PENNANT ONE
Close matches were the feature of round five table tennis action as all three pennant one matches of the Sunraysia Table Tennis summer competition were decided by a 6-5 result. Unfortunately this round also featured eighteen players being unavailable over all grades causing a couple of matches in pennant three to be two versus two and a couple of players also needed to double up for two teams.
SUNRAYSIA DAILY vs. FISHERS IGA
In pennant one ladder leaders Sunraysia Daily were under pressure most of the night but were able to win two close five set singles matches in the last round of three singles courtesy of skipper Mark Dorman and team mate Sam Foreman enabling the Daily team to snatch a 6-5 win over fourth placed Fishers IGA. In both of these singles Fishers skipper Gavin Carmichael held a match point against Dorman in the fourth game while at five rubbers all Peter Bishop held a match point in the fifth against Sam Foreman indicating how close the match was.
Mark Dorman was the standout player winning three singles including an impressive 6-11 11-7 10-12 13-11 11-8 win against Gavin Carmichael when under pressure. He also teamed with Graeme O’Neill to win the second doubles over Carmichael and Peter Bishop which in the end result was another important win. The Daily combination is taking all before them at present and their clash this week against the Dillon Chambers led Max Miller Carpets will be a highlight.
MAX MILLER CARPETS vs. MALLEE BEARINGS
The Carpeters this round played well to score a 6-5 victory over Mallee Bearings. Again Dillon Chambers was in excellent form winning his three singles and taking part in both doubles. Each week he seems to be taking his game to a new level and that’s not good news for his opponents. His three set victory 11-9 11-7 11-9 over Wayne Carmichael was a good battle however it was difficult for Carmichael to counter the aggressive top spin Chambers imparts on the ball at every opportunity.
The first doubles was a critical result in the outcome with Chambers and team mate Gavin Minter outlasting experienced combination of Carmichael and Ed Hung 11-9 7-11 11-6 8-11 11-8 in a close encounter. With the match at five all Carpeter’s Daniel Jansen remained calm under pressure to take the final singles in three sets and give his team their third win from five starts while the unlucky Mallee Bearings remain winless from five starts despite being close to victories in many of these matches.
WEIGHTMAN’S PACKAGING vs. PINNACLE PACKERS
In the remaining pennant one match second placed Pinnacle Packers bounced back from a massive defeat last round to win 6-5 over Weightmans Packaging. Mark Ljubic filling in for the Packers proved to be the difference in this match by winning three singles. In particular his five set victory against the exciting Joel Dorman was a highlight as he had to recover from a two game deficit to win 8-11 10-12 11-9 11-8 11-5 a great contest between two players who possess some brilliant unorthodox shots of their own.
The doubles were a real key in the result with the Packers winning both capping off a really successful night for Mark Ljubic. He teamed up with Kevin Johns in the first to defeat Andrew Cannard and Joel Dorman to win in a lengthy five setter 11-3 9-11 11-4 9-11 11-2 in a mixed result of one sided and close games. Weightmans fought back late in the match to make the score more respectable courtesy of Lee Thomas for the second round in succession finishing strongly to score a creditable five set victory this time at the expense of Kevin Johns. This was a marathon with Thomas in warm conditions prevailing 9-11 13-11 6-11 11-9 11-9.
With this victory the Packers hold on to equal first on the ladder sitting behind Sunraysia Daily by percentage and one win clear of third while Weightmans remain in fifth spot out of the four only by percentage and this week play fourth placed Fishers in an important match for both teams.
PENNANT TWO
MALLEE BEARINGS vs. TANKARD DENTAL
Ladder leaders Tankard Dental maintained their undefeated run with an 8-3 victory over Mallee Bearings. In a strong display skipper Sony Sefer won three singles while team mates Abraham McDonnell and Henry Hornsby won two singles each. Included in Hornsby’s wins was a tremendous five set victory over the experienced Seval Fuat when two games to love down. Hornsby recovered well to win 7-11 6-11 11-4 11-1 11-7. Hornsby was unlucky not to win three singles just going down to Matt Burns 10-12 in the fifth in an excellent struggle between two young players who are in form.
Burns was the shining light for Mallee Bearings winning two singles and partnering skipper Seval Fuat in the first doubles to a straight sets victory over Sefer and McDonnell.
Tankard Dental are the only team in any of the pennants to remain undefeated and they have now recorded victory against every team in the pennant as we now enter the second round of matches. Five rounds are to be played with a final series over two weeks.
PINNACLE PACKERS vs. SPANLINE
Spanline’s Nick Barlow was in superb form in this match winning three singles. He also teamed up with skipper Arnold Jago in the first doubles to record a 9-11 5-11 11-6 11-8 11-9 in what was a vital result. This doubles victory amazingly gave Spanline a four nil lead and the match looked under control however this was not the case at all as Pinnacle Packers proceeded win the next five of six matches to level at five rubbers all.
