Ladder leader Regional Taxation Services avoided a loss against the winless Choices Flooring Mildura by the barest of margins while fifth placed Mallee Bearings kept their finals hopes alive with a strong 8-3 win over fourth placed Cookes Pools & Spas .

– Tankard Dental 6 (Shannon Bowen 3, Reece Kurrle 2, Jason Gifkins 1) d Weightmans Packaging 5 (Wayne Carmichael 2, Mark Dorman 1)

The big winners this round were Tankard Dental who in an even team effort narrowly outpointed third placed Weightmans Packaging to move four points clear into second place. This is an ominous sign given they have grabbed the all-important double chance and are peaking at the right time with three rounds remaking before the finals.

Victory came for Tankards despite not picking up a doubles win.  Skipper Shannon Bowen ked the way winning three singles including a rare victory over Wayne Carmichael in a dominant display. Bowen received excellent support from teammates Reece Kurrle and Jason Gifkins who won two and one singles respectively. Kurrle played his power game and was oh so close to winning three singles as he held a match point in his marathon match versus Wayne Carmichael. Carmichael needed to draw on all his experience to win 11-9 7-11 19-17 7-11 17-15, what a match.

With the scores locked at five rubbers all it was Tankard’s number three Jason Gifkins who was able to outlast last rounds hero Ed Hung. Gifkins took the first game however Hung quelled the nerves and eased through the second and third, Gifkins now under extreme pressure and after tinkering with his match plan levelled at two games all. The four points were now on the line, and it was Gifkins who moved ahead in the fifth before late in the game Hung fought back however in a thriller Gifkins hung on to win 11-8 7-11 9-11 11-6 11-9.

Amazingly Tankard Dental trailed 3-5 going in to the last block of three singles and by each team member defeating their opposite number victory came Tankard’s way 6-5.

 – Mallee Bearings 8 (Arhuang (Wong) Lau 3, Leon Brown 2, Russell Walder 1) d Cookes Pools & Spas 3 (Kate Carmichael 2, Paul Kealley 1)

Mallee Bearings with a sound 8-3 victory over Cookes Pools & Spas have now given themselves a real chance of reaching the finals. This was their fourth win in the past five rounds after winning one match in the first seven. Skipper Arhuang Lau led the way winning three singles as well as taking part in both doubles’ victories. Lau recovered from a 1-2 deficit against Kate Carmichael to win a thriller 11-9 in the fifth. He is in good form and landing many powerful forehands as is teammate Leon Brown who won two singles and he pressured Carmichael before going down in the fifth. Mallee Bearings number three Russell Walder continued his solid season winning one singles while also taking part in a lengthy five set win in the second doubles.

Cookes are officially in a slump and now have lost their past four matches and due to their poor percentage are in danger of slipping from the four. A big three rounds ahead.

 – Regional Taxation Services 6 (Jackson Tung, Liam Wood 2, Lee Leeson 1) d Choices Flooring Mildura 5 (Jamie Kealley 3, Thanh Nguyen 1)

Regional Taxation Services retained their two-game break at the head of the ladder with a hard fought 6-5 win over bottom team Choices Flooring Mildura who may consider themselves unlucky not to record their first win. Choices number one Jamie Kealley after a couple of quiet weeks has bounced back to good form recently and this round he won his three singles including an excellent win over Jackson Tung in a close five setter 5-11 11-8 11-5 6-11 14-12. Kealley also combined with Thanh Nguyen to win the first doubles.

Choices Flooring jumped out to a 4-2 lead and an upset was brewing however to their credit RTS fought their way back to win four of the final five rubbers in a strong finish. At five all this was familiar territory for RTS number three Lee Leeson who now has featured in the last four rounds when the scores were deadlocked. The experienced Leeson remained calm in the circumstances and for the third time over these four rounds Leeson was able to gain the points for her team by outpointing Marcus Cimino in three sets.

Leeson also teamed with skipper Tung to win the important second doubles while teammates Tung and Liam Wood won two singles each in an even team performance.

Choices Flooring Mildura 6 Therese Fitzpatrick (2), Josh Arnold (2), Steve Parker (0) defeated Sammy’s Slammers 5 Quentin Clark (2), James Jarvis (2), Ryan Hensgen (1).

