ROUND 4

2024/10/Scoresheets-Summer-2024-R4.pdf

PENNANT ONE:

There was a sombre mood leading into the fourth round of the Sunraysia Table Tennis pennant one competition after the school holiday break. The players gathered for a minute’s silence and reflected on the passing of local sporting identity Michael Hogarth. Whilst more well known for his football and cricketing skills Michael was a very talented table tennis player and a past pennant one premiership player and long-time supporter of the STTA.

– Mallee Bearings 8 (Jackson Tung 3, Liam Wood 2, Tom Morrison 1) d Tankard Dental 3 (Rohan Reimers, Paul Kealley, Jamie Kealley 1)

Once play began Mallee Bearings were the major achievers of the round with their outstanding 8-3 victory over previously second placed Tankard Dental. The very first match of the night set the scene for Mallee Bearings when number three Tom Morrison up from pennant two this season recorded his best win in pennant one with a four-set victory over the talented Paul Kealley.

The Bearings trio of Jackson Tung, Liam Wood and Morrison then raced to victory winning seven of the next eight rubbers. Tung won three singles, Wood two and Morrison one and by winning both doubles they have moved to third on the ladder pushing their opponents from second to fourth.

– Weightmans Packaging 6 (Wayne Carmichael 3, Russell Walder 1) d Choices Flooring Mildura 5 (Reece Kurrle, Jamie Kealley 2, Daniel Jansen 1)

Ladder leader Weightmans Packaging maintained their undefeated record with a narrow 6-5 victory over bottom of the ladder Choices Flooring Mildura who are yet to win a match however they did place their opponents under pressure. The lack of success in the doubles played a big part and the fact that Weightmans Wayne Carmichael again won three singles to remain undefeated over the first four rounds.

For Choices Flooring Mildura both Reece Kurrle and fill in Jamie Kealley won two singles while number three Daniel Jansen won one. In particular Kealley played well defeating Lee Leeson in five sets and the in-form Russell Walder in four sets. Kealley is showing very good form in his first pennant one season.

– Regional Taxation Services 6 (Kate Carmichael 3, Casper McCarthy 2) d Cookes Pools & Spas 5 (Mark Dorman 2, Dylan Wood, Ed Hung 1)

In a further close contest Regional Taxation Services recorded their third victory of the season defeating Cookes Pools & Spas 6-5. For RTS Kate Carmichael was in good form winning three singles while fill in Casper McCarthy offered good support winning two singles. With the score at 5-4 in his teams’ favour McCarthy recorded a very good win defeating Dylan Wood 4-11 12-10 11-9 11-3.

The doubles were shared but the second proved to be a decider when Kate Carmichael and Jason Gifkins matched up against Cookes Mark Dorman and Ed Hung. The RTS pair were able to just hold the ascendancy winning 12-10 11-9 11-9 and in particular Gifkins played well in the victory against a very experienced pair.

He would have gained confidence from his performance in this doubles.

Earlier Gifkins had placed Dylan Wood under extreme pressure before going down in five sets. For Weightmans Mark Dorman continued his solid season winning two singles for the fourth round in succession.

Weightman’s Packaging 7 Josh Arnold (1), Harry Gujral (2), James Jarvis (2) defeated Pinnacle Packers 4 Rasin Bhuiyan (3), Ryan Peterson (1), Peter Fitzpatrick (0)

In our first round back after the school holidays, Weightman’s Packaging took out a hard-fought win over Pinnacle Packers in a night which saw Packers number 2 Peterson defeat opposing captain Arnold in five sets. A lean night for Arnold, only getting one singles win despite winning the night. Peter Fitzpatrick subbed in for daughter Therese on Packer’s side.

In the first game of the night Peterson went down to Gujral in four 7-11, 12-14, 11-9, 7-11. Bhuiyan then levelled the score 1 apiece, beating Jarvis also in four, losing the first 5-11 but then clamping down 11-7, 11-8, 11-7. Up next, fill-in Fitzpatrick couldn’t do much against Arnold, losing 1-11, 2-11, 3-11. On to the first doubles of the night which pitted Bhuiyan and Peterson against Arnold and Gujral with the Packers duo winning the first 11-6, but then Weightmans found their rhythm, winning the second set 11-3, barely winning the third 15-13, and taking the victory in the fourth 11-3.

Weightmans were now halfway home, the score sitting at 3-1 when Packers launched a counterattack. Captain Bhuiyan first took out Gujral, but not without difficulty, succumbing in the first 7-11, winning the second 11-4 then grinding his way to victory 12-10, 12-10. In the upset game of the night, Peterson then took on Arnold to gain the third rubber for his team. He opened strong, taking the first set 11-9, Arnold then retaliating, winning the next two 9-11, 8-11, but then Peterson snatched the victory 11-3 in the fourth and 12-10 in the fifth. An epic five setter and a great effort from Peterson. Packers had now levelled the score again 3-3 when Jarvis faced off against Fitzpatrick, taking the flag after a difficult four set match 13-15, 11-8, 12-10, 11-8. Second doubles match: Bhuiyan and Fitzpatrick versus Arnold and Jarvis. Packers struck the first blow winning the first 11-8, Weightmans regrouped and took the second and third 11-2, 11-7. Packers dug deep and won the fourth 11-6 but it would not be enough, and they lost in the fifth 11-4.

