– Mallee Bearings 6 (Joel Thomas 3, Liam Wood 2) d Tankard Dental 3 (Thanh Nguyen 2, Reece Kurrle 1)

In an abbreviated match with both number three players out Mallee Bearings were never in danger against Tankard Dental as in the first match Bearings number two Liam Wood defeated opposing number one Reece Kurrle in four sets. Kurrle has been in very good form and this victory by Wood was a good scalp.

Wood then partnered Joel Thomas to win the only doubles in straight sets over Kurrle and Thanh Nguyen. Mallee Bearings are now well and truly clear at the head of the ladder while Tankards are in jeopardy of losing the double chance if they lose in the final round.

– Weightmans Packaging 10 (Jackson Tung, Dylan Wood 3, Lee Leeson 2) d Choices Flooring Mildura 1 (Shannon Bowen 1)

Fifth placed Weightmans Packaging made a surge toward the finals with a massive 10-1 victory over the undermanned Choices Flooring Mildura, Weightmans skipper Jackson Tung and teammate Dylan Wood were in fine form both winning three singles in an opposition which included top players Shannon Bowen and Jackson Murphy.

Tung has enjoyed a consistent season and currently sits in third position on the singles aggregate, his victory in straight sets over Bowen was a well-constructed win. To make the finals Weightmans will need to defeat Regional Taxation Services which they have not done in their two meetings to date. They will need to rely on fourth placed Cookes being defeated by second placed Tankard Dental.

– Regional Taxation Services 6 (Andrew Cannard, Rohan Reimers 2, Edi Re 1) d Cookes Pools & Spas 5 (Kate Carmichael 3, Casper McCarthy 1)

Regional Taxation Services belied their position at the bottom of the ladder with their second win in succession this time at the expense of Cookes Pools & Spas 6-5 despite Kate Carmichael winning three singles for Cookes. The very first game of the night was crucial to both teams, and it was RTS number two Rohan Reimers who defeated Casper McCarthy in a five set struggle, there were many excellent rallies and Reimers was able to blunt some strong McCarthy forehands with excellent defence. The spectators witnessed an entertaining contest 7-11 11-9 15-13 4-11 11-8 in Reimers favour. Later Reimers was on the verge of an upset win when he took a two games to one lead over Carmichael before she lifted to take the fourth and fifth games comfortably.

Regional Taxation Services took a 5-3 lead courtesy of Andrew Cannard and Edi Re defeating Kate Carmichael and Russell Walder in five sets 4-11 11-4 11-5 10-12 11-6.

Kate Carmichael then matched up against opposing number one Andrew Cannard and what a topsy turvy match this was. Cannard took absolute control winning the first game 11-4 , he then raced to a 9-2 lead in the second and at this point Carmichael flicked the switch winning the next nine points to steal the game 11-9, she then took the third 11-8, the fourth started like the first and second and in no time Cannard took an 8-2 lead and again Carmichael was able to fight back and amazingly took the fourth and the match 14-12, Cookes were still in the match.

Carmichael’s teammate Casper McCarthy then outlasted the inform Edi Re to win in five sets. The score now was five rubbers all. RTS number two Rohan Reimers then matched up against Russell Walder, Walder played well to take the first, a victory by him would have seen Cookes reach second spot on the ladder, but it wasn’t to be as Reimers proved too steady to win in four and now Cookes could miss out if they cannot defeat Tankard Dental in round 16.

PENNANT TWO:

Despite losing 5-6, Choices Flooring Mildura cannot lose top spot whilst their opponents Mallee Meats have ensured they will play finals with this excellent victory. Cookes Pools & Spas in a strong display have moved to second at the expense of their opponents Weightmans Packaging. In the clash of fifth and sixth and each team a player short, Pinnacle Packers defeated Mallee Bearings 5-4.

The singles aggregate race has been close all year in this pennant however Tom Morrison has made a break and now leads by three from team mate Marcus Cimino, Jason Gifkins and Quentin Clark who all are on 29.  Tom this round filled in in pennant one as a reward for his consistent form and whilst he did not win a match, he took both Dylan Wood and Lee Leeson to five sets. Well done Tom!

– Mallee Meats 6 (Ashley Morrison 3, Rasin Bhuiyan 2) d Choices Flooring Mildura 5 (Jason Gifkins 2, Kevin Johns, Harry Gujral 1)

This was the most exciting match of the round with Mallee Meats securing fourth position on the ladder with one round to play. Choices Flooring Mildura went in to this match as favourites given they are on top of the ladder. Mallee Meats number three David Sergi was out with a leg injury, and he was replaced by Tague Morris.

