The big news from round nine results of the Sunraysia Table Tennis pennant was that ladder leader Regional Taxation Services suffered their first loss for the season. Defeat came at the hands of fourth placed Tankard Dental which was a timely win for them given fifth placed Mallee Bearings also scored an impressive 6-5 win over third placed Weightmans Packaging. In the remaining match second placed Cookes Pools & Spas scored a 6-5 victory over Choices Flooring Mildura enabling Cookes to open up a two-game break from third position on the ladder. The race to win the Red Cliffs Club shield is hotting up.

– Tankard Dental 6 (Shannon Bowen 3, Reece Kurrle 2) d Regional Taxation Services 5 (Jackson Tung 2, Rohan Reimers, Lee Leeson 1)

After a very impressive start to the season Regional Taxation Services were narrowly defeated by the dangerous Tankard Dental team who were superbly led by skipper Shannon Bowen in his birthday week. Bowen won three singles including an entertaining three set victory over opposing number one Jackson Tung, a match which contained many superb rallies. Bowen also combined with teammate Reece Kurrle to win the vital first doubles in four sets over the tough combination of Tung and Rohan Reimers.

Kurrle played a key role in Tankard’s success winning two singles including an outstanding comeback when two games to love down against Reimers. Reimers started strongly with some powerful forehands and Kurrle could not get in to the match however from this point the match turned and for the next three games Kurrle was able to take control. In an excellent turnaround Kurrle took the match and the four points for his team 2-11 4-11 11-5 11-7 11-4.

Bowen and Kurrle played in the premiership team in this corresponding pennant in 2025 and they can never be discounted in the race for the Red Cliffs Club shield.

– Mallee Bearings 6 (Arhuang (Wong) Lau 2, Leon Brown, Russell Walder 1) d Weightmans Packaging 5 (Wayne Carmichael 3, Mark Dorman 2)

Fifth placed Mallee Bearings kept their finals hope alive with an impressive 6-5 victory over third team Weightmans Packaging despite Wayne Carmichael and Mark Dorman winning here and two singles respectively for Weightmans. The doubles were the key in this victory for the Bearings trio and the first of these were the key to gaining the four points. Amazingly the pair of Arhuang Lau and Leon Brown managed to only pick up one point in the first game against the seasoned Weightmans pair of Wayne Carmichael and Mark Dorman, The Bearings pair fought back to take the second narrowly however dropped the third as Carmichael and Dorman looked in control. Lau and Brown then controlled the fourth to level the match. The fifth saw Carmichael and Dorman swap ends with a lead of 5-2 and looked in control however the match turned on its head with Lau and in particular Brown landing massive forehands and playing mistake free table tennis. In an amazing finish Lau and Brown won nine points in succession to win 1-11 11-9 8-11 11-6 11-5 an exciting finish.

– Cookes Pools & Spas 6 (Kate Carmichael, Paul Kealley 2, Ashley Morrison 1) d Choices Flooring Mildura 5 (Jamie Kealley 3, Thanh Nguyen 1)

Second placed Cookes Pools & Spas had a real fight on their hands however after trailing 4-5 against the winless Choices Flooring Mildura, Cookes were able to narrowly win 6-5 enabling them to move two wins clear in second place on the ladder. This was a good all round team effort with Kate Carmichael and Paul Kealley winning two singles each while at five rubbers all number three Ashley Morrison outpointed opposite number Marcus Cimino in straight sets to claim the victory for his team. Earlier Morrison combined with Carmichael to win the second doubles over Jamie Kealley and Cimino an important victory given the closeness of the match.

Despite his team losing Jamie Kealley played superb singles to win all his three including a four-set victory over aggregate leader Kate Carmichael. Kealley raced through the first two games with some powerful hitting, Carmichael fought back to take the third and then raced to a 7-1 lead in the fourth before Kealley mounted a brilliant comeback to go on and win 11-3 11-7 7-11 12-10.

In the father son match Jamie recovered from a 1-2 game deficit to defeat father Paul 11-7 8-11 8-11 11-7 11-8 a match containing many powerful drives on both sides of the body.