Choices Flooring got themselves their sixth win in round 13 by knocking back fourth-placed Sammy’s Slammers. The competition in Pennant 2 remains very tight, with the three top teams, after round 13, all having 6 wins. Now, with only two rounds left, it will be interesting to see if ladder leaders Mallee Meats can retain the top spot, or if Choices Flooring or Pinnacle Packers can steal it before the finals.

The reliable Arnold took out the first win of the night, defeating Jarvis, 11-9, 6-11, 11-5, 11-8. Captain Fitzpatrick took care of Hensgen in like manner, 11-7, 11-8, 6-11, 11-8, while Clark smoothly took down substitute Parker in straight sets 11-3, 11-7, 11-4. Things came to a head in the first doubles with the Choices Flooring duo taking the first set 11-8, then the Sammys swooping in in the second 11-5, and then holding on like a dog with a bone in the last two but ultimately losing, 12-14, 12-14.

Jarvis then attacked Fitzpatrick with all he had and after a bad stumble in the third set, took the win, 8-11, 11-6, 3-11, 11-8, 11-9, bringing the score to 3-2, Choices Flooring’s way. Clark then got them to 3-3 with a win over Arnold in four, 11-6, 9-11, 11-6, 14-12, as Hensgen then went all the way against a stubborn Parker. Hensgen took the first set 11-6, Parker turned up the heat and won the next two 11-4, 11-4, but Hensgen was unfazed, fighting his way back to win, 11-5, 11-6, putting the Sammys ahead at 4-3.

But Choices Flooring weren’t about to let the Sammys get too far in front, reigning them back in with a win in the second doubles, 11-13, 11-5, 11-8, 13-11.

The matchup of the No. 1’s did not disappoint, with Fitzpatrick adamant to get that fifth rubber and Clark doing everything in his power to stop her. They traded shots back and forth throughout a gruelling five-setter, with Fitzpatrick clenching the win 12-10, 9-11, 11-7, 7-11, 11-5, putting her team ahead 5-4. Jarvis then levelled it 5-5 with a clean win over Parker, 11-6, 11-9, 11-8, leaving Hensgen and Arnold to battle it out in the decider. Hensgen did what he could and after coming very close to winning the second set, ceded the victory to his opponent, 5-11, 12-14, 10-12.

Final score 6 rubbers to 5 and 23 games to 21.

Pinnacle Packers 6 Duy Truong (3), Andrew Jones (1), Steve Parker (1) defeated Mallee Meats 5 Michael Tan (2), Harry Gujral (2), Ryan Hensgen (0).

Top team Mallee Meats took a hit in round 13 from Pinnacle Packers, who may have their sights set on getting into the top spot before the finals. They will face some stiff competition going forward though, from both Meats and the formidable second-placed Choices Flooring.

The opening game was a banger, with Jones and Hensgen battling it out, the former just scraping by in the fifth, 11-7, 7-11, 11-8, 6-11, 14-12. Parker then worried Tan in their match, with the No. 3 coming very close in the third set but ultimately losing 10-12, 9-11, 14-16. The unstoppable Truong then took out Gujral 11-6, 11-5, 11-5, as the two sides then went into the first doubles match. Packers looked good in the first set, taking it 11-9, but somewhere along the line they lost their focus, giving Meats the opportunity to get ahead and win, 11-6, 11-4, 11-4.

Tan then comfortably beat Jones in three, 11-5, 11-4, 11-5, as Truong took his second rubber of the evening, this time against Hensgen, 11-8, 11-9, 11-6, levelling the score to 3-3. Gujral and Parker then engaged in yet another three-setter, with Gujral taking it after a brief struggle, 11-5, 12-10, 11-4. The next doubles match would prove to be an odd match, with both sides seemingly running out of puff towards the end. Packer’s Truong and Parker got off to a good start, winning 12-10, 11-6, Meats then grit their teeth and mounted a comeback, taking the third 12-10, and then the fourth a whopping 11-1. It was anyone’s game as they went into the fifth, with Meats fading and repeating their opponent’s dismal effort from the fourth set, losing 1-11, and levelling the score again at 4-4.

