ROUND 5

Scoresheets-Summer-2024-Rnd-5.pdf

Happy Birthday Dormo ….. Former Stta El Presidente, Mark Dorman celebrates his 66th Birthday this week. We cast back to 2015 when Kate pulled a showstopper of a surprise on match night. And we know how Dormo loves these kinds of surprises !

PENNANT ONE:

At the completion of round five matches of the Sunraysia Table Tennis Summer pennant each team has now played each other and ladder leader Weightman’s Packaging with a narrow 6-5 win over second placed Regional Taxation Services are the only undefeated team.

With the second to fourth teams all losing the competition has evened up with only two wins separating second to sixth on the ladder.

An amazing statistic in this round was that all the captains played outstanding five sets singles matches against each other with the winner of each match leading their respective teams to victory.

– Cookes Pools & Spas 8 (Mark Dorman 3, Dylan Wood 2, Ed Hung 1) d Tankard Dental 3 (Paul Kealley 2, Rohan Reimers 1)

With Cooke’s Pools and Spas skipper Mark Dorman winning three singles for the first time this season his team proved too strong for opponents Tankard Dental winning 8-3.

Included in Dorman’s victories was a marathon five set win over fellow lefty and opposition skipper Rohan Reimers 11-8 8-11 11-13 11-7 14-12 an exciting n TV conclusion. Dorman combined with team mates Dylan Wood and Ed Hung to win both doubles. In a commanding victory Wood won  two singles in support of Dorman while Hung won one.

After a strong start to the season winning their first two matches Tankard Dental have dropped their past three and have been joined by Cooke’s who have now have also won two.

– Weightmans Packaging 6 (Wayne Carmichael 3, Russell Walder, Lee Leeson 1) d Regional Taxation Services 5 (Kate Carmichael, Thanh Nguyen 2)

For Weightman’s skipper Wayne Carmichael recovered from two games down to defeat niece Kate Carmichael in a lengthy five setter 5-11 9-11 11-8 11-6 11-5 leading his team to a 6-5 victory.

At one stage RTS took a 4-2 lead and when Weightman’s number two Russell Walder trailed one game to two against Jason Gifkins, Weightman’s were under the pump. In an outstanding five set contest it was a match winning  comeback by Walder to win 10-12 11-4 10-12 12-10 12-10 , an outstanding contest.

For RTS it was oh so close to inflicting the first defeat on Weightman’s but it was not to be despite Kate Carmichael and Thahn Nguyen winning two singles each as well as winning their doubles .

– Choices Flooring Mildura 7 (Reece Kurrle 3, Leon Brown 2, Daniel Jansen 1) d Mallee Bearings 4 (Jackson Tung 2, Liam Wood 1)

– Weightman’s Packaging 6 Josh Arnold (2), Harry Gujral (2), James Jarvis (1) defeated Cookes Pools and Spas 5 Ashley Morrison (2), David Sergi (2), Nhat Dat (0)

A close win for Weightman’s in round 5 which featured some very tight matches all through the night, including a lengthy five-setter in which David Sergi narrowly defeated opposing captain Josh Arnold.

To start off the evening, Gujral took on Dat and took the win in three sets 12-10, 11-4, 14-12. Then the two captains faced off, Morrison taking the first set 11-7, Arnold retaliating by winning the next two 11-7, 11-9. Morrison clenched the fourth 11-9, but Arnold prevailed in the fifth, winning 11-9. Sergi and Jarvis were up next, Sergi securing the win in four, 11-3, 11-9, 4-11, 11-7. On to the first doubles which matched up Morrison and Sergi against Arnold and Gujral, Cookes opened strong, taking the first 11-8, fumbled the next two sets, losing 10-12, 8-11, but then recovering and taking the win 11-8, 11-3.

Cookes skipper Morrison then went up against Gujral and after a brief struggle, took home the goods 5-11, 11-9, 11-9, 13-11. Next up: Jarvis versus Dat. Another riveting five-setter in which Jarvis won the first 11-8, Dat the second 9-11, Jarvis then secured the third 11-8, Dat firing back in the fourth 7-11 and Jarvis coming out on top in the fifth 11-3, bringing the game score to 3-3. In what was perhaps the upset game of the night, Sergi battled it out against Arnold and won after five gruelling sets, 5-11, 12-10, 11-8, 8-11 and 13-11. But Weightman’s wouldn’t be swayed by this loss and they took the second doubles in three 12-10, 11-6, 11-7, the score now 4-4.

With the finish line in sight, Morrison took out Jarvis with little difficulty, 11-6, 11-7, 11-4. It was looking good for Cookes but in the ensuing match, Gujral proved to good for Sergi, winning the first 11-3, Sergi narrowly taking the second 12-10, and Gujral cementing his win in the third and fourth, 11-7, 11-7. With the score now 5-5, the tie-breaker commenced. Dat fought hard but couldn’t best Arnold, going down in four, 2-11, 11-6, 2-11, 6-11.