In an interesting statistic and an indication the competition is close Cookes Pools & Spas are the only team to win their past two matches.

Weightmans Packaging 6 Rasin Bhuiyan (1), Andrew Jones (2), Shiva Rottela (2) defeated Pinnacle Packers 5 Duy Truong (3), Peter Midgley (1), Steve Parker (0).

Weightmans Packaging, who have only scored one win this season and suffered four losses, stepped up their attack against Pinnacle Packers and pulled off a tight 6-5 win.

Midgley and Rottela opened the night with a bombastic five-setter, with the former taking the first set 11-5, Rottela the second 11-8, and then Midgley jumping ahead in the third 11-7. Rottela then seemingly found his opponents Achilles’s heel and exploited it, taking the fourth set 11-2 and then taking the match 11-7 in the fifth. Bhuiyan then cleaned up Parker easily enough, 11-6, 11-5, 11-2, whilst Truong likewise took down Jones in an efficient three-set match, 11-3, 11-5, 11-6. In the first doubles match of the evening, Weightmans narrowly took out the first set 11-9, but Packers didn’t let go, winning the next three 11-8, 11-7, 11-9, tying up the score 2-2.

Bhuiyan then lost a game he couldn’t afford to lose, as Midgley outsmarted him in their match, 9-11, 11-3, 11-9, 11-8. Truong then followed up this win with another over Rottela, winning 11-4, 11-5, 11-6, putting his side ahead at 4 rubbers to 2. Parker tried to continue this winning streak against Jones, taking the first set 11-9, but he couldn’t hold off against the ever-patient Jones, who dominated in the second set 11-3, and just got the edge in the last two to bring it home, 11-9, 11-8. Bhuiyan and Rottela then teamed up for the second doubles and the two successfully beat Packers back, winning in four 11-5, 3-11, 11-9, 12-10, and levelling the score again 4-4.

On to the matchup of the No. 1’s, wherein Bhuiyan had no response to the devastating game that Truong brought to the table, losing 2-11, 6-11, 11-5, 1-11. This win now put Packers ahead by one game, 5-4, but Weightmans weren’t done yet. Jones and Midgley were the next to scrap it out, with Jones taking the first set 11-9, Midgley nabbing the second 12-10, and then Jones gaining the upper hand in the third 11-6. Midgley then got the fourth, 11-7, but succumbed in the fifth 6-11, tying up the score yet again 5-5. The decider then, was to be Rottela versus Parker. Rottela took out the first two sets, 12-10, 11-7, Parker jumped in and won the third 11-6, but Rottela would come out on top in the fourth, 11-7, thus claiming the win for Weightmans Packaging.

Final score 6 rubbers to 5 and 21 games to 22.

Sammy’s Slammers 6 Quentin Clark (2), James Jarvis (2), Ryan Hensgen (0) defeated Mallee Meats 5 Michael Tan (3), Harry Gujral (1), Deegan Kerslake (1).

Round 9 saw Mallee Meats take on fourth-placed Sammy’s Slammers and lose the hotly contested night by one game; 6-5. Meats skipper Tan won his three singles matches for the night but that didn’t stop the resilient Sammys from taking out their second win for the season.

Jarvis got the ball rolling for his team in the night’s opening match by defeating Kerslake, 11-7, 12-10, 11-1, while teammate Hensgen found no luck against the skilled Tan, who won in straight sets, 11-5, 11-8, 11-2. Clark then stepped up against Gujral, with the latter taking the first set, 11-9, but Clark then took control and won the next three 11-7, 11-7, 11-8. The night’s two doubles matches would prove crucial to the Sammys victory, with Clark and Jarvis making it look easy against Meats in the first one, winning 11-7, 11-4, 11-6; inching ahead at 3-1.

Try though he did, Jarvis couldn’t find a weakness in Tan’s game, and he went down in three sets, 7-11, 6-11, 4-11. Kerslake then swung for the fences against Clark, clenching the first set 11-4, but then Clark found his focus and proceeded to beat the youth back, winning 11-8, 11-4, 12-10. Gujral then cleaned up Hensgen confidently, 11-6, 11-8, 11-8 as the two sides then went into the second doubles. They struggled hard in the first two sets, with the Sammys just nabbing them, 11-9, 11-8, and then Meats came down hard in the third, winning 11-7. But they ran out of puff in the fourth, giving the Sammys the opportunity they needed to win, 11-4.

