– Mallee Bearings 8 (Wayne Carmichael, Reece Kurrle 3) d Cookes Pools & Spas 3 (Kate Carmichael, Liam Wood, Lee Leeson 1)

In round seven matches ladder leader Cookes Pools & Spas slipped to second when soundly defeated by Mallee Bearings who now occupy first place on the ladder by one win from Cookes. Bearings skipper Wayne Carmichael after suffering his first singles loss for the season last round this week bounced back strongly to win three singles however it was teammate Reece Kurrle who again starred winning three singles for the second week in succession. His victory over Kate Carmichael was commendable given his slow start, Kurrle winning 5-15 15-12 18-16 a thriller.

If Kurrle can maintain this form Mallee Bearings will be difficult too handle. The score line of 8-3 looked to be one sided however there were five three set matches with four going the way of Mallee Bearings.

– Max Miller Carpets 6 (Arhuang Lau 3, Liam Wood 2, Shane Carmichael 1) d Regional Taxation Services 5 (Jackson Tung 2, Leon Brown 1)

Max Miller Carpets after trailing 2-4 and later 3-5 stormed home to defeat Regional Taxation Services 6-5 in a thriller. At five all fill in Shane Carmichael for the Carpeters snatched victory from the jaws of defeat when he recovered from a 10-14 deficit in the third against Sony Sefer to win 15-10 9-15 17-15. This was an excellent team effort with Arhuang Lau, Liam Wood and Carmichael winning three, two and one singles respectively.

After being defeated soundly 0-11 in round one of this competition the Carpeters have recovered to win four of their next six matches and now occupy third position on the ladder. Lau and Wood are in excellent form and the team is building at the right time.

– Weightmans Packaging 8 (Mark Dorman 3, Gavin Carmichael 2, Russell Walder 1) d Tankard Dental 3 (Thahn Nguyen 2. Paul Kealley 1)

Weightmans Packaging recorded a much-needed win when they defeated Tankard Dental 8-3. Mark Dorman was in fine form for Weightmans winning three singles while teammates Gavin Carmichael and Russell Walder won two and one singles respectively. There were six three set matches played with Weightmans winning five.

Dorman won two important three setters firstly outlasting Rohan Reimers, in the third Dorman trailed 8-10 as Reimers looked to pounce however the experienced Dorman then won the next seven points to win 14-16 15-11 15-10 in an entertaining match. Later Dorman recovered after losing the first game against Thanh Nguyen before again lifting his game to win 13-15 15-9 15-12 a game of great concentration from both players. Dorman was the key in his team gaining the four points.

PENNANT TWO:

Ladder leaders Pinnacle Packers eased to a six rubbers to five win against fourth placed Mallee Meats; second placed Weightmans Packaging inflicted a nine rubbers to two defeat against the luckless Mallee Bearings; and Kevin Johns’ Cookes Pools & Spas grafted to an eight rubbers to three win over third placed Max Miller Carpets.

– Pinnacle Packers 6 (Daniel Jansen 3, Rasin Bhuiyan 1) d Mallee Meats 5 (Andrew Jones, Tom Morrison 2, Tom Cottrell 1)

Ladder leaders Pinnacle Packers have played without their number three Levi Williams for the last four rounds, and it is now confirmed the side will be without him for the rest of the season, so the team will have to rely on fill-ins for success. The last two rounds have seen the side record wins of six rubbers to five.

And so it was confirmed that the performance of the remaining team members will be crucial for here on in. Captain Daniel Jansen continued his exceptional form for this season with another clean sweep of singles matches. Jansen has played in six of the seven rounds played, and dropped just one match … in round one. His singles wins here all came in straight sets, and the Mallee Meats pair of Andrew Jones (subbing for Terry Martin) and Tom Morrison the only reason he did not make it a straight sets win in all his matches. The first doubles went to three sets, Jansen and Rasin Bhuiyan downing Jones and Morrison 15-6, 6-15, 15-11. Jansen and Samar Warring (subbing for Levi Williams this round) won the second doubles 16-14, 15-10 against Morrison and Tom Cottrell (subbing for Leon Bailey).