The Packers commenced their comeback when Arthur Paar defeated opposing skipper Arnold Jago and then Leon Brown fought out a marathon with Mark Kerr filling in from pennant three. Brown prevailed in a tremendous struggle 11-7 11-8 9-11 7-11 12-10. Nick Barlow then defeated David Balshaw in straight sets to take Spanline to a 5-2 lead. Balshaw and his skipper Paar then between them won the next three matches, their doubles and a singles each to fight back to five rubbers all. This had been an excellent fight back however it had taken its toll on Brown who was injured in his five set marathon against Kerr.
Unfortunately with the scores at five rubbers all Brown could not take to the table handing the match to Nick Barlow and giving Spanline success despite the spirited comeback by the Packers.
MAX MILLER CARPETS vs. FISHERS IGA
Fishers recorded a 7-4 victory over Max Miller Carpets which enable them to occupy third place on the ladder. Jackson Murphy continues to improve his game from week to week and he was in great touch in this match winning three singles. He was under extreme pressure from the experienced Andrew Jones and at one stage trailed one game to two before going on to win in five sets 11-5 6-11 7-11 11-8 11-6. Murphy was promoted to pennant two on the back of winning the singles aggregate in pennant three in the recent winter pennant. His form at this level has been so good over the first five rounds that he only sits one win behind Arthur Paar in the singles aggregate race.
Apart from Murphy, fill in Trevor Gebert won two singles while Robert Chiswell won one singles. There were two five set matches in this result and both were won by Fishers. Had they gone the other way victory would have gone to the Carpeters who are still chasing their first victory.
PENNANT THREE
For the second week in a row, there were many players absent, mainly caused by the Fitzpatrick’s being on holiday (that accounted for five players). On top of that a further four players were missing for various reasons. Full marks to the Max Miller Carpets trio of Karina Sullivan, Gary Hughes and Damen Southgate for having fielded their nominated side in each round so far!! Due to this absenteeism, two matches were played between only two players on each side.
FISHERS IGA vs. SUNRAYSIA DAILY
This match was one of the two which could only field two players per side. Nicholas Dorman and George Papanicolaou fronted for Fishers and two of the three regular Sunraysia Daily players Mark Kerr and Karly Leach were on hand for the Dailies. Both George Papanicolaou and Mark Kerr doubled up on the night, George also playing in the Mallee Bearings – Max Millers game (see below), and Mark again filling in in Pennant Two.
The first match of the night produced somewhat of an upset, when aggregate leader Mark Kerr was toppled by Nicholas Dorman in four sets. Kerr took the first 11-9, but then Dorman came back determinedly and strongly to take the second 11-9. Neither player let up in intensity during the third set before Dorman prevailed to take it 14-12. The fourth set was the same again, the players going point for point, only for Dorman to get a break and take the set 11-9, and the match.
Following this match Karly Leach had a confidence boosting win over George Papanicolaou. Karly is known for her dogged and determined play, and George is one of the big-hitting juniors of the Association. Papanicolaou took the first two sets 11-9, 11-7, and perhaps at that point he may have thought that the result was simply a matter of playing the third set. If he thought that, then he has never played Karly before. She took the next two sets 11-3, 11-6 to put herself right back in the match. The fifth set was a tense affair, George playing his customary big-hitting game and Karly hanging around for little mistakes and opportunities to get her back in. At the end, Karly’s strategy paid off, as she took the set 11-9.
Next up was the doubles, an entertaining affair which went to five sets. Each pair made errors where winners could have eventuated, and the scores reflect that. Neither pair could get the ascendency during the match and it went a set about up to two sets all, Fishers having won the first and third the Dailies second and fourth and the score was 11-8, 8-11, 11-7, 9-11. Fishers made a few too many errors in the fifth and went down 11-6.
In the second round of singles Nicholas Dorman was much too strong for Karly Leach and he defeated her in straight sets 11-7, 11-8, 11-8. That set the match up for a decider, the scores being level at two rubbers all. Mark Kerr took the first two sets in the decider against George Papanicolaou 11-4, 11-9 through his even and consistent play. George found some form in the third set though, and hung on to take it 12-10. Kerr was too consistent in the end though, and took the fourth 11-7. That gave the match to the Dailies three rubbers to two in what had been an entertaining night.
