The school holiday break did not appear to affect the standard of play in round six matches of the Sunraysia Table Tennis Pennant. There were several top-class singles matches particularly five setters including the victory by Rohan Reimers over Arhuang Lau, Ed Hung defeating fill in Kevin Johns, Wayne Carmichael snatching victory from the jaws of defeat over niece Kate Carmichael. In all there were eleven five set matches. Tankard Dental number two Jason Gifkins was the player of the round winning two singles and helping his team to maintain their fourth position on the ladder while Rohan Reimers was a star for ladder leader Regional Taxation Services by winning three singles, he also played in a winning doubles.
– Regional Taxation Services 7 (Rohan Reimers 3, Jackson Tung 2) d Mallee Bearings 4 (Arhuang (Wong) Lau 2. Leon Brown, Russell Walder 1)

In the race for the Red Cliffs Club Shield the undefeated Regional Taxation Services outlasted fifth placed Mallee Bearings to win 7-4. As he did in round one Rohan Reimers scored an impressive five set victory over Bearings number one Arhuang Lau, Lau won the first two games and looked headed for victory however Reimers fought back in an impressive way defending many of Lau’s strong forehands to win 7-11 9-11 11-9 11-9 11-9. The battle for the four points was close throughout and on two occasions there were three five set matches played in succession indicating how close the contest was even though there is a separation in their positions on the ladder.
For Regional Taxation Services skipper Jackson Tung played a key role winning two singles as well as taking part in two five set doubles victories. His only blemish a five-set loss to Lau in a high class affair.
– Weightmans Packaging 8 (Wayne Carmichael 3, Mark Dorman 2, Ed Hung 1) d Cookes Pools & Spas 3 (Kate Carmichael 2, Paul Kealley 1)
By winning their fourth match in five rounds Weightmans Packaging swapped positions on the ladder with their opponents Cookes Pools & Spas. With the scores locked at three rubbers all it looked like a close result looming however Weightmans lifted in the second half winning the last five rubbers, the final four were all five setters won by Weightmans.
Included in these matches was the five set victory by Wayne Carmichael over niece Kate Carmichael. Kate took the first two games with some good play and good fortune while Wayne then narrowly won the third. In the fourth Kate raced away to a 7-1 lead forcing several errors from her uncle however not for the first time in his career Wayne was able to lift a gear and amazingly come back to win the fourth. He then took a 4-1 lead in the fifth and it looked all over however Kate fought back and in a topsy turvy match she held two match points when she led 10-8 in the fifth. Once again Wayne remained ice cool and in an excellent finish to an excellent match Wayne took the points 9-11 5-11 11-9 13-11 12-10.

Victory came with a strong team performance from the Weightmans trio with Wayne Carmichael winning three singles, Mark Dorman two and Ed Hung one, his first singles victory for the season. Weightmans won both doubles to cap off a good round.
– Tankard Dental 7 (Shannon Bowen, Reece Kurrle, Jason Gifkins 2) d Choices Flooring Mildura 4 (Jamie Kealley 3)
Tankard Dental in an even team performance proved too strong for Choices Flooring Mildura winning 7-4. Each member of the team, Shannon Bowen, Reece Kurrle and Jason Gifkins won two singles each. In particular it was the form of number three Jason Gifkins which was the major factor in picking up the four points and strengthening their fourth position on the ladder.

In the first game of the night Gifkins was able to defeat the difficult Thanh Nguyen 12-10 15-13 11-8 in a close encounter giving his team the perfect start. Later after trailing 0-2 against Marcus Cimino, Gifkins fought back impressively to win in five sets.
Victory came for Tankards despite Choices number one Jamie Kealley winning three singles for the first time this season in an impressive fashion.

Mallee Meats 6 Michael Tan (2), John Fitzpatrick (2), Deegan Kerslake (1) defeated Weightmans Packaging 5 Rasin Bhuiyan (3), Andrew Jones (1), Chris Cen (0), Andrew Kremor (0).
Despite featuring three substitute players, the matchup of Mallee Meats taking on Weightmans Packaging still delivered a tight contest, with Meats just inching by their opponents to take the win 6-5.
First up was Kerslake against the ever-patient Jones, with the former taking out the first set 11-7, Jones snatching up the second 11-5, and then Kerslake rebounding to take the third 11-9. He fought hard in the fourth set but narrowly lost 11-9, giving Jones some space to deliver the final blow in the fifth 11-4. Tan then took a clean win over Cen 11-2, 11-8, 11-4, whilst Bhuiyan defeated Fitzpatrick also in straight sets 13-11, 11-8, 11-8. Bhuiyan and Jones then scraped it out against Tan and Fitzpatrick in the first doubles, with the Weightmans duo winning the first set 11-9, just as Meats cut in by winning the next two 12-10, 11-6. But Meats couldn’t seal the deal in the last two, going down 9-11, 11-13, allowing Weightmans to stretch out their lead 3-1.

