– Regional Taxation Services 7 (Matt Ljubic 3, Jamie Kealley 2, Thanh Nguyen 1) d Cookes Pools & Spas 4 (Jackson Tung 2, Paul Kealley 1)

The two Kealleys stepped up to the table at a time when Cooke’s trailed 4-5 and when Paul won the first game and then the third his team mates were thinking , could they level at five rubbers all and potentially cause a boil over by defeating the ladder leader.
Both players possess powerful forehands , Paul a leftie and Jamie a right hander. Spectators witnessed an outstanding match with both players retrieving some ferocious forehands.

Seventeen year old Jamie has had a very consistent season however stumbled against his father when they last met, this time it proved to be a different result. Despite Paul having his chances in the fourth it was Jamie that held his nerve winning 7-11 11-9 8-11 12-10 13-11 , what a win. With this victory Jamie banked the four points for RTS and they now sit at the head of the ladder sixteen points clear of second place.
As they have done several times this season the RTS trio of Matt Ljubic, Jamie Kealley and Thanh Nguyen won three , two and one singles respectively. They are certainly hot favourites to go all the way this season.

– Mallee Bearings 7 (Arhuang (Wong) Lau 3, Mark Dorman, Lee Leeson 1) d Tankard Dental 4 (Kate Carmichael, Edi Re 2)

Mallee Bearings ensured they retained second place on the ladder with a solid 7-4 victory over fifth team Tankard Dental.

Losing both doubles was costly for Tankards while Bearings skipper Arhuang Lau again showed excellent form winning three singles including a straight sets victory over Kate Carmichael.

The highlight match in this contest was a five setter won by Tankard fill in Edi Re over the experienced Mark Dorman. It was no surprise when Dorman took a two games to one lead however Re who has shown a big improvement since he began last season was able to level at two games all . He then was able to grab the initiative in the fifth and maintain the edge to go on and win 7-11 9-11 3-11 11-7 11-5.

– Weightmans Packaging 7 (Shannon Bowen 3, Reece Kurrle 2, Lee Leeson 1) d Choices Flooring Mildura 4 (Wayne Carmichael 2, Marcus Cimino 1)

With a further 7-4 result, third placed Weightmans Packaging proved too consistent for sixth placed Choices Flooring Mildura who battled hard but could not match Weightmans strong finish. With the scores at four rubbers all the Choices combination of Wayne Carmichael and fill in Marcus Cimino had just defeated Weightmans pair Shannon Bowen and Lee Leeson in four sets to give the Choices trio a chance of victory.
Weightmans then ignited when skipper Shannon Bowen started strongly against aggregate leader Wayne Carmichael and closed this match out in three sets. This was Bowen’s best win for the season and the fourth occasion he has won three singles.

Buoyed by Bowen’s excellent win Weightmans went on to win the remaining two singles in a strong finish.
With one round to play before the finals is he peaking just at the right time?
Bowen’s team mates Reece Kurrle and Lee Leeson showed good support winning two and one singles respectively.

Despite his singles loss to Bowen, Wayne Carmichael looks set to win the singles aggregate for the umpteenth time as he leads Matt Ljubic by three with one round to play.

Mallee Meats 7 Jason Gifkins (2), Harry Gujral (3), James Jarvis (1) defeated Choices Flooring Mildura 4 Ashley Morrison (2), Sony Sefer (1), Andrew Jones (0)

Ladder leaders Mallee Meats took another victory in round 15 despite captain Gifkins losing his match against opposite No.1 Morrison. Luckily for him, his No. 2 Gujral picked up the slack and won his three singles matches.

Fill-in Sefer took the first game of the night, defeating Jarvis in three 11-7, 11-8, 11-4. Gifkins then dispatched Jones in straight sets 11-6, 11-4, 11-5 while Gujral fought tooth and nail against Morrison in a gripping five setter. Gujral took the first set 11-8 but Morrison got the upper hand and took the next two 12-10, 11-5. Gujral then called on all his strength and came back to win the last two sets 11-7, 11-2. Gujral was then embroiled in another five setter in the first doubles match alongside teammate Gifkins. Opponents Choices Flooring won the first set 11-4, but Meats fired up and won the next two 11-8, 11-9. Choices Flooring struck back by winning the fourth 11-6, but Meats ultimately came through in the fifth winning 12-10.

Gifkins brought the score to 4-1 in his favour by defeating Sefer in straight sets 11-8, 13-11, 11-7. Morrison, after a slow start, took down Jarvis in four sets 7-11, 11-7, 12-10, 11-7.

