ROUND 3
PENNANT ONE:
Close matches were the feature of round three of the Sunraysia Table Tennis Association.
– Tankard Dental 6 (Rohan Reimers, Paul Kealley 2, Thanh Nguyen 1) d Regional Taxation Services 5 (Jackson Tung, Leon Brown 2)
Tankard Dental with a 6-5 win over Regional Taxation Services have retained top position on the ladder by percentage. Victory came without the reliance on skipper Thahn Nguyen who was defeated twice however team mates Rohan Reimers and Paul Kealley were outstanding winning two singles each.
In the first match of the night Kealley started with an upset straight sets win over Leon Brown, later with the scores locked at five rubbers all Kealley recovered to defeat Ash Morrison 13-15 15-9 15-6. Kealley partnered with Nguyen to win the important second doubles which enabled his team Tankard Dental to score their second win.
– Cookes Pools & Spas 7 (Shannon Bowen 3, Jackson Murphy, Lee Leeson 1) d Max Miller Carpets 4 (Arhuang Lau, Liam Wood 2)
Cooke’s Pools and Spas proved too steady for Max Miller Carpets winning 7-4. Fill in Shannon Bowen was on fire in this match winning three singles and taking part in both doubles victories, he was subbing for Kate Carmichael who was on Victorian duties at the National Veterans Championships in Canberra. For the Carpeters both ArHuang Lau and Liam Wood won two singles,
Wood was impressive with a straight sets win over Jackson Murphy.
– Mallee Bearings 7 (Wayne Carmichael 3, Reece Kurrle 2) d Weightmans Packaging 4 (Mark Dorman 2, Andrew Cannard, Russell Walder 1)
The remaining match featured five three set contests, Mallee Bearings were able to win four of these resulting in a 7-4 win over Weightmans Packaging. Bearings skipper Wayne Carmichael with three singles is the only undefeated player in the competition. He also took part in both doubles victories each going to three sets.
Carmichael’s team mate Reece Kurrle offered good support winning two singles, his three set win over fill in Andrew Cannard was a highlight.
PENNANT TWO:
Weightmans Packaging made it three wins from three games, while Max Miller Carpets and Mallee Meats followed up from their win in the last round to record their second wins.
– Weightmans Packaging 6 (Jeremy Corrin, Shaun Gifford 2, Therese Fitzpatrick 1) d Pinnacle Packers 5 (Daniel Jansen 3, Rasin Bhuiyan 1)
Weightmans Packaging made it three wins for the season in this round, but it was a hard fought win against Pinnacle Packers.
Pinnacle Packers led five rubbers to four with two rubbers to play, but Shaun Gifford and Therese Fitzpatrick came to the rescue for Weightmans and won the final two.
In winning three singles Daniel Jansen once again had a stand-out night for Pinnacle Packers, but in his first two rubbers he had to draw on his experience to firstly defeat Therese Fitzpatrick 16-14, 13-15, 15-9, then Shaun Gifford took him to three sets too before he could win 15-10, 11-15, 15-5. Daniel and Rasin Bhuiyan won the vital first doubles in two sets against Jeremy Corrin and Gifford
Despite to losing to Jansen, Gifford still won two singles rubbers downing Levi Williams 11 and 13, and in rubbers number ten he defeated Rasin Bhuiyan 11 and 8 to level the scores at five rubbers each. Gifford is having a great start to this season, having won eight of his singles matches and currently sits equal top of the aggregate with veteran Kevin Johns.
Jeremy Corrin defeated Bhuiyan and Williams as well, but fell fairly cheaply to Jansen, 9-11, 9-11.
Therese Fitzpatrick won two important matches late in the contest … firstly she and Corrin won the second doubles rubber against Jansen and Williams. They lost the first set 11-15, but took control after that taking the final two sets 15-7, 15-10. Then with the scores locked at five rubbers all, she had to play the decider against Levi Williams. Once again Therese was on the losing end of the first set, Levi winning it 15-12, but Therese hit back 15-10, 15-12 to clinch the rubber and the match for her team.
Final scores: 6 rubbers to 5 and 15 games to 13.
– Mallee Meats 7 (Tom Morrison 3, Terry Martin 2) d Cookes Pools & Spas 4 (Kevin Johns 2, Luca Capizzoto, Marita Grace 1)
Not for the first time, Tom Morrison showed his full potential, this round leading Mallee Meats to a seven rubbers to four win over Cookes Pools & Spas.
