Many excellent singles contests were the feature of round eight matches of Sunraysia Table Tennis as the competition for the top four positions on the ladder hots up with two rounds of home and away matches to play.
Ladder leader Choices Flooring Mildura continued on their winning way as skipper Arhuang Lau again won three singles and took part in both doubles’ victories. With their second win in succession Weightmans Packaging have jumped into second place despite Jackson Tung winning three singles for Mallee Bearings. Tankard Dental now occupy fourth position on the ladder after defeating third placed Regional Taxation Services 6-5 courtesy of Jamie Kealley winning three singles and Mark Dorman two.
– Choices Flooring Mildura 6 (Arhuang (Wong) Lau 3, Rohan Reimers 1) d Cookes Pools & Spas 5 (Reece Kurrle, Liam Wood 2, Duy Truong 1)

Choices Flooring Mildura can be considered flag favourites after winning their seventh match in succession, this round defeating Cookes Pools & Spas 6-5. The scoreline indicates the match was close however the Choices team actually banked the four points at 6-3 before Cookes improved the score winning the final two singles.
A highlight in this contest was the singles between Arhuang Lau and Cookes Reece Kurrle, while this only went to three sets it contained some outstanding rallies and lengthy games. With both players pounding their forehands and exchanging excellent back hand rallies it was Lau after winning the first game comfortably who was able to keep a slight lead in the second and third games, the final scoreline was amazingly 11-4 20-18 15-13 an outstanding contest.
– Tankard Dental 6 (Jamie Kealley 3, Mark Dorman 2) d Regional Taxation Services 5 (Kate Carmichael 2, Andrew Cannard, Michael Tan 1)

Tankard Dental have improved their finals chances with a narrow 6-5 victory over third placed Regional Taxation Services. Victory came due to the form of Jamie Kealley and Mark Dorman who won three and two singles respectively. They also combined to win the first doubles in four sets over Kate Carmichael and Andrew Cannard.
Kealley was in good form winning three singles for the third time in this pennant, his four-set victory over Kate Carmichael when the match score stood at four rubbers all was crucial. Carmichael was away early winning the first game comfortably before Kealley bounced back to take the second and third. Kealley then took control to lead 5-2 in the fourth before Carmichael lifted to take a 10-6 lead in a big turnaround. Amazingly Kealley then again lifted and rattled off the next six points as both players exchanged some excellent rallies. This 3-11 11-7 11-9 12-10 victory by Kealley could potentially shape Tankard’s season.
With Tankards leading 5-4 number two Mark Dorman then stepped up to the table against the consistent Andrew Cannard. Four sets later and after dropping the first game Dorman had proved too steady and won 8-11 11-9 11-8 12-10. What a valuable four points for Tankard Dental with two rounds to play.
– Weightmans Packaging 7 (Wayne Carmichael, Thanh Nguyen 2, Lee Leeson 1) d Mallee Bearings 4 (Jackson Tung 3, Paul Kealley 1)

Weightmans Packaging proved too steady for Mallee Bearings winning 7-4 in an even team performance. Victory came for Weightman’s despite Bearings captain Jackson Tung winning three singles including an impressive victory in four sets over opposing number one Wayne Carmichael 11-5 11-5 12-14 11-8 a match of high standard.
Despite this singles loss Carmichael did win two singles surviving a lengthy five setter against the hard-hitting Paul Kealley however it was the doubles which proved vital in the battle for the four points and Carmichael played in both doubles’ victories.
Carmichael and teammate Thanh Nguyen recovered from a 0-2 deficit in the first doubles to win in five sets over Tung and Kealley, a great fightback. This was a solid team effort from Weightmans with Nguyen winning two singles and teammate Lee Leeson one.
With two round to play the six teams can all mathematically play finals.

Sammy’s Slammers came close to toppling ladder leaders Tankard Dental in this round, but ultimately lost six rubbers to five; Mallee Meats had the services of fill-ins to overcome Weightmans Packaging; and Dunkley Scales looked done and dusted, but won the last four rubbers to steal their match from Pinnacle Packers.
– Tankard Dental 6 (Josh Arnold, Kym Sykes, Juan Castro 2) d Sammy’s Slammers 5 (Daniel Jansen 3)

