PENNANT ONE:

First placed Mallee Bearings and third team Regional Taxation Services have advanced to the Sunraysia Table Tennis Summer pennant grand final after being successful in last week’s knockout semifinals.

– Mallee Bearings 6 (Wayne Carmichael 3, Reece Kurrle 1) d Max Miller Carpets 3 (Arhuang Lau 2, Liam Wood 1)

With Wayne Carmichael again in excellent form Mallee Bearings despite a slow start proved too strong for Max Miller Carpets winning 6-3. The Carpeters won two of the first three singles in three sets courtesy of Liam Wood and skipper Arhuang Lau however from that point the Bearings trio took control to win five of the next six matches and in doing so booked a berth in this week’s grand final.

Bearings skipper Carmichael was on fire breezing through victories in his three singles including a 15-8 15-12 win over the talented Lau.

Both doubles were controlled by Carmichael when teamed up with Reece Kurrle and Quentin Clark respectively.

Despite going down the Carpeters trio of Lau, Liam Wood and Ed Hung should be satisfied with their season after finishing fourth on the ladder and enjoying some good victories.

– Regional Taxation Services 6 (Jackson Tung 3, Leon Brown 2) d Cookes Pools & Spas 4 (Kate Carmichael 2, Jackson Murphy 1)

In the other semifinal Regional Taxation Services reversed a recent loss to Cookes Pools & Spas by winning 6-4 in a hard-fought match.

Three three set matches took place in this semifinal and they were all won narrowly by RTS indicating how close this contest was.  For the victors Jackson Tung played well to win three singles including a top class three set victory over

Kate Carmichael who earlier in the week had taken out the prestigious Super 8 s singles crown, the first female to do so.

Tung took the first game before Carmichael fought back to level at one all, in the all important third Tung was able to maintain a narrow lead going on to win 15-10 12-15 15-11 to take his team to within one victory from a grand final berth.

In the next match Cookes Jackson Murphy was out of the blocks early and with some outstanding forehands took the first game 15-7 against Leon Brown before Brown steadied and went on to win the following two games and take his team to the grand final.

Brown had offered great support to his captain Tung by winning two singles and together they won the first doubles 15-9 8-15 15-13 over Kate Carmichael and Murphy.

Spectators should expect a close tussle in Wednesday’s grand final as head-to-head results are one each with a 6-5 scoreline each time. Ladder leader Mallee Bearings scored their win in round 6 when Bearings number 2 Reece Kurrle won three singles when he was enjoying a purple patch, could he be the key?

PENNANT TWO:

After the semi-finals of this summer competition, the teams which finished first and third on the ladder will play off in the grand final next week.

– Pinnacle Packers 6 (Daniel Jansen 2, Rasin Bhuiyan, David Sergi 1) d Max Miller Carpets 3 (Jamie Kealley 2, Jordan Cole 1)

Top side Pinnacle Packers defeated fourth placed Max Miller Carpets in the first semi-final of the summer competition.

A tactical error by Max Miller Carpets captain Jamie Kealley may have contributed to his side’s demise too. With three rubbers to play, his side trailed three rubbers to five, and the score sheet was filled out in such a way that the number three player had to play the Pinnacle Packers captain in the very first of the final bracket of rubbers. And although Marita Grace delivered a fantastic effort, the result was fairly predictable, with Daniel Jansen securing the berth for his side by winning that match.

Max Miller Carpets started the contest well by winning the first two rubbers – Jordan Cole a solid win against David Sergi (15-13, 15-9) and then captain Jamie Kealley playing his opposite number Daniel Jansen in a rematch of their Super 8’s final from two nights before. Jamie won the good three setter 15-9, 9-15, 15-9.

Pinnacle Packers hit back, taking the next four rubbers – Rasin Bhuiyan a fairly easy winner over Marita Grace (15-5, 15-10); Jansen and Bhuiyan kept their perfect doubles scoring intact with a 15-11, 15-8 win against Kealley and Cole; Jansen had to play some good table tennis to defeat Cole 16-14, 15-9; and David Sergi defeated his opposite number Grace in straight sets 15-4, 15-10.

Jamie Kealley put an end to the run of matches with a hard fought three set win over Bhuiyan 15-7, 10-15, 15-10 to bring the score to four rubbers to three.

