Maccas Player of the round: Mark Dorman

– Regional Taxation Services 6 (Mark Dorman 3, Paul Kealley 2) d Choices Flooring Mildura 5 (Jackson Tung 2, Liam Wood, Ashley Morrison 1)

Victory for RTS came on the back of the excellent form of skipper Mark Dorman who won three singles for the second round in succession. The veteran was in superb form accounting for singles aggregate leader, the inform Jackson Tung in an outstanding five set match which went to the wire, four of the five games decided by a margin of two points. In this match there were some outstanding rallies as Dorman turned back the clock taking the points 14-12 4-11 11-9 9-11 11-9.

Preceding this singles thriller, Dorman teamed up with Quentin Clark in another important win taking the second doubles in four sets against Tung and Ashley Morrison.

It was a real team effort to take the four points as Dorman’s remaining teammate Paul Kealley won two singles and went oh so close to defeating Jackson Tung in straight sets. In an amazing recovery Tung saved several match points to defeat Kealley 6-11 7-11 16-14 13-11 11-6 a top-class match.

– Cookes Pools & Spas 6 (Paul Kealley 3, Russell Walder 2, Jason Gifkins 1) d Mallee Bearings 5 (Kate Carmichael 2, Lee Leeson 1)

Cookes Pools & Spas with a 6-5 victory over Mallee Bearings have joined ladder leader Choices Flooring Mildura on a five-win two loss ratio at the head of the ladder. Paul Kealley came into the Cookes team to replace the absent Arhuang Lau and it was Kealley who proved to be the star winning three singles including a straight sets defeat of opposing number one Kate Carmichael. Kealley has an explosive game and was on the attack regularly in this very good win.

Kealley’s temporary teammates Russell Walder and Jason Gifkins made it an excellent team effort for Cookes by winning two and one singles respectively.

Both Walder and Gifkins fought back from 0-2 games deficit against the unlucky Tom Morrison to win in five sets in which were very important comebacks.

– Weightmans Packaging 6 (Jamie Kealley, Rohan Reimers 2) d Tankard Dental 5 (Reece Kurrle 3, Thanh Nguyen, Ed Hung 1)

Weightmans Packaging 7 Rasin Bhuiyan (3), Michael Tan (3), Steve Parker (1) defeated Pinnacle Packers 4 Josh Arnold (1), James Jarvis (1), Ryan Hensgen (0).

Pinnacle Packers took a beating in round 7 against a stalwart Weightmans Packaging. Despite winning both doubles matches, captain Arnold and co. could only scrape together two singles wins between them.

The ever-reliable Tan was up first against Hensgen, taking the game in four sets after losing the first 10-12, 12-10, 11-8, 11-3. Next, Arnold obtained his sole win for the evening, defeating Parker 11-6, 11-7, 10-12, 11-6 while Jarvis battled it out against Bhuiyan with the latter taking the win 8-11, 11-6, 11-7, 11-6. Packers then pushed back against Weightmans with a win in the first doubles, 11-8, 11-7, 11-9, evening the score 2-2.

The next few rubbers saw Weightmans step up their attack on Packers. In the Tan versus Arnold match, Tan took the first set 11-5, Arnold fought back and won the second 11-6, but Tan held the line and won 11-6, 12-10. Keeping the momentum going Bhuiyan then cut down Hensgan in three sets 11-6, 11-6, 11-8, leading into the next match which pitted Jarvis against Parker. Jarvis came in swinging, winning the first two 11-4, 11-9, Parker clawed his way back by winning the third and fourth 12-10, 11-7 but Jarvis brought it home in the end, winning 11-9. Packers then doubled down and took the second doubles as well after a tight battle, 7-11, 15-13, 11-6, 11-5, catching up to Weightmans on the scoreboard at 4 rubbers apiece.

Coming into the final three rubbers, Packers were hopeful they could take home the win, but Weightmans wouldn’t let it go that easily and won the next three singles in a row.

Bhuiyan defeated Arnold after a brief three set tussle 4-11, 13-11, 11-6 whilst Jarvis faced off against Tan. Jarvis had the job of keeping Tan from obtaining the winning sixth rubber, and he had him on the ropes for a moment, but Tan proved too strong, winning 11-7, 9-11, 11-7, 6-11, 11-6. With the win in the bag, Parker marked down one more rubber for his team by besting Hensgen 11-4, 7-11, 12-10, 11-8.

Final score 7 rubbers to 4 and 25 games to 18.