Playing at number two for his side, Morrison had a tough first up match against Marita Grace. Morrison lost the first set 13-15 in this contest, but won the important points in the next two sets to win 15-13, 19-17. After that warm up, Tom blitzed opposing captain Kevin Johns 15-11, 15-11, and then had to survive a fired-up Luca Capizzoto in the final round of singles, winning that one 19-17, 11-15, 17-15. With his captain Terry Martin, Morrison won the first doubles against Johns and Capizzoto in dominant fashion 15-8, 15-13.
Martin was in good form too, although he won “only” two singles rubbers, a three set win against Capizzoto and a straight sets win over Marita Grace.
To cap off a good night for Mallee Meats, Martin and fill-in David Sergi took the second doubles against Johns and Grace 15-11, 15-11.
For Cookes Pools & Spas, Johns won two singles rubbers, and Capizzoto and Grace both defeated David Sergi.
Final scores: 7 rubbers to 4 and 14 games to 11.
– Max Miller Carpets 7 (Jamie Kealley, Jordan Cole 2, Andrew Kremor 1) d Mallee Bearings 4 (John Fitzpatrick, Josh Arnold 2)
Max Miller Carpets won five of the nine singles rubbers in this match, and sealed the deal with wins in both doubles.
Jamie Kealley and Jordan Cole won two singles each (Kealley over James Jarvis 15-11, 15-12 and John Fitzpatrick 15-10, 15-13, and Cole defeated Jarvis 15-9, 15-8 and later Josh Arnold in a close match that went to three sets 13-15, 15-12, 15-13). Andrew Kremor, subbing for Peter Fitzpatrick, made a welcome return and defeated Jarvis in the final rubber 15-13, 13-15, 15-10.
With Mallee Bearings picking up the other four singles rubbers, two each to John Fitzpatrick and Josh Arnold, the doubles became a most important factor in this contest. And on this occasion the Max Miller Carpets pairings had the advantage. Kealley and Cole defeated Fitzpatrick and Arnold 15-10, 15-13, and later Kealley and Kremor downed Fitzpatrick and Jarvis with an almost identical scoreline 15-9, 15-13.
For Mallee Bearings, John Fitzpatrick tasted success against Andrew Kremor, winning easily 3 and 8, and then had a closer, tighter match with Jordan Cole, but closed that match out in two sets 15-13, 16-14, but John then lost to opposing captain Jamie Kealley. Josh Arnold downed Kealley in the first round of singles 15-13, 15-10 and then Kremor 11-5, 11-7, but fell to the unpredictable Jordan Cole 15-13, 12-15, 13-15.
Mallee Bearings probably need to spend a bit of time on their doubles play, as so far they have won just one of the six doubles matches they have contested.
Final scores: 7 rubbers to 4 and 14 games to 10
PENNANT THREE:
Exposed Signage & Apparel had a big win over Regional Taxation Services, whilst Weightmans Packaging downed a gallant Mallee Meats side.

In their second match of the season, following a bye last round, Exposed Signage & Apparel followed up their ten rubbers to one win in round one with an impressive eight rubbers to three win in this round.
Once again Sabrina Fitzpatrick led the way with wins in all singles rubbers and partnering her team-mates to wins in both doubles.
Her win against Nhat Dat was impressive, after losing the first set 10-15 she held her nerve in the next two sets to take them 16-14, 15-13. Similarly, the doubles wins, although decided in two sets, were close contests. Sabrina and new number two Steve Parker held off Leo Parker and Dat to win 15-12, 18-16 and in the second doubles, Sabrina and Wendy Simpson played steadily to defeat Leo Parker and Brian White 15-13, 15-13.
Steve Parker started his time in his new team well, with three singles wins. He had comfortable wins against Brian White and his son Leo, but he had to lift his game to defeat Nhat Dat 16-14, 16-14.
A disappointing night for Regional Taxation Services as they could only get three wins, each of the players defeating Exposed Signage & Apparel number three Wendy Simpson.
Final scores: 8 rubbers to 3 and 16 games to 7.
– Weightmans Packaging 6 (Chelsey Avers 2, Glenn Leeson, Karly Leach 1) d Mallee Meats 5 (Riley Clemence 3, Dave Tanner, Koby Grace 1)
In a see-sawing match, Weightmans Packaging crept home to defeat Mallee Meats six rubbers to five.
Weightmans Packaging led three rubbers to one courtesy of wins by Glenn Leeson against a fiesty Koby Grace 15-11, 13-15, 15-10, Chelsey Avers a three set win against Dave Tanner and in the first doubles captain Karly Leach and Leeson recovered from a first set loss to defeat Dave Tanner and Riley Clemence 9-15, 16-14, 15-12.