Doubles has not been a particularly strong point for Max Miller Carpets this season, as they won just nine of the twenty rubbers over the ten rounds. Pinnacle Packers on the other hand won thirteen of their twenty doubles rubbers. And the numbers stayed with Pinnacle Packers in this most important match, Jansen and Sergi combining well to down Kealley and Grace 15-13, 15-11.

With the lead stretched to five rubbers to three, and the following match featuring Jansen and Grace, Max Miller Carpets were probably resigned to their fate, and so it proved.

Final scores: 6 rubbers to 3 and 14 games to 6.

– Weightmans Packaging 6 (Jeremy Corrin 3, Shaun Gifford 2) d Mallee Meats 3 (Terry Martin, Tom Morrison 1)

This match featured the teams which finished second (Mallee Meats) and third (Weightmans Packaging) on the ladder. Weightmans Packaging had had a strong season – the side had occupied either the top spot or second on the ladder for eight of the ten rounds, and they had second “pinched” from them by their opponents here in the final round.

The Weightmans Packaging pair of captain Jeremy Corrin, and his number two Shaun Gifford were men on a mission in this match. They each won all their singles rubbers (Corrin won three, Gifford two), and together won the second doubles, an important game in the context of the match as the win gave them a lead of five rubbers to three, and a loss would have kept Mallee Meats well and truly in the match at four rubbers all.

But back to the start …

Gifford started confidently against James Jarvis in rubber number one. The first set was an easy 15-6 win, but Jarvis improved significantly in the second set, but Gifford had his measure and kept the game to two sets, taking the second 16-14.

Mallee Meats equalled the score – captain Terry Martin was relieved to win in three sets against the big hitting Therese Fitzpatrick 16-14, 12-15, 15-6.

The next match was a danger match for Weightmans Packaging. Jeremy Corrin facedTom Morrison. Morrison has been playing more like a number one than a number two in the second half of this season, and a win in this rubber would have been a blow to Weightmans Packaging. Those who saw the match witnessed some great table tennis of the highest quality. There was no let up in the standard from start to finish with Corrin eventually getting over the line 15-13, 13-15, 15-11.

Once again Mallee Meats equalled the score, this time in the first doubles. Martin and Morrison showed why they had won seven of the nine times

they played together during the season with another strong display against Corrin and Fitzpatrick, a pair who were not too shabby either, having won six of their nine matches. The Weightmans Packaging pair looked to have the edge after they took the first set 15-6, but Martin and Morrison shook that off and took the next two sets 15-10, 15-11.

Gifford and Corrin then took the next two rubbers – Gifford was not intimidated by Mallee Meats captain Martin and stuck to his game plan taking the win 21-19, 15-12. Corrin then faced Jarvis, and actually had more trouble defeating him than Gifford did in the first rubber. Jarvis took the first set from Corrin 15-10, but that seemed to jolt Jeremy into action as he responded 15-8 in the second and kept Jarvis at arm’s length in the third to take that 15-12.

Morrison got his first singles win for the night, a big hitting match against Therese Fitzpatrick. Neither player held back, and Tom landed more balls than Therese to take the win 15-13, 16-14 in a very entertaining clash.

Next up was the second doubles, Corrin and Gifford against Morrison and Jarvis. Morrison and Jarvis started better, taking the first set 15-11, and had a chance or two to take the match in straight sets, but Corrin and Gifford snuck home 16-14 in the second to take the match to the decider. The Weightmans Packaging pair kept their roll going from the second set and ran out 15-11 winners in the third.

The score was now five rubbers to three, with Weightmans Packaging needing just one more to get themselves into the grand final.

Corrin faced his opposing captain Martin, and with his confidence sky high there was no stopping Corrin here, he made short work of his opponent to take the rubber, and the match, 15-10, 15-6.

Final scores: 6 rubbers to 3 and 14 games to 9

– Pinnacle Packers vs Weightmans Packaging in Grand final on Wednesday

PENNANT THREE:

The sides which finished first and second on the ladder after ten rounds will play in this year’s summer grand final.

– Weightmans Packaging 6 (Karly Leach 2, Glenn Leeson, Dianne Hannig 1) d Sammy’s Slammers 2 (Nick Kiapekos, Leo Parker 1)

Weightmans Packaging won this match in decisive style, six rubbers to two.

Having been near the top of the ladder for most of the competition, Sammy’s Slammers had a late season collapse falling to fourth after the tenth round, and then bundled out here.

Led by their captain Karly Leach, Weightmans Packaging made this win look fairly simple. Win they did, but Sammy’s Slammers captain Nick Kiapekos, in particular, made them work for it.