Skipper of Mallee Meats Ash Morrison was in superb form in this round winning three singles including a 12-10 in the fifth win against the improving Harry Gujral in his first singles. In his second singles Ash this time against Kevin Johns, again had to battle it out in another lengthy five set marathon. Morrison took the first two games and Johns fought back to take a match point in the fifth before Morrison secured the important victory 11-5 11-7 7-11 10-12 13-11.

Later Morrison accounted for Jason Gifkins 12-10 9-11 11-4 11-5. Teammate Rasin Bhuiyan played a key role for his team as well by winning two singles against Harry and Kevin, two very good wins. Maybe the best win was the first doubles when Morrison and Bhuiyan combined to defeat the very strong pair of Gifkins and Johns 15-13 11-6 9-11 13-11 a tough match.

Not only did this secure Mallee Meats the top four position it will also give them the confidence to know they can mix it with the best.

Winners: Mallee Meats 6 defeated Choices Flooring Mildura 5, Games 19 to 21.

– Cookes Pools & Spas 9 (Tom Morrison 3, Marcus Cimino, Josh Arnold 2) d Weightmans Packaging 2 (Brendan Alderton 2)

This was a one-sided affair as Cookes Pools & Spas ran rampant to defeat Weightmans 9-2 and in doing so moved to second position on the ladder exchanging positions with their opponents and gaining the all-important double chance with one round to play.

As mentioned earlier Tom Morrison won three singles in a commanding display while teammates Marcus Cimino and Josh Arnold offered good support winning two singles each.

Weightmans were best served by number two Brendan Alderton who won two singles. He has been in good form winning eight of his last nine singles. His match against Marcus Cimino was a highlight, after dropping the first two games Brendan narrowly took the third and then went on to win 5-11 8-11 13-11 11-8 11-6, a big comeback. Weightmans fill in Therese Fitzpatrick whilst not winning a singles gave it her best, firstly going down to Marcus 10-12 in the fifth another tough five setter, Therese at one stage took a two games to one lead. Later Therese recovered from a 0-2 deficit to just go down in another five-set slog against Josh Arnold.

Despite their indifferent form in losing five of their last eight matches Weightmans can still grab the all-important double chance in the final round however they will need Cookes to lose.

Winners: Cookes Pools & Spas 9 defeated Weightmans Packaging 2. Games 30 to 12

– Pinnacle Packers 5 (Andrew Jones, John Fitzpatrick 2) d Mallee Bearings 4 (Sony Sefer, Therese Fitzpatrick 2)

With both their number one players out Packers Peter Midgley and Bearings Jamie Kealley respectively this match was reduced to a two versus two affair due to a lack of fill ins. In the end it was the one and only doubles which would sort the winner and loser.

The Packers pair of Andrew Jones and John Fitzpatrick won the first game easily against opponents Sony Sefer and Therese Fitzpatrick. From here the match tightened up and the Packers just grabbed the second 11-9, then Sony and Therese took the third 11-8 before Andrew and John won the fourth and the match 11-9, an important win enabling them to bank the win.

This took the Packers to a 3-0 lead and the four points enabling the Packers to lift themselves from the bottom of the ladder exchanging positions with their opponents.

Mallee Bearings then improved the score line with Sony Sefer outpointing Andrew Jones in straight sets. The singles of the match then took place and what an entertaining contest this was to be.

Siblings John and Therese Fitzpatrick took to the table and on form John was expected to record a victory and when he took a two games to love lead it looked like he would take the points, enter Therese and in a tremendous fightback containing many long hard fought rallies it was Therese who turned the match around impressively to win 9-11 4-11 11-7 11-5 11-7 leaving John a battle on his hands to make the top eight to qualify for the Super 8’s in the final round.

Winners: Pinnacle Packers 5 defeated Mallee Bearings 4 Games: 17 to 14.

PENNANT THREE:

It is a tight ladder to see who will be in Super 8’s. It has definitely been competitive between the top nine players. Particularly between Marita Grace, Nick Kiapekos, Nhat Dat and Samantha Campbell. Sam really pushing to be the only player three in the Super 8’s above some player twos and the other player threes. For her first season, can she do it and get into the Super 8’s for the first time? It all comes down to round 16. Good luck Sam and others. You all have got this.

Regional Taxation Services had the bye this week but Sam Campbell wasn’t allowed to rest, filling in for Weightmans Packaging, Ryan Peterson.

Teams are taking hits this round with a shocking loss by Weightmans Packaging to Sammy’s Slammers 3-8 and Mallee Meats losing to Exposed Signage/Apparel 3-8 also.

