– Cookes Pools & Spas 6 (Mark Dorman, Dylan Wood Ed Hung 2) d Weightmans Packaging 5 (Wayne Carmichael 3)
Ladder leader Weightmans Packaging , who held first position for the duration of the ten week season, came up against fourth team Cookes Pools & Spas and despite Weightmans skipper Wayne Carmichael winning three singles and taking part in both doubles victories it was the Cookes trio of Mark Dorman, Dylan Wood and Ed Hung by winning two singles each who were able to win 6-5 and now have advanced to the grand final.
The first match of the night was a highlight when Cookes Dylan Wood was just able to shake off Weightmans number three Lee Leeson in a lengthy five set tussle which contained many long rallies. Wood taking the points against his experienced opponent 11-8 11-4 10-12 9-11 11-8.
The first doubles was an entertaining match with the Weightmans pair of Wayne Carmichael and Russell Walder defeating Mark Dorman and Dylan Wood 5-11 11-8 8-11 11-5 11-9. The scores now two rubbers each.
The next block of three singles potentially shaped the victory for Cookes. Weightmans’ Carmichael as expected defeated Dylan Wood in straight sets, while Cookes skipper Mark Dorman downed Lee Leeson in another three setter.
These matches were followed by Weightmans number two Russell Walder up against Ed Hung, the number three for Cookes. Walder raced through the first game before Hung then steadied taking the second narrowly. Both players were nervous and there were some long rallies before Hung grabbed the third in another very close game. Hung then gained the ascendancy and confidence in the fourth to go on and win 4-11 14-12 12-10 11-5 a huge result for his team.
As always the second doubles was crucial and it was the Weightmans pair of Wayne Carmichael and Lee Leeson who just kept their noses in front of Mark Dorman and Ed Hung to win in four sets. The scores now stood at four rubbers all with three singles to be played.
Weightmans’ Carmichael then gave his team a 5-4 lead when he accounted for fellow leftie Dorman in three sets. Cookes number two Dylan Wood took to the table against Russell Walder knowing victory was his only option to keep his team alive. Wood’s form of late had been very good and he did not let his team down winning in three tight sets.
The scores now stood at five rubbers all, two nervous players took to the table, Ed Hung for Cookes and Lee Leeson for Weightmans. Anxious teammates watched on as Hung was able to slowly gain the ascendancy and much to the excitement of his teammates he would go on and win 12-10 11-7 12-10 taking Cookes Pools & Spas to the grand final. For Hung this was a satisfying performance given in the previous two meetings between these two teams throughout the season he had not been able to win a singles.
– Regional Taxation Services 6 (Kate Carmichael 3, Thanh Nguyen 2, Jason Gifkins 1) d Mallee Bearings 5 (Jackson Tung 2, Liam Wood 1)
The remaining semi-final featured second placed Mallee Bearings taking on third team Regional Taxation Services and what a spectacle this was. Over the season each team scored a victory against the other, expectations were that it would be a close result. The first block of three singles went as expected with Regional Taxation Services taking a 2-1 lead however from here Mallee Bearings took control.
Bearings pair Jackson Tung and Liam Wood played well in the first doubles downing Kate Carmichael and Thanh Nguyen 11-7 4-11 13-11 4-11 11-8 in a thriller.
The next block of three singles went as expected with Mallee Bearings winning two and going to a 4-3 lead. RTS were now under pressure and needed the second doubles however the Bearings pair of Jackson Tung and Tom Morrison would keep their opponents Kate Carmichael and Jason Gifkins at bay and go on and win 12-10 11-8 11-8. Mallee Bearings were now leading 5-3 and appeared to be grand final bound.
Knowing her team was under extreme pressure Kate Carmichael showed great determination defeating opposing number one Jackson Tung 12-10 11-9 11-9 a great tussle between the second (Tung) and third placed players on the singles aggregate. Tung was the victor in their previous two matches throughout the season.
With his team still trailing 4-5 RTS number two Thanh Nguyen, despite injuring his back earlier in the night, proved too steady for Liam Wood winning in straight sets. The score now stood at five rubbers all and this was now officially a thriller.
Bearings number three Tom Morrison and RTS number three Jason Gifkins then played an outstanding five set contest, Morrison going in as slight favourite and it was he who was away taking the first game comfortably. Gifkins then took control of the match winning the next two games, teammates from both sides were now fidgety as Morrison worked his way back taking the fourth with some fine forehand winners. Morrison placed his team in a commanding position racing to a 6-0 lead in the fifth however Gifkins then played his best table tennis for the season drawing closer and closer and finally reeling in Morrison at 9 points all in an outstanding comeback.
The next rally went back and forward and amazingly it was Gifkins who took a match point. Morrison had given his all however in one of the greatest comebacks in a final Gifkins, much to the excitement of his teammates, grabbed the winning point to score a memorable five set victory 5-11 11-3 11-8 8-11 11-9.
The Regional Taxation Services trio of Kate Carmichael, Thanh Nguyen and Jason Gifkins in an even team performance won three, two and one singles respectively to advance to the grand final.
