PENNANT ONE:
After five losses in succession, Fishers IGA have recorded their second win in round seven matches of the Sunraysia Table Tennis Summer pennant. This 6-5 victory over Weightmans Packaging will still leave Fishers at the bottom of the ladder however given the evenness of the competition they are now only one game away from the top four with three rounds to be played.
– Fishers IGA 6 (Wayne Carmichael 3, Ross Humphreys, Ashley Morrison 1) d Weightmans Packaging 5 (Andrew Cannard 2, Kevin Johns, Bernadette Fitzpatrick 1)
After a flying start to the season Weightmans have now lost four matches on the trot. They were not far away in this match however two key singles went the way of Fishers. The very first match of the night the stage court featured Ash Morrison for Fishers defeating Kevin Johns in a four set struggle. After dropping the first game 6-11, Morrison played steady table tennis to out point his more experienced opponent 11-9 12-10 13-11 in a very tight match. The other crucial result was the straight sets defeat of leading youngster Bernadette Fitzpatrick by the hardworking Ross Humphreys 11-4 11-9 11-9 a big win by Humphreys and a match which took his team to a 5-2 lead. Fishers skipper Wayne Carmichael again won three singles and he remains undefeated in twenty one matches. Whilst it may be a struggle for Fishers to play finals table tennis any side with Carmichael at the helm cannot be discounted.
– Pinnacle Packers 7 (Gavin Carmichael, Nicholas Dorman, Sony Sefer 2) d Max Miller Carpets 4 (Mark Dorman 3)
Top team Pinnacle Packers recorded their sixth win in succession when they defeated in form team Max Miller Carpets on the grandstand court. After a quiet start to the season the Carpeters had won three of their last four matches coming into this round and despite their skipper Mark Dorman winning three singles including an 11-9 in the fifth victory over opposing Captain Gavin Carmichael, it was the Packers who proved too steady winning 7-4. Packers number three, Sony Sefer proved to be the difference in the battle of first and second on the ladder. With the match at three rubbers all Sefer outlasted Arthur Paar 12-10 10-12 11-4 7-11 13-11 and then he partnered Gavin Carmichael in the second doubles to account for Paar and Mark Dorman in straight sets. Later Sefer finished a good night by defeating Geoff Wright in four sets. Sefer’s team mate Nicholas Dorman continued his good form from the previous week by again winning two singles to also play a key role in the Packers victory.
– Bishop Builders 6 (Mark Ljubic 3, Michael Hogarth, Peter Bishop 1) d Mallee Bearings 5 (Darren Robinson, Matt Ljubic 2)
Bishop Builders moved to second position on the ladder with a 6-5 victory over Mallee Bearings who were without two of their regular players. The Builders were well lead by skipper Mark Ljubic who won three singles for the third time this season. Early in the match, on centre court, Bishop Builders took a four rubbers to one lead before Mallee Bearings fought back to level at four rubbers all. Mark Ljubic for the Builders then accounted for Darren Robinson in straight sets while team mate Michael Hogarth then outlasted fill in Shane Carmichael in a lengthy five setter 17-15 11-6 6-11 5-11 11-6 to give his team the points. Peter Bishop also contributed to the victory with an important singles victory over Carmichael in the first game of the night as well as pairing with skipper Ljubic in the first doubles for another important win given the closeness of the result.
PENNANT TWO:
Mallee Bearings lost their first match for the season, and also top spot on the ladder. Spanline, with a better percentage, took their sixth win, this time against Tankard Dental to reclaim the head of the table.

With the scores at 2 rubbers all after the first doubles rubber, Tankard Dental looked to be in this game with a chance of victory – but with wins in all the second round singles, plus the second doubles, Spanline quickly took control and put the match out of reach for their rivals.
For the third week in a row, Leon Brown scored three singles wins to give his side a clear advantage. Brown’s wins over opposing captain Arnold Jago and number two Jessica Dorman showed him in dominant form, but it was the persistent and feisty Claire Ljubic that caused him a bit of trouble in the first rubber played. Brown raced away with the first two sets 2 and 3. Ljubic fought hard to take the third 12-10, and Brown had to work a lot harder to finish the match at 11-9 in the fourth.
Spanline’s Cole Keegan and Tony Malycha both took two wins (both defeating Jessica Dorman and Ljubic), but both lost out to Jago. Malycha came within a whisker of downing Jago, but lost the fifth narrowly.
The doubles were shared: Jago and Ljubic defeated Brown and Malycha in straight sets, 8, 8 and 6, but Brown and Keegan turned the tables on Tankard Dental, defeating Jago and Dorman. After five entertaining sets, the Spanline side had the win 5-11, 11-4, 11-7, 8-11, 12-10.
Final scores: 8 rubbers to 3 and 27 games to 17.
– Max Miller Carpets 7 (Glen Bell 3, Seval Fuat 2, Sabrina Fitzpatrick 1) d Mallee Bearings 4 (George Papanicolaou 2, Geoff Peters 1)
Max Miller Carpets took their third win for the season in a dominant display against ladder leaders Mallee Bearings. Mallee Bearings were never in with a chance, at 4-0 down after the first doubles, it was a matter of damage control.
