Gavin ‘Richie’ Carmichael has shaped Pinnacle Packers into formidable unit and favourites for the 2013 Summer Pennant. With one round to play before finals Pinnacle have opened up a 3 game lead on top. His tough love Captaincy could be just the tonic for Premiership success.
PENNANT ONE:
In a tense struggle on the grandstand court Bishop Builders took the points narrowly 6-5 against Max Miller Carpets in round eight action of Sunraysia Table Tennis and in doing so booked a spot in the upcoming finals. With one round still to be played this match was vital to both teams.
– Bishop Builders 6 (Mark Ljubic, Michael Hogarth 2, Peter Bishop 1) d Max Miller Carpets 5(Mark Dorman 3, Geoff Wright 1)
With the scores locked at five rubbers all Peter Bishop for the Builders outlasted Arthur Paar 7-11 10-12 11-4 11-8 13-11 in a match that could have gone either way. Bishop recovered from a two game deficit to take the points. Earlier his team had trailed 4-5 with two singles to play. Bishops team mate Michael Hogarth played a key role as well winning two singles for the second time this season and his timing could not have been better. His straight sets defeat of Geoff Wright was commendable while earlier he outlasted the luckless Paar in another five set struggle. Again in this match Paar held a two game lead only to be overrun at the end.
For the Carpeters Mark Dorman continued his good form winning three singles while Geoff Wright won a marathon five setter against Peter Bishop earlier in the night. The doubles were shared and both decided by the barest margin over five sets indicating how close this match was.
– Mallee Bearings 6 (Ali Taheri, Jackson Tung, Matt Ljubic 2) d Weightmans Packaging 5 (Andrew Cannard 3)
After dropping their past two matches Mallee Bearings, who were back at full strength this round, proved too consistent for Weightmans Packaging winning 6-5 after trailing 4-5 with two singles to play. On centre court all Mallee Bearings players, Ali Taheri, Jackson Tung and the super consistent Matt Ljubic won two singles. This win places the Bearings combination on four wins one clear of their next opponent Max Miller Carpets. Their opponents this round are also on four wins and an exciting climax is looming in the final round. Andrew Cannard again was the stand out player for Weightmans and he now sits equal second on the singles aggregate with a chance next round to finish outright second. He was placed under extreme pressure against Jackson Tung and trailed one game to two before he steadied to win in five. Cannard also featured in both doubles victories in a superb display however his team just came up short when it counted.
– Pinnacle Packers 7 (Gavin Carmichael, Nicholas Dorman 2, Leon Brown 1) d Fishers IGA 4 (Wayne Carmichael 3, Ashley Morrison 1)
The remaining match on the stage court featured ladder leaders Pinnacle Packers up against bottom team Fishers IGA who were coming off two wins in succession. The difference in this match was that the Packers were able to secure both doubles which in the end was vital. The second doubles was a thriller with Packers pair Gavin Carmichael and fill in from pennant two Leon Brown narrowly defeating Wayne Carmichael and Ross Humphreys 12-10 6-11 11-8 7-11 11-9. Brown had a good night also picking up a singles against Ross Humphreys. Brown’s night could have been more impressive as against Ash Morrison he started extremely well winning the first two games and then leading 10-7 in the third with three match points. Morrison had some fortune with the net at this point and in a tremendous turn around Morrison fought back from this deficit to win in five.
The Packers Nicholas Dorman continued his good form winning two singles and he also featured in the first doubles victory. For Fishers Wayne Carmichael easily won his customary three singles and he will win his umpteenth singles aggregate, to date he is undefeated in 27 singles matches.
PENNANT TWO:
Ed Hung’s Fishers IGA team is coming good at the right end of the season. Taking their fourth win here, against Max Miller Carpets, who were equal on points with them, they defeated the Carpeters, and at the same time jumped Tankard Dental for third place on the ladder.
– Mallee Bearings 7 (Geoff Peters, George Papanicolaou, Peter Fitzpatrick 2) d Tankard Dental 4 (Arnold Jago 3)
Arnold Jago did his best to keep he and his Tankard Dental teammates in this contest, but despite his best efforts, he could not help manufacture a win.