Tankard Dental maintained their grip on top spot with another win in this round, this time against Sammy’s Slammers.
A solid team performance saw each of the Tankard Dental players win two of their three singles rubbers – none of them could get the better of Sammy’s Slammers captain Daniel Jansen.
Tankard Dental number three Juan Castro was too solid for Sammy’s Slammers number two Ryan Hensgen when he recorded a four set win. His match-up with his opposite number Yen Hwak was much harder, he did get over the line, but it took him five sets to win 11-8, 7-11, 11-6, 10-12, 11-8.
Number two Kym Sykes won both his matches in four sets. and in both he lost the first set before settling into his rhythm.
Captain Josh Arnold almost made it three wins – he had an easy three set win against Hensgen, he dropped the first set to Sammy’s Slammers number three Yen Hwak and won in four; and he traded sets with Jansen in their clash in the final round of singles. Jansen had to play well to win in five sets, the last 13-11.
Jansen was the only one to win any singles rubbers for Sammy’s Slammers, and with both the doubles going to his team, they were in with a chance of pulling off the win. After the ninth rubber they led five rubbers to four, but then Sykes defeated Hensgen in four sets and Castro downed Hwak in their determining five set contest.
Final scores: Tankard Dental won 6 rubbers to 5 and 23 games to 21.
– Mallee Meats 7 (Jamie Stanley 3, Juan Castro 2, Shiva Rottela 1) d Weightmans Packaging 4 (Sony Sefer, Steve Parker, Andrew Kremor 1)

Mallee Meats were without captain Quentin Clark and number two Deegan Kerslake for this game, and they were fortunate to have the services of Shiva Rottela subbing for Clark, and Sam Campbell and Juan Castro doing double duty whilst subbing for Kerslake.
Weightmans Packaging had their own problems (one actually) – captain Kevin Johns could not play this round, so Sony Sefer stepped into the breach, his second match for the season.
Mallee Meats started well, winning three of the first four rubbers. Castro downed Weightmans Packaging number three Andrew Kremor in straight sets, number two Jamie Stanley played a ding-dong match with Sefer, getting the win with a 16-14, 6-11, 2-11, 11-2, 13-11 scoreline. Then Rottela and Stanley dispatched Sefer and Steve Parker in the first doubles in four sets. While this was going on, Weightmans Packaging’s Steve Parker ground out a five set win over Rottela.
Weightmans Packaging responded in the next four rubbers, this time they won three of them. Sefer had a three set win against Sam Campbell, Andrew Kremor got the better of Rottela over four sets, and Sefer and Kremor won the second doubles against Rottela and Campbell in four close sets 11-9, 13-11, 9-11, 11-9. The rubber for Mallee Meats came courtesy of Jamie Stanley – he proved too good for Parker, winning in five sets.
So after eight rubbers, the score was four rubbers apiece, and from there on it was all Mallee Meats. Rottela recorded his first win for the night with a four set win against Sefer, Juan Castro battled with Steve Parker over five sets, and the player of the night, Jamie Stanley won his third singles rubber by defeating Andrew Kremor in four sets. It was a particularly good night for Stanley as he had earlier won his doubles. Not to many number three’s have a night like that!!
The Weightmans Packaging trio all won just the one singles rubber, and Sefer and Kremor took the second doubles to give their side four rubbers for the night.
Final scores: Mallee Meats won 7 rubbers to 4 and 25 games to 21.
– Dunkley Scales 6 (Rasin Bhuiyan, Andrew Jones 2, Sam Campbell 1) d Pinnacle Packers 5 (Therese Fitzpatrick, James Jarvis 2)

When these two sides met in round three, Pinnacle Packers won six rubbers to five. So when they led four rubbers to one after five rubbers this time, things were looking good. Two matches later the score was
five rubbers to two – four rubbers to go, one needed for the win. But it did not quite work out …
Dunkley Scales were nowhere for the first seven rubbers. As stated, at that point they trailed Pinnacle Packers two rubbers to five. Andrew Jones (subbing for Chris Cen) had defeated Pinnacle Packers number three Koby Grace in four sets. Jones had the better of Grace, winning his sets to 7, 5 and 7, whilst Grace had to work hard to win his only set 12-10. Dunkley Scales captain Rasin Bhuiyan won the second of those two when he defeated Grace in straight sets in the second round of singles.
All the while Pinnacle Packers kept the scoreboard ticking -captain Therese Fitzpatrick a predictable three set win against Campbell; James Jarvis a fighting five set win over opposing captain Bhuiyan; Fitzpatrick and Jarvis combined to win the first doubles in three sets in an odd looking score 11-4, 13-11, 11-2. Not sure what was going on with Bhuiyan and Jones in that one … Therese then came from two sets to love down to defeat Jones and Jarvis recorded a three set win against Campbell.
On the strength of what had gone before, it would be easy to expect Pinnacle Packers would win, and probably picked a couple of the last four rubbers. But no …
Fitzpatrick and Grace were not good enough in the second doubles – Bhuiyan and Campbell proved stronger over five sets, winning 9-11, 11-9, 11-6, 9-11, 11-7. Next up the two captains played, and Rasin knew he needed to win to keep his side in the contest. He lost the first two sets to Fitzpatrick 10-12, 10-12, and then found top gear. He blitzed Therese 11-5, 11-5, 11-3 in the final three sets. Then Andrew Jones lulled James Jarvis into a false sense of security by “letting” him win the first two sets 11-4, 11-6. Try and he might, James could not secure the third set for the win as Andrew strung the match out, taking the last three sets 11-8, 11-8, 12-10. Then in the decider, Sam Campbell (who had doubled up remember, filling in in the Mallee Meats/Weightmans Packaging match), answered all that Koby Grace could put up, winning in straight sets 11-8, 11-9, 12-10.
A great come-from-behind win to Dunkley Scales.
Final scores: Dunkley Scales won 6 rubbers to 5 and 22 games each.