That win brought the score to 5-3 in the Sammy’s favour. Meats were able to hold them off for one more rubber, with Clark losing to opposite captain Tan in their match, 11-13, 11-13, 9-11. Now 5-4, Gujral made a massive attempt against Jarvis to level the score. In the opening sets, the two scraped it out, with Gujral prevailing but not by much, 13-11, 11-8. He then faltered in the third, 6-11 and then took it all the way against his opponent in the fourth, but lost as well, 10-12. Now at 2 sets apiece, after an epic struggle, Gujral was seemingly beaten, going out with a whimper in the fifth, 4-11. Now even though the Sammys had secured the win, Kerslake and Hensgen decided another five-setter was in order, as they two battled it out in the eleventh rubber, with Kerslake emerging victorious, 7-11, 11-8, 11-7, 9-11, 11-4.

Final score 6 rubbers to 5 and 20 games to 20.

– Cookes Pools & Spas 8 (Koby Grace 3, Yen Hwak 2, Peter Fitzpatrick 1) d Exposed Signage/Apparel 3 (Karly Leach, Edi Re, Hayden Wilson 1)

Cookes Pools & Spas versus Exposed Signage/Apparel Ladder leaders Cookes Pools & Spas after losing two matches in the first three early then were able to get on the front foot , in the first match Cooke’s Koby Grace fought out a strong five-set win over Hayden Wilson, this was a very entertaining match and the first of six five setters for the night. Hayden took a two games to love lead only for Koby to recover to win 6-11 11-13 11-6 11-8 11-4, an excellent comeback.

The Exposed duo of Karly Leach and fill in Edi Re then were successful in the next two singles with Karly fending off a brave Yen Hwak in a further five set slog while Karly’s team mate Edi Re then proved too consistent for Peter Fitzpatrick winning in straight sets.

Peter and Koby then levelled the match at two rubbers all by defeating Karly and Edi Re in the first doubles.

The next block of singles featured three five set matches. Again, Koby had to recover from a 0-2 deficit to again win in five sets, his victim this time was Karly, a top effort by Koby.

The next singles was a marathon when Exposed number three Hayden Wilson survived several match points in a thriller to defeat opposing number one Peter Fitzpatrick 11-5 6-11 12-14 11-8 13-11, again the scores were level, three rubbers all.

From here the top team jumped into top gear winning the remaining five matches to produce a commanding 8-3 victory which has given them a 3-win break at the head of the ladder.

Despite the scoreboard, Exposed Signage/Apparel showed plenty of determination throughout the night with all their team winning one singles however they did struggle in the doubles.

Cookes Pools & Spas proved too consistent across the evening. Koby Grace was the star winning three singles and the doubles he played in and Yen Hwak enjoyed a good night winning two singles and a doubles. Skipper Fitzpatrick contributed strongly despite winning only one singles as he played in both doubles victories to help seal the strong result. At the end of the night, Cookes Pools & Spas claimed the overall win 8 rubbers to 3, finishing ahead comfortably on games 28-19 in a strong team performance.

– Weightmans Packaging 6 (Sabrina Fitzpatrick, Steve Pongrac, Matt Sires 2) d Regional Taxation Services 5 (Andrew Kremor 3)

This was a thriller and went right to the wire in the battle for third place on the ladder.

Weightmans Packaging edged out Regional Taxation Services in the closest match of Round nine of the Pennant Three competition, claiming a thrilling 6-5 victory. The contest was tight from the opening rubbers, with both teams trading wins throughout the night. Weightmans Packaging made a strong start, with Matt Sires defeating fill in Lewis Hussey in four games, Lewis broke away in the first only for Matt to fight back and win the first narrowly, he then raced through the second before Lewis took the third. Matt then was able to control the fourth and go on and record his first singles victory for the season.

