Tankard Dental after a loss last round snatched victory from the jaws of defeat to move back to second place on the ladder in round nine of the Sunraysia Table Tennis pennant. Their opponents Regional Taxation Services who are languishing at the foot of the ladder will rue the loss of the second doubles when they held three match points.

– Tankard Dental 6 (Reece Kurrle 3, Thanh Nguyen, Paul Kealley 1) d Regional Taxation Services 5 (Rohan Reimers, Mark Dorman 2)

The RTS pair of Rohan Reimers and Edi Re took a two games to one lead over Reece Kurrle and Paul Kealley and in the tense fourth three times took a match point only for their opponents to survive and take the fourth 15-13, Kurrle and Kealley then proved too steady winning the fifth, an opportunity lost for the RTS team. Tankards then steadied winning two of the last three singles to win 6-5.

Tankards returned to second place with this victory and have won five of their past six matches which is a better record than any other team. Skipper Reece Kurrle for the second time this season won three singles although he was pressed by opposing number three Edi Re winning in a tough five set slog.

– Cookes Pools & Spas 7 (Kate Carmichael, Casper McCarthy 2, Russell Walder 1) d Choices Flooring Mildura 4 (Wayne Carmichael 3. Ed Hung 1)

By breaking their three-match losing streak Cookes Pools & Spas have moved to within one point of the top four by defeating Choices Flooring 7-4 despite Wayne Carmichael winning three singles. His five-set win over niece Kate Carmichael was a highlight with the match decided by a scoreline of 7-11 11-4 11-8 9-11 11-7 in Uncle Wayne’s favour.

The doubles matches proved to be the decider in the battle for four points with Kate Carmichael teaming up with teammates Casper McCarthy and Russell Waldder respectively to win both. McCarthy played solid table tennis to win two singles for the second round in succession.

– Mallee Bearings 5 (Joel Thomas 3, Liam Wood 1) d Weightmans Packaging 4 (Jackson Tung, Dylan Wood 2)

In a match where both number three players were absent top team Mallee Bearings maintained their lead at the head of the ladder with a 5-4 victory over fourth placed Weightmans Packaging, Bearings skipper Joel Thomas again won three singles and his four-set win over Jackson Tung was full of many fine attacking shots from both players.

Without a doubt the best match of the night featured the Wood brothers, Dylan for Weightmans exploded out of the blocks winning 11-1 over Liam, they traded many long rallies however Dylans strong forehands resulted in him taking the second narrowly. Older brother Liam then took control winning the next two games to level the match, again in the fifth they traded some strong forehands before Dylan won an excellent match 11-1 12-10 4-11 5-11 11-6, their parents had witnessed a special contest.

– Weightmans Packaging 9 (Quentin Clark, Brendan Alderton 3, James Jarvis 1) d Pinnacle Packers 2 (Peter Midgley, John Fitzpatrick 1)

Last round we did not see the result coming when top of the ladder Weightmans were defeated 1-10 and this round when matched up against Pinnacle Packers the teams looked even however stung by their thumping last week Weightmans were always in control amazingly winning 9-2 to pick the percentage they had previously forfeited.
Packers John Fitzpatrick offered resistance in the first game recovering from a 1-2 deficit to defeat fill in James Jarvis 10-12 11-5 10-12 11-6 11-4.
From this point the only other success was a singles victory by Peter Midgley over James Jarvis.

After a duck last round Weightmans skipper Quentin Clark bounced back to win three singles, he defeated both Andrew Jones and John Fitzpatrick in straight sets but his clash with opposing skipper Peter Midgley was a marathon and won by the barest of margins, what a match in Quentin’s favour 7-11 11-8 11-7 6-11 11-9.
Clarks team mate Brendan Alderton  also played well to win three singles. To complete his hat trick Brendan had to recover from a 1-2 deficit against the persistent John Fitzpatrick to win in five sets.

