ROUND 4

PENNANT ONE:

With fill in Shannon Bowen in top form Mallee Bearings have moved to the top of the Sunraysia Table Tennis ladder after four rounds of play.

– Mallee Bearings 6 (Shannon Bowen 3, Reece Kurrle 1) d Tankard Dental 5 (Thanh Nguyen, Rohan Reimers 2, Paul Kealley 1)

Bowen despite not playing regularly for some time showed what a talent he is by winning three singles and taking part in both doubles victories in Mallee Bearings’ 6-5 win over the now second placed Tankard Dental who were brave in defeat.

The second doubles proved to be the difference when Bowen teamed with Quentin Clark to defeat Thanh Nguyen and Paul Kealley 10-15 15-12 15-6.

For Tankard Dental both Nguyen and Rohan Reimers continued their consistent season by winning two singles each however the doubles proved to be the factor in this result.

– Regional Taxation Services 7 (Jackson Tung, Leon Brown, Ashley Morrison 2) d Cookes Pools & Spas 4 (Kate Carmichael 3)

Regional Taxation Services with a 7-4 victory over Cookes Pools & Spas have moved in to the top four for the first time. In an even team performance Jackson Tung, Leon Brown and Ash Morrison all won two singles while Tung and Brown combined to win their doubles.

The highlight of this match was the form of RTS number three Ash Morrison as his form proved to be the match winner for his team. With the match score at three rubbers all Morrison showed his best form for the season defeating the talented Jackson Murphy 14-16 18-16 15-12 in a marathon. He later accounted for Lee Leeson in straight sets to bank the four points for his team.

For Cookes Pools & Spas Kate Carmichael played a lone hand winning her three singles. Her tussle with opposing skipper Jackson Tung was a highlight, Carmichael winning 9-15 17-15 15-11 in an entertaining match.

– Weightmans Packaging 6 (Gavin Carmichael 3, Andrew Cannard 2) d Max Miller Carpets 5 (Leon Brown 2, Liam Wood, Ed Hung 1)

In the remaining match Weightmans Packaging just outlasted Max Miller Carpets to win 6-5, for the victors Gavin Carmichael and Andrew Cannard won three and two singles respectively.

The second doubles was a major factor in the result with Carmichael and partner Russell Walder recovering after losing the first game to defeat fill in Leon Brown and Ed Hung 12-15 15-12-15-9.

PENNANT TWO:

Weightmans Packaging remain undefeated and maintain their spot at the top of the ladder, but had a real “get out of gaol” win this round; Max Miller Carpets seem to get all the good bounces to down Mallee Meats; and Mallee Bearings had what can only be described as a disastrous night losing eleven love to Pinnacle Packers.

– Weightmans Packaging 6 (Jeremy Corrin, Shaun Gifford 2, Therese Fitzpatrick 1) d Cookes Pools & Spas 5 (Kevin Johns 2, Luca Capizzoto, Marita Grace 1)

You always know you are in for a close game if one of your opponents is Kevin Johns.

For the first four rubbers, Kev’s Cookes Pools & Spas team made every post a winner, number two Luca Capizzoto outlasted Therese Fitzpatrick to win in three sets 16-18, 15-12, 15-8, Marita Grace caused the upset of the night when she defeated the slow starting Weightmans Packaging captain Jeremy Corrin also in three sets 15-13, 15-17, 15-13, and Johns himself downed the much improved Shaun Gifford in two sets. Then the doubles rubber which followed went to Johns and Capizzoto, a straightforward two sets to love win against Corrin and Gifford.

Two rubbers later, and Cookes Pools and Spas were, if they were not before, certainly in the driver’s seat. Weightmans Packaging picked up their first win for the night, Corrin defeated Capizzoto, but then Johns made it five rubbers to one when he had an easy two set win against Therese Fitzpatrick.

Five rubbers to go, one to get for the win, what could go wrong? Not sure if Weightmans Packaging had a team meeting or what, but it is certain that Cookes Pools & Spas must have looked on in disbelief as Weightmans reeled off the next FIVE rubbers to steal the win from them.

Gifford defeated the giant killing Marita Grace in a good three setter 10-15, 16-14, 15-13, Corrin and Fitzpatrick clawed back another one in the second doubles, a two set win over Johns and Grace 18-16, 15-10, Corrin got his mojo back and disposed of Johns in two sets in the clash of the captains, Gifford kept his momentum going, another three set win, this time against Capizzoto 10-15 (Shaun regularly loses that first set), 16-14, 15-12, and with the eyes of the world on her (seemingly), Therese Fitzpatrick rewarded her captain with a three set win against Marita Grace 15-13, 11-15, 15-10.

