PENNANT ONE:

Round two of Sunraysia Table Tennis featured some excellent head-to-head singles matches with several five set results taking place. Each match was decided by a 6-5 margin with the highlight being the victory by Weightmans Packaging over Tankard Dental. Weightmans snatched victory from the jaws of defeat in an outstanding comeback.

– Weightmans Packaging 6 (Wayne Carmichael, Thanh Nguyen 2, Lee Leeson 1) d Tankard Dental 5 (Jamie Kealley, Reece Kurrle 2)

The Tankard team at one stage thought they were headed for their second win in succession when they took a 5-2 lead. Tankard’s were off to a flyer courtesy of Jamie Kealley and Reece Kurrle winning their first two singles respectively, Kurrle in particular on fire defeating Wayne Carmichael in five sets. Kurrle raced through the first two games comfortably before Carmichael steadied and levelled the match in a good comeback however Kurrle regrouped to go on to an impressive win. 
Apart from their singles victories Kealley and Kurrle then combined to win the first doubles over Carmichael and Thanh Nguyen in four sets.

With their backs to the wall Weightmans then began a comeback courtesy of Wayne Carmichael and Lee Leeson defeating Kealley and Ed Hung in straight sets in the second doubles. After his singles loss earlier Carmichael then accounted for young gun Jamie Keally in four sets, a very entertaining contest. Spectators then witnessed arguably the match of the round when Weightmans Thanh Nguyen won his fifth of six singles of the season. This match against the inform Reece Kurrle saw Nguyen recover from initially a 1-2 game deficit and then in an outstanding finish Nguyen kept his team alive by recovering from a 5-10 deficit in the fifth to storm home to a 12-10 victory, an amazing recovery. The scores now stood at five rubbers all with Weightmans number three Lee Leeson to match up against Ed Hung.
Again, it looked like Tankards were heading for victory with Hung racing out to a two games to love start and in control, however Leeson had other ideas and she was able to claw her way back to win 7-11 3-11 11-8 11-8 11-9 a tense finish and a brilliant comeback from the Weightmans trio who now sit at the head of the ladder, the only undefeated team.

– Choices Flooring Mildura 6 (Arhuang (Wong) Lau 3, Rohan Reimers, Jason Gifkins 1) d Regional Taxation Services 5 (Kate Carmichael, Andrew Cannard 2)

Regional Taxation Services started strongly against Choices Flooring Mildura to take a 4-2 lead, this was courtesy of a marathon win in the first doubles by RTS pair Kate Carmichael and Andrew Cannard winning 11-4 14-12 5-11 9-11 14-12 over Arhuang Lau and Rohan Reimers. Choices skipper Lau proved to be the difference in the battle for the four points combining with teammate Jason Gifkins to win the second doubles, he then proceeded to win his third singles of the night when he accounted for Kate Carmichael in another five-set contest. Lau took the first two games comfortably before Carmichael levelled the match however Lau then motored away in the fifth with some powerful forehands.
Apart from Lau winning three singles both of his teammates Rohan Rimers and Jason Gifkins won an important singles each. At five rubbers all Gifkins accounted for first season player Michael Tan in the third five set slog of the match, a close encounter.
 Andrew Cannard was the best performed player for Regional Taxation Services winning two singles and a doubles.

– Mallee Bearings 6 (Jackson Tung 3, Paul Kealley 1) d Cookes Pools & Spas 5 (Matt Ljubic, Duy Truong 2, Mark Dorman 1)

Doubles were the key in the remaining match with Mallee Bearings winning both in their 6-5 victory over Cookes Pools & Spas. Bearings skipper Jackson Tung also led the way winning three singles while late in the contest Tung’s number two Paul Kealley won an important singles in four sets against the talented Mark Dorman. Earlier Kealley had lost both his matches in five sets, the first against Duy Truong who has been promoted from pennant two this season. In the closest of encounters Truong won 11-9 11-9 8-11 8-11 11-9, he later won a second singles against opposing number three Ash Morrison in straight sets proving he has deserved his promotion.
 
Teammates Matt Ljubic also won two singles while Mark Dorman won one, however it was their inability to win a doubles which proved costly in the quest for the four points.

PENNANT TWO:

Tankard Dental won for the second week in a row, whilst losers from last week, Weightmans Packaging and Pinnacle Packers played each other, Weightmans winning that one, and Mallee Meats the other losers in round one, defeated Sammy’s Slammers.

– Mallee Meats 9 (Quentin Clark 3, Peter Midgley, Jamie Stanley 2) d Sammy’s Slammers 2 (Daniel Jansen 2)

Mallee Meats proved much too strong for Sammy’s Slammers in this round two match.

