Round 1

Table Tennis has returned to the Irymple Leisure Centre with round one of the new senior pennant taking place. A feature of the round was the closeness of the final scores with all matches decided by a 6-5 result.

Sunraysia’s leading player Joel Thomas , and exciting youngsters Dylan Wood and Casper McCarthy were making a return after a break while Daniel Jansen and Edi Re are making their debuts in pennant one.

They said that he would never don the Stta playing shirt – Here it is …. Edi Re making his debut for Regional Taxation Services. In a close contest, Re took out Liam Wood in a tight 5 setter and then was in a do or die clash in the 11th game decider against Daniel Jansen. Tied at 5 all Re took the first set but Daniel Jansen who debuted in P1 this Winter would not be denied taking out the final rubber 9-11, 11 – 9, 11 – 8, 11 – 7 to get Mallee Bearings over the line.

In a further close tussle Joel Thomas steered his team Mallee Bearings to a 6-5 win over the determined Regional Taxation Services . Thomas has returned successfully  to competition after a break winning three singles as well as teaming with Liam Wood and Daniel Jansen to taste success in both doubles.

With the scores locked at five rubbers all P1 debutants Jansen and RTS new player Edi Re took to the table to decide the four points. Earlier Re had been outstanding defeating the talented Liam Wood in an excellent five set scrap 10-12 13-11 10-12 11-7 15-13. Against Jansen he started strongly taking the first game before Jansen steadied to go on and win in a solid four set contest. The grading committee had recognised the excellent form of Jansen in the recently concluded pennant two competition and he showed why he deserved his promotion to pennant one. What a start to P1 by him.

The RTS team of Andrew Cannard , Rohan Reimers and Edi Re showed they could be a force as this pennant goes on.

The doubles rubbers were shared – the second doubles went to the Cookes Pools & Spas pairing of Michael Hensgen and Marcus Cimino. This was a five set win over Kealley and David Sergi (subbing for Therese Fitzpatrick).

Regional Taxation Services and Weightmans Packaging emerged victorious after round one play.

– Regional Taxation Services 7 (Peter Fitzpatrick, Sabrina Fitzpatrick, Sam Campbell 2) d Sammy’s Slammers 4 (James Jarvis 3)

The Regional Taxation Services trio of Peter Fitzpatrick, Sabrina Fitzpatrick and Sam Campbell each won two singles on their way to a seven rubbers to four victory against Sammy Slammers.

Regional Taxation Services also won the first doubles; husband and wife Peter and Sabrina Fitzpatrick accounting for James Jarvis and Nhat Dat in three sets.

But the rest of the night belonged pretty much to Sammy’s Slammers captain James Jarvis. Jarvis was undefeated in singles play, and with newcomer Hayden Wilson won the second doubles against Peter Fitzpatrick and Campbell in four sets.

The other stand-out match was the clash of the two number three’s – Regional Taxation’s Campbell and Sammy’s Slammers Wilson. These two played a great five setter in the final rubber of the night, giving encouragement to their respective captains for the season ahead.

Final scores: 7 rubbers to 4 and 25 games to 15.

– Weightmans Packaging 6 (Karly Leach 2, Ryan Peterson, Koby Grace 1) d Exposed Signage/Apparel 5 (Ryan Hensgen 3, Nick Kiapekos 2).

Exposed Signage & Apparel had to rely on wins in the doubles to get home in this match against Weightmans Packaging.

Ryan Hensgen (subbing for Marita Grace) dominated singles play, picking up- three wins for his side, Exposed Signage & Apparel.

His number two Nick Kiapekos played well to win two rubbers, but that is where the winning ended for Exposed Signage & Apparel.

Weightmans Packaging captain Ryan Peterson could only win one singles rubber, as did his number three Koby Grace, whilst his number two Karly Leach kept the side in the game with two good wins. However that gave them only four of the nine singles rubbers, and thanks to some good play in the doubles rubbers, they won off the back to two four set victories – Peterson and Leach downing Hensgen and Kiapekos, then Peterson and Grace doing the same to Hensgen and Wendy Simpson.

Final scores: 6 rubbers to 5 and 22 games to 20.

Well, how good is it to have the Season up and running. Summer doesn’t seem to want to leave us, which has been pretty uncomfortable at times. Everyone seemed to get through the first night, but be ready for another doozy next week. Take care and Drink plenty of Water.

