ROUND 6
Scoresheets-Summer-2024-R6.pdf
PENNANT ONE:
Round 6 results of the Sunraysia Table Tennis Summer Pennant featured the undefeated Weightmans Packaging continuing on their winning way, Choices Flooring Mildura recording their second win in succession after being winless for the first four rounds while Mallee Bearings moved to second on the ladder with their third win. Two wins separated second to sixth after the previous round and now with round six results going the way they did the difference between these teams is now only one win in what is proving to me a close hard-fought competition.

Weightmans Packaging 7 (Wayne Carmichael 3, Russell Walder, Lee Leeson 1) d Cookes Pools & Spas 4 (Mark Dorman, Dylan Wood 2)
By winning his usual three singles Wayne Carmichael led Weightmans Packaging to a solid 7-4 victory over Cookes Pools & Spas who despite this loss hold fourth position on the ladder.
Carmichael’s teammates Russell Walder and Lee Leeson won a singles each to offer sound support as well as teaming with Carmichael to win both doubles.
For Cookes Mark Dorman continued his consistent season again winning two singles for the fifth time while Dylan Wood also won two matches using his strong forehand.
– Choices Flooring Mildura 7 (Reece Kurrle, Daniel Jansen 2, Dylan Wood 1) d Tankard Dental 4 (Jamie Kealley 2, Paul Kealley, Rohan Reimers 1)
The Choices Flooring Mildura team were winless two rounds ago and with their 7-4 victory over Tankard Dental they now have won two matches in succession and will go in to their next match full of confidence. In this victory over Tankard’s Reece Kurrle was in good form winning two singles and taking part in both doubles’ victories however the match winner for Choices was their number three player Daniel Jansen in his birthday week.
Jansen won two singles, the first against opposing number two player Paul Kealley in a marathon five setter after trailing one game to two 11-7 7-11 8-11 11-9 11-8, later Jansen then outlasted the inform youngster Jamie Kealley who earlier had his best win in this pennant defeating opposing captain Reece Kurrle in another five-set slog. Jansen defeated young Kealley after surviving three match points in the fifth 11-7 6-11 11-9 13-15 13-11 a tremendous contest.
Tankards after winning two for their first three matches have now lost their past three however a highlight for their team is the form of Jamie Kealley in his first pennant one season, in this match he won two singles and narrowly lost the third a big effort from the young number three.
– Mallee Bearings 7 (Jackson Tung 3, Jackson Murphy 2) d Regional Taxation Services 4 (Kate Carmichael 2, Jason Gifkins, Thanh Nguyen 1)
With a 7-4 victory over Regional Taxation Services, Mallee Bearings edged ahead of their opponents to second place on the ladder albeit by percentage only. Bearings skipper Jackson Tung continued his good form winning three singles including a lengthy five set match against Kate Carmichael. Tung narrowly lost the first, narrowly won the second, controlled the third, narrowly lost the fourth and then motored away in the fifth to win 10-12 11-9 11-6 12-14 11-3. In the fourth game spectators witnessed a rare shot when Carmichael attempted a backhand retrieve to a high ball only to miss the ball completely, she then had time to swat a strange forehand and hit an awkward winner much to Tung’s dismay.
Jackson Murphy filling in for Mallee Bearings played a key role in his teams’ victory winning two singles and partnering Tung to a win in the first doubles.

Pinnacle Packers 8 Rasin Bhuiyan (2), Duy Truong (2), Therese Fitzpatrick (2) defeated Cookes Pools and Spas 3 Ashley Morrison (3), David (0), Nhat Dat (0).
A crushing loss for Cookes in round 6 who have so far been fairly steady this season with 3 wins and 2 losses; losing twice to Weightman’s Packaging, who sit atop the ladder. Cookes skipper Morrison won his three singles, but his teammates were unable to help him out. This was due in no small part to fill-in Duy Truong, who has shown fine form all season, who subbed in for Ryan Peterson on Packers’s side.
