Mallee Bearings recorded their second victory in as many rounds and hold first position on the Sunraysia Table Tennis summer pennant one ladder by percentage from Pinnacle Packers. After three rounds both teams have tasted success twice and have also had a bye.
After a thumping win in the previous round Mallee Bearings had to work much harder this round against Fishers IGA and managed to take the points 6-5 in a match that had many twists. Despite not winning a doubles the Mallee Bearings combination of Mark Ljubic, Darren Robinson and Daniel Jansen played consistent table tennis to win three, two and one singles respectively.
Skipper Ljubic has started the summer pennant in tremendous style remaining undefeated in singles a great achievement given he did not play the recent winter pennant due to injury. Both Ljubic and team mate Darren Robinson outpointed opposing number one Gavin Carmichael which was always going to make it difficult for Fishers.
Fishers number two Jackson Tung did perform well for his team winning two singles and taking Ljubic to four sets. To cap off a good night for himself Tung also combined with Carmichael to defeat Ljubic and Robinson in straight sets in the first doubles. With the match at five rubbers all Fishers Sony Sefer took an early lead over Daniel Jansen leading two rubbers to one before Jansen steadied to win the fourth and fifth to get his team over the line.
Jansen was successful 11-6 8-11 8-11 11-9 11-7 much to the delight of his team mates. Sefer had tried his best but it was the inability of his skipper Gavin Carmichael to win more than one singles which caused Fishers to go down against a side already fancied to take out the competition.
– Pinnacle Packers 7 (Wayne Carmichael 3, Kevin Johns 2, Peter Midgley 1) d Weightmans Packaging 4 (Mark Dorman 2, Ed Hung 1)
Pinnacle Packers moved to outright second on the ladder with a methodical 7-4 victory over Weightmans Packaging. Weightmans number three Jackson Murphy was a late withdrawal and was replaced by the experienced Denise Henderson who played her first pennant one match for some time after a lengthy break due to injury. A recent return to pennant two showed she has not lost her touch and in the first game of the night she fought hard to just go down in a tough five setter against veteran Kevin Johns 11-2 7-11 7-11 11-6 11-8.
With the match standing at four rubbers all the two skippers Wayne Carmichael for the Packers and Weightmans Mark Dorman played a tremendous five setter with Carmichael narrowly taking the points and remaining undefeated in singles matches. The two lefties always put on a great show with victory just going to Carmichael 13-11 8-11 11-2 8-11 11-9 a great contest. 
Packers Kevin Johns then accounted for Ed Hung in four sets to give his team victory. Team mate Peter Midgley then defeated Denise Henderson to wrap up the 7-4 victory.
This week a great match looms when the two undefeated teams Mallee Bearings and Pinnacle Packers take to the table. Both skippers Mark Ljubic and Wayne Carmichael are undefeated in singles and a top match is expected.
PENNANT TWO
A round in which the three juniors playing at this level acquitted themselves well. Nicholas Dorman, subbing for Denise Henderson, scored a perfect three singles wins and Bernadette Fitzpatrick and Matt Ljubic both finished the night with two wins apiece.
– Fishers IGA 7 (Nicholas Dorman 3, Seval Fuat 2) d Pinnacle Packers 4 (Bernadette Fitzpatrick 2, Arnold Jago, Robert Chiswell 1)
Fishers were without Denise Henderson for this match – Henderson filling-in in Pennant One. Her substitute was Nicholas Dorman, and he finished the night winning everything he played in; three singles and both doubles. This effort helped Fishers to a seven rubbers to four and 25 games to 17 win over Pinnacle Packers Robert Chiswell, Arnold Jago and Bernadette Fitzpatrick. 