Cookes Pools & Spas 6 Duy Truong (2), David Sergi (1), Deegan Kerslake (1) defeated Mallee Meats 5 Harry Gujral (3), Therese Fitzpatrick (2), Nhat Dat (0).

Cookes were looking to knock Mallee Meats out of second place on the ladder by defeating them in a tight 6-5 battle. Meats skipper Gujral got his three singles wins and No. 2 Fitzpatrick took out two, but Cookes were able to get over the line first, winning four singles and both doubles matches.

In the opening match Fitzpatrick got the first rubber by defeating Kerslake 11-9, 11-8, 7-11, 11-4 while Truong took down Dat with little trouble 11-6, 11-4, 11-6. Sergi then attempted to catch a big fish in Gujral but came up short 13-15, 3-11, 12-10, 5-11. The first doubles match was another tense four-setter with Cookes taking the win 12-10, 11-7, 11-13, 13-11, the score now 4 apiece.

The next matchup was the big one: Truong versus Fitzpatrick. Truong showed no mercy, winning the first two sets 11-4, 11-9, but Fitzpatrick was never going to go down that easy and she took the next two 11-8, 13-11. She looked poised to win but seemingly ran out of puff in the fifth, going down 5-11. Meats need to win that rubber, but they soldiered on with Gujral besting Kerslake in three sets 11-8, 11-6, 11-5. Sergi then took out his only singles win for the night against Dat 7-11, 13-11, 11-9, 11-7, then his two teammates got them two rubbers ahead at 5-3 by taking the second doubles, defeating the Gujral/Dat duo 11-7, 11-3, 11-6.

Meats would have to win the last three rubbers if they were going to win the night, so they set to work. Gujral thrashed it out against Truong, narrowly losing the first 12-14, but then outplaying his opponent in the last three 11-6, 13-11, 11-6. Fitzpatrick continued the counterattack, steadily beating Sergi 11-3, 11-5, 11-4. That put the score at 5-5, pitting Kerslake against Dat in the tiebreaker.

In the end, Kerslake proved too good for Dat who went down in straight sets 7-11, 8-11, 4-11.

Final score 6 rubbers to 5 and 21 games to 19.

Maccas Player of the round: Steve Pongrac

– Sammy’s Slammers 7 (Sam Campbell 3, Koby Grace 2, Dianne Hannig 1) d Regional Taxation Services 4 (Karly Leach 2, Jackson Solimo 1)

In an excellent team effort, the Sammy’s Slammers trio of Sam Campbell, Koby Grace and fill in Dianne Hannig won three, two and one singles respectively in their 7-4 win over Regional Taxation Services who battled hard.

Coming in to this match the Slammers were one win clear of their opponents and despite the loss Regional Taxation Services have retained second position on the ladder by a narrow percentage.

By winning three singles Sam has now opened up a four-win break on the singles aggregate ahead of the second placed Karly Leach – girl power. It now will be hard for anyone to catch Sam who has enjoyed a very good season. Her one and only loss this season came in a straight sets loss in round four to her opponent this round, Karly Leach.

Their match this round went to four sets, contained some great rallies but this time around Sam played well to win 11-6 6-11 11-8 11-9.

Despite playing with a small fracture in his foot Sam’s teammate Koby Grace bounced back to form winning two singles. After starting the season on fire winning 7 of 9 singles in the first three rounds, Koby had two quiet weeks and then missed last round. His form will be encouraging with the finals only three weeks away.

Sam and Koby capped off a good night by teaming together in the first doubles to defeat Karly and Leo Parker 12-10 9-11 11-4 11-9 a close struggle.

With Leanne Wilson still unavailable due to an elbow,

Dianne Hannig came in as a fill in and played well to win a singles. Thanks Dianne!!  Normally Raj Gujral has been subbing for Leanne however he injured himself at cricket. Wishing you a speedy recovery Raj and Leanne!

As stated previously RTS despite the loss have retained second place on the ladder. Karly Leach won two singles to retain second place on the singles aggregate. With number three Cooper Kalms out fill in Jackson Solimo came in to the team playing his first match in the STTA and he looks to be a star of the future. He managed to score a solid straight sets win over the experienced Dianne Hannig and Jackson also teamed up with Karly to defeat Sam and Dianne in the second doubles in a great five set tussle winning 11-2 7-11 11-9 11-13 11-7. Welcome Jackson.