Nhat Dat Proved that last week in Pennant two was vital to his play this week. Showing up and knocking them all down, he wins his three singles alongside team captain James Jarvis, who also won all his singles.

– Exposed Signage/Apparel 8 (Marita Grace, Nick Kiapekos 3, Wendy Simpson 1) d Mallee Meats 3 (Dave Tanner, Hamish Smyth 1)

The two teams were ready to in the first doubles match with Exposed Marita Grace and Nick Kiapekos facing Mallee Meats Dave Tanner and Hamish Smyth but neither knew of what was in store for them. The teams made it to five sets with some quick rallies and great placement chasing players as they tried to get out of the way so their teammates can return the ball. Games 3 to 2 Exposed Signage/Apparel 11-7, 10-12, 10-12, 11-8, 11-3.

In the second round of doubles, Marita Grace, accompanied by teammate Wendy Simpson, took on Dave Tanner and Glenn Leeson, again taking each other to five sets. With Exposed up by two sets winning both 11-4, Glenn and Dave made their moves carefully, focussing on just getting them on the table. It was a close third set but Mallee Meats were able to get themselves on the scoreboard 12-10, shaking up Marita’s and Wendy’s confidence until they fold, losing to Mallee Meats in the final two sets 11-6 and 11-4. Another great comeback by pennant three. Well done.

Dave Tanner bouncing back from last week where he lost 3-0 to Nick Kiapekos, he takes Nick to five sets but not quite getting the rubber. Still an accomplishment none the less. Great effort Dave. 11-8, 2-11, 3-11, 11-9, 7-11.

Wendy Simpson scared Dave a little bit when they got to ten points each in the first set. Some long rallies were shared but Dave was quick to end the match earning the next two points and winning 12-10. Great job to Wendy Simpson. Your hard work and training are definitely paying off and improvements are clearly visible. Well done.

To end the night for Exposed Signage/Apparel and Mallee Meats, Glenn Leeson has a crack at Wendy’s new skills. Falling short, Wendy wins the first two sets, but all is not yet lost. Glenn takes his time with every shot and every serve throwing Wendy off track and winning the third set. Wendy noticed Glenn’s game change and adapted her own to take him down winning the fourth and final set. 11-9, 11-5, 5-11, 11-5.

WINNER: Exposed Signage/Apparel 8 d Mallee Meats 3 Games: 27 to 14

– Sammy’s Slammers 8 (James Jarvis, Nhat Dat 3) d Weightmans Packaging 3 (Karly Leach, Sam Campbell. Koby Grace 1)

James Jarvis coming in hot once again knocking out his opponents, claiming his points for his team. Still undefeated, he wins his three singles increasing his lead on Ryan Peterson. With Ryan out this round, James was sad he couldn’t have the face off he was waiting for.

Karly Leach and Hayden Wilson head to five sets with some fun rallies, Karly enjoying herself as she makes Hayden run from side to side of the table. Hayden not giving up, he returns several shots until he accidently sets one up for Karly to whack the ball at him.

Karly and Nhat Dat had a fantastic first set. The two players knew their opponent’s skills and exploited their weaknesses, causing some great set ups and shots. Karly and Nhat left their audience in anticipation to find out who was going to win this match as they kept going back and forth serving and getting points, it was clear it was anyone’s game. A great set by the two, Nhat winning 19-17. Following games, 11-6, 7-11, 11-4, Nhat taking the rubber 3-1 sets.

In a surprising twist Hayden Wilson also played well against Samantha Campbell winning the first two sets. Sam, feeling the pressure and getting a little discouraged and concerned on why Hayden is beating her, she holds on and proved that she is one unpredictable cookie, coming back and winning the next three sets, taking the win for her team. A great comeback by Sam, well done. 9-11, 8-11, 15-13, 11-6, 11-5.

To end the night, Sam Campbell wanted to have a shot at Nhat Dat as well. She enjoyed umpiring him and Karly play and wanted some of that action to herself. Lucky for her, she had an audience, including a couple of pennant one players who watched closely and gave great encouragement as they clapped after a great point. Sam knew that the pressure was

on despite Sammy’s Slammers already winning. She realised that night, that she absolutely loves being put under pressure by having an audience of people she looks up to in skill levels, and enjoys all the feedback she receives, even if it may be quite repetitive at times.

PENNANT FOUR:

Here we are with only one round to go before the Finals and Dunkley Scales can’t be knocked off, the top rung, with a super run of wins. With the consistency of their number one and two players, their team has been almost impossible to beat. The 2nd and 3rd teams, Mallee Meats and Weightmans Packaging have been swapping positions throughout the season, with Weightmans having a slow start to the season, but firing up when it mattered. Tankard Dental has struggled, with many of their rounds needing fill in’s, which hasn’t helped their cause.