Gujral kept the ball rolling for his team by besting Jones, again in straight set 11-4, 11-8, 11-7; the score now 5-2. Choices Flooring then had themselves a short-lived comeback wherein they won the second doubles against Meats 11-7, 11-4, 6-11, 12-10 and skipper Morrison toppled Gifkins in their match, winning 11-4, 8-11, 14-12 11-7. Unfortunately, teammate Sefer could do little against Gujral and he lost in three 7-11, 7-11, 9-11 granting Meats the win at 6-4. In the last match, Jarvis duked it out against Jones, the pair taking the game to five sets with Jarvis just barely winning 6-11, 11-8, 11-5, 6-11, 13-11.

Final score 7 rubbers to 4 and 24 games to 18.

Weightmans Packaging 7 John Fitzpatrick (3), Sony Sefer (1), Thereses Fitzpatrick (1) defeated Cookes Pools & Spas 4 Quentin Clark (0), Duy Truong (2), Michael Tan (2)

Weightmans recovered well from their loss in round 14 by claiming victory in round 15, giving Cookes a hard time which resulted in No. 1 Clark getting zero singles wins. His teammate No. 3 Tan however was firing on all cylinders, winning two singles and taking opposing captain Fitzpatrick to five sets in their match.

The first match was Thereses Fitzpatrick versus Truong with the latter taking the game after four sets 11-5, 11-9, 10-12, 11-9. Tan then looked to score big against John Fitzpatrick, taking the game to five sets but faltering at the end. Fitzpatrick won the first 11-6, Tan got the second and third 13-11, 11-9, then Fitzpatric took the last two 12-10, 11-8. Clark then lost the first of his three singles, going down to Sefer after a brief struggle 6-11, 11-13, 11-13. Weightmans then marked down their third rubber after the night’s first doubles, besting Cookes in four sets 11-3, 10-12, 11-9, 11-6.

The score 3-1 to Weightmans, Cookes needed to strike hard in these next few games if they were going to get ahead. Truong went up against John Fitzpatrick and after losing the first two sets 8-11, 12-14, came back and won the third and fourth 11-8, 11-7. It was anyone’s game as they went into the decider with Fitzpatrick just clenching the win 11-8. What followed was the upset game of the evening wherein Therese Fitzpatrick took down Clark in a riveting five-setter. Clark won the first set 11-9 then Fitzpatrick fired back by winning the next two 11-7, 11-9. Clark levelled the score by winning the fourth 11-5 but Fitzpatrick fought on and won, a narrow 12-10 in the fifth. Up next was yet another five-setter, this time Sefer taking on Tan. The former took the first set 11-5, Tan the second 11-6, Sefer got himself ahead in the third and won 11-4 but Tan got away from him in the last two sets, winning 11-7, 11-6. The score was now 5-2 in Weightmans’ favour as John and Therese Fitzpatrick teamed up for the second doubles which they won confidently in straight sets 11-6, 11-8, 11-3, gaining their sixth rubber.

Captain Clark had seemingly run out of puff this evening, going down in straight sets to John Fitzpatrick 11-6, 11-8, 11-3. Despite the score now 7-2, teammates Truong and Tan managed to get themselves another win each. Truong struggled against Sefer and won in three 11-7, 13-11, 19-17 and Tan downed Therese Fitzpatrick also in straight sets 11-9, 12-10, 11-9.

Final score 7 rubbers to 4 and 24 games to 19.

PENNANT THREE:

Two close 6-5 results this round with several five setters taking place. Top team Weightmans Packaging just pipped third placed Regional Taxation Services while second placed Exposed Signage/Apparel proved too good for Sammy’s Slammers just. This is the third round in succession that the Slammers have just missed out on the four points.

Nhat Dat appears to be safe in the singles aggregate race. With one round to play he is 3 clear of teammate Steve Parker and four ahead of Deegan Kerslake.

– Weightmans Packaging 6 (Steve Parker 3, Nhat Dat 2) d Regional Taxation Services 5 (Sam Campbell 2, Sabrina Fitzpatrick, Hayden Wilson 1)

This was an excellent contest with first placed Weightmans Packaging having to play at their best to hold off third placed Regional Taxation Services. The result was a narrow 6-5 win to the top team however what a battle it was.

Two five setters virtually decided the result and they were played in succession. The first was an outstanding singles match with “Consistent” Steve Parker outlasting Sabrina Fitzpatrick after Sabrina had taken a two game to nil lead by playing her usual steady style forcing Steve into errors.