Packers put the pressure on Cookes early in the night,
with No.3 Fitzpatrick cleanly defeating opposing 2 Sergi in straight sets 11-8, 11-4, 11-3. Then captain Bhuiyan took the second rubber by defeating Dat in four 11-6, 11-5, 10-12, 11-4. Substitute Truong then briefly struggled against Morrison but went down in three, 11-13, 7-11, 2-11. Then, the first doubles match pitted Bhuiyan and Truong against Morrison and Sergi in a nail-bitting game which could have gone to either side. First, Packers took the first set 11-9, then Cookes swooped in and took the next two 11-8, 11-5. Despite this lead, Packers were able to reload and regroup and took the fourth and fifth sets 11-3, 11-9; gaining a lead of 3 rubbers to 1.
Bhuiyan then nabbed his side’s fourth rubber by defeating Sergi in another tense five setter. Sergi won the first 11-5, Bhuiyan the second 11-3, Sergi just took the third 11-9, but then Bhuiyan struggled through and was able to clench the win, 11-9, 11-6.
Morrison then briefly halted Packers progress with a win over Fitzpatrick, 5-11, 11-8, 11-8, 11-6, but then Truong soundly defeated his teammate Dat in 3 sets, 11-3, 11-4, 11-4. Then to seal their victory, Packers duo Bhuiyan and Fitzpatrick took the win in the second doubles in three sets, 11-5, 11-9, 11-5; the score 6 games to 2.
Morrison got his third singles win over Bhuiyan in three 11-6, 11-4, 11-7; the only three rubbers for his team that night. Truong then went up against Sergi, the former proving too good and gaining the win in three, 12-10, 11-6, 13-11. In the final match, Fitzpatrick defeated Dat also in a three setter, 11-7, 11-8, 15-13.
Final score 8 rubbers to 3 and 25 games to 14.
Mallee Meats 6 John Fitzpatrick (3), Mark Cleary (2), Michael Hensgen (0) defeated Weightman’s Packaging 5 Josh Arnold (2), Harry Gujral (1), James Jarvis (1).
A close game for Mallee Meats and Weightman’s Packaging, with Meats just clenching the win 6-5. Meat’s No. 3 Riley Clemence was once again absent, so Michael Hensgen played in his place.
Up first was Hensgen and Gujral, who duked it out to five sets with Gujral taking the win, 11-8, 5-11, 11-8, 9-11, 11-9. Fitzpatrick then took out Jarvis comfortably in three, 11-7, 11-4, 11-3. Then, teammate Cleary stepped up to play Arnold and went down in four sets but not without a fight, 7-11, 5-11, 11-4, 7-11. Onto the first doubles match which saw Meats duo Fitzpatrick and Cleary take on Weightman’s Arnold and Gujral, the former emerging victorious 11-7, 11-5, 4-11, 11-8; the score now 2 games to 2.
Fitzpatrick marked down the third rubber for his side with a short but hard-fought win over Gujral, 12-10, 12-10, 11-8. Substitute Hensgen brought his A-game to take on Arnold but came off second best 6-11,
11-6, 5-11, 8-11. Up next, Cleary didn’t waste any time putting Jarvis down, taking the flag in three sets 11-1, 11-5, 11-5. The score now sat at 4-3 in Meats’s favour, but Weightmans levelled it in the night’s second doubles match, with Arnold and Jarvis getting it done in three 11-4, 13-11, 11-9.
The two number ones then faced off, Arnold taking the first set 11-5, but Fitzpatrick remained steady and took the next three 11-5, 11-7, 11-9, bringing the score to 5-4. Cleary then solidified his team’s win with a victory over Gujral in straight sets 11-6, 11-3, 11-7.
In the final rubber, Hensgen, after a bold effort, would go home empty handed, losing to Jarvis in four, 4-11, 13-15, 11-6, 4-11.
Final score 6 rubbers to 5 and 23 games to 17.
