PENNANT ONE:

Round five matches of the Sunraysia Table Tennis pennant took place on Wednesday after the school holiday break.

– Cookes Pools & Spas 8 (Joel Thomas 3, Russell Walder 2, Lee Leeson 1) d Tankard Dental 3 (Wayne Carmichael 2, Paul Kealley 1)

In a solid display Cookes Pools & Spas proved too strong for Tankard Dental winning 8-3. Joel Thomas was in fine form winning three singles and in partnership with team mates Lee Leeson and Russell Walder, Cookes tasted success in both doubles. Walder also won two singles and Leeson one to complete a good night for Cookes who occupy third on the ladder one win clear of fourth.

Walder won both his singles in five set slogs, the first against Jackson Murphy 11-8 6-11 11-8 6-11 11-4 a strong finish. Against Paul Kealley Russell prevailed 11-8 6-11 2-11 11-5 11-6 a good recovery after Paul won the second and third comfortably.

Lee Leeson also won her singles in five defeating Jackson Murphy 9-11 11-8 11-9 8-11 11-8

The scoreline may have looked one sided however Tankards were on the wrong end on three very close five set results.

– Regional Taxation Services 7 (Matt Ljubic, Thanh Nguyen 3) d Weightmans Packaging 4 (Jackson Tung, Reece Kurrle, Ed Hung 1)

With both Matt Ljubic and number two Thahn Nguyen in top form winning three singles each Regional Taxation Services proved too steady for opponents Weightmans Packaging winning 7-4.  Ljubic and Nguyen teamed together to win the first doubles to cap off a successful night.

This was Nguyen’s best performance in pennant one defeating three difficult opponents and in doing so assisted his team to consolidate second position on the ladder. Against Jackson Tung , Thahn was off to a flyer taking the first two games, Tung then steadied as expected winning the third and fourth. Thahn took an early ascendancy in the fifth and was in control before Jackson fought back to level at 10 all in a thriller. Thahn was able to stay calm and grabbed the final two points and victory 11-5 12-10 7-11 9-11 13-11 a great contest. Later against opposing number two Reece Kurrle, Thahn was able to win in four sets and in the end he was the difference in the battle for the four points.

– Mallee Bearings 7 (Gavin Carmichael 3, Mark Dorman 2, Rohan Reimers 1) d Max Miller Carpets 4 (Kate Carmichael 2, Leon Brown 1)

Ladder leader Mallee Bearings had their hands full against the winless Max Miller Carpets. This contest featured 5 five setters with all going to the wire in the fifth. In an even team display the Bearings trio of Gavin Carmichael, Mark Dorman and Rohan Reimers won three, two and one singles respectively to keep their unbeaten run intact.

This match went to the wire similar to a contest they played earlier in the season.

Again this went to five sets , at one stage Gavin took a 2-1 lead and Kate levelled to go to a fifth, She took a 5-3 lead in the last before Gavin took the next two points, the match then went point for point , both players receiving some luck with an edge each late in the game. At 9 all Gavin was able to hang on to win 11-8 9-11 11-5 7-11 11-9.

Mark Dorman scored an important win late in the match when playing Leon Brown, Mark took the first 11-8 however Brown raced through the second 11-3 and looked ominous. Dorman fought hard to take the third 12-10 and when he trailed Brown 5-9 in the fourth it looked like another five setter coming up, however Dorman showing real experience and deft touch worked his way back to frustrate Brown and win the fourth 12-10, a great comeback and an important result for his team. At the same time this match was being played Dorman’s team mate Gavin Carmichael was in a close battle with daughter Kate.

The doubles were shared both decided 11-9 in the fifth. The Carpeters showed good glimpses of form and could be considered unlucky. Kate Carmichael won two singles receiving a big scare early when two sets to love down to Rohan Reimers before recovering to win in five sets.

