ROUND TWO

2023/09/tt-r-2-summer-2023.pdf

PENNANT ONE:

Round two of the Sunraysia Table Tennis Summer pennant featured an amazing turnaround in form by Max Miller Carpets who in round one lost 0-11, this round they bounced back to win 8-3 against Regional Taxation Services. After two rounds each of the six teams now have a one win, one loss ratio.

– Max Miller Carpets 8 (Arhuang Lau 3, Liam Wood 2, Ed Hung 1) d Regional Taxation Services 3 (Jackson Tung 2, Leon Brown 1)

The Carpeters were led by Arhuang Lau, a new player to the STTA this competition. He won 3 singles including victories over the talented Jackson Tung and Leon Brown which indicates he will be an excellent acquisition to the association.

Lau received good support from teammates Liam Wood and Ed Hung who won two and one singles respectively. Victory in both doubles was a highlight for the Carpeters as well, proving that a week is a long time in table tennis.

– Mallee Bearings 6 (Wayne Carmichael 3, Reece Kurrle 2) d Cookes Pools & Spas 5 (Kate Carmichael 2, Jackson Murphy, Lee Leeson 1)

With Wayne Carmichael winning three singles again this round Mallee Bearings scored a narrow 6-5 victory over Cookes Pools & Spas to open their account for the season. Reece Kurrle won two singles including an important 12-15 15-8 15-5 win over Jackson Murphy. The doubles were shared in the close encounter.

For Mallee Bearings Kate Carmichael won two of her three singles.

– Weightmans Packaging 6 (Gavin Carmichael, Mark Dorman 2, Russell Walder 1) d Tankard Dental 5 (Thanh Nguyen 3, Rohan Reimers 1)

Weightmans Packaging grabbed fourth spot on the ladder with a hard fought 6-5 victory over Tankard Dental despite Thanh Nguyen again winning three singles. At one stage Weightmans led 4-2 however when Nguyen recovered from 11-14 in the third to win 16-14 against Gavin Carmichael Tankards took a 5-4 lead. At this point Carpeters Mark Dorman proved too steady for Rohan Reimers and then at five all Tankards Paul Kealley took the first game against Russell

Walder, this was an entertaining match with Walder just taking the second 16-14 to remain alive. Walder took an early ascendancy in the third before Kealley fought back to ten all before Walder steadied to win 15-12 enabling his team to enjoy their first win.

PENNANT TWO:

Another solid win to Weightmans Packaging in this round, and Max Miller Carpets and Mallee Meats record their first win for the season.

– Weightmans Packaging 8 (Shaun Gifford 3, Jeremy Corrin 2, Therese Fitzpatrick 1) d Mallee Bearings 3 (John Fitzpatrick, Josh Arnold, James Jarvis 1)

Shaun Gifford, recently promoted from pennant three to this pennant, was again the stand-out performer for his side in their second win of the season.

Gifford once again recorded three singles wins, outshining his captain Jeremy Corrin once again. Corrin once again recorded two wins, but he now knows that he has a great number two in his side.

Gifford had little trouble with Mallee Bearings number three James Jarvis in the first round of singles, winning that encounter 15-4, 15-13. It must be said though that James was nursing a sore knee, so was not as mobile as he would otherwise have been. In the next round of singles Gifford took on John Fitzpatrick, playing his first game of the season, and whilst he met sterner opposition from the newly minted captain, won in three sets 15-10, 12-15, 15-11. It is likely that when these teams play again in round seven Fitzpatrick will be much improved, as this was his first match since the winter grand final. In the final round of singles Gifford played his opposite number Josh Arnold, and whilst Arnold also took a set from his Weightmans Packaging opponent, Gifford took the honours 15-11, 9-15, 15-9.

Corrin defeated both Jarvis and Fitzpatrick in two sets, after having been downed by Arnold in the first round of singles in two sets 14-16, 16-18.

Therese Fitzpatrick also picked up a win, this against Arnold, who could not repeat his performance against Corrin, and fell to Therese in the second round of singles.

Weightmans Packaging took the honours in both doubles, Corrin and Gifford getting home easily in the third set against Fitzpatrick and Arnold 15-10, 10-15, 15-5. The second doubles was easier, Corrin and Therese Fitzpatrick defeated John Fitzpatrick and James Jarvis in two sets 17-15, 15-11.

Each of the Mallee Bearings players won one singles rubber, Arnold as already noted downed Jeremy Corrin, and John Fitzpatrick and James Jarvis both defeated Therese Fitzpatrick.

Final scores: 8 rubbers to 3 and 16 games to 9.

