GAVIN and Wayne Carmichael share brotherly love, but that’s likely to dissipate when they’re at opposite ends of the table on Wednesday.

The siblings will captain their respective sides in the Sunraysia Table Tennis Pennant One winter grand final, which is expected to be a tough encounter.

Gavin’s Mallee Bearings side, which includes Mark Dorman and Rohan Reimers got the better of Wayne’s Tankard Dental in the qualifying final, but their skipper won’t take the result for granted.

Wayne and teammates Jackson Murphy and Paul Kealley however, have some confidence after their preliminary final win over Regional Taxation Services, including a victory for the skipper over aggregate champion Matt Ljubic.

“We’re feeling good, but Gav, Mark and Rohan got the job done against us a couple of weeks ago,” Wayne said.

“Jackson is playing extremely well this season and I think has gone to the next level, hopefully, he can get one over either Gav or Mark.

“It’s Paul’s first season in Pennant One but he has really improved as the season has gone on. As an ex-tennis player, he’s got some really good transferable skills and he’s a really reliable and consistent player.”

Wayne, a 13-time champion with over 20 singles aggregate titles to his name, is also weary of his brother’s exploits this campaign.

“Gav is a bit of a bulldog in that he’s always at you and you have to work hard against him,” he said.

“He’s happy to take his time and let you make the mistake which can make him hard to play against and he’s beaten just about everyone this year, probably one of his best seasons.”

Experienced campaigner Dorman proved to be the match-winner for Bearings in their semi-final victory, and Gavin Carmichael is backing his teammates in.

“Rohan has come up from Pennant Two this year and had some really good wins, and Mark has been a good player in this competition for a long time,” he said.

“Wayne has turned the clock back a bit this year and has been the danger man again, while Jackson can hit the ball really hard and can definitely cause some problems.

“I’ve beaten him (Wayne) once in finals. We managed to get the win over them in the second semi-final, but they also beat us the previous match before us so we believe it’s going to be close.”

The Sunraysia Table Tennis Association grand finals take place from 7.15pm on Wednesday at the Irymple Leisure Centre.