With Sabrina Fitzpatrick accounting for Curtis Crabtree in straight sets Weightmans Packaging took a 2-0 lead.

Regional Taxation Services then fought back strongly through skipper Andrew Kremor who defeated Steve Pongrac in four sets. Andrew was outstanding in singles play and proved difficult to stop all evening going on to win three singles and continue to lead the singles aggregate.

The doubles pairing of Andrew Kremor and Lewis Hussey also delivered an important comeback win after dropping the opening game, helping Regional Taxation Services level the match at two rubbers each. Regional Taxation Services consistency across the middle stages enabled them to take a 5-4 lead late in the match and they looked threatening. Steve Pongrac and Sabrina kept Weightmans Packaging in the race with singles victories over Curtis and Lewis respectively.

Steve produced an important five-game win over Curtis in one of the matches of the night. It was a strong finish by Steve in the fifth.

Both doubles were won by Regional Taxation Services and with two rubbers to play they took the lead 5-4.

Steve then won his second singles this time defeating Lewis and the score now stood at five rubbers all.

The final match then featured Weightmans Matt Sires up against Curtis and what a match it was, Curtis took the first narrowly while Matt then won the next two games before Curtis raced through the fourth , the fifth featured many long rallies with both players keen to take the points however it was Matt who showed tremendous concentration to go on and bank the four points winning 12-14 11-7 11-6 311 11-8.

The result ultimately came down to the final rubber, with Weightmans Packaging narrowly securing the overall win 6 rubbers to 5, finishing ahead 23 games to 20 in a hard-fought team performance. It was a high-quality and competitive night of table tennis, with both sides showing plenty of resilience and determination right to the final point.

While his teammates Sabrina and Steve won two singles each it was Matt Sires who played the key role in the victory by Weightmans, by also winning two singles. These two wins will give him confidence for the remainder of the season ahead.

Regional Taxation Services skipper could do no more in the match as he won three singles as well as playing in both doubles’ victories.

PENNANT FOUR:

With the results of the Doubles landing Mallee Meats the top position on the Ladder, Round nine may just have seen Tankard Dental climb back up, to resume their number one spot. Mallee Meats Captain, Kym Sykes wasn’t available to play this week, but we won’t hold that against him, as he was diving with the Sharks and Manta Rays, which looked awesome.

– Weightmans Packaging 8 (Jakob Grzan 3, Glenn Leeson 2, Conner Burnett 1) d Mallee Meats 3 (Jenny Leach 2, Calvin Tjhin 1)

Weightmans – Glenn Leesson, Jakob Grzan and Conner Burnett. Mallee – Kym Sykes (Fill in – Calvin Tuhin), Nathan Beard and Jenny Leach.

This encounter saw both teams doing their very best to make a difference to their final score, with four five set matches, which included 13 games being pushed over 11.

It was a 2 to 1 lead for Weightmans after the initial set of Singles. Nathan put Conner under pressure all the way through their four sets, with Conner needing to win on a 13 and 12 in the second and third sets. But in the finish, Nathan couldn’t take control back and Weightmans grabbed the Rubber.

Jen had her determination button in the on position when she came up against Glenn, thinking she would give it her best shot, not give up, but really didn’t think she could come out with the win. It was an exhilarating match, which went the distance, with the first set going to Glenn, before Jen held on to win the next two, with scores of 13/15 and 10/12. It looked like it was all slipping away in the fourth, when Weightmans Captain slipped through with ease, in an 11/3 set. This made Jen bring out the focus card and work her way back to surprise herself and nab the Rubber.

Calvin did a great job for Mallee, filling in for Kym in the number one position, but Jakob was running hot on Wednesday. Weghtman’s number two, seemed to have Calvin’s measure, with a four set match, handing Jakob the Rubber.

Calvin and Nathan managed to sneak the third set from Glenn and Jakob in the first Doubles, but Glenn’s experience came to the front and the Weightman’s pair gathered yet another Rubber.

With Nathan now up against Glenn, he had to use any edge he may have to find a win, as Mallee were desperate for a win. It was a very tight match, with both players sending down some excellent shots and another 15 /13 sets being produced and after a five set slog, Glenn gave his team their fourth Rubber.

