PENNANT ONE:

After a strong win last week in round one , Exposed Signage/Apparel with another solid 7-4 win over Tankard Dental have moved to top position on the Sunraysia Table Tennis summer pennant ladder.  Whilst Matt Ljubic won his customary three singles it was the young guns Dylan Wood and Casper McCarthy who dominated the proceedings winning two singles each. Seventeen year old McCarthy in his first pennant one season again won two singles to repeat his round one success.

– Exposed Signage/Apparel 7 (Matt Ljubic 3, Dylan Wood, Casper McCarthy 2) d Tankard Dental 4 (Kate Carmichael 2)

McCarthy defeated two experienced campaigners in Thahn Nguyen and pen gripper Eddie Hung in an impressive display. The match of the night was the Nguyen versus McCarthy singles with McCarthy winning the first , Nguyen raced through the second comfortably and in a tight finish McCarthy took the match 15-11 3-15 16-14. Tankards maintained pressure early and actually led 4-3 before the Exposed trio bandied together to win four of the last five matches.

– Regional Taxation Services 7 (Nicholas Dorman 3, Mark Dorman 2, Ashley Morrison 1) d Max Miller Carpets 4 (Gavin Carmichael 2, Reece Kurrle 1)

Regional Taxation Services also remain undefeated after their comfortable 7-4 victory over Max Miller Carpets. Last round father Mark won three singles and son Nicholas Dorman on his return won two. This round they reversed roles with Nicholas in control winning his three singles comfortably while Mark won two. They remain undefeated in doubles and if they maintain this form RTS will be difficult to beat. Team mate Ash Morrison chipped in with a singles when he downed fellow number three Russell Walder 12-15 16-14 15-10. RTS have started the season strongly.

– Mallee Bearings 6 (Jackson Tung, Leon Brown 2) d Cookes Pools & Spas 5 (Wayne Carmichael, Lee Leeson 2, Liam Wood 1)

The remaining match was the closest of the night with Mallee Bearings recording their first win of the season 6-5 over Cookes Pools & Spas who were brave in defeat.

Despite losing to Wayne Carmichael both Jackson Tung and Leon Brown played key roles in the victory. Both won two singles and they teamed together to win the first doubles while Tung paired up with Michael Hensgen to win the important second doubles. Brown recovered from a slow start last round to record his first ever win over Cookes skipper Wayne Carmichael in three sets 15-10 11-15 15-12 an impressive win! For Cookes Lee Leeson was a standout defeating Brown in three sets in the first match of the night and later she proved too good for Michael Hensgen winning in straight sets.

The competition now goes in to recess for two weeks over the school holidays.

PENNANT TWO:

Weightmans Packaging made it two wins from two starts, as did Sammy’s Slammers. In the remaining matches, Tankard Dental and MJM Automotive, after losing in the first round, picked up a win this time.

– Weightmans Packaging 7 (Shane Carmichael 3, John Fitzpatrick, Peter Fitzpatrick 1) d MMC 4 (Jeremy Corrin 2, David Sergi, Jordan Cole 1)

Shane Carmichael picked up his second three win haul for the season as he helped his team to a 7 rubbers to 4 victory against Max Miller Carpets. Carmichael proved too strong for Jeremy Corrin’s team, dropping just two sets for the night, one to Corrin, and the other to his number two David Sergi. He also helped team-mates, John Fitzpatrick and Peter Fitzpatrick to wins in both doubles rubbers, with John downing Corrin and Sergi easily 15-3, 15-10, and later with Peter a closer first set, before defeating Corrin and Jordan Cole 17-15, 15-4.

Along with those five rubbers, the Fitzpatricks won one singles rubber each, John winning in three sets against his opposite number David Sergi, and Peter in straight sets against his opposite number Cole.

For Max Miller Carpets, they were not far away – Corrin won two singles, but lost to Carmichael in three sets; David Sergi and Jordan Cole both one one rubber; Sergi had a good tussle with Weightmans Packaging number three Peter Fitzpatrick winning 15-13, 8-15, 15-10, while Jordan Cole had a straight sets victory against John Fitzpatrick in the first rubber of the night.