Steve has enjoyed a good season, and he fought hard to grab the third after many long rallies and again the fourth and fifth went on and on and in the end, Steve was able to prevail 7-11 5-11 11-7 12-10 13-11 a great comeback. Sabrina had given her all had played well.

The next game was the first doubles with Steve partnered by Nhat Dat up against Sabrina and Sam Campbell, again Regional Taxation Services had the opportunity to win this match when the girls took a two games to one lead and again Weightmans were able to recover and come back to win in five sets 12-10 7-11 9-11 11-8 11-8. Both teams had played well which is indicated in the score line. Weightmans now had taken a 3-1 lead before RTS recovered to level the match winning the next two matches. First it was Nhat up against Sam and Sam was impressive winning in four sets against the aggregate leader while Sabrina then accounted for Raj Gujral 11-3 11-9 11-8. Raj had come into the Weightmans team to fill in for Leo Parker who was out injured. He hasn’t played comp for some time however he played well to put the pressure on Sabrina.

Regional Taxation Services kept persisting and the second doubles was important in the fight for the four points. RTS pair Sam and Hayden Wilson combined well to account for Nhat and Raj in four sets 11-6 7-11 11-9 11-7 and now the scores were level at four rubbers all.

The two captains met next with Nhat just able to hold the advantage over Sabrina winning 11-9 11-8 11-8, the scores revealing a close tussle had taken place, this match was followed by Weightmans Steve defeating Sam in another top-class match. Steve was able to blunt the strong forehands from Sam and went on to bank the four points with a 11-8 11-7 8-11 12-10 victory. Steve had been the player of the match winning three singles and the one doubles he played in.

RTS three Hayden Wilson improved the scoreline when he outpointed Raj in three sets. Despite the loss RTS will be buoyed by how close they were against the top team. They will think back and rue those two five set losses, if only we had got one!!!!

Winner: Weightmans Packaging 6 d Regional Taxation Services 5

Games: 20 to 21

– Exposed Signage/Apparel 6 (Karly Leach 3, Deegan Kerslake 2) d Sammy’s Slammers 5 (Sam Campbell 2, Ryan Hensgen, Yen Hwak 1)

Was this a case of déjà vu for the Slammers, for the past three rounds they have been on the wrong side of the 6-5 scoreline and this was no different, they had again been brave in defeat.

Second placed Exposed Signage/Apparel had been too steady with skipper Karly Leach again in good form winning three singles for the second round in succession. In this contest there had been only one five setter, and this virtually decided the four points. Exposed Signage/Apparel pair Karly and Deegan Kerslake were up against Ryan Hensgen and fill in Sam Campbell. Sam had come in to the team replacing Koby Grace who was unwell. She had a busy night playing for her own team as well,

Back to the doubles match, this was a beauty. Karly and Deegan have combined well over this season and started as favourites however Ryan and Sam were having none of that. The Exposed pair grabbed the first two games however Ryan and Sam struck back to narrowly take the third and fourth by the barest of margins, this had turned out to be a thriller and the fifth was close all the way. In the end it was Karly and Deegan who took the points 11-8 11-8 11-13 11-13 11-9 what a match. An unusual statistic from this was that Karly and Deegan had five scores of 11!!!

In the next match Karly took her team to a 4-1 lead by defeating Sam in three sets and it looked how far to the Exposed team however the Slammers finished solidly winning four of the last six matches to fall just one rubber short. Fill in Sam played well to win two singles including a four-set defeat of Deegan who has enjoyed a successful season.

Sammy Slammers number three Yen Hwak played his role by defeating opposing number three fill in Dave Tanner in four sets and earlier combining with skipper Ryan Hensgen to win the second doubles.

For the victors along with Karly winning three singles, Deegan Kerslake won two and as reported earlier they combined for the very important first doubles success.

One round to play before the finals campaign, it could be very interesting.

PENNANT FOUR:

There would have been some head aches for the master of fill in’s this round, with 5 out of the 12 players away, which required five fill in’s and that was in Pennant four alone. Hats off to Gav, for the work he does in this area.

The first encounter was between the top team, Tankard Dental and the bottom team, Dunkley Scales, which was a thriller, with Tankard needing two fill in’s, which put the pressure on them right from the start.

– Tankard Dental 6 (Leanne Wilson 3, Helen Wall 1) d Dunkley Scales 5 (Maria Starikov, Wendy Simpson 2, Jake Hines 1)

Tankard : Leanne Wilson, Ildi Healy (Fill in – Helen Wall) and Jakob Grzan (Fill in – Andrew Jeffries). Dunkley : Maria Starikov, Jen Leach (Fill in – Wendy Simpson) and Jake Hines.