That gave Pinnacle Packers five rubbers, and the number two Rasin Bhuiyan ensured victory by picking up one singles win, this against Cottrell 15-5, 15-10.

Although the match was decided after rubber number nine, Mallee Meats were far from disgraced. The side won five of the nine singles rubbers, fill-in captain Andrew Jones and regular number two Tom Morrison both winning two, and Tom Cottrell one. Losses in both doubles therefore spoiled any chance of a win.

Final scores: 6 rubbers to 5 and 13 games to 11.

– Weightmans Packaging 9 (Jeremy Corrin 3, Shaun Gifford, Therese Fitzpatrick 2) d Mallee Bearings 2 (John Fitzpatrick 2)

Weightmans Packaging jumped from fourth to second with this big win against Mallee Bearings.

Mallee Bearings have had a miserable season, and Weightmans Packaging added another chapter to that this round.

Mallee Bearings captain John Fitzpatrick was the only member of his team who could prevent a whitewash 11-0 scoreline. John won two singles, 15-6, 15-13 against the impressive Shaun Gifford, and 17-15, 15-9 against his sister Therese.

Of the remaining nine rubbers, six of them went to three sets, so Mallee Bearings were certainly competitive, but they could not break through for a win in any of them.

Weightmans Packaging captain Jeremy Corrin was relatively untroubled for his three singles wins, except for his first match against James Jarvis. Jarvis clearly was not ready in the first set, going down 1-15, but then took the second from Jeremy 17-15. Normal order was restored in the third, Corrin taking control and winning 15-7.

Number two Shaun Gifford took a careful 15-13, 15-13 win over James Jarvis and in the final round of singles, Josh Arnold almost got the better of him, but Shaun prevailed 16-14, 11-15, 15-11.

And number three Therese Fitzpatrick upset the Mallee Bearings number two Josh Arnold in the first rubber of the night, winning 11-15, 15-13, 15-13, and in the final rubber, another three set win, this time against James Jarvis 15-13, 11-15, 15-10.

The first doubles rubber went the way of Corrin and Therese Fitzpatrick. These two are proving to be a handy doubles combination, and currently sit second on the doubles aggregate with five wins from the six times they have played together. They fought off John Fitzpatrick and James Jarvis 13-15, 15-11, 15-8. Clearly captain Jeremy Corrin feels confident with Therese, as he promoted his number three to the first doubles, leaving himself and Shaun Gifford to play the second (their record together is three wins from seven played). On this occasion, they notched up another win, a three set victory against John Fitzpatrick and Josh Arnold 15-5, 1-15, 15-12.

Final scores: 9 rubbers to 2 and 18 games to 10.

– Cookes Pools & Spas 8 (Kevin Johns, David Sergi, Marita Grace 2) d Max Miller Carpets 3 (Jamie Kealley 3)

In a match where Cookes Pools & Spas put the pressure on their opponents, and then kept it there, Kevin Johns and his side were rewarded with a comfortable eight rubbers to three victory.

Johns, David Sergi (subbing for Luca Capizzoto) and Marita Grace all won two singles rubbers – none of them able to get the better of Max Miller Carpets captain Jamie Kealley, Sergi getting the closest with Kealley winning that match 15-10, 13-15, 15-10.

Whilst Cookes Pools & Spas kept the pressure on, Max Miller Carpets for their part frittered away their chances of winning. Both doubles were winnable for Jamie Kealley’s side, but their attention to the job at hand was what made the difference in the scoreline. Johns and Sergi won the first doubles against Kealley and Marcus Cimino (subbing for Jordan Cole) 15-10, 13-15, 17-15, and the second was not much different, Johns and Grace in another three set win against Kealley and Peter Fitzpatrick 6-15, 15-7, 15-13.

