Teams first and second on the ladder were defeated in this week’s games, Mallee Bearings going down to Pinnacle Packers and Fishers IGA losing to Spanline. Despite this, and the result of the third game, the ladder remains the same.
PINNACLE PACKERS v. MALLEE BEARINGS
– Pinnacle Packers 7 (Daniel Jansen 3, Glen Bell, Leon Brown 1) d Mallee Bearings 4 (Ashley Morrison, Trevor Gebert 2)
Two weeks ago Pinnacle Packers languished at the bottom of the ladder with a solitary win, this week they earned their third win of the season with a workmanlike victory over ladders leaders Pinnacle Packers. Daniel Jansen led by example, (and in the process joined Sony Sefer at the head of the aggregate ladder), winning three singles and coaxing his team-mates Leon Brown and this week’s number three fill-in Glen Bell to victories in both doubles. Brown and Bell each won a singles to make the final score 7 rubbers to 4 and 25 games to 16. This win puts Pinnacle Packers into a solid fourth position on the ladder ahead of Tankard Dental, who are on the same points, but well behind on percentage. The Packers actually have a better percentage than the ladder leaders, so things are certainly tight at the top. Jansen was untroubled in this three singles, defeating his opposing number one Trevor Gebert in three sets 9, 3 and 7, number two Ashley Morrison also in three 9, 3 and 9, and only conceding a single set to number three fill-in Matt Ljubic to take his third win. 
The four rubbers for Mallee Bearings came courtesy of two singles wins to both Trevor Gebert and Ashley Morrison who both beat Leon Brown and Glen Bell. Brown did not give in easily in his loss to Gebert, leading two sets to one before losing in five sets in the final match of the night, to give the ladder leaders a face-saving fourth rubber.
SPANLINE v FISHERS IGA
– Spanline 6 (Arnold Jago, Arthur Paar 2, Laurie Plummer 1) d Fishers IGA 5 (Seval Fuat, Sony Sefer 2)
Second placed Fishers IGA played third placed Spanline in this seventh round match, and the result was not decided until the final rubber of the night. Considering recent form, Fishers were the favourites, as both Captain Sony Sefer and his number two Seval Fuat have been in good form and helping themselves to solid wins in recent weeks. Spanline got the upper hand early, skipping away to a two rubbers to nil lead. The two captains, Arthur Paar and Sefer, played in the first match of the night, the game swinging first one way then the other, and it was only in the last set that the score was really close, the other sets having being dominated by one player or the other. 
This was a confidence boosting win to Paar, and he claimed the rubber 7-11, 11-2, 7-11, 11-5, 12-10. After this early success, though, Fishers fought back to lead 4 rubbers to 2 after six. Fuat had to fight like mad to overcome a rejuvenated Laurie Plummer, still hurting from last week’s loss, to take that match in five, Fuat and Sefer then combined and had little trouble taking the doubles against Paar and Plummer in three. Paar could not continue his Sefer-beating form, and lost to Fuat in five sets, after leading two sets to love. So, at that stage it was 4 rubbers to 2, and Fishers would have been hopeful of winning two of the last five rubbers. But it was not to be, as firstly youngster Plummer (compared to Paar and Jago) bagged a win, overcoming opposite number Colin Moore in four sets. The next doubles also went their way, Paar and Jago beating Sefer and Moore in four. Then, in what was probably a surprise to both players, Arnold Jago took only three sets to account for Fuat, winning 8, 3 and 8. That then gave Spanline the lead again at 5 rubbers to 4 with two to play. Plummer continued his determined play, but was only able to extract one set from Sony Sefer for Fishers to level at 5 all, and the match was completed when Paar took only three sets to defeat Colin Moore, 10, 9 and 3. Scores then Spanline 6 rubbers to Fishers 5, and 24 games to 20.
TANKARD DENTAL v MAX MILLER CARPETS
-Tankard Dental 6 (Andrew Jones 3, Nick Barlow 2) d Max Miller Carpets 5 (Ross Humphreys 2, Matthew Burns, Karina Sullivan 1)
This match, between the two bottom-placed teams was really quite close, although the result was determined after nine rubbers. Tankard Dental, who were equal on points with their opponents and sat fifth on the ladder going into the match, took the four points for the win, but their percentage remains the same, as both teams won 21 games. 
Andrew Jones was the stand-out player in this match, winning his three singles and his doubles. He had easy wins against both the experienced Ross Humphreys and Matthew Burns, winning these two matches in three sets. However, he was surprised and two sets down before he got a handle on his match with Karina Sullivan, before going on to win 2-11, 5-11, 11-2, 11-7, 11-4 in an entertaining encounter. Tankard captain Nick Barlow, playing his first match of the season garnered two wins (beating Matthew Burns in five, and Sullivan in four), but by the time the last match of the victory, and Humphreys and Burns easily won their doubles against Barlow and the luckless Lavery in three.Night came around, and Barlows lack of match play showed and Ross Humphreys took a convincing 11-6, 11-6, 11-6 win. Tankard’s sixth rubber came in the second doubles, Barlow and Jones beating Burns and Sullivan in four. Number three Connor Lavery has shown this season that he is a player of the future, but failed to shine in this match. However, his singles match with his opposite number Karina Sullivan, was a big-hitting top-spin-hitting flamboyant affair. Sullivan led two sets to nil, Lavery fought back to level the match, but the result went to Sullivan when she dominated the fifth 11-2. For the Carpeters, Humphreys took two wins, Sullivan and Burns could only help the cause with a single

Ladder leaders Weightmans Packaging took their seventh straight win of the season, captain Darren Greaves continued his run of seven perfect scores and sits at the top of the aggregate with 21 games from a possible 21. Greaves, however, got a couple of frights in this match, and he knows by now that his opponents are trying extra-hard to destroy his “perfect” scoring record. 