PENNANT TWO:

Weightmans Packaging maintained their one game advantage at the top of the ladder in their win against Max Miller Carpets this week, consigning that team to the bottom of the ladder; in defeating Max Miller Carpets, Pinnacle Packers leapt from fifth to second on the ladder; and Kevin Johns, after a three round break, helped his side trounce Mallee Bearings.

– Weightmans Packaging 7 (Quentin Clark, Andrew Jones 3) d Max Miller Carpets 4 (Jeremy Corrin, Daniel Jansen, John Fitzpatrick 1)

Quentin Clark and Andrew Jones guided Weightmans Packaging to a 7-4 win against Max Miller Carpets in round five action.

Clark and Jones proved too strong in singles play, each winning their three rubbers. Each met resistance of course, Clark needing five sets to get past Max Miller Carpets number three John Fitzpatrick, and Jones also needing five sets to win his match against Max Miller Carpets number two Daniel Jansen.

Their six rubbers combined set the team up for a comfortable win – indeed the match was decided with two rubbers still to go. Therese Fitzpatrick, subbing for Weightmans Packaging number three Tom Morrison, paired well with Clark in the second doubles, and contributed to a straight sets win against her brother John and his captain Jeremy Corrin.

The Weightmans Packaging trio could only extract singles rubbers from the Weightmans Packaging number three, Therese Fitzpatrick, and Corrin and Jansen won the first doubles, a high scoring five setter against Clark and Jones 11-7, 13-11, 6-11, 16-18, 11-7.

Final scores: 7 rubbers to 4 and 25 games to 19.

– Pinnacle Packers 6 (Peter Midgley, Sony Sefer 2, Furqaan Ahmad 1) d Cookes Pools & Spas 5 (Ashley Morrison 3, Josh Arnold 1)

In a big finish, Pinnacle Packers won the final two rubbers to snatch this match from Cookes Pools & Spas.

The match ebbed and flowed throughout the night, Pinnacle Packers leading four rubbers to two midway through the contest, however Cookes Pools & Spas then won the next three rubbers to put themselves in the box seat. But a straight sets win to Pinnacle Packers fill-in number two Sony Sefer against Josh Arnold and a fighting five set thriller which saw Furqaan Ahmad take his first win for the season, over his opposite number Ryan Hensgen, gave the win to his side and in so doing lifted them from fifth to second on the ladder, so close are the teams this season.

Cookes Pools & Spas captain Ashley Morrison kept his lead at the head of the individual aggregate ladder with three wins. Morrison is yet to be defeated this season, and sits three games clear of second placed Peter Midgley and Andrew Jones.

Final scores: 6 rubbers to 5 and 22 games to 18.

– Mallee Meats 9 (Kevin Johns, Terry Martin 3, Therese Fitzpatrick 2) d Mallee Bearings 2 (Jamie Kealley 1)

Mallee Meats captain Kevin Johns missed rounds two, three and four, and clearly refreshed, led his team to a crushing 9-2 victory against Mallee Bearings, the side which sat second on the table going into this round. This loss relegates them to fifth.

Johns took the minimum time in his singles rubbers, winning all in straight sets. Likewise, his number two Terry Martin. Terry easily had his best night of the year. Having won just four games in the previous four rounds, Terry needed a night to get a score which reflected his true ability. Like his captain, he was in fine form, dropping just one set in his three wins.

Therese Fitzpatrick subbed for the absent Mallee Meats number three James Jarvis and kept the smile on her captain’s face by taking two singles rubbers, a straight sets win against her opposite number David Sergi, in four sets against Mallee Bearings number two Marcus Cimino and a fighting five set loss to Jamie Kealley, Mallee Bearings captain.

The doubles rubbers were shared, Johns and Martin too strong for Kealley and Cimino, winning in three, whilst later Kealley and Sergi , after leading two sets to love, defeated Johns and Fitzpatrick in five.

Final scores: 9 rubbers to 2 and 31 games to 8.

PENNANT THREE:

Second placed Tankard Dental defeated third placed Weightmans Packaging this week; fourth placed Mallee Meats downed ladder leaders Regional Taxation Services; and bottom sides Exposed Signage & Apparel and Sammy’s Slammers fought to stay off the bottom of the ladder.

