and has only lost one singles in nine played this season.

The standout player for Regional Taxation Services in their victory was number three Lee Leeson. Her two victories included an excellent five set win over the hard-hitting Reece Kurrle coming back from a one – two game deficit. Leeson in the final match of the night proved too good for Jason Gifkins enabling her team to win 7-4 and retain top position on the ladder.

– Cookes Pools & Spas 7 (Kate Carmichael 3, Paul Kealley 2, Ashley Morrison 1) d Choices Flooring Mildura 4 (Thanh Nguyen 2, Jamie Kealley 1)

Cookes Pools & Spas continued their solid start to the season with a 7-4 victory over Choices Flooring Mildura, theirs was an even team performance with Kate Carmichael, Paul Kealley and Ashley Morrison winning three, two and one singles respectively. Carmichael was in good form winning each of her three singles in straight sets and she remains undefeated and clear by one from Shannon Bowen in the singles aggregate race.

The highlight match was the singles between father and son pair Paul Kealley versus his hard-hitting son, Jamie. Paul held a healthy lead in the first before Jamie fought back and almost stole the game before Paul steadied, Jamie took a nail biting second before Paul won the third, each game a scoreline of 12-10, in the fourth Paul broke away to take the match in what contained some amazing hard-hitting rallies. Another eye-catching contest was the five-set tussle won by Cookes number three Ashley Morrison 7-11 11-9 5-11 11-7 11-6 over Marcus Cimino, a good comeback by Morrison.

– Weightmans Packaging 6 (Wayne Carmichael 3, Mark Dorman 2) d Mallee Bearings 5 (Arhuang (Wong) Lau 2, Leon Brown, Russell Walder 1)

The remaining match was a thriller with Weightmans Packaging defeating the unlucky Mallee Bearings 6-5. The Bearings trio have now lost their three matches with the same scoreline. Early in this contest they took a narrow 4-3 lead only for their opponents to win two five set thrillers in succession.

For Weightmans Wayne Carmichael came in to the team for the first time this season after recovering from a knee injury and despite a lack of match play he proved to be a match winner. He was able to win three singles; his third match was the highlight of the round when he took to the table against the talented Arhuang Lau. Lau motored through the first only conceding one point and immediately Carmichael was under pressure. In a big turnaround Carmichael dominated the second and raced to a 10-4 lead in the third. In an amazing turnaround Lau then won this game 14-12 against the shellshocked veteran. Carmichael then proved what a talent he is by turning the match around to go on and take the fourth and fifth when he was under extreme pressure, 1-11 11-4 12-14 11-8 11-9, what a match by both players.

Carmichael’s teammate Mark Dorman offered good support winning two singles as he has done each round this season. The second doubles was crucial for Weightmans when Carmichael teamed up with Ed Hung to defeat Lau and Russell Walder 6-11 11-6 6-11 11-8 11-9 another five set thriller.

For Mallee Bearings Lau won two singles while Leon Brown and Walder won one each, they are not far from a win.

Mallee Meats 8 Michael Tan (3), Harry Gujral (2), Deegan Kerslake (1) defeated Sammy’s Slammers 3 Therese Fitzpatrick (1), James Jarvis (2), Ryan Hensgen (0).

Sammy’s Slammers captain Quentin Clark was absent in round 3, and his replacement Therese Fitzpatrick couldn’t do much to rally her teammates to victory. Going up against top team Mallee Meats the Sammys suffered another crushing 8-3 loss.

First out of the gate was Hensgen and Gujral, with the latter taking the win in four sets 11-3, 11-5, 9-11, 11-8. Fitzpatrick then won her only match for the night, defeating Kerslake in straight sets 13-11, 11-9, 11-8. Next, the formidable Tan downed Jarvis in three 12-10, 11-7, 11-4, as the two teams then went into the first doubles match. The Sammys tried to hold the line but Meats had them figured out, winning in straight sets 11-8, 13-11, 11-4.

It was shaping up to be a rough night for Fitzpatrick, who lost her next singles match, this time to Gujral 11-8, 11-4, 11-13. At 4 rubbers to 1, Meats were really applying the pressure. Hensgen made a valiant effort to topple Tan, winning the first two sets 11-7, 14-12, but he came unstuck in the last three, losing 8-11, 8-11, 8-11. The score now at 5-1, Jarvis took out Kerslake 11-3, 12-10, 11-8, as teammates Fitzpatrick and Hensgen paired up for the second doubles. They took the first set 11-7, Meats then struck back, taking the next two 14-12, 11-6, the Sammys levelled it in the fourth 11-8, but Meats vanquished them in the fifth, winning 11-7, and securing the night at 6 rubbers to 2.

Tan then secured his third singles win by defeating Fitzpatrick, 11-7, 11-9, 11-8, as teammate Gujral struggled and lost to Jarvis who took out two singles wins for the night, 11-7, 11-8, 7-11, 11-5. And in the last rubber, Kerslake obtained one singles win for the night, defeating Hensgen in four sets 11-9, 7-11, 13-11, 11-9.

Final score 8 rubbers to 3 and 25 games to 15.

Pinnacle Packers 9 Duy Truong (3), Peter Midgley (2), Steve Parker (2) defeated Weightmans Packaging 2 Rasin Bhuiyan (2), Andrew Jones (0), Michael Hensgen (0).

And if the previous Pennant 2 match wasn’t one-sided enough, Weightmans Packaging suffered a scathing 9-2 loss at the hands of Pinnacle Packers, with the only two rubbers Weightmans scored being won by captain Bhuiyan, who won two singles matches.

The first rubber saw veteran Andrew Jones take on Steve Parker in the night’s only four-set match. Parker took the first 11-3, Jones the second 11-9, and then Parker sailing over the finish line 11-6, 11-9. Truong comfortably dispatched Hensgen 11-4, 11-8, 11-3, whilst Bhuiyan took the first of his two rubbers for the night, defeating Midgley 11-8, 13-11, 13-11. Moving onto the first doubles which was the only five-setter of the evening. Truong and Midgley grabbed the first set 11-7, but Weightmans powered through and won the second and third 11-7, 11-6. They would have been confident going into the last two sets but they somehow let it slide as Packers got the upper hand and won 11-7, 11-4.

The next seven rubbers would all be three-setters and only one would be awarded to Weightmans as Packers racked them over the proverbial coals. Truong cooly took down Jones in three 11-6,11-5, 11-5, while Bhuiyan slowed the Packers death-train for a moment, defeating Parker 11-5, 11-3, 11-6. Next, Hensgen went down to Midgley 3-11, 4-11, 7-11, bringing the score to 5-2. Doubles match No. 2 saw Packers completely in control of Weightmans, winning 11-4, 11-9, 11-7, and securing the win for round 3 at 6 rubbers to 3.

At this point of the night, all the fight had gone out of Bhuiyan as he ceded his match to Truong 5-11, 2-11, 4-11.

Jones likewise lost to Midgley 5-11, 6-11, 6-11 and Hensgen granted Parker his second singles win, losing 8-11, 11-13, 7-11. This win will put Packers up into second place on the ladder while Weightmans, who are now even with Sammy’s Slammers on the number of losses, are in danger of dropping into last place. Hopefully they can pick themselves up as the season progresses.
