– Weightmans Packaging 6 (Andrew Cannard 2, Kevin Johns, Bernadette Fitzpatrick 1) d Bishop Builders 5 (Mark Ljubic 3, Michael Hogarth, Peter Bishop 1)
Despite only winning four of the nine singles matches Weightmans Packaging continued their undefeated run winning 6-5 against Bishop Builders in a thriller on the grand stand court. Fourteen year old Bernadette Fitzpatrick continued her dream start in pennant one when she was able to account for the experienced campaigner Peter Bishop 11-5 11-2 9-11 11-6 when the scores were locked at five rubbers all. Fitzpatrick showed great nerve for a player of such young age. Earlier in the second doubles she combined with skipper Andrew Cannard to defeat the tough combination of Mark Ljubic and Peter Bishop 13-11 12-10 8-11 5-11 11-8 an important victory given the closeness of the result. For the Builders skipper Ljubic was in good singles form winning three.
– Max Miller Carpets 7 (Mark Dorman, Geoff Wright 2, Arthur Paar 1) d Fishers IGA 4 (Wayne Carmichael 3, Ashley Morrison 1)
With Geoff Wright in good form winning two singles Max Miller Carpets recorded their first victory of the season downing Fishers IGA 7-4 on centre court. Wright defeated Ash Morrison in a close four set tussle and Ross Humphreys in straight sets in his best performance at this level. He also partnered Mark Dorman to defeat Wayne Carmichael and Ash Morrison 8-11 11-7 17-15 11-13 11-8 in the first doubles, a crucial result in the context of the match. Victory came for the Carpeters despite Wayne Carmichael winning his customary three singles.

In the remaining match on the stage court Pinnacle Packers were out of the blocks early to take a 4-1 lead against Mallee Bearings. Nicholas Dorman for the Packers scored an important win in the first match of the night against last round hero Jackson Tung winning 12-10 11-3 9-11 11-3. The first doubles was a beauty and could have gone either way however it was Packers pair Gavin Carmichael and Sony Sefer who survived over Ali Taheri and Jackson Tung 11-3 10-12 8-11 12-10 11-8 after being almost down and out in the fourth. With Carmichael winning his third singles in the first of the last block of singles the Packers took a 6-3 lead before the Mallee Bearings combination improved the score line winning the last two singles. Included in these wins was a victory by Matt Ljubic over Nicholas Dorman in the battle of the young guns.
PENNANT TWO:
After the two week school holiday break, teams returned refreshed for Round Three, and three close scores was the result.
– Spanline 7 (Tony Malycha, Leon Brown 2, Cole Keegan 1) d Fishers IGA 4 (Ed Hung 3, Karly Leach 1)
Spanline recorded their third win for the season when defeating Ed Hung’s Fishers IGA team.
Spanline, captained by Leon Brown, were never in trouble, and had the match won at the conclusion of the second doubles.
Although Hung took three singles wins, the all round performance of Brown, Cole Keegan and Tony Malycha was the difference.
Brown, and his number three Malycha took two wins apiece; Cole Keegan had a quiet night, picking up just one win. Significantly, Spanline took both doubles contests – Brown and Malycha downing Hung and Karly Leach in four, and later Brown and Keegan getting the better of Hung and Michael Hensgen in a fighting five set contest, after they were two sets to love down.
Final scores: 7 rubbers to 4 and 23 games to 17.
– Mallee Bearings 6 (George Papanicolaou 2, Peter Fitzpatrick, Geoff Peters 1) d Weightmans Packaging 5 (Lachlan Kelly 3, Terry Martin 2)
Weightmans Packaging were without captain Lee Thomas for this round 3 match – Lee was ably replaced by Terry Martin, returning to the game (and the district) after an absence of about twenty years.
The stand-out performance, though, in this match was that of Weightmans Packaging number two, Lachlan Kelly. Kelly swept the board in his singles matches, brushing aside Peter Fitzpatrick in three sets, and defeating both George Papanicolaou and Geoff Peters in four.
Martin contributed two singles wins, and had Weightmans been able to snare one of the doubles contests, they would have had the match in the bag.
George Papanicolaou it was, however, to held Mallee Bearings together. George took two singles wins, downing Martin in four sets after dropping the first, and later defeating Mick Bacon in three. Papanicolaou played the anchor role in both doubles, pairing with Fitzpatrick to down Martin and Kelly in four sets, and later with Geoff Peters to dispose of Martin and Bacon in just three.
With all that going on, the match came down to the final rubber for decision. The two number threes Geoff Peters and Mick Bacon played an even match, with the unorthodox Peters taking the win in four sets.
Final scores: 6 rubbers to 5 and 20 games to 18.
– Max Miller Carpets 6 (Seval Fuat 3, Glen Bell 2) d Tankard Dental 5 (Arnold Jago 2, Claire Ljubic, Jessica Dorman 1)
Max Millers had to come from 5 rubbers to 4 behind to snatch this match from Tankard Dental.