Sammy’s Slammers did not really get a look-in, the Mallee Meats trio of Quentin Clark, Peter Midgley and Jamie Stanley winning three, two and two rubbers respectively. Added to that haul, Clark and Stanley won the second doubles in four sets against Daniel Jansen and Yen Hwak.

Quentin Clark was in good form, conceding only 11 points to Hwak, 14 to Ryan Hensgen and against opposing captain Jansen, a good four set victory.

Peter Midgley, subbing for Deegan Kerslake had two solid wins; in three sets against Hwak, and four sets against Hensgen. Similarly, Jamie Stanley defeated Hwak in thre and Hensgen in four.

Sammy’s Slammers captain Daniel Jansen battled hard, but could only get wins against Midgley (four sets) and Stanley (three sets). With Hensgen, Sammy’s Slammers won the first doubles in straight sets against Clark and Midgley.

After going down seven rubbers to four last week to Tankard Dental, Mallee Meats came back strongly in this game.

Final scores: Mallee Meats won 8 rubbers to 3 and 25 games to 13.


– Tankard Dental 6 (Josh Arnold 3, Kym Sykes 1) d Dunkley Scales 5 (Rasin Bhuiyan, Chris Cen 2, Sam Campbell 1)


Following up their seven rubbers to four win in round one, Tankard Dental edged Dunkley Scales in this match.

Tankard Dental captain Josh Arnold won his three singles rubbers. He had a lot of trouble against Dunkley Scales number three Sam Campbell in the first round of singles. In a far from convincing performance Josh won the encounter 18-16, 10-12, 13-15, 11-9, 11-8. He had less trouble against Chris Cen, winning in three sets, and then against opposing
captain Rasin Bhuiyan, he won in four sets in what was the winning rubber.

The only other singles rubber that Tankard Dental was courtesy of their number two Kym Sykes who defeated Campbell in four sets.

That meant that, in order to make up six rubbers, Tankard Dental won both the doubles encounters. Arnold and Sykes won the first match-up against Bhuiyan and Cen in five sets, 12-10 in the last. In the second doubles, Arnold and Juan Castro won in four close sets against Bhuiyan and Campbell 11-9, 12-10, 12-14, 12-10.

There were two rubbers in all that where Tankard Dental would know they got out of gaol, Arnold’s five set over Campbell, and the first doubles.

Dunkley Scales did not play badly; Bhuiyan and Cen both won two singles rubbers, and Campbell one. They would be thinking that this was one that got away … and they are right.

Both these sides have now won one match and lost one for the season.

Final scores: Tankard Dental won 6 rubbers to 5 and 22 games each.


– Weightmans Packaging 6 (Kevin Johns 3, Steve Parker 1) d Pinnacle Packers 5 (Therese Fitzpatrick, James Jarvis 2, Andrew Jones 1)


In the second six rubbers to five result of the round, Weightmans Packaging downed Pinnacle Packers, and for the second week in a row, Pinnacle Packers, in defeat, won more games than the victor, 21 to 20 this week, 24 to 22 last week.

In a mirror image of the Tankard Dental – Dunkley Scales game, the Pinnacle Packers trio of Therese Fitzpatrick, James Jarvis and Andrew Jones won 2, 2 and 1 singles rubbers respectively, and lost to the team which won both doubles, the victor’s captain (in this case Kevin Johns) winning three rubbers, and his number two, Steve Parker one. In another eerie co-incidence, players in this match won the exact same rubbers as those in their aforementioned Tankard Dental – Dunkley Scales game.

Johns defeated old sparring partner Andrew Jones (subbing for Koby Grace) in four sets; he downed Jarvis in a great five set contest 14-16, 11-6, 11-4, 6-11, 13-11, and secured the match when he downed opposing captain Therese Fitzpatrick in three sets.

As mentioned, Steve Parker contributed one rubbers to the victor’s tally when he defeated Jones in three sets. Johns and Parker won the first doubles in five sets 8-11, 12-14, 11-5, 12-10, 11-7, and Johns and Andrew Kremor got the better of Fitzpatrick and Jones in just four sets.

Fitzpatrick and Jarvis both defeated Parker and Kremor for two rubbers each, and Jones also defeated Kremor to give their side five rubbers, but with both the doubles rubbers going to the other end of the table, it was not enough.

This win gives Weightmans Packaging their first win of the season, whilst Pinnacle Packers have had two narrow defeats.

Final scores: Weightmans Packaging won 6 rubbers to 5 and 20 games to 21.