Tan and Jones then engaged in a vicious tussle, with Jones narrowly taking the first two sets 12-10, 11-9. He then hung on in the third, losing 7-11, stumbled hard in the fourth 2-11, and then missed the win by a hair in the fifth 12-14, as Tan emerged victorious. Young Kerslake proved to be no match for Bhuiyan in their game, with the No. 3 going away empty handed 11-4, 11-3, 11-3. Pennant 3 player Andrew Kremor then went up against

Fitzpatrick and after a solid effort in the first set, spiralled downward and lost 12-14, 11-1, 11-2. At this point, Weightmans were feeling confident with their 4-3 lead, but Meats threw the first of many spanners in the works by winning the second doubles match, 11-9, 13-11, 11-9, levelling it 4-4.
But Bhuiyan wasn’t done yet. He fought Tan back confidently, winning in four sets 11-8, 5-11, 11-3, 12-10, putting his team within reach of the win at 5-4. Meats, however, had other plans as Fitzpatrick got himself over the line against Jones, winning 11-9, 16-18, 11-7, 11-8. With the score now 5-5, it was up to either Kerslake or Cen to win the night for their respective teams. Kerslake struck first, winning the first set 11-6, Cen met the challenge and won the second 11-5, and as the two tussled in the last two sets, Kerslake found the edge he needed and won 11-8, 11-9.
Final score 6 rubbers to 5 and 23 games to 19.
Choices Flooring Mildura 6 Therese Fitzpatrick (2), Josh Arnold (2), Shiva Rottela (2) defeated Pinnacle Packers 5 Duy Truong (3), Peter Midgley (0), Steve Parker (0).
A tight contest in round 6 between Choices Flooring and Pinnacle Packers who sit at second and third on the ladder respectively. Packers did all they could, but Choices Flooring seemingly have their eye on the top of the ladder and they may well get there if they can maintain this level of skill and tenacity.

To start the evening, Choices Flooring pulled off not one, but two wins coming from two to nil down. First, Arnold started off shakily against Midgley, losing 2-11, 8-11, but then he strapped himself in and got it done 11-6, 11-6, 11-6. Then captain Fitzpatrick found herself 2 sets down in a what was a solid start from No. 3 Parker,
5-11, 8-11, but he let her slip through his fingers as he struggled to make any headway in the last three sets, going down 11-3, 11-9, 11-8. Unfortunately, Choices Flooring’s third player Rottela failed to cause any kind of upset in his game against the impressive Truong, and he lost in three sets 11-9, 11-5, 11-2. The night’s first doubles would then level the score to 2 games apiece with the Packers duo getting the job done 11-9, 12-10, 11-3.

Fitzpatrick stood firm against the experienced Midgley, defeating him in three sets 11-7, 11-9, 11-6, whilst her teammate Arnold wrestled with Truong for five. He took out the first set 11-7, Truong the second 11-4, Arnold then seized the third 11-5, but Truong seemingly figured him out, emerging triumphant in the end, 11-6, 11-8. With the score still level at 3-3, Rottela took his first win for the night by besting Parker 6-11, 11-5, 11-9, 11-7, and afterwards went into the second doubles with teammate Fitzpatrick. Their opponents Truong and Parker would prove a better fighting force as it would turn out with them taking the win 11-7, 13-11, 11-3, as the night inched along at 4 rubbers to 4.
Fitzpatrick and Truong then clashed, the latter winning the first 11-8, and then Fitzpatrick coming out of nowhere with a double-punch win, 11-9, 11-9. She would, however, lose focus and falter in the fourth set, losing 3-11, and in the fifth she grappled against Truong but came up short, 11-13. Rottela then took on Midgley and it looked like all was lost in the opening sets with Midgley winning 11-6, 12-10. Rottela then called on all his strength going into the third and pulled off a close win 12-10. He gained further momentum in the fourth, beating Midgley back 11-3, and then delivered the killing blow in the fifth with a 12-10 win. The ever-level scoreboard read 5-5 as Arnold and Parker stepped up to the table whilst their teammates waited with bated breath. Parker brought his A-game, but Arnold stood his ground, taking a clean victory 11-8, 11-8, 11-5.
Final score 6 rubbers to 5 and 22 games to 22.