Ekin Askoi filled in for Max Miller’s number two Sabrina Fitzpatrick, and acquitted himself particularly well. Although he failed to win a singles rubber, Askoi took both Jessica Dorman and Claire Ljubic to five sets. In the doubles he proved his worth; playing with captain Seval Fuat, he defeated Ljubic and Arnold Jago in five sets.
Seval Fuat was in fine form, winning all his singles rubbers in a minimum of three sets, importantly the last one, which was the decider, against opposing number one, Arnold Jago. Fuat comprehensively outplayed Jago, winning 3, 5 and 5.
Fuat was ably backed up by number three Glen Bell, who is improving every week, and is now playing more like a number two. Bell easily defeated Ljubic and Dorman in three sets, but had to settle for a four set loss to Jago.
For Tankard’s, Jago took two singles rubbers, and Dorman and Ljubic one each. Added to that was the first doubles – Jago and Dorman played particularly well to defeat Fuat and Bell in five sets, after being two sets down 7-11, 8-11, they fought back to win the last three 11-8, 11-7, 12-10.
Final scores: 6 rubbers to 5 and 22 games to 20.
PENNANT THREE:
After a two week break, table tennis resumed in Pennant Three, but the scores in this round were all one-sided: all scores going to the winners 9 rubbers to 2.
– Dunkley Scales 9 (Muhkwinder Muhkwinder, Leonie Dunkley 3, Jeff Hards 1) d Bishop Builders 2 (Kalif Shortt, Mustafa Rezai 1)
In a very one sided match, Dunkley Scales defeated Bishop Builders 9 rubbers to 2.
Only two rubbers went beyond three sets, and they were decided in four.
Both Leonie Dunkley and her number three Muhkwinder Muhkwinder took three singles wins, and Jeff Hards contributed one, when he defeated Demi Green.
Both doubles rubbers were decided in three, Dunkley and Hards defeating Kalif Shortt and Green 4, 5 and 2, and later Dunkley and Muhkwinder defeating Shortt and fill-in Mustafa Rezay, also in three but meeting much sterner opposition. The scores here 17-15, 11-8, 11-7.
Both Shortt and Mustafa defeated Jeff Hards to give their side their two rubbers.
Final scores: 9 rubbers to 2 and 27 games to 8.
– Weightmans Packaging 9 (Winston Easterbrook, Matt Avers, Rachel Fitzpatrick 3) d Mallee Bearings 2
In a curious twist, Weightmans Packaging defeated Mallee Bearings by winning all their singles contests, but just to show what a different game doubles is, they could not combine in either of the doubles, losing both.
For Weightmans, Winston Easterbrook had a great night, winning all his singles in three sets, his grandson Matt Avers took two of his in three sets, the other in five, and Rachel Fitzpatrick completing the trifecta, taking one in three sets and the other two in four.
Jai Green was the best performed player for Mallee Bearings – he helped his team-mates to victories in both doubles: he and Ben Hosking played in the best match of the contest, downing Matt Avers and Winston Easterbrook in a high scoring see-sawing match. Green and Hosking hung on to win 12-10, 11-13, 11-8, 10-12, 11-7.
Green later backed up his earlier doubles performance when he and Quentin Clarke defeated Avers and Fitzpatrick in straight sets, 12-10, 11-6, 11-3.
Final scores: 9 rubbers to 2 and 26 games to 13.
– Sunny Daily 9 (Peter Edwards 3, Mohammad Karam, Tom Douglas 2) d Ali Mohammad, Jol Peters 1)
Sunny Daily easily defeated Max Miller Carpets in this round 3 contest, taking all before them until the ninth and tenth rubbers, which they lost, but then taking the final rubber to finish their opponents off.
Sunny Daily captain Peter Edwards played a captains game, winning all his singles, and helping his team-mates to wins in both doubles. Edwards did not simply cruise through his matches by any means, all his singles wins were in four sets, and the first doubles took five.
His team-mates Tom Douglas and Mohammad Karam took two singles wins – Douglas against Paul Fitzpatrick in straight sets and a hard fought five set contest against Jol Peters 11-9, 7-11, 9-11, 12-10, 11-9. Karam accounted for Ali Mohammad in four sets, and Paul Fitzpatrick in three.
Only Jol Peters and Ali Mohammad could help the Max Millers cause. Peters defeated Karam in four sets, and Mohammad had the better of Tom Douglas, winning that one in three.
Final scores: 9 rubbers to 2 and 28 games to 14.
PENNANT FOUR:

Sunny Daily continued on their undefeated way in round three matches in pennant four. With Angela Pryor in excellent form winning three singles the Daily combination defeated Max Miller Carpets 7-4. Young Pryor in her first full season of table tennis showed the benefit of her Monday night training sessions. Her first match of the night was against her dad Wayne, which she won in four sets and then later she accounted for Therese Fitzpatrick 8-11 14-12 11-6 11-8 in an entertaining match.