– Dunkley Scales 7 (Deegan Kerslake 3, Tom Gilmour 2) d Tankard Dental 4 (Nathan Beard 2, Derek Hung, Conner Burnett 1)

The first match was one Tom Gilmore would rather forget, as he came up against a Red Hot Nathan Beard, who put together a commanding game, which was too much for Tom to deal with this week (15/13, 11/6, 11/7). Tankard’s Connor Burnett has some great shots in his arsenal, but it wasn’t enough to knock over the tricky Deegan Kerslake (11/5, 11/4, 13/11). Dunkley’s Selma Mayne wasn’t available, so Andrew Jefferies filled her spot, but he took a trouncing from Derek Hung, to add a second Rubber for Tankard (11/3, 11/2, 11/0).

Derek and Nathan were facing up to Tom and Deegan in the first Doubles, which, Dunkley Scales made look easy, in the finish (11/7, 11/1, 11/2).

Tom got his first win for the night, when he played Connor, which nudged Dunkley one ahead (11/2, 11/4, 11/4). Andrew found Nathan’s never say die game, a little too much to deal with and once again, the scores were back to even (11/4 ,11/3, 11/2). Deegan and Derek wrangled it out for four sets, with Deegan getting the upper hand (11/7, 11/6, 8/11, 11/5).

Tom and Andrew paired up in the Second Doubles and Derek and Connor gave it their best, but Dunkley snavelled the win (11/5, 11/8, 11/9).

In the five set match between Connor and Andrew, the rallies were flowing and with Connors ever changing grip, he was able to maneuver his way to a win (8/11, 11/9, 13/11, 7/11, 11/7). With two matches to go, Tankard would need to win both to be victorious. Tom and Derek have come up against each other many times over the past season, but with Tom now determined to get the win for his team, he used his cunning to add that one win, which would give Dunkley yet another victory (11/7, 11/3, 11/9). Nathen and Deegan played out the final match, and although Nathan put in a last ditch effort in the 3rd set, Deegan left with the team win and three individual wins for himself.

WINNER : Dunkley Scales 7 to Tankard Dental 4. GAMES : 23 to 13.

– Mallee Meats 6 (Maria Starikov 3, Jenny Leach 2) d Weightmans Packaging 5 (Raj Gujral 2, Gary Leach, Curtis Crabtree 1)

First to the Table were Mr and Mrs Leach, in the friendly Clash between. With Gary sneaking the last win between the pair, Jen was focused and hoping to turn the tables. Yes, she pulled of the win, but it was a soft win, as Gary was suffering with a bad back (11/4, 11/8, 11/5). Raj Gujral’s game has progressed in leaps and bounds through the season and he now has a very solid game, which was far too strong for Mallee Meats Jake Hines (11/8, 11/9, 13/11). Weightman’s Curtis Crabtree played a terrific match against Maria Starakov, winning the first two sets well. But as Maria does, she dug in the heels and put together an amazing come back to mark up a second Rubber for Mallee (8/11, 7/11, 11/8, 11/5, 11/9).

The first Doubles saw Curtis and Gary playing Maria and Jen, with some excellent shot making from both sides. The Mallee pair completed the match in four sets, with a win (11/8, 7/11, 11/9, 13/11).

Raj’s crafty game was to complex for Jen, and although she snuck a set, Raj finished off the match in quick smart time (11/7, 11/2, 8/11, 11/3). Maria added another Rubber for Mallee, with her match against Gary (11/4, 11/4, 11/8). Jake threw a few tricky shots at Curtis, but overall, Curtis was the dominant player and he pulled the scores back to a 4 to 3 battle (11/6, 11/5, 11/2).

The last Doubles match went to four sets, which was contested between the pair of Curtis and Raj and Maria and Jake. The Spin, Chop, Slice and Cut from the Weightmans pair, put a holt to Maria and Jake’s game and enabled Weithman’s to draw level with Mallee (7/11, 11/3, 11/9, 11/5). As strong as Raj’s game has become, Maria pulled out her lightening fast reflexes and her defense wall, to make it three individual wins once again (11/3, 11/5, 11/7). Curtis has an array of shots, which has always made it a difficult task for Jen, but the determination for her team to collect a win, gave her the focus needed to, for the first time, leave with the win over Curtis, after a see sawing five sets (11/9, 8/10, 10/12, 11/9, 11/9). This win gave Mallee the overall win, but Gary and Jake were still to play. In a tough match, Gary held tight to pull in a win for Weightman’s (14/12, 11/9, 11/8).
