Weightman’s Packaging: 7 Josh Arnold (3), Duy Truong (2), James Jarvis (1) def Mallee Meats: 4 John Fitzpatrick (2), Mark Cleary (1), Beh Hwak (0).

Weightmans Packaging scored a much-contested 7-4 win over Mallee Meats in round 3. Duy Truong, who had previously subbed in for Mallee Meats in round 2, now filled in as Weightman’s number 2.  Newcomer Beh Hwak filled in on Meat’s side in the absence of their  number 3 Riley Clemence.

Match 1 paired up Truong against Cleary, with Truong taking the first two sets 11-5, 11-7, Cleary snatching the third 5-11, but succumbing to his opponent 11-7 in the fourth. Arnold then swiftly dispatched Hwak 11-2, 11-7, 11-3. Meat’s captain Fitzpatrick then responded with a win over opposite number 3 Jarvis, winning in three, 11-8, 11-9, 11-7.

The first doubles of the night was a hot contest; Weightman’s duo Arnold and Truong took the first set 11-9, Meat’s Fitzpatrick and Cleary snagging the second 11-8, Weightman’s then fighting back, taking the third 11-9. But Meats stayed strong, taking the fourth and fifth to secure the win, 11-8, 11-4. The next match saw skipper Arnold grapple with number 2 Cleary. Cleary won the first 9-11, but Arnold stabbed back, taking the second and third 11-8, 11-5. Cleary held his ground, taking the fourth 11-8 but couldn’t quite get over the line in the fifth, losing 11-5.

Fitzpatrick then took on Truong and after a ripper of a four-setter, took the win 15-13, 11-8, 4-11, 11-8. The seventh rubber of the night then pitted Jarvis against Hwak, who made a commendable effort against the more experienced Jarvis, but lost in three, 11-2, 11-7, 11-5.

Weightmans comfortably took the night’s second doubles match in three; 11-7, 11-3, 11-8. With the score now 5-3 in Weightman’s favour, Meats really needed to make a comeback, but the next rubber would scupper their chances for good. In the battle of the number 1’s, Arnold won the first and second sets, 11-8, 11-9. Fitzpatrick then regrouped and seized the next two 11-7, 11-5 bringing the match score to two sets all. Fitzpatrick fought hard but Arnold prevailed in the end, taking the win in the fifth 11-7, winning the night for his team 6-3. Team-mate Jarvis then squared off against Cleary but went down in three 11-8, 11-3, 11-1. In the final rubber, Truong then cleaned up a seventh rubber for his side, defeating Hwak 11-2, 11-2, 11-2.

Final score 7 rubbers to 4 and 24 games to 17.

Cookes Pools & Spas: 6 Ashley Morrison (3), David Sergi (2), Nhat Dhat (0) def Pinnacle Packers: 5 Rasin Bhuiyan (2), Ryan Peterson (1), Therese Fitzpatrick (1).

An oh-so-close win for Cookes over Pinnacle Packers in round 3 which featured Packers number 3 Therese Fitzpatrick take Cookes captain Ash Morrison to five sets, which had she won, may well have tipped the night in her team’s favor.

First up, Peterson soundly beat Dhat in straight sets, 11-6, 11-6, 11-7. Then came the big one; Morrison versus Fitzpatrick. Fitzpatrick started slow, losing the first set 4-11, then finding her groove and taking the next two sets 12-10, 11-9. Morrison however, was having none of it, and won the last two sets 11-7, 11-9. A strong effort from Fitzpatrick, but unfortunately didn’t pay off. Packer’s captain Bhuiyan then got his team’s second win by beating Sergi in straight sets, 12-10, 11-2, 11-5.