– Cookes Pools & Spas 9 (Peter Fitzpatrick 3, Koby Grace, Yen Hwak 2) d Regional Taxation Services 2 (Andrew Kremor 2)
Cookes Pools & Spas delivered a commanding performance in Round 6 of the Winter Pennant Three competition, defeating Regional Taxation Services in a convincing 9 rubbers to 2 result.
From the outset the ladder leaders , set the tone with strong singles performances across the board. Peter Fitzpatrick led the charge, proving difficult to stop with a series of composed and consistent wins. Koby Grace backed him up brilliantly, showcasing control and precision to secure two singles victories, while Yen Hwak added further depth with some solid contributions in both singles and doubles. This was a real even team performance against a side who match up well against Cookes.

Regional Taxation Services fought hard, with skipper Andrew Kremor leading the way winning two singles while Brenden Johnson tried hard in an entertaining five setter versus Koby Grace, Brenden took the first two games which featured some strong forehand winners however Koby was able to steady and go on to a commendable victory. Curtis Crabtree also battled throughout the night but found the opposition tough to contain.
The doubles encounters further highlighted Cookes’ dominance, as their combinations worked seamlessly to extend the margin. Their ability to capitalise on key points and maintain pressure proved too much for Regional Taxation Services. RTS will look at this match as a hiccup and will look to bounce back next round.
At the conclusion of play, Cookes Pools & Spas finished strongly with 9 rubbers and 29 games, comfortably ahead of Regional Taxation Services on 2 rubbers and 12 games.

For the victors skipper Peter Fizpatrick was in top form winning three singles as well as taking part in both doubles successes while team mates Koby Grace and Yen Hwak won two singles each.
A comprehensive win for Cookes Pools & Spas, who look to be building strong form as the season progresses.

– Exposed Signage/Apparel 6 (Hayden Wilson 2, Chris Cen, Karly Leach 1) d Weightmans Packaging 5 (Sabrina Fitzpatrick 3, Nhat Dat 2)
In contrast to the previous match this was a thriller with some unusual twists.
These two teams delivered a closely fought contest, with Exposed Signage/Apparel securing a narrow 6 rubbers to 5 victory over Weightmans Packaging.

The night was competitive right from the opening matches, with both sides trading early wins. For Weightmans fill in Sabrina Fitzpatrick led strongly, picking up three singles wins, a tough four setter over Karly Leach, a straight sets win over Hayden Wilson while she recorded an impressive five set victory over the talented Chris Cen. Chris took a two games to one lead however Sabrina with her never say die attitude fought back to win impressively 8-11 12-10 4-11 11-8 11-7 a great contribution by Sabrina. Nhat Dat also played a crucial role for Weightmans winning two singles.

On the Exposed side, it was number three player Hayden Wilson who was the standout and the match winner, he delivered a strong performance defeating opposing number one Nhat Dat in a tremendous five set battle, the final score line 6-11 13-11 9-11 11-2 14-12 an impressive win against a talented opponent. Hayden later teamed up with Karly Leach to win the second doubles and give his team a 5-3 lead. From here Weightmans Packaging fought back to level at five rubbers all and again it was Hayden who stood up for his team defeating fill in Tom Gilmour to secure the valuable four points for his team when the scores were locked at five rubbers all.
Teammates Karly and Chris had chipped in with a singles each however it was Hayden who played the key role.
In the end, it was Weightmans inability to win a doubles which proved to be the difference. A hard-fought contest from both sides, but Exposed walk away with the win in the closest match of the round.

PENNANT FOUR:
Everyone was up and running after the School Holiday break, raring to get back to the Table.
It was unfortunate to see quite a few fill-in’s again this week, making life difficult for the selection committee.

There were some exciting matches throughout the night, with three five set encounters in the Tankard V Weightmans battle.
Lets start with the above match and see who the victory fell to.
– Tankard Dental 6 (Darren Bottams, Tom Gilmour 3, Raylee Waugh 1) d Weightmans Packaging 5 (Glenn Leeson 3, Jakob Grzan 1)
Tankard – Tom Gilmour, Darren Bottams and Jake Hines (Fill in – Raylee Waugh). Weightmans – Glenn Leeson, Jakob Grzan and Conner Burnett.
The first set of Singles swayed heavily to Tankards team, with Jakob giving it his very best, but just short of grabbing a game from Darren, in the three set tussle.
Tom made short work of Conner, pulling out some of his tricky shots, to bring an early end to the match.
Raylee started off well against Glenn, but it didn’t take long for him to get into the groove, playing some very cagy shots, which baffled Tankards fill in.
The first Double saw all four players contesting the game with total concentration, pushing the whole way for an exhilarating five sets, with Tom and Darren, up against Glenn and Jakob, which in the end fell to Tankard, in a 13/11 last game.