Dorman had stern opposition from fellow junior Bernadette Fitzpatrick. Fitzpatrick took their first set 11-6, and refused to allow Dorman to dominate, before Dorman ran out with the final three sets 11-8, 11-7, 12-10. His match against Robert Chiswell (subbing for Ross Humphreys) was also four sets, and he allowed Chiswell less points than Fitzpatrick extracted from him; he won this one 11-6, 3-11, 11-7, 11-7. And in the final round of singles he was absolutely ruthless against Arnold Jago. Jago could only win a total of fifteen points in the whole match. Dorman got better as the match went on – final score 11-7, 11-5, 11-3. Seval Fuat contributed two wins to his sides victory – these over known opponents Arnold Jago in four and Chiswell also in four. But against Bernadette Fitzpatrick he had his hands full losing the first set 10-12, grabbing the next two 11-6, 11-6, then losing the fourth 10-12, before running out of puff (literally) in the fifth to go down 11-6. As mentioned, both doubles went to the victors, Fuat and Dorman downing Chiswell and Jago 13-11, 6-11, 11-8, 11-7, and later Dorman (playing in place of an exhausted Fuat after his match with Fitzpatrick !!) and Peter Fitzpatrick needing only three sets to down Bernadette Fitzpatrick and Chiswell 12-10, 11-8, 11-6. As mentioned, Bernadette Fitzpatrick played well, and was the stand-out player for the losers. While Arnold Jago and Robert Chiswell could only manage one win (both against Peter Fitzpatrick), Bernadette finished with two, the already mentioned win against Fuat, and later against her father also. Fishers stay at the top of the ladder, still unbeaten, and Pinnacle Packers will surely improve on this performance.
– Spanline 6 (Laurie Plummer 3, Matt Ljubic 2) d Tankard Dental 5 (Ashley Morrison 2, Colin Moore, Karina Sullivan 1)
After losses in the first two rounds, Spanline recorded their first win of the summer season. Spanline’s number two Laurie Plummer led from the front winning all his singles matches. 
Plummer has really kicked on since the recent winter pennant, when he was part of the winning combination, and with these three scalps moves to second on the aggregate. Plummer obviously spent the recent break well; in the first match of the night he sent Ashley Morrison packing after only four sets 11-9, 11-9, 4-11, 11-7. And he did not waste any time later in the evening when he encountered Karina Sullivan (11-9, 11-6, 11-7) and Colin Moore (11-8, 11-8, 11-6). He was ably backed up by number three Matt Ljubic who played the consistent Colin Moore in the first round of singles, and proved far too good, allowing Moore a solitary set. He took the match 11-7, 11-5, 11-13, 11-8. Later in the night he simply outplayed Karina Sullivan 11-7, 11-7, 11-8. Added to these wins, he and Plummer had an impressive doubles win against Morrison and Moore. They were two sets down 11-2, 11-3 and seemingly out of the contest, but a heads-down tails-up third set 13-11 got their blood running again. They then continued on to take the final two sets 11-7, 11-9. That then is the story of the six rubbers Spanline accumulated to take this win. No mention of their number one Arthur Paar? Arthur’s game is a bit of a mystery at the moment, Karina Sullivan beat him 8-11, 6-11, 11-6, 11-6, 11-5, Colin Moore also in five 11-7, 11-7, 7-11, 9-11, 11-8 and in the last round of singles Ashley Morrison needed only three sets 11-3, 13-11, 11-8 to record a win. Morrison’s second singles win was over Ljubic – Ljubic is learning quickly, taking the third set from the hard-hitting Morrison, but on this occasion Morrison had too much for the youngster to win 11-8, 11-4, 9-11, 11-8. Morrison and Sullivan also took the second doubles against Paar and Plummer 11-3, 14-12, 11-9. This was a close win to Spanline, and although they are winless, players of the calibre of Morrison, Moore and Sullivan will not allow games to slip for the rest of the season.
PENNANT THREE
This week in one match the two top teams played off, and the in the other the two bottom teams faced each other.
– Sunny Daily 6 (Matt Johns 3, Mick Bacon, Lachlan Kelly 1) d Weightmans Packaging 5 (Sam Hensgen 2, Karly Leach, Sabrina Fitzpatrick 1)
Sunny Daily and Weightman’s Packaging had not won a match after the first two rounds, and this match went down to the wire. After the seventh rubber, Weightman’s led five rubbers to two, but in a remarkable comeback Sunny Daily took the win six rubbers to five. Interestingly it was the two number threes who won the most games for their respective sides. Matt Johns, playing for the victors took three wins, downing Karly Leach in three, then Sabrina Fitzpatrick and Sam Hensgen in four. 