The night’s first doubles pitted Morrison and Sergi against Bhuiyan and Peterson in a tightly contested match. The Packers duo won the first two set with no real trouble, 11-9, 11-7. But then Cookes swooped in to take the third, a whopping 11-2. They continued their comeback in the fourth, narrowly winning 12-10, but failed to seal the deal in the fifth, losing by a hair 13-11. Packers were now halfway to a win, but Morrison halted their progress, solidifying his side’s second rubber, beating Peterson 11-9, 14-12, 11-7. Bhuiyan then comfortably dispatched Dhat in straight sets 11-4, 11-7, 11-3. Sergi aided his captain’s efforts by defeating Fitzpatrick, also in three, 11-7, 12-10, 11-8.

Cookes then levelled the game score 4-4 with their win in the second doubles; Morrison and Dhat vs Bhuiyan and Fitzpatrick. The Cookes pair proved too strong for Packers and took the win 11-9, 12-10, 11-8. Captain Morrison did not allow Packers any space to breath, taking out Bhuiyan in three sets, 11-9, 11-6, 11-9. Now just one rubber away from winning,

Sergi faced off against Peterson, and although Peterson was able to steal the second set from him, Sergi emerged victorious 11-5, 7-11, 11-7, 11-8. Fitzpatrick then took her only singles win for the night, defeating Dhat 11-7, 11-7, 11-9.

Final score 6 rubbers to 5 and 19 games to 19.

PENNANT THREE:

Round three produced many exciting matches and saw a few changes to the Ladder positions. There was a need for four fill in’s for P3 on Wednesday, which makes it difficult for Gav and his grading team. Four talented players came away winning their three individual Singles and for Karly Leach she has used her skills to notch up her third week in a row. There were very few five set matches in Pennant three this week and in fact the Mallee Meats and Weightmans Packaging tussle, had none.

– Exposed Signage/Apparel 7 (Ted Cleary, Steve Parker 3) d Regional Taxation Services 4 (Tom Gilmour, Wendy Simpson, Nathan Beard 1)

Mentioning five setters, the first match proved to be just that, which was between Nathan and Steve Parker. For a number three to take a number one to five sets, that, is pretty impressive and although Steve came away with the win, Nathan gave him a good run for his money (10/12, 11/9, 5/11, 11/2, 11/6). Bev Metcalf (filling in for Connor) had to face up to the tricky Tom, which is always a difficult task. Tom didn’t mess around, finishing up in three (11/6, 11/5, 11/1).

The fill in for Steve Pongrac was Wendy Simpson and little Ted didn’t take his foot off the pedal, pushing her to five sets, before stealing the Rubber (11/5, 11/9, 9/11, 17/19, 11/5).

Tom and Nathan then took on Steve and Ted in the first Doubles, with another Rubber falling to Exposed (11/8, 7/11, 11/7, 16/14).

Steve didn’t have any trouble working out Tom’s game and made short work of their match. Ted just seems to be a natural when it comes to his Table Tennis skills and Nathan did take a set from him, but the match went to Ted, putting Exposed only one away from an overall win. Wendy found it easy going against Bev, giving Regional a little hope (11/1, 11/1, 11/1).

The final doubles kept Regional in the game, with Tom and Wendy pinching another Rubber when up against Ted and Bev in a quick three sets (11/4, 11/2, 11/8).

Ted put another notch on his belt, snatching his third Singles win in his match against Tom and bringing up the sixth Rubber for Exposed (11/5, 11/9, 11/5). Steve pulled out another winner, which also marked up 3 individual Singles for him, in his three setter against Wendy (11/6, 11/8, 11/5). Bev did a great job putting her hand up to fill in, but her matches were all pretty tough and this was another where the luck didn’t fall her way, with Nathan grabbing his first win (11/2, 11/1, 11/2).

WINNER : Exposed Signage / Apparel 7 to Regional Taxation 4.

GAMES : 21 to 18.

– Mallee Meats 7 (Karly Leach 3, Curtis Crabtree, Jenny Leach 1) d Weightmans Packaging 4 (Nick Kiapekos, Maria Starikov 2)

In four sets of rallies Jen took on Maria, knowing she would have to break through the Starikov wall of defense. Her best wasn’t quite enough, with Maria only relinquishing one set, to walk away with Weightmans first Rubber (11/6, 5/11, 11/6, 11/3). Karly was the clear winner in a very quick three sets, when she faced Raylee Waugh (fill in for Gary) (11/4, 11/0, 11/2).