MALLEE BEARINGS vs. MAX MILLER CARPETS
Max Millers took this match, eight rubbers to three. This is due no doubt in part to their settled line-up, all players having played each week of this competition. Mallee Bearings had two players filling in to assist Delaney Murphy, and whilst they put up a good fight, Max Millers always had the upper hand, and went on to win fairly easily. Karina Sullivan and Gary Hughes got their side off to a good start with four set wins against Callan Humphreys and George Papanicolaou respectively. Damon Southgate then confronted Delaney Murphy but was soundly beaten by the confident hard-hitting youngster in three sets 11-9, 11-2, 11-2. George and Callan put up a good fight in the first two sets of the first doubles against Karina and Gary going down 7-11, 10-12, but then ran out of steam to gift the third set 1-11. The second round of singles all went Max Millers way, and only one went beyond three sets. George going down to Karina 9-11, 8-11, 10-12, Gary accounted for Delaney 12-10, 11-6, 12-10 and Damen having to work a little harder to defeat Callan 11-4, 6-11, 11-9, 11-7. At that stage the match was well and truly decided, Max Millers having won seven of the eight rubbers played. Despite that, the second doubles was a really good match, George and Delaney combining well to give Karina and Damon a run for their money. After three sets they were leading 9-11, 14-12, 12-10 but Karina and Damon then got their act together and took the final sets 11-8, 11-5. George and Delaney were not yet finished with Damon and Karina though, as they had to play them in the final round of the singles, and in both matches they came out on top; George finally getting a win for the night against Damon 11-7, 11-4, 3-11, 11-8, and Delaney getting her second by accounting for Karina 6-11, 13-11, 11-6, 11-8 and these two wins put some respectability into the score for Mallee Bearings, now giving them three wins in the match. Callan Humphries tried his hardest to make that four wins, and after taking the first set against Gary Hughes in the final match 11-8, narrowly lost in five; Hughes prevailing in the final four sets 11-9, 11-5, 9-11, 11-9. For the victors, Gary Hughes won everything he played (obviously no Birthday Cake this week!!), Karina won two singles and Damon won one. Max Millers also won both the doubles. Delaney’s two singles wins and George’s victory over Damon Southgate gave Mallee Bearings their three rubbers.
PINNACLE PACKERS vs. WEIGHTMANS PACKAGING
This match, like the first in this pennant could also only field two players a side – none of the regular Pinnacle Packers were available, Andrew Cottrell and son Harrison filling in there, and Weightmans Packaging represented by regulars Andrew Lewis and Jeremy Corrin, and despite not playing regularly, the Pinnacle Packers two fill-in’s took the honours on the night. For the losers, Andrew Lewis was in good form, winning both singles (against Harrison Cottrell a three set victory 11-6, 11-8, 11-9, and then against Harrison’s father Andrew a very spirited win in five 7-11, 11-8, 11-8, 3-11, 11-3), then doing all he could to get his team over the line in the doubles, but going down in five with teammate Jeremy Corrin 6-11, 11-8, 8-11, 11-1, 7-11. Andrew and Harrison, then, took a win apiece against Jeremy Corrin; Andrew, after being down two sets to nil, came back to win in five 9-11, 8-11 11-6, 11-5, 11-9, a match that certainly got away from Jeremy. Harrison accounted for Jeremy in a much more economical three sets 12-10, 11-5, 11-9. A disappointing night for the Weightmans Packaging side, in a match that could have been theirs, but it goes to show that there are a lot of good table tennis players out there in Sunraysia who do not play in this competition regularly.
PENNANT FOUR
MAX MILLER CARPETS vs. BISHOP BUILDERS
Despite having two regular players out Bishop Builders proved too consistent for Max Miller Carpets in a match that had some excellent individual duals. Victory came for the Builders despite Sam Hensgen playing very well to win three singles. His match against Leonie Dunkley was a highlight and went to five close sets with Sam winning 5-11 12-10 11-8 9-11 11-9. Dunkley won two singles for her team as did fill in Matthew Ljubic who was impressive. He defeated Gabriel McDonnell in straight sets and then outlasted Shane Koelmeyer 8-11 11-5 9-11 11-6 11-6 in a great struggle. Against Sam Hensgen young Ljubic almost won his third when he took a two games to one lead before Sam steadied in another close five set contest to win 11-8 7-11 5-11 11-9 11-6.
In total five five set matches took place and with a little more luck the Carpeters could have been in with a chance. Victory in both doubles was also a key factor for the winning team – Bishop Builders.
FISHERS IGA vs. MALLEE BEARINGS
Mallee Bearings with both Ryan Hensgen and Lachlan Kelly winning three singles each proved too steady for Fishers IGA winning 6-5 despite Fishers holding a 5-4 lead with two rubbers to be played.
This match went right down to the wire and at five all Lachlan Kelly had to with stand a tremendous challenge from fill in Daniel Longo before narrowly grabbing an 11-2 5-11 11-9 8-11 11-9 victory to give his team their second win of the season. In the second last singles of the night another five setter took place when Ryan Hensgen, knowing a loss would finish his team, played well to defeat Shirley Whitecross 11-8 6-11 11-1 5-11 11-6. This was a game effort by Shirley against a player who is in good form. After a steady start Ryan is in top form winning three singles in each of the past two rounds.
Victory came for Mallee Bearings courtesy of two players winning three singles and the doubles is probably the area they need to work on as they were unable to gain a win in either of these.
Fishers will have Mick Bacon back this week after he missed this round to go to Melbourne to attend a Meatloaf concert. Fishers sit second on the ladder with three wins out of five which ain’t bad. With Mick away and Lachlan Kelly winning three singles Lachlan has moved two wins clear of Mick in the singles aggregate race.