The Mallee Bearings trio of Peter Fitzpatrick, George Papanicolaou and Geoff Peters picked off the wins where they could and the result was an even performance which earned them the win.
Jago, however, was the form player in this match. Arnold took three singles wins; he and Jessica Dorman cleaned up Fitzpatrick and Papanicolaou in three sets in the first doubles, and when leading Papanicolaou and Peters 8-2 in the fifth set of the second doubles, must have felt robbed when the opposition, after leveling at 10-10, went on to win 12-10. These four were the only rubbers Tankard’s could accumulate on this occasion.
The Mallee Bearings trio all scored a pair of singles wins, all against Jessica Dorman and Claire Ljubic.
Final scores: 7 rubbers to 4 and 24 games to 15.
– Fishers IGA 8 (Ed Hung 3, Michael Hensgen 2, Karly Leach 1) d Max Miller Carpets 3 (Seval Fuat 2, Glen Bell 1)
The fruits of Ed Hung’s coaching are now starting to show in this pennant. Ed has spent the season giving tips to teammates Karly Leach and Michael Hensgen, and in this round 9 clash it all came together with a big win over Max Miller Carpets.
After taking three singles wins himself, Michael Hensgen played controlled table tennis to pick up two wins, and Karly Leach, one.
Hensgen started the ball rolling for Fishers in the first rubber, downing Sabrina Fitzpatrick 11-4, 11-4, 15-13. And in the final rubber he picked up his second rubber, this time against Glen Bell, winning 5, 9 and 9. In the second doubles, he and Hung, after being down 6-11, 11-5, 9-11, got the better of Max Miller Carpets captain Seval Fuat and partner Glen Bell, and took the final two sets 11-5, 11-9.
Karly Leach’s contribution was a confidence boosting victory over Fitzpatrick. Karly has found the going a bit tougher in this pennant, but proved her worth here, when, after losing the first set 7-11, bounced back in the next three, taking them 3, 8 and 9. This match was played after her doubles victory with Hung, against Fuat and Fitzpatrick. In a very tense affair, the Fishers pair took a well earned win 12-10, 13-11, 9-11, 15-13.
Seval Fuat took two wins for Max Millers, and Glen Bell one.
Final scores: 8 rubbers to 3 and 26 games to 14.
– Spanline 6 (Leon Brown, Tony Malycha 2, Cole Keegan 1) d Weightmans Packaging 5 (Lee Thomas 3, Lachlan Kelly 1)
In a big night, Spanline captain Leon Brown played in two winning sides. As well as filling-in in Pennant 1, Brown was able to steer his team to a close win over Weightmans Packaging.
The biggest obstacle to a win was Weightmans captain Lee Thomas. Thomas took three singles wins, and with Lachlan Kelly, the first doubles.
Spanline, however, kept their nerve. Brown and Tony Malycha took two singles wins each, Cole Keegan one. And the second doubles fell easily to Keegan and Brown, three sets to love.
Brown and Malycha looked to have the first doubles, against Thomas and Kelly in their keeping, too. Leading two sets to love, they saw their opponents lift their games to draw level and then take the fifth set easily 11-4.
There were two other good five set contests. The first between opposing captains saw Brown take the game right up to Thomas, but after leading two sets to one, his game fell off slightly and Thomas took the final two sets 7 and 5. Later, in an equally entertaining match, Tony Malycha got the better of Lachlan Kelly – he too trailed two sets to one 11-9, 8-11, 3-11, but was determined to get win after the disappointment of his doubles. He made sure of it, taking the last two sets 12-10, 11-7.
Final scores: 6 rubbers to 5 and 23 games to 19.
PENNANT THREE:
The three winning sides this week repeated the result of their meetings in Round 4. The three winning teams are at the head of the ladder, and extend their advantage over the bottom half of the competition. The make-up of the final four is pretty much settled; Bishop Builders on two wins could equal Max Miller Carpets on three wins next week, but would need a big percentage boost also to dislodge the Builders from a spot in the finals.