Winners: Weightmans Packaging  9 rubbers Pinnacle Packers 2 rubbers  Games 29 to 15.

– Choices Flooring Mildura 6 (Jason Gifkins, David Leng, Kevin Johns 2) d Mallee Bearings 5 (Jamie Kealley 2, Sony Sefer 1)

This was the thriller of the round and of the six players, three were filling in for different reasons. For Choices Flooring Kevin Johns is playing for the recently departed from Mildura Jeremy Corrin, while David Leng a long time past player and highly decorated with premiership medals wandered in to the stadium wearing his playing shirt and was quickly talked in to playing for the absent Harry Gujral. Great to see Dave back on the table and amazingly he had his trusty bat with him.
Continuing on the fill-ins Sony Sefer was playing for the injured Mallee Bearings number 2 Terry Martin.

The Choices team were quick out of the blocks winning the first two matches courtesy of Jason Gifkins and Kevin Johns respectively. Gifkins matched up against Sony Sefer and this was a beauty. Sefer took a two games to one lead and Gifkins had to lift to win 7-11 11-7 6-11 11-2 11-9, knowing what we know now a vital comeback from Gifkins.

In all there were four five set matches on this table and all decided by the barest of margins with two going to each team. Both doubles were won by the Mallee Bearing combinations of Jamie Kealley and Sony Sefer and Kealley and Therese Fitzpatrick and both in five set nail biters.

With the second doubles win Mallee Bearings had taken a five – three lead and in the next match when young Jamie Kealley took a two games to love lead over veteran Kevin Johns it looked like the Bearings team were about to bank the four points however you can never write off the wily Johns who narrowly avoided a straight sets loss by grabbing the third 12-10 and then in a monumental struggle Johns took the fourth and fifth in what was an outstanding effort from both players, the final score in John’s favour 5-11 8-11 12-10 13-11 13-11.
Then courtesy of straight sets wins by both David Leng and Jason Gifkins respectively Choices had snatched a 6-5 victory from the jaws of defeat. In an even performance Johns, Leng and Gifkins all won two singles.

Winners: Choices Flooring Mildura 6 rubbers Mallee Bearings 5 rubbers  Games 23 to 20.

– Cookes Pools & Spas 8 (Tom Morrison 3, Marcus Cimino, Josh Arnold 2) d Mallee Meats 3 (Ashley Morrison, Rasin Bhuiyan 1)

This was the battle of fourth and fifth and is was Cookes who kept their finals chances alive by drawing within two points of their opponents Mallee Meats with a strong 8-3 win.
Victory cand with a strong start of 4-0 from which Mallee Meats could not recover although after their slow start they did manage to win three of the next four games but Cookes then won the final three singles to bolster their percentage. In their 4-0 start was included a singles win by Josh Arnold over Ashley Morrison 12-10 11-7 12-10 , this would have to be Josh’s best win in his time in the STTA

For Cookes Tom Morrison was outstanding winning three singles including a straight sets win over father Ashley. Earlier Tom required great concentration to defeat Rasin Bhuiyan in an entertaining five set slog, the final score in Morrison’s favour 11-4 6-11 9-11 11-6 12-10. Morrison’s team mates Marcus Cimino and fill in Josh Arnold both won two singles

Both Tom and Marcus are doing particularly well in the singles aggregate and sit equal third on 17 two wins away from top position. This in particular is outstanding by Marcus as he was graded a number three at the start of the season.

PENNANT FOUR:

With a few fill in’s required once again, it brought about another flip in the Ladder. Dunkley Scales only had one of its permanent players, in Tom Gilmore, with Derek Hung and Bev Metcalf taking on the second and third positions of Deegan Kerslake and Selma Mayne. Jen Leach was unable to contest round nine, with Nikki Mayger filling in for the Mallee Meats team. Tankard Dental and Weightmans Packaging had all their members, which proved to make the difference on the night.