Pennant four once again has 4 teams this year and this week there was only one of those who didn’t need a fill in.

– Dunkley Scales 7 (Tom Gilmour, Deegan Kerslake 2, Glenn Leeson 1) d Weightmans Packaging (Curtis Crabtree 3, Gary Leach 1)

The team of Dunkley Scales is : Tom Gilmore, Deegan Kerslake and Selma Mayne (Fill in for Selma was Glenn Leeson, who had to play Left handed and did a very good job of it.  Weightmans Packaging’s Team is : Curtis Crabtree, Gary Leach and Raj Gujral.

The first Rubber was between Tom and Curtis, with their first set going to an amazing 21 / 19 in Curtis’s favor, which helped Curtis also grabbed the Rubber Win after three sets (21/19, 13/11, 11/8). Deegan then took on Gary and was a little too strong, giving Dunkley a win (11/8, 11/8, 11/3). The final match in this singles set saw Glenn take this one in three, against one of our new players, in Raj (11/6, 11/7, 11/3).

The first Doubles was a clear win to Dunkley with the combination of Tom and Deegan up against Curtis and Gary (11/6, 11/9, 11/3).

Deegan put up a good fight against Curtis, in a five setter, with the points going to Weightman’s (9/11, 11/5, 11/4, 7/11, 11/9). Tom added another win for Dunkley, with his game against Raj (11/2, 11/7, 11/7). Gary Leach marked up his first win against Glenn (11/8, 11/3, 11/7) , which put Dunkley one in front with four matches to come.

Tom and Glenn played well, to snatch another win in the Doubles (11/6, 12/10, 11/5).

Although Raj didn’t collect a win on the night, he has a solid game and will improve with every week. He came up against Deegan in this match, who had a three set win (11/7, 117, 11/5). This gave Dunkley Scales the win.

The two remaining matches saw Glenn being beaten by Curtis (11/5, 9/11, 11/5, 11/9). Gary gave it a good shot against Tom in the last but failed to gain a win (11/9, 11/8, 11/9).

WINNERS : Dunkley Scales – 7 to Weightman’s Packaging 4. Games 25 to 11.

The other Match being played was between Mallee Meats : Maria Starikov, Jen Leach and Jake Hines (fill in was Chetty Bonaccorso) and Tankard Dental : Ashley Gillespie, Ildi Healy and Conner Burnett (Nathan Beard was the fill in).

– Mallee Meats 7 (Maria Starikov, Jenny Leach 2, Cetty Bonaccorso 1) d Tankard Dental 4 (Ildi Healy, Nathan Beard 2)

In the Singles set, Jen battled out a close five setter against Ildi in the first match and penned in a win for Mallee (11/8, 8/11, 11/5, 12/14, 11/7). As usual when Maria and Nathan face one another, there are a lot of Rallies and this is exactly what the case was in this five setter. Maria came away with the win in an excellent match (12/10, 12/14, 8/11, 11/9, 11/4). Connor played his first competition game and showed he has a strong game, which will do well for him as the season goes on. He was beaten by Cetty, who played very well and has added a lot to her game (11/5, 11/5, 11/7).

Maria and Jen were pushed to four sets by Ildi and Nathan, but were able to mark up Mallee’s fourth Rubber win. (11/6, 5/11, 13/11, 11/8).

Ildi and Maria played a great game, with Ildi coming home in four sets to give Tankard their first Rubber. (11/7, 11/8, 4/11, 11/3). Conner gave Jen a scare, with his tricky serve, but Jen secured the win in three (11/8, 11/9, 11/8). The game between Cetty and Nathan was a beauty, with many rallies, which in the finish was won by Nathan (11/7, 12/10, 8/11, 11/6, 11/5).

Maria and Cetty put together a winning game, when they came up against Ilki and Conner, in the Doubles (11/5, 11/4, 11/4). This win gave Mallee Meats the win.

The last Singles bracket started with a comfortable win for Maria over Connor (11/6, 11/5, 11/3). Cetty gave it her best, but Ildi played the better and added a rubber to Tankards (11/8, 11/5, 11/7). Nathan is never easy to beat and Jen was reminded of that fact after their game, which was a comfortable win for him (11/6, 11/9, 11/5).