PENNANT THREE:

After a delay the pennant three summer competition has commenced with six teams taking part. There is no pennant four in this pennant, so this is an opportunity for the pennant 4 regulars to play against some new opponents.
A big welcome to new player Joel Bottams who has been a Monday hitting regular for quite some time now (Son of Darren). Good to see Anthony Fox back playing after a break from the game, Anthony has come into this pennant after a late withdrawal after the teams were selected. After a season off Nick Kiapekos is back and keen to go. After recovering from injury Leanne Wilson has also rejoined us and is looking forward to the season ahead. A big thank you to Costa Skiadis who came in as a late fill-in.

– Cookes Pools & Spas 7 (Sabrina Fitzpatrick 3, Glenn Leeson 2, Joel Bottams 1) d Regional Taxation Services 4 (Peter Fitzpatrick 2, Maria Starikov 1)

This was a topsy turvy match with Regional Taxation Services jumping out to a 4-2 lead only to have their opponents win the final five rubbers and take the match 7-4.
In a very even team performance the Cookes Pools & Spas trio of Sabrina Fitzpatrick, Glenn Leeson and Joel Bottams won three two and one singles respectively.
Included in Sabrina’s three victories was a straight sets defeat of husband Peter. With their team trailing 2-4 Cookes Glenn Leeson stepped up to the plate defeating Conner Burnett in four sets, he then combined with Joel Bottams to win the second doubles in straight sets against Peter and Conner. Two matches later after Sabrina accounted for Peter, Glenn then won a lengthy three setter against the stubborn Maria Starikov 11-7 11-5 16-14.
With the four points banked after an excellent comeback Cookes number three Joel Bottams won his first singles match defeating Conner Burnett in four sets, a good victory.
The doubles were shared and RTS number one Peter Fitzpatrick was their best player winning two singles as well as the first doubles with Maria as his teammate.     
 
Cookes Pools & Spas 7 defeated Regional Taxation Services 4
Games: 22 to 14

– Mallee Meats 8 (Anthony Fox, Tom Gilmour 3) d Exposed Signage/Apparel 3 (Leanne Wilson, Nick Kiapekos, Nathan Beard 1)

Mallee Meats took control early in this match and finished strongly to defeat Exposed Signage/Apparel 8-3. For the victors both Anthoy Fox and Tom Gilmour showed excellent early season form winning three singles each. The first match of the night was a beauty when Tom took to the table against Nathan Beard. After many long rallies Tom took the first two games, Nathan kept working hard and grabbed the third narrowly before he levelled the match at two games all in a strong display in the fourth. Tom then regrouped in the fifth to take an early ascendancy and go on and win 11-6 11-8 11-13 5-11 11-4, a great battle from Nathan.
Later in the match Tom and Nick Kiapekos fought out another lengthy five setter, after a first game close loss Nick then won the second and third games before Tom then took control in the fourth and fifth to win in a top-class match 14-12 6-11 8-11 11-7 11-8.
 By winning both doubles Mallee Meats were able to record a healthy win.
The Exposed trio of Nick Kiapekos, Leanne Wilson who is returning after a break and Nathan Beard all won a singles each and will be better for the run and will be looking to bounce back in the next round.      
Mallee Meats 8 defeated Exposed Signage/Apparel 3
Games: 26 to 14

– Dunkley Scales 8 (Michael Hensgen 3, Rodney Galvin, Conner Burnett 2) d Mallee Bearings 3 (Hayden Wilson 2)

The scoreline in this match seemed to indicate a one-sided contest with Dunkley Scales winning 8-3 however the results show that there were four five setters and four four setters indicating many close contests. With Karly Leach holidaying in Scotland searching for the Loch Ness monster, Michael Hensgen came into the Dunkley’s lineup while Conner Burnett came in at late notice to play in the number three position for Dunkley’s. For Mallee Bearings Costa Skiadis came in to the team as a fill in.
A highlight was the results of both doubles, each going to five sets wit the spoils shared, both matches decided with the scoreline of 11-9 in the fifth, both marathons.
For Dunkley’s Michael Hensgen’s experience showed through as he won three singles however he did not have it all his own way as his match against opposing number one Hayden Wilson went to five sets and ended up a thriller. Hayden took the initiative early to lead two games to one, in particular Hayden was on fire in the third game and Michael needed to fully concentrate to get himself back into the match. After a lengthy playing time Michael was able to claim the points 10-12 11-6 2-11 11-9 11-9 a close match and well played Hayden.
Fillin Conner Burnett also won another marathon five setter defeating another young gun Jakob Grzan 11-7 10-12 11-4 6-11 12-10 an impressive match from the two up and comers.
In the washup Dunkley’s were able to win the final three singles with Michael Hensgen winning three singles over the evening while teammates Rodney Galvin and Conner Burnett won two each.
Mallee Bearing’s skipper Hayden Wilson played well to win two singles and was oh so close to winning three.