Jakob once again stood tall when he faced Tom, snatching a game from the aggregate leader and taking him out to 12/10 in another. Tom’s experience got him over the line in a four set wrangle.
This now had Tankard sitting with a 3 to 1 buffer, placing Weightman’s under pressure to come up with a few quick wins.
Who else would you expect to put their best foot, or should we say hand forward to give their team some breathing space, as Weightmans number one, Glenn Leeson. Although it must be said, it wasn’t the easiest of challenges, with Darren getting very close in each of the four games, before Glenn marked up a much needed Rubber for his team.
Conner and Raylee had a ding dong match, which lasted the five sets, with two going to 12/10. Raylee turned up the heat in the last two sets to increase the pressure on Weightmans and leave them with no other option, but to win all four remaining matches.
The last Doubles was a doozy, with Tom and Raylee, facing Glenn and Conner. The first set was a see sawing contest, landing Weightmans the first win on 13/11. The next two were also close, with the third set 12/11 to Tankard, but it was Glenn and Conner who took control to pull in another Rubber for their team.

The gap was slowly closing, with Tankard still two ahead, the weight was on Glenn’s shoulders. These two usually go the distance in their matches, but this time Weightman’s Captain seized the opportunity to give his team a chance at victory, with a clean three set win, over Tom. This gave Glenn his third Singles win for the night.
Would this be the crunch game, as Jakob and Raylee now had the pressure on them. Raylee forced Jakob to 12/10 in the second set, but this time it was youth over experience, with Jakob completing the job in three sets, to bring everything back to level. A tremendous come back from Weightmans, with both teams now sitting on 5 each.
Darren and Conner had everything riding on their shoulders now. In the end Conner’s game didn’t stand up to the know how of Darren and Tankard marked up their sixth Rubber and the overall win for the night.
WINNER : Tankard Dental 6 to Weightmans Packaging 5.
GAMES : 21 to 20.
– Mallee Meats 8 (Kym Sykes 3, Ildi Healy 2, Jenny Leach 1) d Dunkley Scales 3 (Rodney Galvin 2, Maria Starikov 1)
Dunkley – Rodney Galvin, Maria Starikov and Andrew Jeffries (Fill in – Alma).
Mallee – Kym Sykes, Nathan Beard (Fill in – Ildi Healy) and Gary Leach (Fill in – Jenny Leach).

Each of the first three Singles were completed in three sets, with Jenny putting together a win against Andrew in the first match.
The opening set in Rod and Ildi’s Match was a rip snorter, with Rod under pressure all the way in the 14 /12 game, before Rod turned up the gas to take the Rubber.
Although Maria played very well in the first set against Kym, he had control of the match and took a three set win.
This was bound to be a great fight, with Rod and Maria battling it out against Kym and Ildi. The first and third sets were filled with Rallies and both fell to Mallee after a 12/10 and 14/12 finish. Dunkley did snatch the second set, but the final score landed Mallee the Rubber.
It was a good start for Mallee now having a three Rubber lead, but Rod had Jen in his sights, which was pretty much a one sided skirmish. Not that Jen was disappointed with the way she played, but Rod had the wood on her, right from the start.
Alma really didn’t stand a show against Mallee’s Captain, Kym, as he reads the shots very well. It was over quickly for Alma with Kym marking up his second Singles win.

Ildi was back from a break and was on fire with her game. Maria would have normally had a better ending, but Ildi took command and grabbed a fifth Rubber for Mallee.
Rod and Alma now had the very hard task, of staying in the game, with Mallee only needing one more Rubber. Kym and Jen saw the opportunity to pick up a good win and pushed their focus levels up a notch. It was a three set victory and one that Mallee needed.
Rod has a lot of experience and plays an excellent game, but on this occasion, he met his match. Kym has been improving with every week and this was no exception, he put his mind to winning and made it look easy, doing it in three sets and marking up his third Singles win.
Maria and Jen make a habit of battling it out for five sets and it was no different this time. Jen snuck in and grabbed the first set, but in a close tussle, Maria took the following two. It was an easy win in the fourth for Jen, but life wasn’t meant to be easy and Maria stood her ground and pocketed the final set 12/10.
In the last match for the night, Ildi didn’t find it hard to pencil in Mallee’s eighth Rubber, when she came up against Alma, ending the night in three sets.