– Tankard Dental 6 (Ildi Healy 2, Nathan Beard, Conner Burnett 1) d Dunkley Scales 5 (Tom Gilmour 3, Derek Hung 2)

Tankard Dental’s Connor Burnett, in his short time playing comp has made huge steps and it was very evident when he came up against Dunkley’s Tom and took him to 5 sets. He didn’t quite make the win, but I’m sure it’s not far off Connor (11/6, 11/4, 11/13, 8/11, 11/5). Ildi Healy marked up a Rubber for Tankard, with another 5 sets required to settle the match with Derek (11/9, 7/11, 6/11, 11/3, 11/8). With Tankard’s Nathan Beard’s tricky game, Bev didn’t stand a chance (11/0, 11/5, 11/4).

Although the first set was a never ending story and the next two went to 12/10, Ildi and Nathan closed the door after 3 sets, in their win over Tom and Derek (19/17, 12/10, 12/10). Tom had to put his head down and bat up to win the battle against Ildi, cleaning up in three sets, to add a Rubber for Dunkley (11/6, 11/5, 11/9). Connor and Bev played out a four setter and Connor added another point to his aggregate and a fourth Rubber for Tankard (11/4, 9/11, 11/6, 11/3). Derek focused in his match against Nathan, grabbing a win after 5 sets (11/8, 9/11, 5/11, 11/9, 11/?).

In a night of Five setter contests, the second set of Doubles fell in favor of Tankard, when Ildi and Connor snatched the win against Tom and Bev (10/12, 11/8, 7/11, 11/5, 11/3).

Ildi came up against one of her friends, in Bev, which must have been tough, when she took the win with ease, to give Dunkley its sixth Rubber to take the nights win (11/4, 11/5, 11/1). In the 5th five set match of the night, Tom collected his third individual win, over Nathan, after a match of rallies (11/5, 11/6, 9/11, 8/11, 11/5). The last match was picked up by Derek, against Connor (11/7, 11/5, 11/2).

WINNERS : Tankard Dental 6 to Dunkley Scales 5.  GAMES 23 to 20.

– Weightmans Packaging 8 (Curtis Crabtree, Gary Leach, Raj Gujral 2) d Mallee Meats 3 (Maria Starikov 3)

Mallee’s Team began with a very convincing win in three sets from Maria Starikov, when she was up against Raj Gujiral (11/2, 11/2, 11/3). Weightmans number one Curtis Crabtree went to five sets when he faced up to Mallee’s number 2 fill in, Nikki Mayger, with both playing some fantastic shots ( 12/10, 5/11, 8/11, 11/6, 11/8). Gary Leach didn’t have a problem marking up a win for Weightmans, in his match against Jake Hines (11/2, 11/6, 11/6).

Curtis and Gary, against Maria and Nikki turned out to be a beauty, in the first Doubles, with Weightmans taking the win (6/11, 11/8, 11/9, 7/11, 14/12).

Maria is so consistent and her never say die game wins so often. This time she came up against Curtis and he pushed her to four sets, but she shut the door at set four (11/5, 4/11, 11/9, 11/4). Raj and Jake had a great tussle, but Jake found it hard to get the win, handing another Rubber to Weightman’s (12/10, 11/7, 11/9). With a five set match from Gary and Nikki, it was a see sawing affair, with Gary snagging his second win (11/9, 9/11, 12/10, 7/11, 11/8).

The last Doubles saw the Weightmans pair of Curtis and Raj too strong for Maria and Jake, penciling in their 6th Rubber to win the night (12/10, 14/12, 11/8).

Curtis rubbed some salt into the wound, winning his match against Jake (11/5,11/5,11/6). Maria raised the wall when she came up against Gary, leaving with a three set win, her third individual win and the only three matches for Mallee Meat (11/5, 11/4, 11/7). The last Rubber was won by Raj against Nikki, which rewarded him with two wins for the night (11/6, 11/7, 11/9).