Glen Bell led the way for the Carpeters, taking three wins, Seval Fuat backed him up with two, and Sabrina Fitzpatrick took one, and almost two as well.
Bell zipped through George Papanicolaou in the first rubber played, winning 7, 4 and 7; in the second round, he had an up-and-down match against Peter Fitzpatrick, but won in five 11-9, 14-16, 12-10, 2-11, 11-5; and in the last he was more consistent and defeated Geoff Peters in four sets.
Fuat took wins over Peters and Fitzpatrick, and Sabrina Fitzpatrick after being two sets to love down 5-11, 10-12 to husband Peter, managed to flummox him to steal the last three sets 11-5, 11-6, 11-6, to take a well deserved win. After winning this rubber, and just to show the singles win was not a fluke, Sabrina and Fuat played Papanicolaou and Peters in the first doubles. They were much too good, taking the match in straight sets 8, 9 and 9. Her next singles rubber was against Geoff Peters, and she almost made it two wins, forcing the rubber to five sets, but losing the fifth 11-6.
For Mallee Bearings, Papanicolaou took two rubbers – a fighting win against Fuat in five 12-10, 7-11, 9-11, 11-7, 11-8, and later against Sabrina in four.
Geoff Peters chipped in with one win, against Sabrina in five, and the Bearings side took the second doubles to give a little bit of respectability to their score.
Final scores: 7 rubbers to 4 and 26 games to 18.
– Fishers IGA 7 (Ed Hung 3, Karly Leach 2, Michael Hensgen 1) d Weightmans Packaging 4 (Lee Thomas 2, Lachlan Kelly 1)
This battle, between the two teams at the bottom of the ladder, became a win for Ed Hung’s Fishers IGA side.
Hung is yet to lose a singles match this year, and he was in no real danger of doing it here. He did lose a set to opposing captain Lee Thomas, but had that match in his control after leveling at one set all, winning 8-11, 12-10, 11-6, 11-7.
Ed’s number two Karly Leach played well. Hung has given Karly a lot of encouragement throughout this pennant, and it paid off here. Karly defeated both Lachlan Kelly and Mick Bacon, players who defeated her the first time these two sides met in round 2.
The doubles rubbers were shared; Weightmans took the second rubber when Thomas and Bacon defeated Hung and Hensgen in five sets. Earlier Hung and Leach proved too strong for Thomas and Kelly 11-9, 11-6, 4-11, 11-9.
For Weightmans Packaging Lee Thomas took two singles and Lachlan Kelly one – Kelly led Hensgen two sets to love, but needed five to take the rubber, winning the last 11-4.
Final scores: 7 rubbers to 4 and 25 games to 15.
PENNANT THREE:
Weightmans Packaging upset ladder leaders Dunkley Scales to join them at the top of the ladder, and Max Miller Carpets put themselves back in with a chance of finals play after a strong win over Mallee Bearings.
– Weightmans Packaging 6 (Winston Easterbrook, Matt Avers, Rachel Fitzpatrick 2) d Dunkley Scales 5 (Mukhwinder Mukhwinder 2, Leonie Dunkley 1)
Dunkley Scales suffered their first defeat of the season, with a loss in this round to second placed Weightmans Packaging, who now join them at the top of the ladder. Weightmans retain top spot, however, by virtue of their better percentage.
An even team performance by Matt Avers, Rachel Fitzpatrick and Winston Easterbrook, with two wins apiece, saw them accumulate five rubbers for the win. Opposing captain, Leonie Dunkley was kept quiet, taking just one singles win. Her number three Mukhwinder Mukhwinder, likewise was limited to just two wins.
Rachel Fitzpatrick was really firing in this match; in the first round of singles she defeated Dunkley in an even contest, winning 11-7, 3-11, 12-10, 7-11, 11-8. She then defeated Jeff Hards in straight sets in the second round, and came within a matter of points of making it three wins for the night when leading Mukhwinder two sets to love 11-4, 13-11 in the final rubber. It was not to be, however, Mukhwinder fought back to take the final three sets 11-7, 11-6, 11-7. She and her captain Matt Avers took their doubles match to five sets, but lost. Rachel’s game has certainly improved this season, and her hard top-spin forehand is causing problems for many of her opponents.
Weightmans number three Winston Easterbook took two singles wins – Easterbrook has been the quiet achiever of this competition, as he now sits second on the aggregate ladder, only one game behind leader Mukhwinder. Here he defeated Hards and Mukhwinder, but lost to Dunkley in five sets, after leading two sets to love.
Weightmans Packaging’s win would have been complete had they been able to take a doubles rubber, but both of them slipped away. Avers and Easterbrook could only temporarily stop Dunkley and Hards by taking the third set in their four set loss, and Avers and Fitzpatrick fought back from two sets to love down in their doubles, only to lose the fifth set 11-8 to Dunkley and Mukhwinder.