Mallee Meats hit back, taking the next three singles rubbers, Tanner in three sets over Leeson, then in a big surprise, Koby Grace rolled Karly
Leach in a great three setter 8-15, 16-14, 15-11. Riley Clemence took the third (to go with his earlier win in three sets against Leach) against Chelsey Avers in straight sets to put his side in front for the first time in the match.
Weightmans Packaging immediately brought the scores to four all when Leach and Avers downed Clemence and Grace in a high quality doubles contest 9-15, 17-15, 16-14.
Karly put her team ahead by defeating Dave Tanner in two sets, Riley Clemence took his third for the night with a straight sets win against Leeson, and in the decider Chelsey Avers proved too good for the gallant Koby Grace, winning in two sets 15-11, 15-6.
Final scores: 6 rubbers to 5 and 15 games to 14.
PENNANT FOUR:
With players having a break over the last two weeks, due to the School Holidays, all were keen to get back in to the swing of things with their Teammates.
The first two rounds left the competition relatively even, which should leave the remaining rounds quite open.
– Mallee Meats 6 (Maria Starikov 3, Jenny Leach 2, Selma Mayne 1) d Dunkley Scales 5 (Katrina Clifford 2, Brandt Dolic 1)
Mallee Meats took control of the night in the first three matches, with the two number one players battling it out in two close sets. Maria Starikov defeating Katrina Clifford 2/0 (19/17 and 15/13). Jenny Leach took on Brant Dolic in the next match, which was decided in favor of Jenny after three tight sets 2/1 (15/9, 12/15, 15/10). The two number three players are both newbies and Oliver Bremmer put up a good fight, but was beaten in two, by Selma Mayne 2/0 (15/6, 15/13).
The first Doubles saw Dunkley Scales pick up their first win, with Kat and Brant having a convincing defeat over Maria and Jen 2/0 (15/9, 15/8).
Kat also showed her talent against Jen in the Singles grabbing another win for her team 2/0 (15/8, 15/10). Maria came back and made amends in her game against Oliver with a fine win of 2/0 (15/3, 15/6). Although Brant is in his first season of comp, he’s playing some great games and this one proved to be a winner against Selma 2/0 (15/4, 15/5).
The second Doubles match also went the way of Dunkley Scales, with Kat collecting another win, this time with Oliver, but Maria and Selma gave them a run for their money 2/0 (15/10, 15/13).
The last set of Singles started with a win by Jen, against Oliver 2/0 (15/7, 15/3) followed by Kat defeating Selma 2/0 (15/7, 15/7). This left both sides on Five wins, which meant the last game, would decide the winner of the night.
Maria and Brant had a good tussle, which went to three close Sets. Brant took the first 15/9, but Maria stayed focused and pulled in the last two 2/1 (15/13 and 15/12) to give Mallee Meats a final score of 6/5 (12/12) to be the winners.
– Tankard Dental 8 (Curtis Crabtree 3, Derek Hung 2, Nathan Beard 1) d Weightmans Packaging 3 (Tom Gilmour 2, Cetty Bonaccorso 1)
The first game of the night against the two number one’s, went the way of Tom Gilmour, with both putting up a good contest, with a 2/0 win, over Derek Hung (15/12, 15/12). Gary Leach and Curtis Crabtree had a ding dong battle, which went to three Sets, after which Curtis came away the winner 2/1 (15/11 15/17, 15/8). Cetty Bonaccorso, just back from her trip to Italy, with Husband Luca, made a very positive start to the season, with her first Win, defeating Nathan Beard 2/0 (15/12 and 15/13).
Tom and Gary paired up, hoping for a victory in the first Doubles, but Tankards, Derek and Curtis were just a bit too strong, winning in three Sets 2/1 (15/17, 15/9, 15/12).
Derek was a bit tricky for Gary, after a two Setter fell the way of Derek 2/0 (15/6, 15/7), making it three wins for Tankard Dental. Tom’s three sets win against Nathan, 2/1 (14/16, 15/9, 15/9) brought the night back to even, when he added a match to Weightmans Packaging. Cetty found the going a little tougher against Curtis, losing in two Sets 2/0 (15/9 and 15/5). Unfortunate for Weightmans, this started a roll of wins for the Tankard team.
In the last Doubles, Tom and Cetty gave it their best shot, but were defeated by Derek and Nathan, 2/1 (15/6, 17/15,15/5).
The last Set of Single matches saw Nathan defeating Gary 2/0 (16/14, 15/13), Derek taking the win over Cetty 2/0 (15/5, 15/11) and Curtis snatching a three Setter from Tom 2/1 (8/15, 15/11,15/13).
The Final score for the night ending with a convincing Win of 8/3 (17/10) to Tankard Dental.
This leaves Tankard Dental Pennant 4 team on top after three rounds, followed by Dunkley Scales
