PENNANT ONE:

– Tankard Dental 6 (Shannon Bowen 3, Nicholas Dorman 2) d Max Miller Carpets 5 (Mark Dorman 2, Matt Ljubic, Kevin Johns 1)
On paper the match looked even and that is how it panned out. The first three singles of the night were all five setters with the Carpeters winning two to get off to a good start. In form player Matt Ljubic was given a fright by Tankards Jackson Murphy in a battle of the youngsters with Ljubic winning 11-6 6-11 10-12 11-9 11-7. The third match of the night was a real highlight when the father /son clash took place. Carpeters skipper Mark Dorman had his hands full with son Nicholas. Dorman senior took the first two games and then Nicholas worked his way into the match succeeding in the third and fourth. In the fifth it was close all the way with Mark taking the points 11-5 11-9 8-11 3-11 11-8.
In the first doubles Nicholas Dorman combined with fill in Shannon Bowen to defeat Mark Dorman and Matt Ljubic in straight sets and from here these two players controlled the match. After a slow start to the season by his standards young Dorman enjoyed his best form of the season winning his next two singles defeating Kevin Johns in four sets and later Matt Ljubic 15-13 11-6 17-15 a great contest. Team mate Shannon Bowen, filling in for the injured Mark Ljubic was able to win three singles enabling Tankard Dental to win 6-5 and keep in touch with the top four.
– Fishers IGA 6 (Wayne Carmichael, Graeme O’Neill 2, Leslie Ncube 1) d Exposed Signage/Apparel 5 (Joel Thomas 3, Darren Robinson 1)
Ladder leader Fishers IGA remain undefeated after their match against Exposed Signage/ Apparel winning 6-5 despite trailing 4-5 late in the match and earlier they trailed two rubbers to four. But as good sides do they recovered with both Wayne Carmichael and Graeme O’Neill winning two singles each and also combining to score a victory in the second doubles when their team was under the pump. Carmichael lost his first singles for the season losing to the undefeated Joel Thomas in straight sets. Team mate Graeme O’Neill continued his consistent form and his two victories were his best return for the pennant to date. For Exposed Signage, Joel Thomas continued his fine season again winning three singles to remain undefeated in all his matches.
– Weightmans Packaging 7 (Gavin Carmichael 3, Matt Avers 2, Kate Carmichael 1) d Mallee Bearings 4 (Rick McMeekin 2, Michael Hogarth 1)
Weightmans Packaging remained in second position on the ladder by defeating Mallee Bearings 7-4. Weightmans after trailing two rubbers to four stormed home winning the last five matches. In an even display Gavin Carmichael, Matt Avers and Kate Carmichael won three, two and one singles respectively. Overall there were five five setters in this match which was a tremendous contest. First year player in pennant one, youngster Matt Avers continues to improve rapidly. His two singles victories were a four setter over Jackson Tung in a match where both players played some outstanding table tennis. With his team up 5-4 Avers scored a hard fought five set victory over Michael Hogarth 10-12 11-6 9-11 11-7 11-8. This was an outstanding match with Hogarth in a good position early, his defensive returns to some big looping forehands from Avers were impressive but Avers was able to score victory in an excellent comeback.
For Mallee Bearings Rick McMeekin won two singles, he hands his hands full in an entertaining five set victory over Kate Carmichael. McMeekin won the first and fifth comfortably however the other three featured some excellent table tennis. Rick had a rare loss against Gavin Carmichael after leading two games to love. The end result in Carmichael’s favour was 4-11 7-11 11-7 11-7 11-8. Given the number of five setters the four points could have gone either way.
PENNANT TWO: –
Pinnacle Packers picked up their first win this week; while Mallee Bearings and Fishers IGA remained at the top of the table.
– Pinnacle Packers 6 (Peter Midgley 2, Peter Fitzpatrick, Geoff Peters 1) d Bishop Builders 5 (Josh Carmichael 3, Bernadette Fitzpatrick 2)
Pinnacle Packers finally got four premiership points this week, with an eleventh rubber 6-5 win against last week’s giant killers Bishop Builders.
