Rnd 4 saw Rick McMeekin facing Wayne Carmichael with the possibility of dropping a game behind on the Aggregate standings always likely. With Gav and Kate facing off on a winner take all outright Aggregate leader, we expected a fierce battle. Had Dad mellowed over the years? Would he go easy in this high stakes game. Richie took the game out much to the dissapointment of Kate. Not sure what Christmas will be like for Richie this season. And after all the hoopla, we have a new Aggregate leader after 4 rounds: Gavin “Richie” Carmichael leading Kate and Rick by one.We can see the glimmer in the eye already!
PENNANT ONE:
In what is developing into an even table tennis season Fishers IGA were the big movers in round four action of the Sunraysia Table Tennis summer pennant. Fishers IGA were able to account for opponents Max Miller Carpets 8-3 in a strong display. In doing so Fishers moved from fifth and now occupy second by percentage. Only two wins separate first to sixth with next round the half way mark. This is a pleasing feature for the grading committee.
– Fishers IGA 8 (Wayne Carmichael 3, Lee Thomas 2, Arthur Paar 1) d Max Miller Carpets 3 (Rick McMeekin 2, Sony Sefer 1)
On paper the Fishers, Max Miller Carpets clash, which took place on centre court, looked like it would be a close result however it did not eventuate with Fishers dominating proceedings. In an even team performance Wayne Carmichael, Lee Thomas and Arthur Paar won three, two and one singles respectively. In addition Fishers were successful in both doubles to cap off a comprehensive win. Of the five set matches which took place three were one by Fishers. Of the five setters undoubtedly the match of the night and possibly of the season to date was the singles between Wayne Carmichael and Rick McMeekin. Again this was a classic between these two as it always seems to be. Carmichael grabbed the edge early winning the first two games, however McMeekin then took control winning the next two games and taking a two points to love lead in the fifth. Carmichael regained the ascendancy and a brave McMeekin maintained the pressure but it was Carmichael who prevailed 11-5 11-8 8-11 9-11 11-9. This had again been a great match between two talented players.
Fishers number two Lee Thomas enjoyed her best form for the season winning two singles and a doubles. She accounted for fill in and new dad Sony Sefer in straight sets to get her team off to an ideal start. Later Lee was too consistent for Graeme O’Neil winning 11-9 8-11 11-0 11-9.
– Tankard Dental 6 (Nicholas Dorman, Kate Carmichael 2, Cole Keegan 1) d Weightmans Packaging 5 (Gavin Carmichael 3, Peter Bishop 1)
After a stumble last round the generation Y combination of Tankard Dental were able to grab the outright lead on the ladder with a 6-5 victory over Weightmans Packaging on the grand stand court. With the scores at five rubbers all the fast improving Cole Keegan was able to outlast the experienced Peter Midgley 12-10 11-9 12-14 11-7 to give his team the points in what was a close tussle all night. Keegan’s team mates Nicholas Dorman and Kate Carmichael won two singles each and the doubles were shared.
For Weightmans Packaging Gavin Carmichael won three singles and now heads the singles aggregate. In this match Gavin was matched up against daughter Kate and while she wrong footed him on occasions as she manages to against many the older Carmichael was able to prevail in three. Good to see Peter Bishop back hitting as he was filling in for the holidaying Bernadette Fitzpatrick. Peter’s sneaky chop game enabled him to pick up a singles win and despite a lengthy break from the game he looked to have lost no form.
– Mallee Bearings 6 (Mark Ljubic 3, Kevin Johns 2) d Dunkley Scales 5 (Matt Ljubic 2, Ed Hung, Ashley Morrison 1)
Mallee Bearings with a 6-5 win over Dunkley Scales, on the stage court, recorded their second win of the season. This was a battle of the Ljubic’s with Mark skippering Mallee Bearings and son Matt leading Dunkley’s. With the match at four rubbers all these two fought out a four setter with father Mark taking the win 11-6 11-8 9-11 11-7. Ljubic senior’s team mate Kevin Johns then amazingly grabbed the points for his team when he defeated Ed Hung in a tense five setter. Hung won the first two games narrowly with Johns striking back to level the match at two rubbers all. When Hung took a 9-4 lead in the fifth the match looked all over however with his never say die attitudeJohns in a dramatic comeback was able to win the last seven points of the match to steal victory 9-11 9-11 11-4 11-8 11-9. This had been an a “Lazarus” like comeback and capped off a good night for the veteran winning two singles and the doubles he participated in with Mark Ljubic.
PENNANT TWO: –
After three close rounds of this competition, Fishers IGA moved to the head of the table by a game, after this week defeating Mallee Bearings. Tankard Dental and Pinnacle Packers both took their second win, keeping the race for second on the ladder all about percentage.
– Tankard Dental 7 (Jessica Dorman, Matt Avers 2, Brian Hosking 1) d Max Miller Carpets 4 (Aidan Moore 2, Andrew Alderton, Peter Edwards 1)
With the assistance of wins in both doubles games, Tankard Dental scored an impressive win over Max Miller Carpets.
Tankard Dental captain Matt Avers, and Jessica Dorman, subbing for Peter Fitzpatrick, came away with two singles wins, andBrian Hosking was the victor in a close five set contest against Andrew Alderton, which gave his team the required six rubbers.