– Max Miller Carpets 6 (Jamie Kealley, Jordan Cole 2, Peter Fitzpatrick 1) d Cookes Pools & Spas 5 (Kevin Johns 3, Marcus Cimino 1)

Max Miller Carpets won an exciting match against Cookes Pools & Spas, the result coming in the final rubber.

Despite Cookes Pools & Spas captain Kevin Johns winning his three singles rubbers, and helping to win one doubles, his side just missed the win as the Max Miller Carpets team kept themselves in the match with wins coming at just the right time during the match. Each win by one side was matched by a win to the other, thus the decider coming in rubber number eleven.

The Max Miller Carpets side was best served by captain Jamie Kealley and

number two Jordan Cole, who was playing his first game of the season, having missed round one.

Kealley defeated both Marita Grace and Marcus Cimino in two sets, but in the final round of singles, he fell to Johns in two sets 10-15, 11-15. Cole likewise defeated his mother Marita 15-4, 15-4, but he had to work much harder against Cimino in a must win match, Max Miller Carpets at the time trailing four rubbers to five. Jordan rose to the occasion downing Marcus 13-15, 15-13, 15-11.

That left the two number three’s to determine the match, Peter Fitzpatrick for Max Miller Carpets and Marita Grace for Cookes Pools & Spas. Fitzpatrick on this occasion got the better of Grace, winning 15-11, 15-9.

Earlier, the doubles rubbers had been shared between the teams. Max Miller Carpets won the first doubles, Kealley and Jordan Cole coming from a set down to defeat Kevin Johns and Marcus Cimino 13-15, 15-13, 15-8. The second doubles resulted in a straight sets win 15-10, 15-13 to Johns and Marita Grace over Kealley and Fitzpatrick.

Final scores: 6 rubbers to 5 and 13 games to 12.

– Mallee Meats 7 (Terry Martin 3, Tom Morrison 2) d Pinnacle Packers 4 (Sony Sefer 2, Rasin Bhuiyan, Levi Williams 1)

Mallee Meats recorded their first win of the season against Pinnacle Packers, who won last round.

It proved to be a good night for Mallee Meats captain Terry Martin, Martin winning all he played in. He defeated Levi Williams 6 and 8, the difficult Rasin Bhuiyan 16-14, 15-11, and against opposing captain Sony Sefer (subbing for Daniel Jansen) recorded a three set victory 8-15, 15-4, 15-10. In the first doubles Terry and Tom Morrison had a comfortable win over Sefer and Bhuiyan 15-4, 15-11, and in the second Martin and Leon Bailey accounted for Sefer and Williams 17-15, 15-5.

Tom Morrison added to those five rubbers with two more wins, having a bit of trouble with Levi Williams back-spin chops before defeating him 18-16, 15-13, then a much easier win against Bhuiyan 15-12, 15-9.

The three Pinnacle Packers players all took a win, Sefer recorded two, the first against Morrison 15-13, 15-13, and in the next round of singles, after an easy win in the first set 15-2 against Leon Bailey things really tightened up, Bailey making Sefer work for the win, as he took the second set 15-13. Sefer responded in the third and took a close 15-13 win over Bailey. That was as close as Bailey got to a win, Bhuiyan downing him in two sets, and Williams winning in three, 15-4 in the final set.

Final scores: 7 rubbers to 4 and 16 games to 9.

PENNANT THREE:

Regional Taxation Services and Sammy’s Slammers were the winners this week, in two good contests.

– Regional Taxation Services 6 (Leo Parker 3, Nhat Dat 2) d Weightmans Packaging 5 (Sabrina Fitzpatrick 2, Glenn Leeson, Chelsey Avers 1)

Regional Taxation Services made it two wins from two games, this week defeating Weightmans Packaging six rubbers to five.

Leo Parker and Nhat Dat did the damage for Regional Taxation Services, Leo with three singles wins, and Nhat picking up two. And together they won the first doubles rubber against Sabrina Fitzpatrick (subbing for Karly Leach) and Glenn Leeson in a very competitive three setter 15-12, 16-18, 15-9.

Early days yet, but Parker and Dat sit at the head of the aggregate, and with their two wins to date being six rubbers to five, clearly show they have the resolve to fight to the end.

This was a much improved performance by the Weightmans Packaging side. Last week they started their season disastrously, winning just one of the eleven rubbers on offer. This match was more indicative of their true potential, and with Chelsey Avers making her debut this round (she was away last round), the side is certainly strengthened. Chelsey lost narrowly to Dat 13-15, 13-15, lost to Leo Parker in three sets8-15, 15-10, 6-15, then defeated her opposite number Brian White in another three set contest 11-15, 15-6, 15-11. To put a bit of icing on her cake, she and Sabrina Fitzpatrick were successful in the second doubles rubber, downing Leo Parker and White in two sets, 12 and 8.