The number one players faced off in the opening match and as hard as Maria tried, Leanne seemed to have the secret to halting her game, which amounted in a Rubber to Tankard (11/8, 11/6, 11/9) Andrew and Jake had a very strange clash, where the looser of each game produced 8 points in every set, not something you see every day. Andrew took the advantage winning the first two sets, but Jake did a great job, coming back to grab the next three (8/11, 8/11, 11/8, 11/8, 11/8). Wendy’s experience was way too much for Helen to cope with, making it a fast three setter (11/1, 11/5, 11/3).

The first Doubles turned out to be a ripper, with Maria and Wendy putting together a comfortable win in the first two , but the last three sets were extremely close, with the Rubber falling to Leanne and Helen, which evened up the score (9/11, 6/11, 12/10, 14/12, 11/9).

Maria left with the bragging rights in her match against Andrew, with the last set something Andrew is trying hard to forget (11/4, 11/9, 11/0). Wendy snuck a set from Leanne, but that was it, Tankard’s number one put the foot down and made sure of the win (11/8, 11/8, 4/11, 11/6). Helen and Jake had a good tussle, in an even match, which went the way of Tankard, to put them one up (11/9, 8/11, 11/6, 11/9).

The combination of Leanne and Andrew was definitely too much for Maria and Jake to handle, with the three sets adding to Tankards list (11/7, 11/7, 11/4).

Wendy gave Dunkley some breathing space, with a four set winner against Andrew and another last set he would rather forget (11/7, 11/2, 11/13, 11/0).  Dunkley’s Captain, Maria played well against Helen to make it 5 each, with the last match to decide the outcome (11/5, 11/2, 11/4). Jake put together an amazing fight against Leanne, doing his very best to get a win for his team, forcing the match to five sets, but Leanne has that ability to find a winning way, which allowed Tankard to mark up another well deserved win for the night (7/11, 8/11, 11/6, 11/2, 11/9).

WINNER : Tankard Dental  6  Dunkley Scales 5.

GAMES : 21  to 21 (You couldn’t get much closer).

– Weightmans Packaging 9 (Eddy Parker 3, Tom Gilmour, Glenn Leeson 2) d Mallee Bearings 2 (Curtis Crabtree 2)

Weightman’s : Glenn Leeson, Gary Leach (Fill in – Tom Gilmour) and Eddy Parker. Mallee : Curtis Crabtree, Nathan Beard and Conner Burnett (Fill in – Jake Hines).

Weightman’s flew out of the blocks in the first set of singles, with Eddy and Glenn ripping through their matches in three sets, Eddy against Jake (11/7, 11/1, 11/6) and Glenn against Nathan (12/10, 11/3, 11/7). Curtis pulled Mallee back into the game when he grabbed a Rubber, after facing Tom, but it wasn’t an easy win, with Tom taking the first set and making it hard work for Curtis (7/11, 11/9, 11/7, 7/11, 11/4).

The first Doubles was also pushed to the max, with Glenn and Tom stealing the first two sets and Curtis and Nathan battling their way back in the following two to bring the match back to even. But the Mallee pairing couldn’t hold on and were defeated in the last set (11/8, 11/9, 8/11, 8/11, 11/4).

With Jake playing for two teams on the night, he was going to find it testing to keep up the energy levels. Glenn used his experience to take the win (11/3, 11/7, 11/7). Eddy had his eye on the ball when he came up against Curtis, only dropping one set to give Weightman’s their fifth Rubber, meaning Mallee had to hold onto every match now to get the win (5/11, 11/9, 11/8, 11/9). Nathan is usually puts up a very defensive game, but Tom usually has a very tricky game and in this match, the tricks were too much to deal with, giving Weightman’s the victory (11/5, 11/3, 12/10).

Although they had the win, Weightman’s kept the pressure on in the Doubles to increase their lead. Glenn and Eddy far too strong for Curtis and Jake (11/3, 11/4, 11/6).

Curtis didn’t drop the batten for Mallee, pulling out a good win against Glenn in four sets (5/11, 11/4, 11/8, 11/7). Tom and Eddy cleaned up the last two matches, both completing three set wins. Tom against Jake (11/4, 11/1, 11/4) and Eddy against Nathan (11/4, 11/7, 11/2).

WINNER : Weightman’s Packaging  9  Mallee Meats  2.