This was a close match throughout, the scores were level, 4 rubbers all after the second doubles, but Weightmans Packaging then won the last three rubbers to run out solid winners.

Final scores: 7 rubbers to 4 and 16 games to 11.

– Sammy’s Slammers 7 (Peter Midgley, Ryan Hensgen 2, Therese Fitzpatrick 1) d Cookes Pools & Spas 4 (Kevin Johns, Terry Martin 2)

Sammy’s Slammers took their second win of the season, thanks to a good team effort, both in singles and doubles.

With captain Jason Gifkins still unavailable, Peter Midgley stepped up for the second week, and helped Sammy’s Slammers to a 7 rubbers to 4 win.

The night started with a surprise win by Sammy’s Slammers number three Ryan Hensgen over Cookes Pools & Spas number two, Terry Martin. Martin has much more experience playing in this grade, whilst Hensgen was only promoted to pennant two for the recent winter competition. Martin actually won more points in the match, but Hensgen won them at

the right time to take the win 16-14, 8-15, 17-15 and get his side off to a great start.

Martin was on the wrong end of the scoreline a couple of rubbers later when he and captain Kevin Johns fell to Midgley and up-and-comer Therese Fitzpatrick in the first doubles. Therese more than held her own in the company of these three more experienced players, helping Midgley to win 15-12, 15-7 and give Sammy’s Slammers a 3-1 lead at the time.

Martin did get a little bit of revenge though in the very next rubber when he defeated Midgley in a good three setter. After losing the first set 13-15, Terry proved too strong in the remaining two sets, winning them 15-9, 15-7.

Midgley would finish the night with two wins, as would Hensgen, Fitzpatrick took one, and had an interesting three set loss to Martin in the final round of singles.

The icing on the cake for Sammy’s Slammers was wins in both doubles – after Midgley and Fitzpatrick won the first, Midgley and Hensgen won a closer second doubles rubber, this one against Johns and Steve Pongrac 12-15, 15-12, 15-11.

For Cookes Pools & Spas, Johns and Martin won two singles each.

Final scores: 7 rubbers to 4 and 16 games to 10.

– Tankard Dental 6 (Quentin Clark 3, Marcus Cimino, Tague Morris 1) d Mallee Meats 5 (Rohan Reimers, Jamie Kealley 2)

In a very hard-fought match, Tankard Dental defeated Mallee Meats by the slimmest of margins, 6 rubbers to 5 and 16 games to 15. Although nine of the eleven rubbers went to the maximum three sets, Tankard Dental had the match won after the ninth rubber.

Mallee Meats number three Jamie Kealley got his side off to a great start, downing his opposite number Tague Morris in a long three set match 20-22, 15-12, 15-9. Tankard Dental then rattled off the next five rubbers,

captain Quentin Clark who would end the night with three wins, winning two in this run, and his team-mates Marcus Cimino and Tague Morris one each. Sandwiched in the middle of these wins was a tense doubles match – Clark and Cimino just getting over the line against Rohan Reimers and Jamila Belbaze 16-14, 15-12.

With five rubbers still to be played, and with only one of them needed to secure victory, Tankard Dental came under attack from a fired-up Mallee

Meats team. Reimers defeated Cimino in straight sets, then teamed with Kealley in the second doubles winning that 15-12, 11-15, 15-10. Sadly, for Mallee Meats it was all over in the next rubber, Clark getting the better of Belbaze in three sets. Kealley and Reimers were not about to throw the towel in though, as they both won the last two rubbers; Kealley an impressive performance against Cimino with his win 15-13, 11-15, 17-15, and Reimers too steady for the persistent Tague Morris 13-15, 15-9, 15-7.

Final scores: 6 rubbers to 5 and 16 games to 15.

– MJM Automotive 6 (Rohan Reimers, Isaiah Bettess 2, Michael Smyth 1) d Pinnacle Packers 5 (Paul Kealley 3, Sabrina Fitzpatrick 1)

MJM Automotive did a mighty job in winning this match with Pinnacle Packers. Without captain Raymund Manzanares, Rohan Reimers doubled up, playing for his own team Mallee Meats, and also in this contest.