PENNANT THREE:
Usually it’s Winter Pennant which see’s numerous players dropping out due to illness, but it seems we have a lot of nasty germs about at the moment, which is knocking people down like fly’s. So take care everyone, wash your hand regularly and sanitize when possible.
With five away in this weeks Pennant 3 and three of them in one team, it made for a very interesting night. The first two teams up included the invisible Exposed Signage, so this would be a whole new ball games.
Come the end of this round, it would only leave two weeks, before the Finals.
With the Spring Carnival well and truly upon us, it may have left it’s mark on the write up.

– Exposed Signage/Apparel 6 (Michael Hensgen 3, Jenny Leach, Tom Gilmour 1) d Mallee Bearings 5 (Jakob Grzan 2, Hayden Wilson, Costa Skiadis 1)

Exposed : Nick Kiapekos (Fill-in, Michael Hensgen), Leanne Wilson (F-I, Tom Gilmour) and Nathan Beard (F-I, Jen Leach). Mallee : Hayden Wilson, Jakob Grzan and Costa Skiadis.
The elusive Exposed flew out of the barriers in lightening speed picking up the first three Rubbers. Tom left Hayden a bit shell shocked, marking up the first and the light weight, Jakob put the pressure on Michael, with the score line (14/12, 11/6, 13/11) before Michael saw a gap to burst through. A lengthy five set wrangle, saw some wiley moves from Jen and Costa, before Exposed number three fill-in settled back in the Saddle to take the win.
Mallee’s Hayden and Jakob had a clear view of the finish line in the Doubles, capturing their first Rubber in a four set scuffle, over Michael and Tom.
Michael took it up to Hayden in the next Singles match, with Exposed pinching back that lost Rubber after a four set doozey. Hayden, gave it his all, doing his darndest to stay in his lane, but Michael’s experience was too much.
With Exposed now 4 to Mallee’s 1, there would have to be a very strong tail wind to pick up the speed.
Blow me down, Mallee did pull themselves together and thundered home in the following two Rubbers, which should have given them the confidence to go all the way.
Costa and Tom went blow for blow, with Costa’s ability to return most every shot, he got a head start, before Tom unleashed his tricky serves allowing him to take the next. Costa stood tall in his saddle, to kept the pressure on and pinch the next two games and the Rubber.
A hard fought five setter between Jen and Jakob was a see sawing affair, which had both level pegging throughout, including a (13/11) going to Jakob in the third game. Mallee’s number two, made the most of the age difference and brought home his Teams third Rubber, with an even tussle though the whole match.
The last Doubles was pulled in very quickly by the combination of Michael and Jen, when they faced up to Hayden and Costa. It was a surprising outcome with an inexperienced filly amongst the pairing. The Match now stood with a definite advantage to Exposed, only needing one more Rubber to trot away winners, in their invisible team effort.
When Michael and Costa were called to the Table, with the past form Michael was presenting on the night, it would have been thought this was going to end quickly. But Costa had a fought hard in the third game, finding an opening to force it to four sets. Michael took a breath and bang, he accelerated straight past Costa only allowing him one point in the last game, to make sure of the nights win and stamp home his third Singles win.
The last two matches saw Mallee’s Captain seal his first win, with an (11/8, 11/8, 11/8) against Jen, who tried to take the bend three wide. Jakob land a walk over from Tom, when he headed to the Stables earlier than expected, being scratched from the last.
WINNER : Exposed Signage / Apparel 6 to Mallee Bearings 5.
GAMES : Exposed 22 to Mallee 19.
– Dunkley Scales 8 (Karly Leach, Rodney Galvin, Jeff Forsyth 2) d Regional Taxation Services 3 (Peter Fitzpatrick 3)