Bishop Builders were without captain Peter Bishop and number three Jeremy Corrin. Bernadette Fitzpatrick and Peter Edwards filled-in respectively.
Pinnacle Packers had to rely on winning both doubles to get them home. Captain Peter Midgley scored two singles wins, against Edwards and Bernadette Fitzpatrick. His win against Fitzpatrick came fairly easily, 1, 6 and 10.
Both Peter Fitzpatrick and Geoff Peters each scored one win, both against Edwards.
And with the help of both doubles, both in three sets, the Packers had their first win.
For Bishop Builders, Josh Carmichael starred. Carmichael took three singles wins – his win against Peter Midgley was a beauty. Midgley could not shake Carmichael, and the game went the full five sets, with the youngster winning 9-11, 14-12, 10-12, 11-5, 12-10 after getting an all important edge when 9-10 down in the fifth to level at 10-10.
Final scores: 6 rubbers to 5 and 23 games to 15.
– Mallee Bearings 7 (Reece Kurrle, Andrew Jones 3, Peter Edwards 1) d Weightmans Packaging 4 (Lee Thomas, Connor Lavery 1)
In a game which featured strong individual play, Mallee Bearings proved too strong for Weightmans Packaging.
Both Reece Kurrle and Andrew Jones for Mallee Bearings scored three wins; Peter Edwards one. The team could not convert that good singles play to the doubles though, Lee Thomas and Connor Lavery won in five sets against Kurrle and Jones, and later Thomas and Andrew Alderton were always in control to defeat Kurrle and Edwards in four sets.
And whilst Andrew Jones won three rubbers, his opposite number Connor Lavery almost got the better of him in their match, going down 15-13 in the fifth. This was after Jones had taken five sets earlier in the evening to defeat Lee Thomas.
The two number three’s had a good tussle; Peter Edwards getting the better of Andrew Alderton in their five set match.
Final scores: 7 rubbers to 4 and 25 games to 18.
– Mallee Meats 7 (Ashley Morrison, Arnold Jago, Cambell McKenzie 2) d MJM Automotive 4 (Sony Sefer 3)
Mallee Meats continue their solid season with a 7-4 win in this round against MJM Automotive.
With MJM Automotive captain Geoff Wright absent once again, Sony Sefer took three singles wins for his team, and partnered Terry Martin to a three set doubles victory. Unfortunately, that was all the rubbers his team amassed on this occasion.
Whilst none of the Mallee Meats trio could defeat Sefer, they each downed Martin and Ajay Chowdhry. Mallee Meats captain Ashley Morrison was not playing at his usual dangerous best – he took four sets to get the better of number three Chowdhry, likewise four sets against Martin. And he really was not a match for Sefer, either, going down in that match 6-11, 11-3, 2-11, 7-11.
Number two Arnold Jago likewise defeated Martin and Chowdhry in four, but the real star of the show was number three Cambell McKenzie having his best night so far. He took Sefer to five sets, going down 11-8 in the fifth; after a tough four setter he defeated Chowdhry 16-14, 14-12, 10-12, 17-15 (don’t see scores like that too often !!), then in the final round, after being two sets to love down against Terry Martin, he fought back to take the rubber 11-7 in the last. This was after he and his captain took the second doubles against Sefer and Chowdhry in four sets.
Final scores: 7 rubbers to 4 and 23 games to 22.
– Fishers IGA 8 (John Gray 3, Brendan Alderton, Seval Fuat 2) d Tankard Dental 3 (Arthur Paar 2)
The Fishers IGA team continue to grow in confidence with each win, this week their number two and three contributing to a handsome 8-3 victory.
Fishers captain John Gray took, for him, his usual three wins – Tankard’s number two Tony Malycha took a set from him, as did opposite number Arthur Paar. It was the performance of his team-mates Seval Fuat and Brendan Alderton which would have brought a smile to his face though. Whilst neither could manage Paar, they both proved too strong for Malycha and Healy, two players who have improved this season.