Games:  24 to 16

– Exposed Signage/Apparel 7 (Steve Pongrac 3, Nick Kiapekos 2, Curtis Crabtree 1) d Mallee Meats 4 (Rodney Galvin, Jackson Solimo, Hayden Wilson 1)

With Sabrina Fitzpatrick and Brenden Johnson out of the Mallee Meats team and replaced by Rod Galvin and Jackson Solimo, who was busy in his debut playing two matches.

Despite the changes to the team Mallee Meats were quick out of the blocks winning the first two matches both in lengthy five setters. Firstly, it was an impressive victory by Hayden Wilson over the experienced Nick Kiapekos an amazing scoreline of 14-12 6-11 13-15 14-12 11-7 a good comeback by Hayden and then Rod Galvin had to fight off the plucky Curtis Crabtree, Rod taking the match 4-11 11-7 11-6 9-11 11-3.

These two losses sparked Exposed Signage/Apparel into action. Sensing his team were in trouble and could not afford another loss skipper Steve Pongrac proved too consistent for first gamer Jackson Solimo who tried very hard and has an impressive style. Following this match Steve teamed up with Nick to score a four-set win over Rod and Jackson to level the match at two rubbers all.

Nick and Steve then won the next two singles defeating Rod and Hayden respectively to go to a 4-2 lead respectively.

Mallee Meats then bounced back to win the next singles courtesy of an impressive four set win by Jackson over Curtis 11-7 12-10 6-11 11-7.

The Meats pair of Rod and Hayden then levelled the contest at four rubbers all when they accounted for Nick and Curtis in straight sets. Exposed captain Steve then gave his team the lead when he defeated Rod in straight sets.

In an exciting climax in the battle for the four points Exposed number two Nick outlasted the debutant Jackson in a five-set slog 11-3 5-11 11-6 7-11 12-10, a great battle.

In the final singles teammates witnessed Curtis outlast Meats number three Hayden in a further five set thriller, Curtis taking the points 12-10 11-7 6-11 9-11 11-8.

After the second doubles the score line stood at 4 rubbers all, in a strong finish Exposed Signage/Apparel had won the final three rubbers to win 7-4 although the final two rubbers could have gone either way. The match finished as it started with two five setters indicating how close it was.

For the Exposed combination it had been a real team effort with Steve winning three singles while teammates Nick and Curtis had won two and one respectively.

– Dunkley Scales 6 (Glenn Leeson 2, Jenny Leach, Jakob Grzan 1) d Weightmans Packaging 5 (Eddy Parker 3, Tom Gilmour 2)

Dunkley – Glenn Leeson, Jenny Leach and Jakob Grzan. Weightman’s – Tom Gilmour, Eddy Parker and Laim Milton.

Dunkley Scales, who were sitting number one, faced third placed Weightman’s, with the Match ending up a very close affair, requiring 5, five setters and 4, four setters.

The opening group of Singles saw Jakob sneak the first set, before Eddie pulled in the reins, to close it out in four sets. The match was filled with lengthy rallies, with only one sets where Eddy had total control. (8/11, 11/9, 11/3, 11/9).

Glenn zipped through the first set with ease, in the next match, but Liam made him work for his win in the next two. (11/3, 11/9, 11/7).

Jenny and Tom had a thrilling match, which was pushed to the five set limit. The pressure was on Jen in the first game, only making 3 points, with the following, going to 14, in Tom’s favor, leaving Jen having to find a way to take the next three. She did her darndest, but Tom eventually wore her down, to give Weightman’s their second Rubber. (11/3, 14/12, 9/11, 8/11, 11/5).

The Doubles saw Glenn and Jen battling it out against Tom and Eddy, which was always going to be a good contest. There was spin, there was placement and there were tricky serves, with the Dunkley pair just scrapping in for a Rubber to even things up. (7/11, 11/5, 11/7, 7/11, 13/11).

Weightman’s gathered the next couple of Rubbers, with Eddy showing his ever improving game and a lot of determination, getting the better of Glenn after four sets.  (12/10, 11/6, 6/11, 11/8).

Jakob gave it his best, playing some very fine forehand’s, against Tom, who was  far too strong, not allowing young Jakob to advance (11/2, 11/5, 11/6).

With Dunkley requiring a quick fight back, Jen had to pull on her focus mask to give her team a fighting chance. Laim was no walk over, as he has added an extra level to his game, which allowed him to snare the third set to push the match to four. In the end, Jen was able to get the job done. (11/4, 11/6, 8/11, 11/3).