First blood in the match went to Sammy Slammers, Leo Parker (subbing for Ryan Peterson) blasting his way past Dianne Hannig 15-8, 15-4. Newly crowned Super 8’s champion Karly Leach evened the books with a regulation 15-4, 15-12 win against Sammy’s Slammers number three Deegan Kerslake.

Sammy’s Slammers poked their noses in front again in the next rubber – Kiapekos never saying die, and outlasting Glenn Leeson. Leeson won the first set with a marathon 22-20 scoreline, Kiapekos kept the second set a bit shorter, but was still a close 15-12 win to him. Those two sets took a toll on Leeson, and Kiapekos won the third set easily 15-4.

Unfortunately for Sammy’s Slammers that was to be the end of their winning for the night.

Leach and Leeson proved too strong in the first doubles rubber against the two Sammy’s Slammers players who had just won singles rubbers, Kiapekos and Parker. The Weightmans Packaging pair played a careful first set, then took control in the second to win 15-13, 15-10.

Karly Leach followed up the doubles win with another win against Parker in the next game. There was little between the players in this match, and who knows how the result might have looked had Leo won the second set. As it was, Karly won 15-13, 21-19.

After her earlier loss to Parker, Dianne Hannig was ready for her next match against Nick Kiapekos and was determined to make a better fist of

this game. Kiapekos won the first set 16-14, however Hannig was not unduly perturbed as she took the next two sets 15-8, 15-10 in confident fashion.

Just as Dianne Hannig had lost her first round singles match, so had Glenn Leeson. Leeson made no mistake this time round, besting Deegan Kerslake 15-9, 15-7.

That made the score five rubbers to two, with four to play. Weightmans Packaging needed just one of those four.

Leach and Hannig needed just the first of the four to wrap up the match – they had too much experience for the younger pairing of Parker and Deegan, who, to their credit, fought hard, but were simply outplayed 15-8, 15-10.

Weightmans Packaging will go into next week’s grand final firm favourites. They have a settled side in Leach, Leeson and Hannig, and have been playing well.

Final scores: 6 rubbers to 2 and 13 games to 5.

– Exposed Signage/Apparel 6 (Nhat Dat 2, Steve Parker, Wendy Simpson 1) d Mallee Meats 3 (Riley Clemence 2, Koby Grace 1)

Exposed Signage & Apparel spent the season towards the top of the ladder; Mallee Meats on the other hand were bottom of the ladder for most of the second half of the season. Exposed Signage & Apparel, even without the services of their captain Sabrina Fitzpatrick, were favorites.

Nhat Dat subbed for the absent Fitzpatrick, and except for a surprise defeat to Mallee Meats number three Koby Grace, steered his adopted side to victory.

The match started with Wendy Simpson showing the benefits of much practice when she easily accounted for Dave Tanner 15-7, 15-3. Next up was the win by Koby Grace over Nhat Dat. At this stage of their careers, Dat is certainly the better player, having won 19 singles rubbers this season to Koby’s 9. And the last time they played, only last round, Nhat won in straight sets. So it was a surprise to see Koby turn the tables and trounce Nhat 15-5, 15-11. The win gave Koby confidence for his later matches.

Mallee Meats took a two rubbers to one lead after the next game, in which Mallee Meats captain Riley Clemence needed all his enthusiasm, and then some, to get the better of Steve Parker. Although Steve won more points (40 to 37), Riley won them at the right time, and took the win 15-13, 7-15, 15-12.

Dat and Parker recovered from their singles losses to square the match after the first doubles. They had little trouble really downing Clemence and Tanner 15-12, 15-7.

Dat kept the ball rolling making short work of Tanner in the next singles 15-7, 15-5; Clemence grabbed a win for Mallee Meats defeating Simpson 15-5, 15-8.

Steve Parker then took on the “full of confidence” Koby Grace who really made him work for his 9-15, 15-12, 15-12 win.

The next rubber, the second doubles was make or break for Mallee Meats – either be trailing three rubbers to five or have the match at four rubbers all.

Riley Clemence and Koby Grace gave it all for Mallee Meats, but Nhat Dat and Wendy Simpson got the bounce of the ball in the third set to complete a 13-15, 15-9, 17-15 victory.

One rubber needed for Exposed Signage & Apparel, with three to play.