– Dunkley Scales 9 (Jeff Hards, Mukhwinder Mukhwinder 3, Leonie Dunkley 2) d Max Miller Carpets 2 (Paul Fitzpatrick 1)
Dunkley Scales were untroubled in this match, dropping just two rubbers in a 9-2 win.
Both Jeff Hards and Mukhwinder Mukhwinder took three singles wins, and Leonie Dunkley two. The Scalers also took one of the doubles matches to give them their nine rubbers.
Dunkley Scales number two Jeff Hards showed his continued improvement in this match, easily defeating opposing captain Jol Peters in three sets, and in the second round of singles downing Ali Mohammad also in three sets. He faced much sterner opposition from Paul Fitzpatrick, however – Fitzpatrick refusing to give in, and only conceding 11-6 in the fifth set.
Mukhwinder Mukhwinder continued his great season, in picking up his three wins. He downed Paul Fitzpatrick in four sets, Jol Peters pushed him to the fifth set, but lost that 5-11, and Mukhwinder dominated Ali Mohammad, winning that rubber in three.
Leonie Dunkley was the only one to drop a singles, this to Paul Fitzpatrick. Earlier Dunkley had been untroubled in her contest with Ali Mohammad, taking that in three sets, and in the last round of singles, after dropping the first set, defeated Jol Peters in four. But in between times she met Paul Fitzpatrick. Fitzpatrick was at his tenacious best in this match; sets alternated, with Fitzpatrick taking the fifth set 11-8 to record the only singles rubber for his team for the night.
This win by Fitzpatrick was off the back of a doubles win by he and captain Jol Peters over Dunkley and Hards. The Max Miller Carpets pair lost the first set 6-11, but some very determined play gave them the second set 17-15. They got the better of their opponents after that, taking the next two sets 11-5, 11-9.
A disappointing loss for Max Miller’s, but they remain in the top four.
Final scores: 9 rubbers to 2 and 30 games to 12.
– Weightmans Packaging 6 (Matt Avers, Rachel Fitzpatrick 2, Chris King 1) d Bishop Builders 5 (Kalif Shortt 3, Helen Frania 1)
Weightmans Packaging played a better team game in this win over Bishop Builders.
Weightmans captain Matt Avers, and his number two Rachel Fitzpatrick took two singles wins apiece, whilst their number three, Chris King subbing for Winston Easterbrook, took one.
It was Kalif Shortt, however, who played the best table tennis in this match. Captaining Bishop Builders, Shortt, for the sixth time this season, and for the fifth time in a row, took three singles wins. He partnered Helen Frania to a win in the second doubles to give his team a chance of a possible win. It was not to be however, as only one other rubber was won by the Builders, Helen Frania defeating King in the final rubber.
Matt Avers’ two wins came from his contests with Demi Green and Helen Frania. He was not greatly troubled, downing Green in three sets, and Frania in four. Fitzpatrick’s two wins came against the same two players, and whilst she also defeated Green in three, her win against Frania turned out to be deciding rubber of this contest. Rachel took the first two sets 11-6, 11-9, but Frania struck back in the next two, taking them 11-2, 15-13. The fifth set was nip and tuck, but Rachel hung on to a slender lead to win 11-9. That was the only five set contest of the whole night, and ultimately decided the winning side.
Final scores: 6 rubbers to 5 and 20 games to 18.
– Sunny Daily 8 (Mohammad Karam 3, Tom Douglas 2, Soyel Zahidi 1) d Mallee Bearings 3 (Jai Green 2, Ben Hosking 1)
Sunny Daily, without captain Peter Edwards, won this match in a canter. Leading 5 rubbers to 3 at the completion of the second round of singles, they conceded just a single further rubber.
Playing at number three for Sunny Daily, Mohammad Karam had a great night, winning three singles, and partnering Tom Douglas to victory against Jai Green and Quentin Clarke. Karam was in great form against opposing captain Jai Green, winning that match 2, 9 and 4. He dropped a set to Ben Hosking, but was still in control to register an 11-3, 8-11, 13-11, 11-3 win. His third win against opposite number Quentin Clarke was also a three setter, but he had to work for it, winning 11-9, 11-8, 11-10.