Final scores: 6 rubbers to 5 and 14 games to 13.

– Sammy’s Slammers 7 (Nick Kiapekos, Steve Parker, Ryan Peterson 2) d Mallee Meats 4 (Steve Pongrac 2, Dave Tanner 1)

After losing five rubbers to six to Leo Parker’s Regional Taxation Services team in the first round, Nick Kiapekos turned things around in this match to down Mallee Meats seven rubbers to four.

Kiapekos, Steve Parker and Ryan Peterson each won two singles rubbers, and Parker and Peterson were too good for Steve Pongrac and Koby Grace in the second doubles, winning 5-15, 15-7, 16-14.

Kiapekos defeated Grace and Tanner, but fell to his opposite number Pongrac in two close sets, 16-18, 13-15. Parker downed Grace and Tanner too, but Pongrac was much too good for him, Steve losing 5-15, 5-15. And Ryan Peterson, after losing a close opening match to Tanner 13-15, 13-15, the proceeded to dispose of Pongrac in three sets 13-15, 15-13, 15-7 in a fine display, and in the final round of singles got the better of Grace 15-13, 15-10.

Pongrac and Tanner won three singles rubbers between them, then, and together they won the first doubles against Kiapekos and Parker in two sets 17-15, 15-12.

Final scores: 7 rubbers to 4 and 14 games to 10.

PENNANT FOUR:

Two close matches, both resulting in a six rubbers to five scoreline.

– Dunkley Scales 6 (Brandt Dolic, Katrina Clifford 2, Oliver Bremner 1) d Tankard Dental 5 (Nathan Beard 2, Curtis Crabtree, Derek Hung 1)

A very even match, in which all players took a singles win, the match was won by Dunkley Scales in the final rubber.

Katrina Clifford and Brandt Dolic did the lion’s share of the winning for Dunkley Scales, Clifford besting her opposite number Derek Hung in two sets 15-6, 15-10, and later a two set win against Curtis Crabtree. Dolic for his part, after losing to his opposite number Crabtree in a very close competitive three setter 15-17, 16-14, 13-15, then played two more three setters, firstly against Nathan Beard, winning a close match 12-15, 16-14, 15-13, and in the final rubber, the one which would ultimately decide the winner of this contest, he got the better of Derek Hung to win 12-15, 16-14, 15-9.

Together Clifford and Dolic won the first doubles rubber, accounting for the combination of Derek Hung and Curtis Crabtree comfortably 15-6, 15-12.

Oliver Bremner continued his debut season with another win, a great three set contest with Curtis Crabtree. Bremner took the first set comfortably 15-9, Crabtree worked his way back into the match 15-12 in the second set, but Bremner really buckled down in the third set to eke out the win 15-13.

For Tankard Dental, it was their number three Nathan Beard who contributed best. Nathan was successful against Bremner 15-7, 15-11, and later knocked over Dunkley Scales captain Katrina Clifford in straight sets 15-11, 15-9. And Nathan and his captain Derek Hung were successful in the second doubles against Clifford and Bremner 15-12, 10-15, 16-14.

Hung and Crabtree got one singles rubber each, Hung downed Bremner in two sets, and Crabtree was victorious against Brandt Dolic 17-15, 14-16, 15-13.

Final scores: 6 rubbers to 5 and 14 games to 13.

– Mallee Meats 6 (Maria Starikov 2, Selma Mayne, Ildi Healy 1) d Weightmans Packaging 5 (Wendy Simpson 3, Tom Gilmour 2)

Despite winning five of the nine singles rubbers on offer, Weightmans Packaging could not close out the win in this match against Mallee Meats.

Wendy Simpson, subbing for absent Weightmans Packaging number two Gary Leach was untouchable in singles play, getting the better of Ildi Healy in three sets 15-5, 16-18, 15-13, likewise Maria Starikov 14-16, 15-10, 15-10 before putting all that good practice together to down Selma Mayne in straight sets 15-10, 15-7.

Weightmans Packaging captain Tom Gilmour won two rubbers, a straight sets win against Mayne, and just scraping over the line against Ildi Healy 14-16, 15-11, 15-13.

But those five rubbers simply were not enough, and Mallee Meats whilst winning the remaining four singles rubbers, took both of the doubles encounters.

Maria Starikov won two singles, and Ildi Healy and Selma Mayne one each. The first doubles rubber was a good contest, but Starikov and Healy proved the better combination in the match against Gilmour and Simpson winning 13-15, 15-11, 15-6. Then Starikov and Selma Mayne took a straight sets win over Gilmour and Alma McKay 15-9, 15-10.

Final scores: 6 rubbers to 5 and 15 games to 12.