– Tankard Dental 7 (Luca Capizzoto 3, Steve Pongrac 2, Steve Parker 1) d Weightmans Packaging 4 (Sabrina Fitzpatrick 2, Nicole Hunt 1)

Steve Pongrac’s Tankard Dental side gained top spot on the ladder after this round with their seven rubbers to four defeat of third placed Weightmans Packaging.

Tankard Dental were a game behind Regional Taxation Services after round four, but with Regional Taxation Services losing heavily to Mallee Meats (see below), Tankard Dental did enough to take the lead on the ladder with a better percentage.

Once again Luca Capizzoto led the way for his side, winning his three singles, and one doubles. Weightmans Packaging captain Sabrina Fitzpatrick jumped out to an early two sets to love lead in his first rubber, leading 14-12, 11-7, but Luca then came back with a vengeance taking the next three sets 2, 6 and 3. He won easily against Nicole Hunt, and after dropping the first set to Karly Leach 8-11, took the next three to clinch his fourth perfect score for the season.

Pongrac won two singles – in four sets against Hunt, and in five against Karly Leach who must surely feel she was the better player in the match. Karly easily won more points than Steve, 48 to 39, but to the credit of the Tankard Dental captain, she could not finish him off, Pongrac winning 2-11, 11-8, 11-9, 4-11, 11-9.

For Weightmans Packaging, captain Sabrina Fitzpatrick won two rubbers, and number three Nicole Hunt one, whilst the unlucky Karly Leach went winless.

This loss see Weightmans Packaging drop from third to fifth.

Final scores: 7 rubbers to 4 and 25 games to 22.

– Mallee Meats 8 (Michael Hensgen 3, Hamish Smyth 2, Nick Kiapekos 1) d Regional Taxation Services 3 (Shaun Gifford 2, Leo Parker 1)

Mallee Meats caused the upset of the round in downing previously undefeated ladder leaders Regional Taxation Services. And a big win it was too, eight rubbers to three.

Mallee Meats captain Michael Smyth is really starting to hit his straps now; he has lost just two singles rubbers for the season and is second on the aggregate ladder, just one win behind Luca Capizzoto. Two of his wins in the match were in straight sets, the third, a five set win against Leo Parker, a much improved/improving junior. In a very close match, Smyth just managed to keep his young opponent at bay, winning 52 points to Parker’s 51, 8-11, 11-9, 11-13, 11-9, 11-9.

Michael’s son, Hamish, playing at number three continues to grow in confidence in this adult company, picking up two wins in this game. Firstly, a close three set win against fellow junior Leo Parker, then in the final rubber of the night a dogged five set win against Rodney Galvin 14-12, 5-11, 12-10, 9-11, 11-5.

Mallee Meats importantly took both doubles rubbers, Michael Smyth and Nick Kiapekos just edging Shaun Gifford and Leo Parker in the first doubles 7-11, 11-9, 11-6, 4-11, 11-9, and later father and son Michael and Hamish Smyth too good for Gifford and Galvin, winning in four sets.

Not too much for Regional Taxation Services to cheer about unfortunately, captain Shaun Gifford kept to two wins, and Leo Parker made to work very hard to win in five sets against his opposite number Nick Kiapekos in the second last rubber.

Regional Taxation Services are now replaced at the top of the ladder by Tankard Dental, and Mallee Meats go from fourth to third.

Final scores: 8 rubbers to 3 and 27 games to 17.

– Exposed Signage/Apparel 6 (Levi Williams 3, Riley Clemence, Dave Tanner 1) d Sammy’s Slammers 5 (Marita Grace 2, Hamish Smyth, Koby Grace 1)

Exposed Signage & Apparel kept themselves in touch with the rest of the competition with a fighting six rubbers to five win against Sammy’s Slammers.