Quite an extraordinary match, one which sees Weightmans Packaging still a game clear at the top of the ladder with four wins from four

matches, and Cookes Pools & Spas with one win from four matches, but with very competitive “for and againsts”.

Final scores: 6 rubbers to 5 and 14 games to 13.

– Max Miller Carpets 8 (Jamie Kealley 3, Marcus Cimino 2, Peter Fitzpatrick 1) d Mallee Meats 3 (Terry Martin 2, Tom Morrison 1)

Max Miller Carpets moved to outright second on the ladder with this commanding eight rubbers to three win over Mallee Meats.

The damage was done in the first six rubbers, as Max Miller Carpets won five of them, and any wins Mallee Meats took after that were matched by losses in the match following.

Captain Jamie Kealley started the night strongly for Max Miller Carpets with a straightforward two set win against Leon Bailey. Mallee Meats captain Terry Martin squared the ledger with a similar two set win against Peter Fitzpatrick.

Max Miller Carpets then strung together a winning run of four matches; fill-in Marcus Cimino (subbing for Jordan Cole, off fighting a fire at Hattah) had a real arm wrestle with Tom Morrison in the first set of their match, finally getting over the line 20-18. That loss by Morrison seemed to sap most of his energy as Marcus took the second set easily 15-7. Next, the first doubles and Kealley and Cimino won in three against Martin and Morrison 17-15, 7-15, 15-10. Next, the two captains played, and in a match were the winner (Kealley) won just two more points than his opponent, Max Miller Carpets moved to a four rubbers to one lead, courtesy of the 16-14, 12-15, 15-12 scoreline. Cimino made that five rubbers to one when he downed the improving Bailey. After taking the first set comfortably 15-5, Bailey made Cimino work for the result in the second. Neither player could get a lead of more than two points during the entirety of the set, and when that happened it inevitably disappeared and the scores were tied again. At fourteen all, Marcus finally got another two set break, and of course took the match 15-5, 16-14.

Mallee Meats picked up just their second win for the night in rubber number seven, Tom Morrison too good for Peter Fitzpatrick, winning 15-10, 15-10.

But Max Miller Carpets bounced straight back, Kealley and Fitzpatrick winning in just two sets, (although the second seemed like it might never

finish) against Martin and Bailey 15-8, 21-19. Max Miller Carpets really wanted to win that second set as it also gave them the win in the match.

Terry Martin won his second and his team’s third rubber for the night, a good performance against the tricky Cimino. Marcus got the first set comfortably 15-8, but Terry dug in and reversed the scores in the next two, taking them 15-8, 15-8.

Jamie Kealley and Tom Morrison had a great match, Tom took the first set 15-8, and it looked like Max Miller Carpets might finish the night with a wimper, but Jamie took the second set in similar fashion 15-8, but when Morrison led 14-10 in the third it seemed that Mallee Meats might indeed finish with a respectable score line. Kealley, however, played his usual style, and reeled off the next six points to win 16-14.

The final rubber, the two number three’s was not going to alter the result at all, but allowed Max Miller Carpets to record a commanding win, Peter Fitzpatrick defeating Leon Bailey in two sets.

Final scores: 8 rubbers to 3 and 17 games to 9.

– Pinnacle Packers 11 (Daniel Jansen, Maria He, Rasin Bhuiyan 3) d Mallee Bearings 0

A great night for Pinnacle Packers, and a disastrous one for Mallee Bearings.

Both sides were without regular players, Pinnacle Packers were missing their number three Levi Williams, and new player to the district the enthusiastic Maria He replaced Levi; Josh Arnold was unable to play for John Fitzpatrick’s side and David Sergi filled in there.

Sergi played the first rubber against Pinnacle Packers captain Daniel Jansen and lost a very competitive three setter 12-16, 16-14, 6-15.

The next five rubbers were all over in two sets, Rasin Bhuiyan played his tricky style of table tennis to flummox James Jarvis 15-9, 15-11, newcomer He in the first of her three wins showing she is clearly above pennant two standard with a dominant two set win against John Fitzpatrick 15-9, 15-7.