The two captains faced off, and it was a high quality match played by the two players, Nhat Dat for Exposed Signage & Apparel and Riley Clemence for Mallee Meats. Dat took the first set 15-10, Clemence responded in similar fashion 15-11 in the second, and the third set was a case of who would blink first. Dat got the break he needed and held on to win the third set 15-13 and deny Mallee Meats any further opportunity to extend the match.

Exposed Signage & Apparel proceed to the grand final then. They will have to play well to topple Weightmans Packaging who have improved in the second half of the season. In round one Exposed Signage & Apparel thrashed them ten rubbers to one, but in round six Weightmans Packaging turned the tables, winning eight rubbers to three.

Final scores: 6 rubbers to 3 and 13 games to 9.

PENNANT FOUR:

As predicted Dunkley Scales and Tankard Dental were successful in the Semi Finals and will progress to the Final next Week. It’s been an enjoyable Season, with the above mentioned teams playing consistently and very dominant overall.

– Dunkley Scales 9 (Katrina Clifford, Brandt Dolic 3, Oliver Bremner 1) d Mallee Meats 2 (Maria Starikov, Selma Mayne 1)

The top team, Dunkley Scales, being lead by Katrina Clifford, who was fresh off winning the Pennant four Super 8’s, was up against the 4^th, or bottom team, which was always going to be a hard task for Mallee Meats.

First up in the Singles saw a very intense three sets between Dunkley’s Oliver Brenmer and Jen Leach, with Oliver taking the Rubber (15/9, 15/17, 15/13). Katrina put another point on the board for her team after making it a very quick game against Selma Mayne (15/1, 15/9). Maria Starikov put together a good effort, but Brant Dolic has been so focused and calm through the season, which has helped him bring home a heap of points for Dunkley and this was another to add to his list ((15/11, 15/10).

The first Doubles gave Kat and Brant a little scare, but not for long mind you. Maria and Jen gave it their best shot, but still were unable to land a Rubber for Mallee Meats (15/10, 14/16, 15/9).

Jen was send packing pretty quickly, when she came up against the Pennant 4 aggregate winner, Kat (15/4, 15/9). With Dunkley now holding 5 Rubbers,

Maria was finally able to mark up Mallee’s first point. I think Selma knew the outcome before the game started, when she stood up against Brant. Sel played some nice shots, but Brant was far too strong (15/6, 15/4). This game gave the match winning rubber to Dunkley, giving them a certain entry into the Finals.

In the last Doubles, Kat and Oliver made a good combination, against Maria and Selma, collecting another win (15/12, 15/6). Although not needing to be played out, the last set of Singles saw two more wins to Dunkley finishing with a three sets win to Mallee.

Kat defeated Maria in a well fought two sets (15/11, 15/12). Jen lost to Brant in two (15/3, 15/7) and Selma had a great match against Oliver, with countless rallies (15/13, 13/15, 15/13).     

Winners : Dunkley Scales 9 to Mallee Meats 2 (games 19 to 6).

– Tankard Dental 6 (Nathan Beard 2, Curtis Crabtree, Derek Hung 1) d Weightmans Packaging 2 (Tom Gilmour 2)

Tankard Dental who were sitting second on the Ladder then came up against Weightman’s Packaging, which turned out to be a one way street.

Tankard’s Nathan Beard is a very difficult player to crack, so Cetty was going to be lucky to get the win, with Nathan putting the first point on the board (15/7, 15/6). Weightman’s Tom Gilmour was able to come away on top, against Derek Hung (15/11, 17/15). Curtis Crabtree has been a strong part of Tankards team all season and, although Gary Leach played a very fine game, Curtis got him in the finish (15/12, 15/12).

Derek and Curtis were pushed in the first Doubles, but left the table with another Rubber, after a two sets win against Tom and Gary (15/10, 15/11).  

Derek was getting quite nervous when Cetty stole a set from him, but he held his nerve and added a fourth win for Tankard (15/8, 13/15, 15/9). Gary and Nathan had rally after rally, with Nathan putting the final stamp on the game to take another win (16/14, 15/13). Weightmans captain, Tom, through in a second win, to halt the run of Curtis (19/17, 15/11).

The last Doubles saw Tankard seal the deal, with Derek and Nathan winning the tight battle against Tom and Gary (19/17, 9/15, 15/8), leaving them to join Dunkley in the Finals, which should be an exciting watch.

Winners : Tankard Dental 6 to Weightman’s Packaging 2 (games 12 to 6).