In this encounter his opposite number Bernadette Fitzpatrick, and later her mother Sabrina, both contrived to get that first match from Greaves, both matches going the full five sets, before Greaves held out, and gladly left the table with the wins. Greaves had the full support of his team-mates; Jeremy Corrin popped up with two wins, and Lachlan Kelly tried hard as usual and contributed one. Greaves and Corrin took the second doubles in three sets, to give his side a 7 rubbers to 4 victory. Corrin had a great tussle in the first match of the night with Sabrina Fitzpatrick. Corrin has already had a season of pennant three, and it could have been that that got him over the line on this occasion. Fitzpatrick only grudgingly conceded points, as the scoreline of 9-11, 11-8, 11-8, 9-11, 12-10 shows. The final games score of 21 games to 20 shows what a close match this was, even though Weightmans outscored Mallee Bearings 7 rubbers to 4.
FISHERS IGA v. PINNACLE PACKERS
– Fishers IGA 7 (Harrison Cottrell, Peter Kelly 2, Vaughan Waters 1) d Pinnacle Packers 4 (Matt Ljubic, Garry Hughes 2)
This game, between the two bottom teams, again failed to give cellar-dwellers Pinnacle Packers their first win. With the absence of their captain Damen Southgate, Pinnacle Packers had the services of Matthew Ljubic who was also filling in in Pennant Two for this round. Matthew gave his all, winning in five sets in a difficult game against Vaughan Waters, who is improving by the week, outplaying the unorthodox Peter Kelly in four, but running out of puff and going down to Harrison Cottrell in his last match of the night 11-8, 10-12, 9-11, 9-11. 
Still with the Packers, Gary Hughes contributed two games for only the second time this year to give him a total of six games on the aggregate. His match with Harrison Cottrell was a beauty, the sets alternating 11-9, until Harrison faded in the fifth for Hughes to take an 11-5 win. Despite some solid defence by the Packers, Fishers took both the doubles, Kelly and Waters defeating their opposite numbers in four sets and Kelly and Cottrell needing only three sets to finalise their match against Ljubic and Leonie Dunkley. This win sees Fishers join Mallee Bearings on eight points, but with a superior percentage, they also jump Mallee Bearings to be now third on the ladder behind Weightmans Packaging and Max Miller Carpets. The final score line was Fishers IGA 7 rubbers 27 games to Pinnacle Packers 4 rubbers and 19 games.
PENNANT FOUR
Fishers IGA vs. Max Miller Carpets
– Max Miller Carpets 6 (Ben Hosking, Cole Keegan 2, Georgia Tilley 1) d Fishers IGA 5 (Ryan Hensgen 3, Helen Frania 1)
This was an important match for both teams and what a match it was to and froiing all night. In a really close tussle Max Miller Carpets took the points narrowly 6-5. The match was close all the way with five five setters involved. 
For the victors skipper Ben Hosking and Cole Keegan won two singles while Georgia Tilley won one. 
The one win of Georgia’s was a real highlight as she dropped the first two games against Kerryn Greaves only to fight back well to take the third and then win the fourth and fifth, the final score line indicated the closeness 9-11 9-11 11-4 12-10 12-10 – a great match by both players. The Carpeter’s Cole Keegan again displayed his consistency his two wins meaning he has won two every round he has participated in, while his skipper Hosking after a “duck” last week showed improved form. This win has put the Carpeter’s back into second position.
Fishers skipper Ryan Hensgen again won three singles for his team and combined in the first doubles with Kerryn Greaves to defeat Hosking and Keegan 11-8 3-11 11-9 6-11 11-7 in a good tussle. Fishers Helen Frania won one singles defeating Georgia Tilley 11-8 7-11 11-6 9-11 11-7 however her team fell agonisingly one rubber short in their quest to get off the bottom of the ladder. The good news is that they are not far off the pace.
Bishop Builders vs. Mallee Bearings
– Mallee Bearings 8 (Claire Ljubic, Shirley Whitecross, Ellie Midgley 2) d Bishop Builders 3 (Sam Hensgen 3)
Top team Mallee Bearings continued on their merry way defeating Bishop Builders 8-3.
In an even team display Claire Ljubic, Shirley Whitecross and Ellie Midgley won two singles each as well as combining to win both doubles. The girls are on fire and after seven rounds are now clearly flag favourites although we are only half way through a long season. After losing the first two matches of the season the girls have now won five in a row.
Bishop Builder’s number one Sam Hensgen maintained his lead at the top of the singles aggregate winning three singles against a tough opposition. His match against Claire Ljubic was a beauty going to four sets with Sam winning 9-11 11-6 22-20 11-7. The third game went on and on reminding the older players of the games to 21 days. Whilst all the girls of Mallee bearings have shown great improvement this year the Builder’s skipper Hensgen has also improved his game and he will be keen to push into pennant three in the next pennant. For now though he is focused on getting his team deep into the finals in August.
The highlight match in this contest was the five setter between Ellie Midgley and Paul Fitzpatrick. Young Fitzpatrick is a talented player and when he took a two games to love lead it looked like he would probably take the match however Midgley had other ideas winning the third and fourth. In the fifth Fitzpatrick took a 7-4 lead and again Midgley dug deep pushing to her opponents back hand consistently. In a great fight back Midgley took the match 4-11 5-11 11-6 11-7 11-8 much to the delight of her team mates. Shirley Whitecross also produced an eyecatching performance in taking out a 4 set victory over Paul.