Jansen and Bhuiyan took the first doubles rubber, a close two setter against Fitzpatrick and Sergi 15-13, 16-14. Bhuiyan continued on his

merry way, now downing Sergi in singles 15-12, 15-13. Next, the two captains, Jansen defeating Fitzpatrick 11 and 12.

James Jarvis managed to get the first set out of Maria He 16-14, but Maria struck back in the final two 15-10, 15-10.

Fitzpatrick and Jarvis were competitive for the first set against Jansen and He, but losing 12-15, before conceding the second 8-15.

The final round of singles were once again two set affairs, Bhuiyan over Fitzpatrick 8 and 11; He defeated Sergi 11 and 7, and Jansen 8 and 8 against Jarvis.

So, the three Pinnacle Packers each won their three singles. What to make of it. Captain Daniel Jansen has come back to the game after a ten year layoff, and has spent two seasons getting to where he is now. Bhuiyan certainly has talent, however he is not unbeatable, prior to this match he had won four rubbers from nine played, so simply a good for him. Maria He … well. to come into a team without having played for some time (she has been to practise nights obviously) indicates that her grading is certainly higher than a number 3 in pennant 2. With the talent she obviously possesses, she would probably hold her own in pennant one.

Final scores: 11 rubbers to 0 and 22 games to 2.

PENNANT THREE:

Bottom side Mallee Meats inflicted the first defeat on ladder leaders Exposed Signage & Apparel, and Weightmans Packaging defeated Sammy’s Slammers in a close match six rubbers to five.

– Mallee Meats 7 (Riley Clemence 3, Nhat Dat 2, Koby Grace 1) d Exposed Signage/Apparel 4 (Sabrina Fitzpatrick 2, Steve Parker 1)

Exposed Signage & Apparel have recorded two good wins thus far,10-1 and 8-3, but this round were brought back to earth by bottom side Mallee Meats, who downed them seven rubbers to four.

After six rubbers the score was three rubbers each, Mallee Meats then took the next three to secure the win, and then won one of the final two rubbers to make the score seven rubbers to four.

Tellingly, Mallee Meats won six of the nine singles rubbers on offer. Captain Riley Clemence won three, Nhat Dat, subbing for Dave Tanner won two, and number three Koby Grace one.

In just his second season of table tennis, Clemence is proving to be a force to be reckoned with. He defeated Steve Parker 15-7, 16-14; Wendy Simpson was a bit more of a handful, but he won in three sets 15-11, 11-15, 15-12; and against opposing captain Sabrina Fitzpatrick, another two set victory 15-10, 17-15.

Dat secured wins against Parker in three sets 15-10, 17-19, 15-9 and Simpson in straight sets 17-15, 15-9.

Koby Grace continues his improvement and this round defeated Wendy Simpson 15-12, 15-10. Koby also teamed with his captain to win the second doubles against Fitzpatrick and Simpson. After a close first set 17-15, they won the second easily 15-5.

For Exposed Signage & Apparel, Sabrina Fitzpatrick performed best with two singles wins (15-2, 15-5 over Dat, and 15-4, 15-13 against Grace), and with Steve Parker won the first doubles 15-13, 18-16 in a close game.

The only other game to go the way of the ladder leaders was Steve Parker’s win against Koby Grace 15-8, 15-7.

Final scores: 7 rubbers to 4 and 14 games to 10.

– Weightmans Packaging 6 (Karly Leach, Chelsey Avers 2, Glenn Leeson 1) d Sammy’s Slammers 5 (Nick Kiapekos, Ryan Peterson 2)

A close match, in which both sides took a run of wins to accumulate their scores.

Weightmans Packaging started the contest by taking the first two rubbers – Chelsey Avers in a bruising three set win against Ryan Peterson 14-16, 15-11, 17-15, and her captain Karly Leach a two set win over Sammy’s Slammers number three Deegan Kerslake 15-4, 15-7.

Sammy’s Slammers responded with wins in the next four rubbers. Captain Nick Kiapekos needed just two sets to defeat Glenn Leeson 15-8, 15-13, in the first doubles Kiapekos and the “hungry for a win” Peterson saw off Leach and Leeson 14-16, 15-10, 15-12. Peterson, now warmed up, continued on and downed Leach 15-8, 15-12 in a fine display. His doubles partner Kiapekos played next and he easily defeated Chelsey Avers 4 and 8.