Trouble was looming, as Mallee still only held one win, so they had their fingers crossed for Calvin to find some magic in his battle with Conner. Once again these two teams found a way to fight out the third five set match, with the two middle sets going out to 12 and 13. The finger crossing must have done the trick, as Calvin was able to find a way around Conners game and notch up a second win with some terrific serves and forehands.

Maybe if Jen was able to continue her form from her first singles, it might give Mallee a bit of motivation to forge ahead. But as mentioned earlier, Jakob had found another gear in round nine, so this was going to be a full on skirmish. Jen certainly didn’t stop trying, forcing the match out to five sets, with the final game going to 12/10. Jakob, though, had the final say and gave his team an overwhelming advantage, taking the win and now holding five Rubbers.

The last Doubles didn’t end kindly for Mallee, with the pairing of Glenn and Connor, getting the better of Calvin and Jen, with three of the four games going well over the limit 12/14, 14/12, 11/5, 12/10. A well played match by Weightman’s, to pocket the nights win.

Glenn had too many tricks for Calvin and this was the only three set match for the night, adding to the bottom line for Weightman’s.

Jakob notched up his third Singles win for the night, when he came up against Nathan. There were plenty of long Rallies, with Jakob showing his true skills, in the four set wrestle.

The last to come to the Table were Conner and Jen and although the Match had already been decided, Jen’s passion was still firing and knowing how Conner can throw in his challenging spin shots, it was going to be a tight clash. The first game was full on and finished Jen winning 12/14. Conner fought back in the second set to claim one. The third also went the distance, with a determined Mallee number three player sneaking in with an 11/13 win and then winding it up winning the fourth, to completed a very competitive night.

– Tankard Dental 6 (Darren Bottams 3, Tom Gilmour 2, Jake Hines 1) d Dunkley Scales 5 (Rodney Galvin 2, Maria Starikov 1)

Tankard – Tom Gilmour, Darren Bottams and Jake Hines. Dunkley – Rod Galvin, Maria Starikov and  Andrew Jeffries (Fill in – Alma McKay).

The battle between these two teams was just the opposite to the previous match, as there was not one five set match, despite a very close finish.

After the opening Singles matches, it was Tankard who held the upper hand, but only by one Rubber.

Darren and Rod had a really good tussle, with some very cagey shots from these two, with their past experience showing. Darren wound it up in four, to start his team off on the right foot.

Maria had the wood on Jake, but not to say Tankards number three didn’t toss in some amazing shots, he just didn’t have what it took to get the win over Maria.

With Dunkley’s number three (fill-in) getting some coaching on Monday, you could see some improvement in her paly, but in the end, Tom had a reasonably easy win over Alma.

It was the combination of Tom and Darren fighting it out in the Doubles, against Rod and Maria, which saw three of the four sets falling to Dunkley, after each went out to 10/12.

Now the scores were tied and Rod hit the Table with a definite advantage, coming up against Jake. Unfortunately Tankards Jake didn’t stand a chance, with Rod sliding in for the win.

Darren had that same advantage when he and Alma contested their game. Alma improved in her second match, but Darren was far too strong.

It’s normally a lengthy combat when Tom and Maria wrestle it out and Maria snagged the first set, but it must have triggered something in Tom, as he Reved up his game and took the next three.

The final Doubles was Tom and Jake against Tod and Alma. It was a ding-dong match, with the Rubber going to Dunkley, after three sets.

Once again we saw the score board back to level, so who would take the bit between their teeth and walk away with the win ?

Jake and Alma’s match was fairly even, with Alma showing she does have the shots, but it would be Jake who would leave with the Chockies and the Rubber, to give Tankard the advantage.

Tom struggled a bit in his match with Rod, after winning the first set, Tankard number one gave Rod a run for his money in the next, but was unable to continue with Dunkley completing their melee in four sets, to leave the pressure on the shoulders of Darren and Maria.

Maria fought very hard to keep Darren at bay, which produced some terrific Rally points. In the end it was Darren who brought home the Bacon for Tankard and also marked up 3 Singles wins for himself.