Weightman one up, with the last Doubles about to commence. Glenn and Jakob made a valiant attempt in the first two games, but were out played by Tom and Liam. With some excellent team play, Dunkley were able to push forward and capture the last three to bring both teams to four Rubbers. (11/13, 9/11, 11/7, 11/9, 11/9).

It was another five setter when the two number one’s headed to the table. These two throw down plenty of challenging shots, so it was a great match to watch, with the initial game being written up for Glenn, to then have Tom creep up and grab the next two. It was a tough fight back, but Glenn eventually walked away with the win. (11/9, 9/11, 2/11, 11/9, 11/7).

It looked like Jen was good to bring it home for Dunkley, winning the first game comfortably, but Eddy had other idea’s. I think he was driving an old VW in the first game, but slipped out and purchased a Lamborghini to get to the finish in style. (6/11, 11/7, 11/6, 11/5).

Who would get the Chocolates now, with the Rubbers sitting even on five each, it was up to the number three players to bring home the decision ?

Jakob and Liam wrestled it out, both determined to collect the win for their team. Jakob fought well, but Liam held his nerve and took the first game. The next three games were won quite easily, with Jakob picking up two and Liam one. The pressure was on and it was Dunkley who left with the win, after Jakob finished strong, for the last Rubber. (9/11, 11/4, 3/11, 11/1, 11/5).

GAMES : 24  to  23.

Mallee Meats 7 (Yen Hwak 3, Conner Burnett, Nathan Beard 1) d Tankard Dental 4 (Maria Starikov, Ildi Healy 2)

Mallee – Yen Hwak, Nathan Beard and Conner Burnett. Tankard – Maria Starikov, Ildi Healy and Andrew Jeffries.

This encounter was played a lot quicker, with only one match going to five sets. Things were pretty even through the first half, but with Mallee winning both Doubles, it certainly put the weight onto Tankards shoulders.

Ildi and Nathan usually go the distance in their matches, but this time Ildi took control and wound it up in three sets. (11/4, 11/6, 11/9).

Andrew put up a great fight against Yen, keeping him on his toes, but once again, finding a way around his super fast back hand flick, was too much, with Yen giving Mallee their first Rubber. (11/9, 11/6, 11/7).

Conner was feeling the stress of Maria’s shots in their first game. He made up a little ground in the next two, but not enough to grab the win. (11/1, 11/6, 11/7).

Mallee needed the Doubles to even the ledger and Maria and Ildi gave it a red hot go in the first game, but Yen and Nathan didn’t leave any doors open and blitzed them in the next two (11/9, 11/2, 11/0).

Yen has a very challenging game, making it very hard to take the win from him, which Ildi discovered when facing him. He definitely stands out in Pennant four as the top gun. Although Ildi was beaten, she put up a fantastic fight in the third game, forcing it out to 15 (11/6, 11/7, 15/13).

Maria marked up her second Singles win, completing a strong, rally filled three set match against Nathan. (11/4, 11/5, 11/7).

Connor and Andrew had a rip roaring match, going all the way, with three games pushing out over eleven. It was an even battle, with Andrew pulling out some terrific shots, to counter Connors tricks. But in the end Connor penciled in the Rubber for Mallee after a lengthy skirmish. (7/11, 12/10, 13/11, 7/11, 16/14).

With Mallee sitting one up, in meant a must win for Tankard in the Doubles, to give them some breathing space.

Maria and Ildi were able to with stand the Mallee pair for a short while, in fact they left Yen and Connor baffled in the third set, allowing them only one point. But then out came Yen’s big gun shots, which landed Mallee their fifth Rubber. (11/6, 11/8, 1/11, 11/5).

Maria and Yen both had two Singles wins on the board and were both seeing the ball well, but unfortunately Maria couldn’t with stand the attack from Yen, which handed Mallee the Rubber they needed for a comprehensive overall win. (11/7, 11/3, 11/3).

After watching Connor in his five set match earlier, Ildi wasn’t ready to take him lightly. With a lot of focusing from both players, the match concluded in three and Ildi was able to add a Rubber for Tankards. (11/9, 11/7, 11/6).

The final match was between Nathan and Andrew, which turned out to be very tight. Andrew got quite close to sneaking a game from Nathan, but couldn’t close it out, leaving Mallee to notch up a seventh (11/8, 11/9, 11/6).

WINNER : Mallee Meats  7  to Tankard Dental  4.