Curtis and Nick were next to fight it out, with the two throwing in some incredible shots, with the Net and tables edge coming into play a lot. Nick’s experience won him the match in four sets (11/3, 6/11, 11/8, 11/7).

Nick and Maria took Karly and Curtis to four sets with Mallee triumphant in the first Doubles (11/9, 11/5, 9/11, 11/7).

Karly and Maria fought out a great match, with Maria sneaking the first set, but unable to counter Karly’s returns (9/11, 11/8, 11/9, 11/6). Jen was out played in her match against Nick, with too many shots going straight through to the keeper (11/6, 11/4, 11/3). Raylee played a fine game against Curtis, with one set going to 14, but in the end she was knocked over in three (11/9, 14/12, 11/9).

The Mother and Daughter combination of Karly and Jen were now drawn to face Nick and Raylee in the last Doubles. Everything just happened to fall in favor of the Leach’s with a three set win (11/7, 11/6, 11/2).

With Mallee now sitting on five Rubbers, to three, Weightmans would need to pocket all the remaining matches to take the win. Karly put the pressure on Nick in their match giving Mallee the Rubber they needed to secure the night, with a superb night out, she also won her three singles and both Doubles (11/3, 11/8, 11/8). Weightman’s did add another Rubber to their total, with Curtis falling short in his game against Maria (11/7, 16/14, 11/8). The last match for the night was between Jen and Raylee, with the four sets bringing out some determination from both and the win going to Jen (11/7, 6/11, 11/8, 18/16).

WINNERS : Mallee Meats 7 to Weightmans Packaging 4.

GAMES : 23 to 15.

– Sammy’s Slammers 6 (Sam Campbell 3, Deegan Kerslake 2) d Dunkley Scales 5 (Hayden Wilson 2. Koby Grace, Ildi Healy 1)

This contest was a little closer than the past two and the first up were Ildi and Deegan, with the pace to much for Ildi to handle and Deegan collecting the first Rubber for Sammy’s (11/7, 11/2, 11/5). Koby evened things up with his three set win over Andrew (11/5, 11/0, 11/9). Hayden fell to Sam in a four set contest, with Sam bringing out the big guns (11/8, 8/11, 11/7, 11/4).

Koby and Hayden fought hard to stay in the game in the first Doubles against Sam and Deegan, with a see sawing match going Sammy’s way after five sets (9/11, 11/6, 4/11, 11/7, 15/13).

It would have been thought Koby and Deegan’s match would be a close contest, but to the contrary Deegan extracted some amazing shots to halt Koby in three (11/7, 11/6, 11/6). Sam followed suit, when she played Ildi, also winding it up in three sets, although Ildi did challenge Sam in a couple of sets (11/9, 11/4, 11/9). Hayden gave his team some breathing space, snatching the win against Andrew (11/3, 11/7, 11/6).

The Rubbers now sat at five to one, Sammy’s way, which required Dunkley to round up all remaining matches to stay in the contest. With Sam and Andrew giving it all they had, Koby and Ildi were able to capture the match to keep them in the hunt (11/8, 11/7, 8/11, 11/5).

The two Captains came up against one another in the next match, in a fierce struggle to seize the Rubber. Sam was determined the winner, after four sets, which gave her team the overall win and landed her with three individual wins (7/11, 14/12, 11/4, 11/3). Hayden and Deegan had super match, with the first two sets convincingly falling Hayden way, then the tables turned and Deegan pulled himself together to take the following two. In an exciting last set, Hayden succeeded in capturing another Rubber for Dunkley (11/6, 11/6, 5/11, 5/11, 11/9).

Ildi and Andrew made the most of their last games, with a fair dinkum three set encounter, which in the end made the score respectable for Dunkley (11/8, 16/14, 11/7).

WINNER : Sammy’s Slammers 6 to Dunkley Scales 5.