Whilst Kevin Johns is probably disappointed at not winning three singles rubbers (fair enough), he should be very happy with the performance of his teammates. Supersub David Sergi (he has played in six of the seven rounds so far as a substitute!!), garnered two important rubbers here, straight sets against Fitzpatrick and a fighting 15-10, 13-15, 17-15 win against Marcus Cimino, and Marita Grace continues to improve and impress, in this match accounting for Cimino 15-10, 16-14 and Fitzpatrick 15-9, 15-13.

– Sammy’s Slammers 5 (Ryan Peterson, Steve Parker 2) d Mallee Meats 4 (Riley Clemence 3, Koby Grace 1)

Hard working committee member Gavin Carmichael was lucky to get these two teams to the table in this round. Mallee Meats had one player missing, Dave Tanner, and Sammy’s Slammers two, captain Nick Kiapekos and number three Deegan Kerslake. With a dearth of suitable fill-ins, this match had to proceed with just two players per side.

The Sammy’s Slammers pair of Ryan Peterson and Steve Parker (subbing for Deegan Kerslake) proved the better pair over the shortened round.

Peterson and Parker both defeated Koby Grace in their singles rubbers, and together they won the only doubles rubber; against Grace and his captain Riley Clemence they proved too strong winning 15-2, 12-15, 15-8.

Mallee Meats captain Clemence was certainly the best player all round, as he won his two singles rubbers – 15-13, 11-15, 15-7 against Parker and 15-8, 12-15, 15-13 against Peterson, but was just unable to weave his magic with Grace in that doubles rubber, thus giving the win to Peterson and Parker.

Final scores: 5 rubbers to 4 and 12 games to 9.

– Weightmans Packaging 8 (Dianne Hannig 3, Steve Pongrac 2, Glenn Leeson 1) d Regional Taxation Services 3 (Nhat Dat 2, Leo Parker 1)

Another match hit with players absent, this time Weightmans Packaging had two missing, captain Karly Leach and number three Chelsey Avers who unfortunately has had to drop out for the rest of the season. Leach had Steve Pongrac subbing for her, and Dianne Hannig stepped in for Avers.

Pongrac and Hannig, together with regular number two Glenn Leeson cruised to an easy eight rubbers to three win against fourth-placed Regional Taxation Services.

Hannig had a great night. She won all her singles and the second doubles too. Her first match against Regional Taxation Services captain Leo

Parker was a beauty. Parker started confidently with a first set win 15-10, but Hannig put her head down and reduced her mistakes to eke out the second set 15-13, and again held off her younger opponent 15-13 in the third to give her side a two rubbers to love lead at that stage. She followed up that win with an easy 15-8, 15-5 defeat of former aggregate leader Nhat Dat in the second round of singles before defeating Brian White 9 and 13 in the final rubber of the contest. With her captain Pongrac, Hannig defeated White and Parker 15-13, 15-9 in the second doubles rubber, a win which clinched the match.

Pongrac won two singles; against Brian White 15-11, 15-9 and opposing captain Leo Parker 15-7, 15-13. Leeson picked up one win, a two set win against White in the first rubber.

Weightmans Packaging added a little more icing to their cake with the second doubles rubber victory by Pongrac and Leeson. They downed Parker and Dat 15-11, 12-15, 15-11 in the closest game of the match.

For Regional Taxation Services, aggregate leader Dat, although downed by Hannig still won two singles and fell (on percentage) to second on the aggregate to Riley Clemence. Leo Parker continued his patchy season with a single win here. So far this season Leo has scored three wins twice, two wins once, one win twice and zero wins on one occasion – a bit of a smorgasboard. That said, his loss to Hannig was no disgrace, Hannig winning 10-15, 15-13, 15-13, he did take hard fought win over Glenn Leeson 15-13, 10-15, 15-9 but fell cheaply to Pongrac 7-15, 13-15. Consistency will come.

The seventh round pushed the two top teams even further ahead, with both picking up another win.