Dunkley : Karly Leach, Rod Galvin and Jeff Forsyth. Regional : Peter Fitzpatrick, Maria Starikov and Conner Burnett (F-I, Costa Skiadis).
With Dunkley sitting on top of the Ladder after Round 7, it was likely they were going into this one as favorites.
This Match was a two steps forward, one step back encounter, but in the end gave one Team a solid win, which inevitably was helped over the line by a couple of scratchings.
Dunkley took the early lead with both Jeff and Karly penciling in the first two Rubbers. Maria forced Jeff out to (13/11) in the middle game of their three sets when she tried to squeeze through a very narrow gap. Karly was still thinking of that bail of Hay in the Stables, when Costa got her baffled for a good part of their first game (14/12), before Dunkley’s Captain entered all of the data and wound things up in three.
Peter has a slow and calculated method to winning the race, which generally brings home the Rubber and this was exactly how he put an end to his match against Rod after four sets.
Peter and Maria set the pace in the first game, breaking away, limiting Karly and Rod to a single point. But the whips certainly came out in the next three games, with the score line (13/11,12/10, 13/11) in a very tight come back from Dunkley.
Maria was sitting on the inside rail holding her own with Dunkley’s number one, before Karly loosened the reins and shot home in three sets.
Jeff got stuck in the Barriers in the first game, although he did find his second wind in the last game of his three setter with Regional’s Captain, before Peter galloped his way to the winning post.
The rallies were as lengthy as the Melbourne Cup in the dash for the winner of the final Doubles, with the first and last of the five setter going out to 13, in favor of Karly and Jeff. Peter and Costa put together a decent fight, but it was a heavy track, which didn’t help their cause. This saw Dunkley pass the post for the over all victory.
Karly came across too many hurdles in her race against Peter. Patience is a virtue in any race, which rang true on occasion, handing Peter his 3rd Singles win.
The final match played for the night was between Rod and Maria, with Dunkley’s number two a furlong in front in the first game, Maria made up some ground, before she dropped the whip, allowing Rod to maneuver his way to a win.
Costa was a late scratching, giving Rod and Jeff free reins to two Rubbers for Dunkley.
WINNER : Dunkley Scales 8 to Regional Taxation Services 3.
GAMES : Dunkley 25 to Regional 12.
– Cookes Pools & Spas 7 (Sabrina Fitzpatrick, Glenn Leeson, Joel Bottams 2) d Mallee Meats 4 (Anthony Fox 3)

Cookes : Sabrina Fitzpatrick, Glenn Leeson & Joel Bottams. Mallee : Anthony Fox, Tom Gilmour and Jake Hines (F-I, Jen Leach).
With the past form of Cookes sitting at 5 wins and 1 loss, together with being second on the Ladder, the form guide had them as firm fav’s and this proved evident with them holding a four to one lead after five matches.
Joel has taken the eye of the selectors, with his natural flair for the game and although Tom caught him by surprise in the last of three, he took stock of the game and locked in the first Rubber.
With another players not making it out of the parading ring, Sabrina received a free ride in this match.
Anthony is leading the aggregate at the moment and most are finding it very difficult to maneuver there way past him. Glenn experienced the wind as Foxy tore past him in three sets.
Sabrina and Joel did very well against Anthony and Tom in the Doubles, winning, with the Mallee pair struggling to make any ground.
This match was the only five set match of this encounter, with the first two games totally in the control of Sabrina, before Tom came to life taking the third game with (14/12) followed by the fourth. But Cookes number two didn’t allow Tom any room to pass in the last, with this being four Rubbers to her Team.
Glenn was the lucky one this time, with his opposition player visiting another Stable.
Glenn and Joel were up for the challenge when they spotted Anthony and Jen in the Barriers. The first three games were relatively even, but both Foxy and Jen pulled out a miraculous fourth game to fly past the winning post, adding a third Rubber to Mallee’s list.
It was the two number one’s up against each other now, with Sabrina hoping to bring home the Rubber needed to finish the night. But Anthony was on the hunt for his third Singles and the Track was good to him.
Glenn popped on his Silks and galloped home in his skirmish against Tom, pocketing that Rubber needed for glory.
Jen did her best to pull in a win against Joel, but the young colt had her measure right from the start, with his rapid fire shots.
WINNER : Cookes Pool’s & Spa’s 7 to Mallee Meats 4.