Team mate Tom Douglas, similarly had a good night. After a hard-fought four set win against Clarke in the first rubber 15-13, 13-15, 11-8, 11-8, Douglas later on came from two sets to one down to overcome his opposite number Ben Hosking. Between these two matches Douglas almost caused the upset of the night when he came within a couple of points of defeating Mallee Bearings’ captain Jai Green. Green took the first two sets of this clash 13-11, 11-4, Douglas struck back 11-7, 11-9 in the third and fourth, and narrowly went down in the fifth 11-9. A couple of rubbers later Douglas and Soyel Zahidi accounted for Green and Hosking in the second doubles 11-5, 6-11, 11-5, 11-6.
Zahidi, whilst playing his regular Pennant 4 match, filled in for Sunny Daily captain Peter Edwards. Zahidi gave solid support to his team mates, pushing both Ben Hosking and Jai Green to four sets in those singles, before scoring a win against Quentin Clarke in a good five set contest. Zahidi led two sets to one, but dropped his guard and Clarke was back in a flash to level two sets all. Zahidi hung on in the fifth, however, to take it 11-8.
For Mallee Bearings, Jai Green took two wins (against Zahidi and Douglas), and Ben Hosking one (against Zahidi).
Final scores: 8 rubbers to 3 and 28 games to 17.
PENNANT FOUR:
With one round to go three teams are separated by one win, currently Sunny Daily have six wins while Max Miller Carpets and Fishers IGA have recorded five wins each. The final round will feature top team Sunny Daily up against Fishers IGA while the Carpeters will play Pinnacle Packers who cannot be discounted when the finals commence. Mathematically we could see three teams finish the season on six wins.
The finals is a two week series with team one versus team four and team two up against team three. These matches are knockout with both winners going through to the grand final.
– Sunny Daily 7 (Kim Avers, Angela Pryor 2, Chelsey Avers 1); d Max Miller Carpets 4 (Wayne Pryor 2, John Fitzpatrick, Therese Fitzpatrick 1)
Sunny Daily with a 7-4 win over Max Miller Carpets now have moved one game clear at the top of the ladder with one round to play. The very first game of the night was a real highlight with Sunny Daily number two player Chelsey Avers matched up against another young talent Therese Fitzpatrick. This was a marathon with Chelsey taking the points 11-6 9-11 9-11 12-10 11-5 in what was an entertaining match between two players of the future. Later in the match Therese was involved in another five setter, this time up against Angela Pryor. This was another top class match and was watched closely by Graeme O’Neill who has been coaching both girls on a Monday night. In a marathon Therese grabbed the points 3-11 11-9 13-11 11-13 12-10. Angela won her other two singles comfortably and team mate Kim Avers continued her good form winning another two singles, she has enjoyed a very consistent season.
For the Carpeters Wayne Pryor won two singles while Sunny Daily took control in the doubles winning both which assisted the cause at the end of the night.
– Fishers IGA 5 (Shirley Whitecross, Rahullah Mirzai 2) d Pinnacle Packers 4 (Soyel Zahidi, Sanam Preet 2)
Both sides were a player short going into this match while Sanam Preet came in to the Packers side to replace Matt Demarco. This match was a two versus two contest and in this format the doubles are normally crucial and this is how the result panned out.
In the only doubles Fishers pair Shirley Whitecross and Rahullah started slowly but then were able to take control against Soyel Zahidi and Sanam Preet. The Fishers pair were successful 7-11 11-5 11-7 12-10 and with the singles shared this doubles victory was enough for Fishers IGA to grab a 5-4 win in a shortened match.
In the wash up for the victors Shirley Whitecross maintained her lead of one in the singles aggregate with two wins. Shirley had her hands full with Soyel Zahidi going down in straight sets. Since beginning during this season Soyel has improved greatly and he is another who has benefitted from Monday night training. Shirley’s team mate Rahullah also won two singles and his four set victory 11-4 11-6 4-11 13-11 over Soyel was important.
For the Packers Sanam Preet played well defeating Rahullah in a lengthy five setter 8-11 11-13 11-8 11-8 11-7 a great fight back in his first match of competition table tennis. Sanam is the brother of Mukhwinder from pennant three and he too has been showing good form on a Monday night.