– Dunkley Scales 6 (Katrina Clifford 3, Brandt Dolic 2) d Weightmans Packaging 5 (Tom Gilmour 2, Gary Leach, Cetty Bonaccorso 1)

Dunkley’s number one player Katrina Clifford started their team off on the right foot, marking up a win over Gary Leach in two (15/7, 15/8). From then, the tides changed, with Weightman’s grabbing the next four matches. Firstly Cetty Bonaccorso, put in a full nights effort, playing for her own team, but also for Mallee Meats, as a fill in. Cetty was rewarded with a two sets win over Oliver Bremner (15/12, 15/6). Followed by Tom Gilmour’s three setter Win against Brant Dolic (15/8, 9/15, 15/12).

The combination of Kat and Oliver, in the Doubles, wasn’t quite enough to get them over the line, with Tom and Gary Winning in two sets (15/10, 15/11).

Gary and Oliver had a terrific battle, with the score falling Gary’s way in three sets (11/15, 15/8, 15/8). That was the end of the Weightman’s roll, with the following three matches toppling to Dunkley Scales. Kat made short work of Tom in two sets, in their singles (15/4, 15/7). Brant came home with the goods against Cetty after a (15/6, 15/4) Win.

The second Doubles saw a close first set, but Brant and Kat were too strong for Tom and Cetty, notching up another Win, to bring the scores back to even.

Tom knocked out a Win playing Oliver in the last bracket of Singles (15/9, 15/6). Brant defeated Gary in a convincing two sets (15/6,15/2). This left both teams hanging on the last Match, which was between Kat and Cetty, with the tussle a bit too hard for Cetty, landing Dunkley with that match and a Win for the night (15/5, 15/7).

Winners – Dunkley Scales 6 to Weightmans Packaging 5 (games 14 to 10).

– Tankard Dental 8 (Derek Hung 3, Nathan Beard, Curtis Crabtree 2) d Mallee Meats 3 (Maria Starikov 2)

As mentioned, Mallee Meats needed a fill in, to cover for Selma Mayne, which Cetty Bonaccorso keenly took on.

The night started off with the first group of Singles games all going to Tankard in two set Wins. Maria Starikov put up a good fight, but Derek Hung just snatched it (15/12, 15/12). Jenny Leach gave it her best against Curtis Crabtree in the first set, but he hit his straps in the second (15/13, 15/7). Nathan Beard has a never say die game, which Cetty couldn’t overcome (15/8, 15/10).

It wasn’t until the Doubles pairing of Maria and Jen, that Mallee picked up their first Win, playing against Derek and Curtis in a hard hitting three setter (15/11, 7/15, 20/18). Derek overpowered Jen in their first Singles game, but the next two sets saw Jen cut back the margin, but not enough to take the Win from Derek (15/2, 12/15, 15/13). Maria proved too strong for Nathan, finishing off in a comfortable two sets, after numerous long rallies (15/5, 15/10).  It was looking like Cetty may give Curtis a good run, but he kept his eye on the Ball to add another Win (15/8, 15/9).

Mallee Meats needed the last Doubles to stay in the running and it was a good contest between the pair of Maria and Cetty against Derek and Nathan, which was pushed to three sets. In the end it was Tankard Dental who tipped the numbers in their favor, with the win giving them the victory on the night. (15/11, 13/15, 15/7).

Although the night had been settled, Jen and Nathan were up next and Jen just didn’t have her Mo Jo following and was beaten in two sets by, with Nathan very determined to Win (15/7, 15/12). Cetty put in a fabulous game against Derek, which went into three sets, ending with a very focused win from Derek (12/15, 15/7, 15/10). The last game of the night saw Maria and Curtis putting in a valiant effort to add a win for their teams. The cards fell in favor of Maria, in three sets (15/10, 13/15, 17/15).

Winners – Tankard Dental 8 to Mallee Meats 3 (games 17 to 10).