Final scores: 6 rubbers to 5 and 25 games to 21.
– Bishop Builders 8 (Kalif Shortt, Helen Frania 3) d Sunny Daily 3 (Tom Douglas, Mohammad Karam, Chris King 1)
Bishop Builders avenged their second round defeat by opponents Sunny Daily, with an easy 8 rubbers to 3 win in this match.
Bishop Builders Captain Kalif Shortt and team-mate Helen Frania both took three singles wins, and the team took both doubles contests. Shortt had the easier time of it in his singles, two wins came in four sets and the other in three. Frania, however, had to work much harder. Both Tom Douglas and Chris King were a chance for victory for Sunny Daily; Douglas was two sets to love down, squared the match, and lost the fifth set narrowly 13-11. King, meanwhile, took the first two sets against Frania 11-3, 11-8 to set himself up for a win, but some determined play by Frania turned the game around; she took the last three sets 11-8, 11-9, 11-7.
The Builders trio capped off an impressive night with wins in both doubles. Shortt and Demi Green took a straight sets win over Mohammad Karam and Tom Douglas 11-9, 11-9, 11-7, and Shortt and Frania had to work only a little harder against Karam and Chris King in the second doubles rubber, taking that 8-11, 11-7, 11-7, 11-7.
Final scores: 8 rubbers to 3 and 24 games to 17.
– Max Miller Carpets 8 (Jol Peters, Ali Mohammad, Paul Fitzpatrick 2) d Mallee Bearings 3 (Jai Green 2)
In another one-sided match, Max Miller Carpets repeated the dose they gave Mallee Bearings in round two, defeating them again in this round.
The three Carpeters scored three singles wins apiece, but none of them could overcome opposing captain Jai Green. Green was much too good for all of them, defeating each player in just three sets.
The Max Miller trio capitalized too, taking both doubles. Jol Peters and Paul Fitzpatrick stuck to their game against Green and Ben Hosking. Down 5-11, 11-8, 9-11, Peters and Fitzpatrick were too good in the final two sets, taking them 11-8, 11-7. And Green and Ali Mohammad did the exact same thing in the second doubles – Green and Quentin Clarke had them down 7-11, 11-4, 8-11, but the Carpeters pair were playing well and took the final two sets 11-9, 11-7.
A confidence boosting win for Max Miller’s here, and a good even team performance.
Final scores: 8 rubbers to 3 and 24 games to 17.
PENNANT FOUR:
– Max Miller Carpets 6 (Therese Fitzpatrick, Wayne Pryor 2, John Fitzpatrick 1) d Pinnacle Packers 5 (Kumail Jaffry 3, Soyel Zahidi 1)
In a thriller Max Miller Carpets recovered from 4-5 deficit to defeat Pinnacle Packers 6-5 in what was a topsy turvy match. Early in the contest the Packers were off to a flyer taking a 4-1 lead but it was the second doubles which kept the Carpeters alive. Carpeters pair John and Therese Fitzpatrick teamed up to win an exciting five setter 11-13 4-11 11-9 12-10 11-9 against a gallant Kumail Jaffry and Matthew Demarco. Jaffry in the next match defeated John Fitzpatrick in four sets to give the Packers a five four lead. Carpeters Wayne Pryor then defeated Soyel Zahidi in four sets to level the match at five rubbers all. Pryor has worked hard on his game in his first season regularly training on Monday nights. By winning two singles he played a big part in the Carpeters victory. In the last Therese Fitzpatrick won her second singles to cap off a good night for her.
For the Packers Kumail Jaffry continued his excellent singles form winning three for the third round in succession. Since joining the competition he has only lost one match.
– Fishers IGA 6 (Shirley Whitecross 3, Rahullah Mirzai 2) d Sunny Daily 5 (Kim Avers 2, Chelsey Avers, Angela Pryor 1)
After two quiet rounds by her standards Fishers skipper Shirley Whitecross bounced back to form winning three singles which enabled her team Fishers IGA to score a 6-5 win over Sunny Daily. By the time Fishers took a 4-1 lead Shirley had won two singles and partnered Rahullah Mirzai in the first doubles to victory over Angela Pryor and Kim Avers. Shirley’s first singles was a beauty when she matched up against the fast improving Kim Avers to win a thriller 11-7 7-11 8-11 11-9 11-6. Kim had Shirley under pressure in the fourth in what was an entertaining match.
Sunny Daily as all good teams do, fought back to level the match at four rubbers all. Shirley then played Angela Pryor and going into this round they were level in the lead on the singles aggregate. On this occasion it was the experienced Shirley who took the points in straight sets. Rahullah Mirzai then won his second singles when he accounted for Chelsey Avers in four sets to give Fishers a well earned win. In the last Kim Avers won her second singles when she defeated fill in Linda Demarco. Avers also partnered Angela Pryor, to a win in the second doubles, to cap off a successful night for her personally.