And for Weightman’s, Sam Hensgen took two – defeating Lachlan Kelly in four and ever improving Mick Bacon in five. It was appropriate then, that Hensgen and Johns played the deciding eleventh rubber. Johns proved too strong to sew the game up for his side 11-8, 11-5, 8-11, 11-7. All the other players each took one singles win, and the doubles were shared. Fitzpatrick and Leach always looked strong in the first doubles, taking the win 10-12, 11-6, 11-5, 9-11, 11-7 against Kelly and Bacon in five sets. But Kelly and Johns proved too a strong combination against Fitzpatrick and Hensgen, winning easily 11-8, 11-8, 11-4. A good win to Sunny Daily 6 rubbers to 5 and 25 games to 18.
– Max Miller Carpets 10 (Peter Kelly, Brian Hosking 3, Ryan Hensgen 2) d Dunkley Scales 1 (Jeremy Corrin 1)
Prior to this match, these two teams were first and second on the ladder, Dunkley Scales being on top on percentage. But the Max Miller Carpets trio of Peter Kelly (subbing for Nicholas Dorman), Brian Hosking and Ryan Hensgen ran away with this game, conceding only one rubber. They were clearly the superior team, winning six of the rubbers in just three sets. There were two others they won in five sets and two in four. And the rubber which Dunkley Scales did win was a hard-fought encounter between the Carpeters number three Ryan Hensgen and Dunkley’s number one Jeremy Corrin. 
Corrin, being two sets to one down, eventually got the better of Hensgen 11-9, 11-13, 9-11, 11-4, 11-7. Max Millers won ten rubbers to one then and 32 (from a possible 33) games to a disappointing 9 to Dunkley Scales. Max Miller Carpets have now asserted them as the team to beat in this pennant, having won each of their three matches. And if/when Nicholas Dorman returns, things are not likely to change.
PENNANT FOUR
– Dunkley Scales 8 (Andrew Lewis 3, Peter Edwards 2, Steve Winton 1) d Max Miller Carpets 3 (Michael Hensgen 2, Roy Cubit 1)
Despite losing the in form Ellie Midgley just before the match due to illness, Dunkley Scales continued on their winning way to defeat Max Miller Carpets 8-3 in a solid display by the undefeated ladder leaders. In an even display skipper Andrew Lewis won three singles, Peter Edwards performed well to win two while fill in Steve Winton won one marathon match. Steve received the late call up while watching his son Travis in the other pennant four contest. Steve and opponent Shirley Whitecross played the highlight match, a marathon which went to five sets. Steve won the first two games however Shirley then played consistent table tennis to level the match at two rubbers all before Steve narrowly won the fifth in a thriller 15-13.
With Midgley out of the team number three player 
Peter Edwards lifted to win two singles. He capped off a great night when he combined with skipper Andrew Lewis to win the second doubles in straight sets against Roy Cubit and Michael Hensgen.
For the Carpeters Michael Hensgen performed best winning two singles. They will strengthen their team next round when number one player Cole Keegan returns from his overseas trek.
– Sunny Daily 6 (Travis Winton, Claire Ljubic 2, Paul Fitzpatrick 1) d Bishop Builders 5 (Josh Carmichael 3, Ben Hosking 1)
Sunny Daily was able to win 6-5 over Bishop Builders and in doing so they have maintained their hold on second position on the ladder. This win came despite Josh Carmichael winning three singles for the Builders and his form has been excellent in his first season of senior table tennis. He now shares the aggregate lead with Andrew Lewis after three with only one loss in nine matches.
For Sunny Daily skipper Claire Ljubic performed well winning two singles as did first year player Travis Winton who is improving each week. Ljubic and young Winton won the crucial second doubles when they accounted for Josh Carmichael and Sonya Shalliker in three sets. With Helen Frania overseas Paul Fitzpatrick filled in and won an important singles to assist Sunny Daily to grab the four points in what was a close contest.
Bishop Builders have struggled to date however the form of Josh Carmichael is very encouraging and if his skipper Ben Hosking is able to lift the Builders could be a threat later in the season in this four team competition. Hosking has been a finals specialist over the past two pennants and this team despite being winless cannot be discounted yet!!
