This round featured the clash of the two top teams Choices Flooring Mildura and Mallee Bearings. Both number one players Joel Thomas and Wayne Carmichael were undefeated in the singles aggregate however the unavailable Carmichael was replaced in the Choices lineup by Shannon Bowen.

– Choices Flooring Mildura 6 (Shannon Bowen, Leon Brown 2, Ed Hung 1) d Mallee Bearings 5 (Joel Thomas 3, Liam Wood 1)

Leon Brown and teammate Bowen defeated respective opponents Liam Wood and Daniel Jansen to give Choices a good start. Joel Thomas then as expected defeated Ed Hung. The all-important first doubles was an outstanding match and it was the Bearings duo of Thomas and Liam Wood who outlasted Shannon Bowen and Leon Brown to win 11-8 12-14 11-9 6-16 16-14 in a thriller. The scores now two rubbers all. The second block of three singles went as expected and now the second doubles was vital to both teams. Thomas and Jansen for Mallee Bearings won the first game against Bowen and Hung, this was a tight affair the whole way and in the end the Choices pair of Bowen and Hung prevailed in another doubles thriller 11-9 in the fifth.

Choices Flooring Mildura now took a 5-3 lead, Thomas arrested the position with a straight sets win over Shannon Bowen and then it was Liam Wood who defeated Ed Hung 11-9 in the fifth to level the match at five rubbers all.

Leon Brown then capped off a good night by winning his second singles 11-9 11-9 13-11 against the hardworking Daniel Jansen. Victory had come despite Joel Thomas winning his three singles for Mallee Bearings and remaining undefeated in 15 singles matches over the season. For the victors Shannon Bowen and Leon Brown won two singles while Ed Hung won one.

– Tankard Dental 7 (Reece Kurrle, Thanh Nguyen 2, Paul Kealley 1) d Cookes Pools & Spas 4 (Kate Carmichael 3, Casper McCarthy 1)

Tankard Dental extracted their third victory on the trot to move to second place on the ladder. Despite losing comfortably in his singles clash against opposing number one Kate Carmichael, Reece Kurrle enjoyed a successful night winning two singles as well as matching up with team mates Thanh Nguyenn and Paul Kealley to win both doubles.

Nguyen again won two singles while Kealley won one and came oh so close against Casper McCarthy. Kealley held five match points in the fifth set before McCarthy closed out the match 2-11 11-8 11-9 8-11 15-13.

For Cooke’s Kate Carmichael won three singles but the doubles was the issue.

– Regional Taxation Services 7 (Andrew Cannard, Rohan Reimers 2, Edi Re 1) d Weightmans Packaging 4 (Jackson Tung 3, Dylan Wood 1)

The highlight of this round was the first victory by Regional Taxation Services who were able to defeat Weightmans Packaging 7-4 in a solid team effort. For the victors Rohan Reimers continued his consistent season by winning two singles as did skipper Andrew Cannard who played a key role given that he also participated in both close five set doubles victories.

New player Edi Re also played his part defeating Lee Leeson in four sets and partnering Cannard in the important second doubles victory.

For Weightmans Jackson Tung won three singles and his match against Andrew Cannard was a highlight with many fine rallies. Tung won 9-11 11-7 11-9 7-11 11-7.

PENNANT FOUR:

Round five saw a very close match and a very one sided match. The two teams which were on top of the Ladder, were both defeated, which will hopefully see’s Pennant four becoming a closer battle throughout the season.

– Tankard Dental 9 (Koby Grace, Mark Ljubic 3, Conner Burnett 1) d Dunkley Scales 2 (Tom Gilmour, Deegan Kerslake 1)

Both teams needed fill in’s for this match, with Chitra Rankin covering for Selma Mayne, in Dunkley team and Koby Grace filling in for Ildi Healy and Mark Lubic playing left handed and covering for Nathan Beard.

Although there were a couple of five setters, the majority of the matches were settled in three sets and went convincingly the way of Tankard Dental.