The two captains then duked it out, with Truong winning the first 11-8, Tan snatching up the second 11-6, and then Truong recovering and taking the last two 11-2, 11-7. Jones would then prove to be no match for Gujral, with the latter winning 11-5, 11-3, 11-2, bringing the night to a decider at 5-5. In said decider,

Parker would take the first set against Hensgen, 11-8, before just losing the second 10-12. Hensgen, however failed to make any headway in the next two sets, garnering a total of four points before losing the match, 11-3, 11-1.

Final score 6 rubbers to 5 and 19 rubbers to 21.

– Cookes Pools & Spas 6 (Peter Fitzpatrick, Koby Grace 2, Yen Hwak 1) d Regional Taxation Services 5 (Andrew Kremor, Brenden Johnson 2)

This was a tightly contested clash, with Cookes Pools & Spas emerging victorious over Regional Taxation Services by 6 rubbers to 5.

Earlier in the contest Regional Taxation Services matched it with their more fancied opponents and in particular the five set win by RTS number two Brenden Johnson instilled confidence in his team. When aggregate leader Andrew Kremor accounted for the inform Koby Grace in three sets Regional Taxation Services took a 3-2 lead and hopes were high.

When RT S number three Curtis Crabtree started fast against Peter Fitzpatrick to win the first game things were looking encouraging however Peter steadied to win in four sets and now the match was level at three rubbers all.

Regional Taxation Services then grabbed two matches in succession to lead 5-3 and an upset looked to be on the cards. Firstly, Brenden Johnson fought out another lengthy five setter, this time against Yen Hwak, both playing powerful shots, Brenden mostly forehands while Yen rattled off many of his favoured back hands. In a thriller Brenden took the points 11-5 4-11 11-8 6-11 11-9, a great match.

Brenden then combined with skipper Andrew to defeat the strong pair of Peter and Yen, they did this after dropping the first game, then steadied to take the match 5-11 11-7 13-11 11-8.

The match then stood at 5-3 in favour of the hardworking Regional Taxation Services.

Cookes skipper went in to the last block of singles knowing any hiccup would enable the four point chase to be gone, the odds were against Peter as he was up against Andrew Kremor the runaway aggregate leader and when Andrew took a two games to one lead Peter was further under the pump however in his usual steady style Peter took the fourth by the narrowest of margins before he motored away in the fifth to keep his team alive. The final scoreline in Peter’s favour 11-8 5-11 11-13 11-9 11-4 a great skipper’s win.

Cookes number two Koby Grace then took to the table against Brenden who had won two singles already as well as his doubles. After a long first game Koby took the points, Brenden bounced back to take the second and in the third and fourth Brenden battled hard however Koby proved too steady to win 11-8 5-11 11-9 11-8, the score now five rubbers all.

With the four points on the line Cookes Yen was on fire calmy disposing of Curtis who tried his hardest to get into the match however it wasn’t to be and in an outstanding comeback the ladder leader’s Cookes had recovered from a 3-5 deficit to win 6-5.

For the victors Peter and Koby won two singles while Yen banked the four points at five all.

Regional Taxation Services fought hard to keep themselves in the contest. Andrew Kremor won two singles,

while Brenden Johnson after missing for a few weeks was in fine form contributing two wins including a solid five-set win over Peter Fitzpatrick.

The doubles proved pivotal, with Cookes Pools & Spas taking the opening doubles through Fitzpatrick and Grace, while Regional Taxation Services responded later in the evening when Kremor and Johnson combined effectively.

In the end, Cookes Pools & Spas recovered and edged ahead on the overall scoreboard, finishing with 24 games to 19, sealing a hard-fought 6–5 victory and collecting another valuable win as the Winter Pennant season heads towards its closing rounds. Cookes are the red-hot favourites given they have only lost one match however the other teams have still been able to keep them on their toes.

Games: 24 to 19

– Weightmans Packaging 6 (Kym Sykes, Matt Sires 2, Steve Pongrac 1) d Exposed Signage/Apparel 5 (Karly Leach, Chris Cen 2)

In another thriller Weightmans Packaging outpointed second team Exposed Signage/Apparel with an excellent 6-5 victory. Weightmans number one Sabrina Fitzpatrick was a late withdrawal and Pennant four aggregate leader Kym Sykes came in to the team for his second opportunity at this level.