Max Miller Carpets did not really get into the match, even though the score sheet shows two rubbers all after the first four games. In that score was a surprise, to Matt Avers at least, win to Andrew Alderton over Avers in the opening rubber. Alderton is proving to be a tough opponent, and his win here only reinforces that. Alderton was down 12-10, 9-11, 6-11, but then took control to take the last two sets 11-6, 12-10.
Final scores: 7 rubbers to 4 and 25 games to 18.
– Pinnacle Packers 6 (Tony Malycha, Glen Bell 2, Jeff Hards 1) d Weightmans Packaging 5 (Terry Martin 3, Seval Fuat 1)
Pinnacle Packers took the last two rubbers to take a last gasp win against Weightmans Packaging in this round 4 match.
Terry Martin, subbing for Weightmans captain Reece Kurrle put his side in a position to capitalize for a win, but steady play by Pinnacle Packers trio Tony Malycha (2 wins), Glen Bell (2 wins) and Jeff Hards (1 win) was the combination to take the four premiership points.
Malycha and Martin met in the third round of singles when they both had at that point two wins apiece. Malycha took the first two sets against Martin 11-6, 11-9, but Martin struck back strong in the fourth 11-4, and continued on in the next two sets winning them also 11-7, 11-6.
That win gave his side the lead 5-4, but that became 5-5 after Jeff Hards downed Jol Peters in straight sets and set up the decider between Glen Bell and Seval Fuat. Fuat won the first two sets 11-6, 11-5, but then ran out of puff; Bell took the third 11-3, the fourth 11-9, and came home strongly in the fifth 11-6 to give his team the win.
Final scores: 6 rubbers to 5 and 21 games to 17.
– Fishers IGA 6 (Geoff Peters, Arnold Jago 2, Jeremy Corrin 1) d Mallee Bearings 5 (Josh Carmichael 3, Brendan Alderton 1)
Josh Carmichael again took three singles wins, but on this occasion it was not enough to get his side home.
Carmichael dropped only one set on his way to the three wins, and with Karly Leach took the second doubles against Arnold Jago and Jeremy Corrin.
Only Brendan Alderton could add to Weightmans’ score, which he did in his first singles game against Jeremy Corrin.
Fishers are enjoying a run of wins, thanks to the good form of captain Arnold Jago and his number three Geoff Peters. These two again captured two singles wins, both defeating Brendan Alderton and Karly Leach, and with Jeremy Corrin also taking a win against Leach, the first doubles win by Jago and Peters in five sets over Carmichael and Alderton proved the difference between the teams.
Final scores: 6 rubbers to 5 and 22 games to 21.
PENNANT THREE: –
The clash of the two top teams saw Dunkley Scales maintain their unbeaten record after round 4 after a big win over Fishers IGA and Pinnacle Packers keep Mallee Bearings winless.
– Dunkley Scales 9 (Ajay Chowdhry, Kim Avers 3, Hamish Clark 2) d Fishers IGA 2 (Mick Bacon 1)
The Dunkley Scales pair of Ajay Chowdhry and Kim Avers had a big night out, both taking three singles wins, on their way to recording a 9 rubbers to 2 victory over Fishers IGA.
Chowdhry only dropped one set in singles play, this to opposing number one Mick Bacon. He and Avers proved too good in their doubles match too, coming from behind to defeat Bacon and Ben Hosking, who was filling-in for absentee Soyel Zahidi, 11-7, 6-11, 4-11, 11-8, 11-6.
Avers, too, played well, dropping only two sets in her singles play, after playing four set contests against Bacon and Hosking.
Hamish Clark, subbing for John Fitzpatrick, chipped in with two rubbers, these against Hosking and Shirley Whitecross.
Fishers were not left with much;Mick Bacon took a singles win against Clark, and in the second doubles, he and Whitecross had a morale boosting win over Chowdhry and Clark, coming from two sets to love down to win in five.
Final scores: 9 rubbers to 2 and 29 games to 12.
– Pinnacle Packers 7 (Sam Hensgen, Cambell McKenzie 3, Stephan Ljubic 1) d Mallee Bearings 4 (Colin Moore, Tom Morrison, Quentin Clark 1)
Pinnacle Packers proved to be too good for Mallee Bearings in this match with Sam Hensgen and Cambell McKenzie both taking three singles wins.
Hensgen, captaining the side in the absence of Peter Mikhaeil, was a little rusty, not having played since the Winter Pennant, but showed his talent with three four set victories. Of the three wins, it was against Quentin Clark that he had the most trouble. Clark took the first set 11-5, and came within a shot of taking the next three, but Hensgen held him out to take the last three sets 11-9, 13-11, 16-14.
McKenzie continues to improve, and here dropped just one set in his three wins, this to opposing number one Colin Moore. Apart from that one set loss, he was in control of the game, winning 11-7, 12-14, 11-3, 11-9.
But despite playing so well individually, Hensgen and McKenzie were denied their doubles match against Moore and junior pennant player Tom Morrison. The Mallee Bearings pair took the first set 11-8, only to lose the next two to Hensgen and McKenzie 12-10, 11-7. It was anybody’s game at that point, and Moore and Morrison took the game away from their opponents in the last two sets, winning them 7 and 4.
The Packers did take the second doubles, though, Hensgen and Stephan Ljubic, subbing for Grant Stone, running through Moore and Clark 6, 9 and 3.
For Mallee Bearings, in addition to the first doubles, each player took a singles win over Stephan Ljubic.
Final scores: 7 rubbers to 4 and 25 games to 16.