The score now 5-3, Bhuiyan won his third singles over Arnold comfortably 11-5, 11-7, 12-10. Packers really wanted this next rubber, but Gujral proved to strong for Fitzpatrick, winning in four 11-9, 15-13, 9-11, 11-7 and sealing the victory for his team. The last game of the night pitted Peterson against Jarvis, the two tussling in a lengthy five setter with Jarvis narrowly winning 11-7, 12-14, 8-11, 11-7, 12-10.

Final score 7 rubbers to 4 and 25 games to 20.

Cookes Pools and Spas 8 Marcus Cimino (3), David Sergi (2), Nhat Dat (1) defeated Mallee Meats 3 John Fitzpatrick (1), Duy Truong (2), Riley Clemence (0).

Despite the absence of their captain Cookes racked up a decisive win over a shaky Mallee Meats in round 4. Marcus Cimino substituted for skipper Ash Morrison, taking 3 singles wins for his side. With Meat’s No. 2 Mark Cleary also absent, newcomer Duy Truong filled in, getting two singles wins. Meat’s number 3 Riley Clemence played his first round this night, after missing the first three rounds.

In the opening match, Sergi quickly dispatched Clemence in three sets 11-5, 11-5, 11-1. Meat’s captain Fitzpatrick then defeated Dat also in straight sets 11-7, 11-4, 11-6. Truong then went up against opposing No. 1 Cimino and after a valiant effort went down in four 5-11, 9-11, 11-9, 5-11. The score now sat at 2-1 in Cookes’s favour. In the night’s first doubles match Meats looked to even the score, and they started strong with a two-set lead over Cookes 11-9, 11-7, but it was all for nought as Cookes pair Cimino and Sergi clawed their way back to victory 11-9, 11-9, 11-8, dealing a bitter blow to Meats.

Cookes continued to surge ahead in the next two rubbers, with Sergi defeating Fitzpatrick in four sets 11-6, 11-3, 9-11, 11-7 and Cimino sorting Clemence out in three 11-1, 11-6, 11-8. Cookes were then able to regain a bit of ground with Truong downing Dat in straight sets 11-4, 11-2, 11-6, bringing the game score to 5-2.

Cookes then put the final nail in Meats’s coffin with the second doubles which they took swiftly in three sets 11-6, 11-4, 12-10. The two captains then squared off for a lengthy five-setter, Fitzpatrick getting the first 12-10, Cimino clenching the next two 11-5, 11-7, Fitzpatrick taking the fourth 11-7 but Cimino prevailing in the last 11-8. Truong then got his second win of the night, besting Sergi in straight sets 11-8, 12-10, 11-5. Then in the final rubber, Dat scored his first and only singles win over Clemence, who would go home empty handed; 12-10, 11-7, 11-6.

Final score 8 rubbers to 3 and 24 games to 15.

– Weightmans Packaging 6 (Sabrina Fitzpatrick 3, Maria Starikov, Gary Leach 1) d Sammy’s Slammers 5 (Sam Campbell, Deegan Kerslake 2)

TEAM : Weightman’s – # 1 – Sabrina Fitzpatrick (Fill in for Nick Kiapekos), # 2 – Maria Starikov and # 3 – Gary Leach.  Sammy’s – # 1 – Sam Campbell, # 2 – Deegan Kerslake and # 3 – Andrew Jeffries.

Gary took on Deegan in the first match, which was put to bed pretty quickly, with Deegan’s skills being too dominant for Gary (11/5, 11/7, 11/3). Andrew fell to Sabrina in the next which evened the ledger (11/5, 11/5, 11/9). Maria put up a good fight against Sam in the first two sets, but was overtaken in the third (11/9, 14/12, 11/5).

The first Doubles saw Sabrina and Maria facing Sam and Deegan and although some sets were over quickly, the Weightmans pairing pushed the match through to five sets, with the final set, going to 14 and landing the Slammers with the Rubber (6/11, 11/3, 11/8, 6/11, 14/12).

Deegan is usually very dominant in his matches, but Sabrina pull out some excellent shots and got the better of him in this encounter (11/5, 11/8, 11/5). This match only went to three sets, but Gary pushed Sam in each one (11/7, 14/12, 11/9). Andrew forced Maria to an four sets, winning the first, but once again, Maria pulled out her wall of defense to add a Rubber for Weightman’s (9/11, 11/2, 11/1, 13/11).

With the Slammers one up, the last Doubles would be crucial. Sabrina and Gary put together a winning match against Sam and Andrew, which gave Weightman’s the Rubber they were looking for (11/6, 11/2, 11/8).

Sam had a good crack at her match against Sabrina, but it wasn’t enough to pull in another win for her team (11/2, 11/8, 11/8). With Sammy’s needing to win the second last match, to stay in it, Maria gave Deegan a run for his money, with a well fought five setter, which tumbled the way of the Slammers (6/11, 11/3, 11/4, 6/11, 11/1). This left the last match to decide the night, with the two number three’s up. It was a close match, which went out to four, with the winning Rubber going the way of Gary, giving Weightman’s the over all win for the night.