The Exposed team of Karly Leach, Chris Cen and Hayden Wilson were at full strength and went in to this match as favourites and quickly raced out to a 3-1 lead. These three wis included two long five set victories. The first by Karly over Steve Pongrac. After dropping the first two games Steve fought back well to level the match however Karly hung on in her determined way to win 11-2 11-8 12-14 7-11 11-9, a marathon.

Karly then combined with Chris Cen to fend off opponents Steve and fill in Kym from pennant four in another five-set slog. Karly and Chris took the first two games before Steve and Kym then raced through the third and fourth and were feeling confident however it wasn’t to be as Karly and Chris lifted a gear and raced away with the fifth to win 11-5 11-8 3-11 7-11 11-3.

With Weightmans now trailing 1-3 it was their fill in Kym Sykes who mounted the beginning of the comeback. Kym was up against the talented Chris Cen who is third on the singles and what a match this proved to be. After many long rallies the games went one for one after Kym won the first. After reaching the fifth it was Kym who maintained control going on to win 11-9 8-11 11-6 6-11 11-5.

Weightmans number three Matt Sires then produced an outstanding straight sets win over opposing number one Karly Leach, this one of Matt’s best wins of the season. Matt showed good form in the grading sessions however after seven rounds had not recorded a singles win despite several close games. Since breaking out with his first win in round nine he has won seven matches despite missing a week, the second-best record of the number threes over that time.

The score now stood at three rubbers all and Weightmans were on a roll which continued when Steve Pongrac outpointed Hayden Wilson while Steve then combined with Matt in the second doubles to defeat Karly and Hayden 10-12 11-7 13-11 11-9.

In an amazing turnaround Weightmans had strung four wins together to take a 5-3 lead.

Exposed skipper Karly knew the four points were on the line and after a strong start by Kym it was Karly who played her usual steady style to keep the Exposed team in the match by winning 5-11 11-9 9-11 11-8 11-6 a great tussle from both participants.

Karly’s teammate Chris then kept Steve at bay winnji9ng in straight sets and in what had been a topsy turvy contest the scores stood at five rubbers all.

Both number threes Weightmans Matt and Exposed’s Hayden took to the table to decide the four points and the first two games were as close as you could get with Matt just edging ahead in both after many long rallies. In the third Matt had the confidence to play a more attacking game and it was Matt who went on to win 12-10 11-9 11-5 giving Weightmans Packaging a 6-5 victory.

Victory came due to the good form of fill in Kym Sykes who won two singles as well as teaming with Steve Pongrac to secure the opening doubles rubber. Number three Matt Sires was also important in gaining the four points winning two singles while Steve Pongrac won one, a good team effort.

Exposed Signage and Packaging refused to go away quietly. Chris Cen was outstanding, winning two singles throughout the evening continuing his consistent season. Skipper Karly Leach also won two singles, whilst also winning the first doubles with Chris however it was not to be for their team this round. Despite the loss they cannot lose second place on the ladder which includes the valuable double chance.

With both teams trading blows all night, the contest came down to the finer details. Weightmans Packaging ultimately did just enough to emerge with the 6–5 win, continuing their recent strong form as the Winter Pennant season edges closer to finals, while Exposed Signage and Packaging can take plenty of positives from a spirited performance that pushed their opponents all the way.

PENNANT FOUR:

Was it the crazy number 13, or was it just a coincidence, but the winner of both matches started off a little slow, but came home like a bullet train, winning five of the last six Rubbers to be victors on the night. Just shows it’s never over till the fat Lady sings ….. now, that comment could be taken the wrong way, so maybe it was a thin Man singing, or an evenly distributed, well balanced Table Tennis player.

– Weightmans Packaging 6 (Glenn Leeson, Jakob Grzan 2, Lewis Hussey 1) d Tankard Dental 5 (Tom Gilmour, Costa Skiadis 2)

Tankard – Tom Gilmour, Darren Bottams (Fill in – Costa Skidas) and Jake Hines. Weightman’s – Glenn Leeson, Jakob Grzan and Connor Burnett (Lewis Hussey).

Weightman’s did collect the first Rubber, with Jake loosing to Jakob, in three sets, but Tankards number three player certainly shook things up in the second set, giving Jakob a run for his money forcing the game out to 12.

From here the Tankard team grabbed the bull by the horns and penciled in the following four Rubbers.