The 2 number three’s had a really good contest, which went to five, with Connor Burnett (Tankard) winning the Rubber (11/6, 11/3, 10/12, 10/12, 11/9). Koby used his Pennant 3 skills to bring Tom Gilmour (Dunkley) down, in 4 sets (11/6, 11/9, 7/11, 14/12). Even though Mark was using his left hand, it didn’t seem to take away his ability to win, in his match with Deegan Kerslake (11/7, 11/4, 11/3).

Tom and Chitra gave it their all in the first Doubles, but couldn’t get over the line, with Koby and Conner marking up the fourth Rubber for Tankard (11/6, 3/11, 11/7, 7/11, 11/7).

The competition between Tom and Connor saw Dunkley clocking up their first Rubber (11/5, 11/7, 11/5). The lefty added another win to his list, against Dunkley’s Chitra (11/8, 11/3, 11/7). The first set was close in Deegan and Koby’s bout, but the match went Tankards way, in three (14/12, 11/8, 11/4). This match decided the nights winner, with Tankard hitting their sixth Rubber.

Koby and Mark made the second Doubles look easy, when they came up against Tom and Deegan (11/5, 13/11, 11/4).

Tom forced Mark to four sets, but couldn’t hold on for the win (11/5, 11/7, 6/11, 11/8). Connor put up a good fight against Deegan, with both having some tricky spin, but Deegan was determined to get another point for his team. It was a hard ask for Chitra to defeat Koby, with the match ending quickly and adding to the already huge score Tankard had amassed (11/6, 11/4, 11/5).

WINNERS : Tankard Dental  9 Dunkley Scales 2 … GAMES 27 to 12.

– Weightmans Packaging 6 (Curtis Crabtree 3, Gary Leach, Raj Gujral 1) d Mallee Meats 5 (Maria Starikov, Jenny Leach 2)

The first bracket of Singles started with the friendly Battle between Hubby and Wife, with Gary Leach (Weightman’s) and Jen Leach (Mallee) pushing each other to five sets. With Jen taking the first two (11/3, 14/12) and Gary the next two (both 11/7). Jen took control in the last (11/4) to grab the first Rubber.  Maria Starikov (Mallee) looked to be on top of Raj Gujral (Weightman’s) winning the first couple, but with the improvement to Raj’s game, he fought on to nab the third (12/10), but Maria was too strong and had a convincing last set (11/3). Weightman’s number one player, Curtis Crabtree was seeing the ball very well and made short work of Mallee’s Jake Hines (11/8, 11/2, 11/6).

It was a five set tussle in the first Doubles, with Maria and Jen, up against Curtis and Gary. All four played some amazing shots, but in the end Mallee marked up their third Rubber (11/9, 8/11, 3/11, 11/3,11/8).

Gary gave Maria a scare in their Singles match, snatching the first set (11/9), but Maria put up her defense system and ran away with it in the next three (11/7, 11/4, 11/7). This then put Mallee Meats in a good position to win the night (4 rubbers to 1). You should never count your chicken’s, as the saying goes, as Weightman’s were very determined to come away with the nights win and as you will see, they won the next five Rubbers to do just that.

Jen returned the favor when she faced Curtis, with a strong win in the first set (11/4), but that was the end of that run, when Curtis, brought out his fire power and stopped Jen’s run (11/9, 12/10, 11/9). The two number three’s were then put to the test, with Jake only able to sneak one set from Raj (11/5, 6/11, 11/6, 11/6).

Maria and Jake then took on Curtis and Raj, which went to four sets, landing Weightman’s another win (12/10, 8/11, 11/9, 11/3).

Curtis and Maria usually have a good match, but if Curtis is on his game, most times he comes out on top, as he did in this instance (11/7, 11/9, 11/0, 11/9) although Maria had him bluffed in the third set. Gary sealed the nights fate after a resounding win against Jake (11/3, 11/7, 11/6). Jen added another Rubber for Mallee, with her game against Raj, but it certainly wasn’t an easy win and was a little too late (11/7, 9/11, 4/11, 11/6, 11/9)

WINNER : Weightman’s Packaging 6 to Mallee Meats 5. GAMES : 25 to 19.