Fuat made short work of Malycha, not spending much time about it, winning 4, 6 and 3, but had to be a lot more careful against Healy, winning that one in four sets.
Alderton proved too strong for the very strong retriever Healy in a very close game winning 12-10, 14-12, 10-12, 11-9, and in the last round outplayed Malycha in five sets.
Both doubles rubbers went to five sets: in the first Paar and Malycha were two sets to love down before they found their rhythm, taking the last three 8, 7 and 4. The tables were turned in the second doubles though, for in that match Paar and Healy led two sets to love, only to lose the last three.
After five rubbers Tankard Dental led 3-2, but from then on Fishers had it all their own way, taking the last six rubbers to run out easy winners.
Final scores: 8 rubbers to 3 and 24 games to 20.
PENNANT THREE:
MJM Automotive went down to ladder leaders Mallee Meats in the closest game of the round; Kerry Wallace starred for Fishers IGA in their win, and Sabrina Fitzpatrick and Kim Avers gave their team a percentage boosting win.
– Mallee Meats 6 (Quentin Clark 3, Sam Hensgen 2) d MJM Automotive 5 (Mick Bacon 2, John Fitzpatrick, Anthony Sergi 1)
Whilst this game had a 6-5 result, Mallee Meats were in control from early on, leading 4-1 after four rubbers.
Quentin Clark continues to amass three singles wins. This week he had to work very hard against MJM Automotive captain Mick Bacon – Bacon led two sets to one, only for Clark to turn up his work rate. The game had been close to the end of the third, but Clark then asserted his authority, winning 11-6, 8-11, 10-12, 11-6, 11-7.
Mallee Meats captain Sam Hensgen contributed two singles, and he and Clark played well to down Bacon and John Fitzpatrick in the first doubles, winning 11-9 in the fifth.
For MJM Automotive, Bacon defeated Hensgen in four, and David Sergi in three; John Fitzpatrick and Anthony Sergi both defeated David Sergi. In his other singles match, Fitzpatrick kept Hensgen honest, he led 14-16, 11-7, 13-11, but then faded, and Hensgen took the last two sets 7 and 7 to scrape home.
Final scores: 6 rubbers to 5 and 20 games to 22.
– Fishers IGA 7 (Kerry Wallace 3, Claire Ljubic, Steve Tsivoglou 1) d Weightmans Packaging 4 (Huseyin Ismail 2, Daniel Griffiths, Karly Leach 1)
Kerry Wallace starred for her team in this game, winning everything she played in.
Wallace played well, conceding only two sets in singles play, and none in the doubles.
That gave her team five rubbers: Claire Ljubic, subbing for Tom Denning scored one – defeating Karly Leach in a surprise three set result. Steve Tsivoglou also had a win – against Daniel Griffiths in the final rubber. In a close game Tsivoglou won 9-11, 11-8, 10-12, 11-8, 11-9 to give his team a 7-4 win.
Final scores: 7 rubbers to 4 and 23 games to 16.
– Dunkley Scales 9 (Sabrina Fitzpatrick, Kim Avers 3, Shirley Whitecross 1) d Tankard Dental 2 (Michael Hensgen, Stefan Ljubic 1)
Dunkley Scales scored the easiest of wins in this game, having the result in the bag after the second doubles.
Sabrina Fitzpatrick and Kim Avers both took three wins: Fitzpatrick executing them in three sets each, Avers in three against Andrew Edwards, four against Michael Hensgen and against Stefan Ljubic in a close 11-6, 7-11, 8-11, 11-8, 12-10 five set contest. Shirley Whitecross had a good night, taking one win, and almost making it two. She had a great fight with Ljubic, before going down to him 12-10, 7-11, 13-11, 11-7, 11-9.
Both doubles fell to the ladies, Fitzpatrick and Avers much too good for Hensgen and Ljubic and later Sabrina and Shirley conceding only one set to Hensgen and Andrew Edwards.
Not much to cheer about for Tankard Dental – only Hensgen and Ljubic contributed to their score, both defeating Shirley Whitecross.
Final scores: 9 rubbers to 2 and 29 games to 10.