Final Score 6 rubbers to 5 and 24 games to 21.

Mallee Meats 6 John Fitzpatrick (2), Mark Cleary (3) defeated Pinnacle Packers 3 Rasin Bhuiyan (2), Bey Hwak (1)

A short night for Meats and Packers due to the absence of several players; Riley Clemence on Meats’s side and Ryan Peterson on Packer’s. These forfeited games gave each team 2 free rubbers each. The rest of the night carried on as usual.

The first game saw Fitzpatrick take on Hwak and win in three, 11-3, 11-9, 11-4. Teammate Cleary then stepped up and took a major victory over Bhuiyan, grabbing the first two sets 11-8, 11-8, dropping the third 7-11, but securing the win in the fourth 11-4. Fitzpatrick and Cleary then paired up to take on Bhuiyan and Hwak in the first and only doubles of the night, winning decisively in three 11-3, 11-1, 11-3.

Cleary then secured his third singles win for the evening, dispatching Hwak in three, 11-3, 11-3, 11-4. Then in the last game of the night, Bhuiyan took on Fitzpatrick and although he had succumbed to Cleary earlier in the night, he had little trouble against Fitzpatrick; taking the win in straight sets, 11-7, 11-7, 12-10.

Final score 6 rubbers to 3 and 18 games to 10.

The night saw some nail biting clashes, with the Mallee verses Regional battle producing four five setters and some exciting highlights in other pairings.

It was unfortunate to hear that Andrew Jeffries would not be able to finish off the Summer Season, due to a problem with his health. He will be missed by his Team and Pennant 3 players.

– Sammy’s Slammers 6 (Deegan Kerslake 3, Sam Campbell 2) d Exposed Signage/Apparel 5 (Steve Parker 2, Ted Cleary, Conner Burnett 1)

Teams : Sammy’s – # 1 – Sam Campbell, # 2 – Deegan Kerslake and # 3 – Raylee Waugh. Exposed – # 1 Steve Parker, # 2 – Ted Cleary and # 3 – Conner Burnett.

There were several special moments throughout this encounter.

Firstly, Sammy’s # 2, Deegan, had an amazing night, giving his team just what it needed, landing his three singles wins, plus his Doubles, where Steve and Connor pushed him and Sam to five sets.

Steve and Sam won two of their singles comfortably in three sets,

but I think one of the high points, was Connors first individual singles win. He faced up to Raylee Waugh, with the first set going to 13. It was clear over the past few weeks, that Connor’s game was taking on a new flare and a win was imminent. Raylee made it a good fight, but it was Connor’s night, winning in 4.

Results : Raylee lost to Ted (9/11, 5/11, 9/11). Sam defeated Connor (11/9, 11/8, 11/6). Deegan defeated Steve (11/9, 11/9, 10/12, 11/9). TEAMS : Dunkely – # 1 – Koby Grace, # 2 – Hayden Wilson and # 3 – Selma Mayne (filling in for Ildi Healy). Weightmans Packaging – # 1 – Nick Kiapekos, # 2 Maria Starikov and # 3 Gary Leach.

Nick would have been very pleased with his night, collecting three Singles and one Doubles to help his team to its victory. His match with Koby, led to five sets, with Nick’s experience enough to conquer Koby’s slick game play.

Maria was beaten by Koby, but not before she snatched the first set, giving him a wakeup call. But Maria’s determination allowed her to pick up 2 wins for the team, with her contest against Hayden bringing out rally after rally.

Results : Selma lost to Maria (4/11, 1/11,10/12), Koby defeated Gary (11/3, 11/8, 11/8), Nick defeated Hayden (11/7, 11/6, 11/9), Koby and Hayden defeated Nick and Maria (11/7, 11/8, 7/11, 11/3), Koby defeated Maria (15/13, 11/6, 11/8, 11/6), Selma lost to Nick (4/11, 3/11, 3/11), Hayden defeated Gary (12/10, 12/10, 11/9), Koby and Selma lost to Nick and Gary (11/7, 6/11, 11/6, 14/12), Koby lost to Nick (7/11, 11/7, 11/9, 9/11, 7/11), Hayden lost to Maria (13/11, 9/11, 4/11, 4/11) and Selma lost to Gary (1/11, 8/11, 7/11).

TEAMS : Mallee – # 1 Karly Leach, # 2 Curtis Crabtree and # 3 Jen Leach. Regional – # 1 Steve Pongrac, # 2 – Tom Gilmour and # 3 Nathan Beard.

Curtis started his night off with a brilliant win over Regionals number one player, Steve, with some well thought out shots, before helping Karly to the first Doubles win. Both Tom and Curtis finished with two Singles wins,

with Tom seizing the match against Curtis after some thrilling spin and chop shots from the pair.