Now it was Weightmans Packaging’s turn. They won the next three rubbers to put their side ahead five rubbers to four with two to play. Leeson defeated the enthusiastic Kerslake 11 and 7, Leach and Avers comfortably defeated Kiapekos and Kerslake in the second doubles 10 and 7, and Leach won the battle of the captains, downing Kiapekos 11-15, 19-17, 15-11 in the match of the night.

Sammy’s Slammers squared the match five all when Peterson continued his rise with a two set win over Leeson 2 and 7, but Weightmans Packaging had the last say when Chelsey Avers picked up her second win, this one over Kerslake 15-5, 15-10.

Final scores: 6 rubbers to 5 and 13 games to 12

PENNANT FOUR:

Round four has seen the Teams of Tankard Dental and Dunkley Scales jump to the lead, with both producing three Wins, so far this season. Tankard is on top by a small margin, leaving Dunkley Scales in second place, followed by Mallee Meats on two Wins and Weightmans Packaging, giving it their best shot, but still awaiting their first Win.

Dunkley Scales V Weightmans Packaging :

The first Set of Singles were reasonably even, with all matches being decided in two sets. Weightmans Tom Gilmour grabbed an 18/16, 15/8 Win over Katrina Clifford, then Dunkley Scales bounced back after Brandt Dolic was a clean winner over Gary Leach 15/6, 15/5. Cetty Bonaccorso put Weightman’s back in the lead after her convincing Win against Oliver Bremner 15/8, 15/11.

The first Doubles put Dunkley into top gear, Winning four of the next five matches. Both Doubles went to three Sets, with Tom and Gary being defeated 4/15, 15/12, 16/14 by Kat and Brandt. Kat and Oliver Won their close battle with Tom and Cetty 14/16, 16/14, 15/6.

It was Gary up against Dunkley’s number one player Kat, which proved to be a hard task, with Kat’s full on smashes, giving her that match 15/10 ,15/5. Tom gave his team a little breathing space taking the match against Oliver in two Sets 15/10, 15/4, but Brandt proved to good for Cetty, bursting clear with a 15/3, 15/2 overpowering Win.

With the Matches now sitting in favor of Dunkley Scales (5 to 3), it was Gary who belted out an exciting three Set Win against Oliver 11/15, 15/11, 15/5, to bring his team back with a chance.

To the good fortune of Dunkley Scales Kat and Brandt put the pedal to the metal and sped home, winning the last two Matches. Kat defeated Cetty 15/5, 15/7 and Brandt, who is proving to be a weapon in his team, snatched his third win for the night, this time against Tom 15/11, 15/6.

Winners – Dunkley Scales 7 to Weightman’s Packaging 4 (games 15/10)

Tankard Dental V Mallee Meats :

Maria Starikov, Mallee Meats top player won a tough three set match over Tankards Curtis Crabtree to start off the night 12/15, 15/7, 16/14. The next two matches went the way of Tankard Dental, with Jen Leach doing her best to knock over Nathan Beard, but his never give-up game enabled him to come away a winner 6/15, 15/11, 15/10. Mallee Meats number three, Selma Mayne was up against the opposing number one player and struggled to keep up with Derek Hung, who won in two sets 15/10, 15/7.

Derek and Curtis proved too good for Maria and Jen in the first Doubles Match, walking away with another two set Win 15/12, 15/10, giving their team a 3 to 1 lead.

Nathan and Maria play a very similar game, both being like a Brick wall to get through, but this time Maria got the better of Nathan, powering home in two sets 15/8, 15/5. Curtis has made a big leap forward this season, playing some great winning shots. Selma made him work for his first set, but he played his second with much more confidence and took the Win 15/13, 15/5. Jen surprised herself in the next Singles, leaving with a two set victory over number one player Derek 15/8, 15/12.

The last Doubles Match saw Derek and Nathan mark up another Win for their team, bowling over Maria and Selma 15/10, 15/9. This meant Mallee Meats had to win the next match, or Tankard Dental would collect the nights Win.

All three of the Tankard Team players delivered Wins for the team in the last Singles bracket. Nathan defeated Selma 15/11, 15/9. Derek and Maria had a fantastic match, with luck falling Derek’s way 9/15, 15/12, 19/17. The last match of the night went to Curtis, in a tense two set win over Jen 15/13, 16/14.

Winners – Tankard Dental 8 to Mallee Meats 3 (games 17 to 8)