After Lewis snuck in the first set against Tom, the match stepped up a notch, with Tom bringing out some of his well know spinning shots, but Lewis also had some tricks up his sleeve and gave back quite a few great returns. He fought hard before Tom took the win.

Costa has a consistent game and usually is a very reliable fill in, so this tussle between him and Glenn, who, due to a Sinus Op, had missed over three week of play, would be an exiting match. Costa got off to a quick start and nabbed the first two sets, with a good battle in the second going to 14. The four set win, fell to Costa, after some terrific rallies.

Glenn and Jakob were strong in the first Doubles match, with the second and fourth sets being forced out to 12 and 15, but in the finish Tom and Costa found a way to get over the Weightman’s pair in four.

Tom kept his good form going in his singles against Jakob, winding things up after three sets. Jakob did put up a good battle, but couldn’t get a handle on Tom’s game. This put Tankard on 4 Rubbers to 1, with a massive advantage.

Glenn stood up, as a Captain should and pulled back a Rubber when he face Jake, with an easy win and a little breathing space.

Lewis played extremely well in this five set match, marking up the first two sets and putting the pressure on in all but one set of the of the next three. But Weightman’s win was countered in this next match, with consistency from Costa giving Tankard their Fifth and placing Weightman’s in a difficult position, having to win all the remaining games.

The last Doubles was only a three setter, but every point was played with determination. Glenn and Lewis snatched the first two, which both went out to 13 and Tom and Jake did their best to work their way into the third, gaining 9 points, but Weightman’s knew the importance of these wins and this started off their amazing run.

Tom and Glenn had a ripper match Glenn sneaking the first, before Tom interrupted the proceedings, to take the next two. With the pressure back on Weightman’s number one, Glenn brought out the big guns and brought it home for his team.

Two more matches to play and Jakob was up against Costa, who had two wins under his belt. To young Jakobs credit, he brought out his A game and used his talent to pinch the Rubber.

This would be the decider, with both teams sitting on five and Lewis was the favorite in this battle, so it would have had him worried, when Jake notched up the first set. Lewis held his ground and gave Weightman’s the Victory, after it looking like they were gone.

WINNER : Weightman’s Packaging 6  to Tankard Dental  5.

GAMES : Weightman’s  23  to Tankard  18.

– Mallee Meats 7 (Kym Sykes 3, Jenny Leach, Nathan Beard 1) d Dunkley Scales 4 (Rodney Galvin, Maria Starikov 2)

Dunkley – Rodney Galvin, Maria Starikov and Alma McKay. Mallee – Kym Sykes, Nathan Beard and Jenny Leach.

The opening game was between Maria and Nathan and it was a lengthy five set skirmish, with neither having a strong advantage and both playing a defensive game. In the completion, it was Maria to collect the fist Rubber.

Rod and Jen were next up and I think Jen caught Dunkley’s number one on the hop, straight up taking the first set. This trend didn’t last and as much as Jen threw out there, Rod had the answer and got his team their second Rubber.

Alma has made some headway with her game over the past few weeks, but it was never going to be a winner for her, when she was facing Kym.

Maria and Rod went down to Kym and Jen in the first Doubles, quite quickly, which was surprising, as they had both won their opening singles. This leveled the scores to two each.

Rod has the experience and skills and Nathan has a tricky game and this led to and exciting five set match, with ongoing rallies. Rod did get the better of Mallee’s number two, but Nathan pulled out so many fantastic shot.

Maria worked put up her wall in the first set against Kym, pocketing the opening set, but it was the complete opposite in the following three, with Kym winning with ease.

Jen took things a little easy with Alma, giving her the chance to learn, but made sure of the win, in three.

Kym and Nathan had a clean sweep over Rod and Alma in the last Doubles, with their three set win being their fifth Rubber.

Rod was totally baffled by Kym’s serves and cuts and couldn’t get his game together, which handed the nights victory to Mallee.

Alma was unable to work out Nathan’s game, with a very fast three set win, but she did managed some fine serves.

The final match saw Maria fighting it out with Jen, but Dunkley’s number two didn’t have to expend too much energy, with an overwhelming win again, leaving Jen to find a way to get the next win.

WINNER : Mallee Meats  7  to  Dunkley Scales  4.