Reimers contributed two wins to the tally, defeating the number two and three players for Pinnacle Packers, James Jarvis and Sabrina Fitzpatrick. The player who really stood up for MJM Automotive though was number three Isaiah Bettess.

Bettess won the night’s first rubber, a flip-of-the-coin win against Jarvis 16-14, 14-16, 18-16. These two are nothing if not persistent!! He added to that win with a straight sets win in the night’s final rubber, against opposite number Sabrina Fitzpatrick. In between he and number two Michael Smyth took a stirring three set win against Paul Kealley and Fitzpatrick. After taking the first set 15-13, Kealley and Fitzpatrick prevailed in a marathon second set 21-19. The MJM Automotive pair, far from being down about that second set loss, roared through the final set 15-7 to square the match at 4 rubbers all.

Paul Kealley took his third win for the night in the next rubber, defeating his opposite number (for the night) Reimers, but MJM Automotive were on a mission, Michael Smyth took a timely first win of the season over Jarvis 15-12, 15-13, and then Bettess finished the job with the win over Fitzpatrick.

For Pinnacle Packers, Paul Kealley won three singles, Sabrina Fitzpatrick one (against Michael Smyth in two sets), and Kealley and Jarvis were too strong for Reimers and Smyth in the first doubles, winning 8 and 10.

Final scores: 6 rubbers to 5 and 12 games all.

PENNANT THREE:

In Round two action Mallee Meats have carried on with their dominant form from last week with a crushing 8 rubbers to 3 victory over Weightmans Packaging.

– Mallee Meats 8 (Levi Williams. Shaun Gifford 3, Huseyin Ismail 1) d Weightmans Packaging 3 (Gayle Cottrell, Ben Hosking 1)

Again, the main architects of this dominant display were Shaun Gifford and Levi Williams who each contributes three singles victories each as well as pairing to win their doubles match. Huseyin Ismail then added the icing to the cake as he contributed a singles victory of his own late in the night. For Weightmans Packaging Gayle Cottrell and Ben Hosking both contributed one singles each while fill in and debutant Steve Parker improved his play during the night as he adjusted to the pace of the competition.

The game of the night was Ben Hosking versus Huseyin Ismail. Ismail started like a house on fire as he easily accounted for the first set 15-8. Hosking then started the long haul back into the match by claiming a tight second set 15-13. The third set was point for point with extra time required when the scores reached 14 all. With the match on a knifes edge Hosking used all his big-time game experience to edge past Ismail 16-14 in a great match.

Alas this match was one of very highlights for Weightmans Packaging as they have been defeated by the sizzling Mallee Meats 8 rubbers to 3 (18 games to 7).

In after match comments Gavin Carmichael has told his sister Gayle Cottrell that her team will fire soon as he is expecting big things from Ben Hosking coming into finals. No pressure Ben!

– Dunkley Scales 6 (Nick Kiapekos, Nhat Dat 2, Marita Grace 1) d Sammy’s Slammers 5 (Karly Leach 3, Rodney Galvin 1)

Dunkley Scales have edged out Sammy’s Slammers 6 rubbers to 5 in a great contest that went right down to the last match of the evening. The winners had a balanced contribution from all players with Captain Nick Kiapekos and number two Nhat Dat winning two singles each and Marita Grace winning a very important singles match. For the vanquished Slammer’s Captain Karly Leach was in great form winning three singles whilst Rodney Galvin contributed one singles victory and teamed with Leach to win their doubles match.

There were six great three set matches during the evening and youngster Leo Parker was involved in three of these. The first match of the evening Parker took on Dat in an excellent match. Parker had the better of the first set taking this 15-12 before Dat ramped up his attacking game to breeze through the second 15-5. Although Parker tried his best to keep in the rallies it would be the more experienced Dat that would prevail 15-10 to get Dunkley’s off to a dream start.

The second match of the evening pitted Karly Leach up against Marita Grace. This match also went right down to the wire with Grace getting off to a fast start in taking the first set but then to be reeled in by Leach who claimed the remaining two sets. The final score-line 12-15, 15-10, 15-12 did indicate the closeness of this match with Grace still lamenting this loss some days later when turning snags at the Bunnings barbeque.