Sammy’s Slammers led early in the match, four rubbers to one, and with two rubbers to go again led five rubbers to four, but a great four set win by Riley Clemence against fill-in Hamish Smyth (subbing for Nhat Dat), 11-9, 12-10, 4-11, 12-10, then a straight sets win by Exposed Signage & Apparel captain Levi Williams over Sammy’s Slammers number three Koby Grace stole the match from them.

Williams was instrumental in the win for his team, as he won his three singles rubbers, and after having lost the first doubles rubber with Dave Tanner in five sets against Marita Grace and Hamish Smyth, he combined

with Clemence to take the second doubles, another five set encounter. Williams and Clemence must have caught their opposition unawares in the first set, taking that 11-1, but after that it was set for set, almost point for point, the Exposed Signage & Apparel duo winning 11-1, 8-11, 11-8, 8-11, 11-9. Clemence also will take confidence from this match, having partnered in this close doubles rubber, then his later four set win to (at that stage) level the scores at five all.

Sammy’s Slammers for their part played well, thing was, Exposed Signage & Apparel played a little bit better. Captain Marita Grace won two singles rubbers, just failing to make it three with a five set loss to opposing captain Levi Williams. Number two Hamish Smyth, subbing for the absent Nhat Dat, won just one singles rubber, was doing double duty, also playing his own match with Mallee Meats, so had hit a few more balls than his opponents in this match. Koby Grace was impressive, his win coming against Clemence in the opening rubber 11-8, 11-9, 14-12, and later taking Exposed Signage & Apparel number Dave Tanner to five sets.

Final scores: 6 rubbers to 5 and 23 games to 20.

PENNANT FOUR:

Two big wins, firstly to Dunkley Scales over Tankard Dental sees them take a commanding lead at the head of the ladder, and Weightmans Packaging a solid second after defeating Mallee Meats.

– Dunkley Scales 10 (Katrina Clifford, Costa Skiadas 3, Nathan Beard 2)  d Tankard Dental 1 (Maria Starikov 1)

Dunkley Scales only conceded six sets in their ten rubbers to one demolition of Tankard Dental.

Both Kosta Skiadas and Katrina Clifford won three singles rubbers, and Nathan Beard, subbing for Derek Hung, two. Skiadas was little troubled in his three wins, losing just one set to Tankard Dental number three Andrew McMahon in the final rubber. Clifford, likewise lost just one set, that being the very first set she played against McMahon, but she then took the next three to get the win.

Beard was impressive in his wins, winning both in straight sets, but in the third he came up against Maria Starikov. Maria proved too good for Nathan, winning 12-10, 11-5, 11-7.

Both doubles went the way of Dunkley Scales, Skiadas and Beard winning in four sets against Starikov and McMahon, and later Skiadas and Clifford much too good for Starikov and Jenny Leach, subbing for the absent Liam Nicolaou.

Whilst Dunkley Scales stay on top of the ladder with an enhanced percentage, Tankard Dental drop from second to fourth.

Final scores: 10 rubbers to 1 and 30 games to 6.

– Weightmans Packaging 8 (Brian White 3, Chelsey Avers 2, Gary Leach 1) d Mallee Meats 3 (Wendy Simpson 2, Keith Sharman 1)

Weightmans Packaging won the last four rubbers to run away with this match.

Captain Brian White, subbing for Glenn Leeson, in his first competitive outing this season, took three wins. Number two, Chelsea Avers picked up two wins, including a very hard fought five setter against Keith Sharman in the tenth rubber, 12-10, 10-12, 12-10, 8-11, 11-9. Gary Leach, the number three got the better of his opposite number Curtis Crabtree in straight sets.

Both doubles rubbers went the way of Weightmans Packaging, White and Avers winning 7, 6 and 5 against Wendy Simpson and Keith Sharman, and in the second doubles White and Leach had a good four set tussle with Simpson and Crabtree, winning that 11-8, 10-12, 11-4, 13-11.

Weightmans Packaging jump from last on the ladder to second, whilst Mallee Meats remain third.

Final scores: 8 rubbers to 3 and 24 games to 15