Victory had come for Regional Taxation Services despite not winning a doubles. For the unlucky Mallee Bearings skipper Jackson Tung won two singles as well as taking part in both doubles victories.
The grand final takes place at the Irymple Leisure Centre from 7.15pm on Wednesday night.

Pinnacle Packers 6 Rasin Bhuiyan (2), Ryan Peterson (2), Therese Fitzpatrick (1) defeated Weightman’s Packaging 5 Josh Arnold (3), Harry Gujral (1), James Jarvis (0).
In what was a very tight contest which could have gone to either side, Pinnacle Packers secured their place in the 2024 Summer season grand final after nail biting win over Weightman’s Packaging. Packers’ No. 2 player Ryan Peterson showed good form, winning two of his singles matches while Weightman’s captain Josh Arnold took out three singles wins but it ultimately wasn’t enough to get his team home.
Weightmans took the first rubber of the night with Gujral defeating Fitzpatrick in four sets 11-7, 11-9, 6-11, 11-9. Packers skipper Bhuiyan then bested Jarvis in three 11-3, 11-4, 11-2 and then Arnold took out Peterson, again in three sets 11-7, 11-3, 11-7. Weightmans took the lead 3 rubbers to 1 with a victory in the first doubles match, with Arnold and Gujral going up against Bhuiyan and Peterson. Packers won the first set 11-3, but Weightmans found their stride and recovered to take the next three sets 11-8, 13-11, 11-9.
Now 3-1 down, Packers needed to start putting some pressure on Weightmans. Bhuiyan led the charge by defeating Gujral, 11-7, 11-7, 11-5. Up next, captain Arnold gave no quarter to Fitzpatrick, downing her in three 11-3, 11-4, 11-7. Peterson and Jarvis then squared off, with Jarvis giving Peterson a run for his money in the second set but ultimately losing, 7-11, 17-19, 8-11. The second doubles was a back and forth scrap; Weightmans eager to gain their fifth rubber but with
Packers refusing to back down. Weightmans took the first set 13-11, Packers fired back, winning the second 11-8, Weightmans then clenched the third 14-12 and had they won the next set the night could very well have been theirs, but it was not to be; Packers just getting ahead in the fourth and fifth, winning 11-8, 12-10.
The score sat at 4-4 when Arnold and Gujral stepped up to the table. Both were adamant to tip the night in each teams favour but only one could be the victor. Arnold struck the first blow, winning the first and second sets 11-9, 11-6, but Bhuiyan, always cool headed and methodical, took the next two sets 11-7, 11-7. It was any either mans game going into the fifth, but Arnold beat back Bhuiyan’s efforts soundly and took the win 11-3. The score now 5-4, one more match win would get Weightmans home.
But Packers had their eye on the prize and did not relent, with Peterson defeating Gujral in straight sets 11-1, 11-7, 11-4 and Fitzpatrick taking down Jarvis in four 11-9, 7-11, 11-8, 12-10.
Weightmans should be pleased with their efforts that night and throughout all this season, with all players performing their absolute best. Congrats to Packers who will go on to play Mallee Meats in the grand final next week.
Final score 6 rubbers to 5 and 22 games to 18.
Mallee Meats 6 John Fitzpatrick (3), Duy Truong (2), Riley Clemence (0), defeated Cookes Pools and Spas 4 Ashley Morrison (2), David Sergi (1), Nhat Dat (0).
Mallee Meats were able to repeat their Round 10 win over Cookes Pools and Spas in the preliminary final, winning the night 6 games to 4. Meats’ Mark Cleary was absent, so Duy Truong substituted.
In the opening rubber Clemence went down to Sergi in three sets 4-11, 9-11, 8-11, while teammate Fitzpatrick took a win over Dat also in
three 11-3, 11-4, 11-9. Truong then looked poised to defeat Morrison, taking the opposing captain to five sets, but Morrison stood firm, winning 11-6, 10-12, 7-11, 11-8, 11-9. Then, Meats duo Fitzpatrick and Truong fought hard in the first doubles but came away empty handed, losing 10-12, 10-12, 6-11.
Fitzpatrick bested Sergi after three sets, 11-6, 11-6, 11-5, and Clemence fell to Morrison in four 9-11, 6-11, 11-4, 7-11. Truong then defeated Dat in three sets 11-6, 11-5, 11-4, and in what was the highlight game of the night Meats snatched victory from the jaws of defeat in the second doubles match. Cookes pair Morrison and Dat took the first two sets 11-6, 11-8, but Fitzpatrick and Clemence defied the odds and turned the game completely around, winning the next three sets 11-4, 11-6, 11-9, leveling the score 4-4.
The battle for the fifth rubber then began, Fitzpatrick taking the first two sets against Morrison 11-8, 11-8, Morrison halting Fitzpatrick by winning the third 11-6, but succumbing in the fourth 11-8. It was now or never for Cookes, but Sergi couldn’t keep up with Truong and went down in three sets 11-5, 11-6, 11-8, granting the victory to Meats.