Although beaten in this match Grace did play an important role in her team’s overall performance. With the scores deadlocked at five rubbers all Grace she took on Parker in the final match of the evening in another great three-set match. With it all on the line Parker calmly took the first set 15-13 before Grace turned up the burners to take the next two sets 15-11, 15-10 to propel her team to a memorable victory.

The final analysis sees Dunkley Scales victorious 6 rubbers to 5 (14 games all) against a gallant Sammy’s Slammers. Well done everyone on a great match.

PENNANT FOUR:

In Pennant 4 there were two very comfortable wins for Mallee Meats and MJM Automotive. We would also like to welcome back Helen Healy after a long hiatus from competition play.

– Mallee Meats 9 (Tom Gilmour 3, Maria Starikov, Jim Vale 2) d Weightmans Packaging 2 (Glenn Leeson 2)

The entire Mallee Meats team were in blistering form with Tom Gilmour leading the charge in winning his three singles and two doubles matches in an impressive display. Gilmour was well supported by Jim Vale and Maria Starikov who both contributed two singles victories of their own. For Weightmans Packaging Captain Glenn Leeson played well to secure two singles victories and could consider himself a little unfortunate not to claim three as he and

Tom Gilmour played an excellent three set match with Gilmour sneaking over the line 15-13 in the final set.

Even though the score-line did not flatter the Packers there were some positive signs as they were highly competitive in both doubles matches; however, unfortunately losing both these matches in the deciding set. I am sure Glenn ‘Clarko’ Leeson is working hard behind the scenes and has eight weeks to mould his team of Helen Healy and Liam Nicolaou into a more than competitive unit.

In conclusion Mallee Meats have skewered their opposition Weightmans Packaging 9 rubbers to 2 (18 games to 8) in a powerful display with Tom Gilmour cleaning up all before him including the Bunnings barbeque hotplate which has never looked so sparkling clean. Great effort Tom.

– MJM Automotive 8 (Hamish Smyth, Wendy Simpson 3) d Exposed Signage/Apparel 3 (Keith Sharman, Phuong Hung Nguyen, Derek Hung 1)

MJM has had a big win over Exposed Signage and Apparel. In a repeat performance from last week both Wendy Simpson and Hamish Smyth have both won three singles and then combined to win their doubles match. Koby Grace had a quiet night but did manage to team with Simpson to secure the second doubles match. For Exposed all three players Phuong Hung Nguyen, Keith Sharman and Derek Hung all contributed one singles victory.

It would be fair to say that the feature match of the evening featured Wendy Simpson up against Keith Sharman. Simpson has been coaching the fast-improving Sharman and the burning question on everyone’s lips, “Would it be to her detriment to the result of this match?”. Well on this occasion the answer is, “No!”. Simpson just had enough tricks to outlast Sharman in two tight sets 17-15, 15-13. With this win Simpson got to choose if she was going to cook the sausages or the onions at the Bunnings barbeque – great job on the onions Keith – I somehow knew this match would end in tears.

This was not the only close match that Simpson was involved in. Another tight tussle would ensure with Nguyen. This match requited two tie-break sets with Simpson prevailing 19-17, 16-14. In the last match of the evening Derek Hung had a very good consolation win against Koby Grace in three sets.

In conclusion well done to MJM Automotive who have skittled Exposed Signage and Apparel 8 rubbers to 3 (17 games to 7).

In late news: Koby Grace has narrowly failed in his attempt to set a new world record for the most numbers of sausages consumed at the Bunnings barbeque. Bad luck Koby; however, great effort by helping on the day – much appreciated. And finally, well done to all players who donated their time for the Bunning barbeque – another great team effort.

Please note there will be a two-week break from competition that will resumes on October 4th. Also Monday night hitting will continue from 7:30pm throughout the holidays.

See you all soon.

– MJM Automotive 8 (Hamish Smyth, Wendy Simpson 3) d Exposed Signage/Apparel 3 (Keith Sharman, Phuong Hung Nguyen, Derek Hung 1)