WINNER : Weightman’s Packaging 6 to Sammy’s Slammers 5.

GAMES : 22 to 17

– Exposed Signage/Apparel 6 (Steve Parker, Beh Hwak 2) d Mallee Meats 5 (Karly Leach 3, Jenny Leach, Curtis Crabtree 1)

TEAMS : Exposed – # 1 – Steve Parker, # 2 – Beh Hwak (filling in for Ted Cleary) and # 3 – Connor Burnett. Mallee – # 1 – Karly Leach, # 2 – Curtis Crabtree and # 3 – Jenny Leach.

Curtis had the opening match and was pretty much blown away by Steve in the first two sets, but pressured him to 12 in the third, with the Rubber going to Exposed (11/3, 11/3, 12/10). Jen and Connor took to the Table next and Connor has definitely fine tuned his game recently. The four sets went the way of Jen, but not before a tough contest (11/9, 7/11, 11/9, 11/5). Karly collected the Rubber in this match, when she came up against Beh, who gave it his best shot (11/8, 11/7, 11/7).

It was a real tussle when Steve and Beh came up against Karly and Curtis in the first Doubles, going all the way, with Exposed adding their second Rubber (11/5, 7/11, 11/2, 6/11, 13/11).

Jen had no hope of beating Steve in their match, with his shots out of her reach (11/6, 11/3, 11/2). Karly had a comprehensive win over Connor in the first set, but to his credit, he drove Karly to 12 in their second set, finishing in three, Karly’s way (11/0, 12/10, 11/8). Beh snuck in the first two sets over Curtis in a nail bitter, with Curtis giving it his all and to save the next two. Their final set saw Beh creep home for the win (11/5, 11/9, 6/11, 9/11, 11/8).

Mother and Daughter paired up in the last Doubles against Steve and Connor, with the Ladies taking the first set, but three seven eleven’s in the following sets gave Exposed another Rubber (5/11, 11/7, 11/7, 11/7).

With Mallee only having racked up 3 Rubbers, they needed to win all remaining games. The number 1 and 2 on the aggregate were now to face up and their were some great rallies, with Karly winding it up in three, for another terrific nights play (11/9, 11/8, 12/10).

Curtis had a rerun of his second match, going down to Connor in the first two sets, but he wasn’t ready to let this match go and pulled out some amazing shots to win the next three sets and bring the Rubbers back to even (10/12, 8/11, 11/5, 11/5, 11/5). This left the pressure on Jen to try and get the win for Mallee, over Beh. The clash went for four sets with Beh too solid for Jen (11/6, 11/8, 5/11, 11/5).

WINNER : Exposed Signage 6 to Mallee Meats 5.

GAMES : 21 to 21

– Dunkley Scales 7 (Koby Grace 3, Hayden Wilson, Ildi Healy 1) d Regional Taxation Services 4 (Steve Pongrac, Tom Gilmour 1)

TEAMS : Regional – # 1 – Steve Pongrac, # 2 – Tom Gilmour and # 3 –  Tom Gilmour (filling in for Nathan Beard). Dunkley Scales – # 1 – Koby Grace, # 2 – Hayden Wilson and # 3 – Ildi Healy.

Tom, playing as Nathan took on Hayden in the first match, which turned out to be a see sawing affair. Tom grabbed the first set, then Hayden the next two. With the Rubber ending up with Dunkley (7/11, 11/9, 11/8, 2/11, 11/4). Ildi threw together some lovely shots against Steve, but the speed in his game gave him the advantage (11/6, 11/9, 11/6). Koby didn’t seem to have any trouble knocking over Tom in their contest, with a comprehensive win to Dunkley (11/7, 11/5, 11/3).

It was another five set match when Steve and Tom faced Koby and Hayden in the first Doubles. With numerous rallies being produced and the win falling to Dunkley (10/12, 11/7, 11/8, 7/11, 11/9).

Hayden and Steves second set was a ripper, going out to 16, with Steve collecting the Rubber for Regional (11/3, 16/14, 11/6). The next game was a forfeit, with the point going to Dunkley. Regional were behind 2 to 4 at this stage, with Tom doing his best to pull his team back into contention in his contest with Ildi. It was a was a tight match, with Tom just sneaking in for the win (11/5, 10/12, 9/11, 11/8, 11/8). Jenny Leach came across to play as # 3 for Regional in the second Doubles, with Steve, but it didn’t help the cause, with Koby and Ildi far too dominant, bringing up Dunkley’s 5th Rubber (11/6, 12/10, 11/5).

The next match was a must win for Regional and Koby didn’t hold back, allowing Steve only one set, to give the overall win to Dunkley (11/7, 2/11, 12/10, 11/6). Tom and Hayden started off the night and played out the last match.

Tom got his revenge, with their second five setter falling to his way in an thriller (9/11, 11/9, 9/11, 11/4, 11/8). The final point went to Dunkley, as it was a forfeited match.

WINNER : Dunkley Scales 7 to Regional Taxation Services 4.