Commiserations to Cookes Pools and Spas who have played well all season and congrats to Mallee Meats who will go on to face Pinnacle Packers next week to see who will be crowned premiers of the 2024 Pennant 2 Summer Season.

Koby Grace, put together two great singles wins and paired up well with his team mates, Hayden and Ildi, to win both Doubles.
Karly Leach had to face Deegan Kerslake, in a rematch of the Super 8’s, of which Deegan was declared the winner on Monday night. This contest also went to three sets and turned out to be an awesome watch. Deegan won two singles and Sam also generated two wins, with her match against Karly going all the way, with some mighty long rallies.
– Dunkley Scales 6 (Koby Grace, Hayden Wilson 2) d Weightmans Packaging 4 (Nick Kiapekos 3, Maria Starikov 1)
TEAM : Weightmans – # 1 – Nick Kiapekos, # 2 – Maria Starikov, # 3 – Gary Leach. Dunkley – # 1 – Koby Grace, # 2 – Hayden Wilson, # 3 – Ildi Healy.
Hayden’s two wins both went to four sets as Gary took the first and forced him out to 16 in another. His encounter with Maria had two sets finishing at 13, as Maria wasn’t prepared to give an inch. But Hayden hung in and collected two Rubbers for Dunkley.
Koby was kept on his toes in the match against Maria, working its way to four sets, with a win to Koby.
The only five set match between these teams was a ripper, between Maria and Ildi. Back and forth, back and forth, went the scorers head, as the rallies mounted and the excitement grew, as Weightmans needed this win, with the score sitting at 2 to 4, Dunkley’s way. Both play a similar style of game and the sets see sawed their way to the fifth, where Maria took the win at 12/10. Well played Ladies !
With Dunkley taking out both Doubles, Weightmans Captain, Nick, rallied to pick up another much needed win. This meant the pressure was on Maria and Hayden, as to which way the victory would fall.
Hayden faced Gary in the first match of the night and was forced to four sets, with Gary grabbing the opening set and forcing him out to 16 in another. But Hayden finished off well to collect Dukley’s first win.
In the match that held more weight, he had the added pressure of encountering Maria. The Brick Wall wasn’t prepared to give an inch and made Hayden work for every point, with two sets going to 13. But it was Hayden who eventually snuck in the winning point to collected the winning Rubber for Dunkley and move them into the Grand Final.
RESULTS : Gary lost to Hayden (11/9, 9/11, 14/16, 2/11), Nick defeated Ildi (11/8, 11/4, 11/3), Maria lost to Koby (8/11, 11/9, 4/11, 4/11). WINNERS : Dunkley Scales 6 to Weightman’s Packaging 4.
GAMES : 23 to 17.
– Mallee Meats 7 (Karly Leach 3, Curtis Crabtree, Jenny Leach 1) d Sammy’s Slammers 4 (Sam Campbell, Deegan Kerslake 2)
TEAMS : Mallee – # 1 Karly Leach, # 2 – Curtis Crabtree, # 3 – Jen Leach. Sammy’s – # 1 Sam Campbell, # 2 – Deegan Kerslake, # 3 – Raylee Waugh (Filling in for Andrew Jefferies).
This was always going to be a tough battle, with both teams having played very well through out the season.
After the first set of Single, Deegan, Karly and Sam amounted valuable wins.
There were two five set matches produced over the night and both included Karly and Sam, with the first coming in the Doubles, when Curtis assisted Mallee and Deegan included his tricky shots for the Slammer’s. The two first sets went the way of Mallee, then the Slammers started doing just that, which landed them the following two. With it coming down to the last the tension got a bit much and Mallee took the control back and brought the Rubbers back to two each.
Karly was pressured in every set, by Deegan, but Mallee Meats Captain wasn’t ready to let this battle go easily and was rewarded for her total focus, finishing the match in three.
Jen then had to prepare herself for Sam’s barrage of top spin slams. It was over quickly and didn’t hurt too much, as Jen was able to amount a couple of respectable sets, but it was always going to go the way of Sam, which once again leveled the ledger.
Curtis was far too strong for Raylee and after pushing Sam to four sets in his first encounter, he was fired up and to much for Raylee, finishing with a comfortable win.
With Mallee one ahead, Sammy’s couldn’t afford to loose the next and Mallee were determined to seize both Doubles. The Daughter and Mother pairing of Karly and Jen, were fully committed and snared the first two sets. Sam and Raylee came back with a terrific third set win, but concentration from the Leach’s got them home.
This meant the Match between Karly and Sam had to go in favor of the Slammers, as the Rubbers were sitting at 5 to 3 Mallee’s way and what an amazing match. The rallies were countless, with some being controlled with placement and others with full on smashes. Both Sam and Karly gave their utmost for their teams. Sam collected the first and third sets and both played to a very high standard, with Karly completing another exceptional night of three Singles wins and being a big part of the two Doubles wins. It was Mallee who would pull in the sixth Rubber and join Dunkley Scales in next weeks Grand Final.
The last two matches were played out, with Deegan and Curtis having a ding dong battle, with Deegan claiming the win in four.
