After resuming from the school holiday break round six action of the Sunraysia Table Tennis senior pennant featured Mallee Bearings continuing on their winning way just, against second placed Regional Taxation Services while bottom of the ladder Choices Flooring Mildura defeated third placed Tankard Dental to win their first match of the season. Fifth placed Weightmans Packaging defeated fourth team Cookes Pools & Spas to join them on two wins as the ladder positions tighten up.

– Mallee Bearings 6 (Arhuang (Wong) Lau 3, Mark Dorman 2) d Regional Taxation Services 5 (Jamie Kealley 2, Matt Ljubic, Thahn Nguyen 1)

Mallee Bearings’ Arhuang Lau continued on his undefeated run with three singles victories again in his team’s narrow 6-5 victory over Regional Taxation Services who tried bravely to inflict the first defeat on their opponents. For RTS youngster Jamie Kealley again won two singles for the fifth round in succession. Included in his victories was an outstanding five set win over the experienced Mark Dorman who himself has enjoyed a successful season. This match contained many fine rallies with a mix of defence and excellent forehand drives from both players. In the end it was Kealley who took the points 10-12 11-9 12-10 9-11 11-7 a thriller. Earlier Kealley took it right up to Lau with their match going to five before Lau dominated the fifth.

With Lau winning his three singles as usual, Dorman scored a key victory in the overall result when he defeated opposing number one Matt Ljubic in a lengthy five setter. Dorman played some outstanding forehand drives to take the points against his talented opponent 7-11 11-3 6-11 11-5 11-9 an excellent win after trailing one game to two, a vital result given the closeness of the final score in the battle for the four points.

– Choices Flooring Mildura 7 (Wayne Carmichael 3, Liam Wood 2, Daniel Jansen 1) d Tankard Dental 4 (Kate Carmichael 2, Rohan Reimers 1)

After a sluggish start to the season Choices Flooring Mildura showed good form defeating third placed Tankard Dental to record their first victory of the year. Wayne Carmichael led the team well winning three singles while teammate

Liam Wood won two including a solid three set victory over Rohan Reimers in the first match of the night to set his team off to a good start. When Wood combined with Carmichael in the first doubles to defeat Kate Carmichael and Reimers in a classic five setter, 12-10 in the fifth, the scoreline read 3-1 in Choice’s favour and from here Tankards could not recover. Another crucial match was the five set win by Daniel Jansen over Ed Hung, a match of long rallies resulted in Jansen winning 11-6 11-5 4-11 6-11 11-9, Hung fought back bravely from a 0-2 deficit however Jansen was able to remain steady in a tense fifth.

– Weightmans Packaging 6 (Shannon Bowen 3, Reece Kurrle 2) d Cookes Pools & Spas 5 (Paul Kealley 2, Jackson Tung, Russell Walder 1)

Weightmans Packaging were able to avenge their first-round loss to Cookes Pools & Spas winning 6-5 and in doing so have joined their opponents on two wins and are fifth, only percentage from fourth. This match was dominated early by Weightmans number one and two Shannon Bowen and Reece Kurrle. Bowen won both his first two singles as expected however for the second time this season Reece Kurrle outplayed opposing number one Jackson Tung in a lengthy five setter. This was a match of power hitting from both players and good retrieving by Tung however Kurrle came out on top 11-9 16-14 6-11 7-11 11-7 in a top-class match.

When Bowen and Kurrle combined in the first doubles to win in another close five set tussle over Tung and Paul Kealley it looked good for Weightmans. At one stage they took a 5-1 lead, and it looked like a big win was coming up however Cookes were able to win four of the five final rubbers to make the score more respectable. They almost made it five from five when Jackson Tung took a two games to one lead over Shannon Bowen in another amazing five set result. Bowen was able to recover and win his third singles enabling Weightmans to record their second win of the season.

This was the second time Bowen had won three singles and if he can maintain this form Weightmans will be dangerous as teams tussle for a top four position.

Choices Flooring Mildura 7 Ashley Morrison (3), Terry Martin (1), Andrew Jones (2) defeated Pinnacle Packers 4 Marcus Cimino (2), Peter Midgley (1), Peter Fitzpatrick (0).

In our first round back after the holidays, Choices Flooring retained third place on the ladder after fending off a solid attack from fourth placed Pinnacle Packers.

Choices Flooring began the night strong, taking the first two rubbers; Jones soundly defeating Midgley in three sets 11-4, 11-2, 11-4 and skipper Morrison besting Fitzpatrick also in three 11-4, 11-6, 11-5. Cimino interjected with a win over Martin 11-9, 11-8, 11-6 but Choices Flooring stayed steadfast with Morrison and Martin defeating Cimino and Midgley in the first doubles match 11-7, 11-3, 7-11, 8-11, 11-1.

Morrison then defeated Midgley in three sets 11-7, 11-2, 11-9 and Cimino, the only one from his team to score any rubbers so far, took his second singles win over Jones 12-10, 11-8, 11-3. Martin then took the fifth rubber for his side, defeating Fitzpatrick 11-6, 11-6, dropping the third 11-13 but bringing it home in the fourth 11-1.

Packers looked beaten but they managed to hold off Choices Flooring in the second doubles match, which was a scrap between Cimino and Fitzpatrick taking on Morrison and Jones. Packers downed their opponents in the first set 11-3, Choices Flooring clapped back winning the next two 11-4, 11-9, Packers then struggled in the fourth and took it 13-11 and got themselves over the line in the fifth 12-10.

Morrison then sealed the deal for his team, taking the sixth rubber by defeating Cimino 9-11, 11-3, 13-11, 11-6. In the second last rubber, Martin had a hard time against Midgley who narrowly took the first set 12-10, Martin nabbed the second 11-5, and then Midgley came back and took the third 11-9. Martin then won the fourth set 11-9 but Midgley held out and not without difficulty took the fifth 12-10. Finally, Jones defeated Fitzpatrick in straight sets 11-6,11-9, 11-8, wrapping up the night.

Final score 7 rubbers to 4 and 25 games to 16.

Weightman’s Packaging 6 John Fitzpatrick (2), Sony Sefer (2), Therese Fitzpatrick (2) defeated Mallee Meats 5 Jason Gifkins (3), Harry Gujral (0), James Jarvis (0).

It was David versus Goliath in the match-up of ladder leaders Mallee Meats taking on fifth placed Weightman’s Packaging. Meats have only suffered one loss so far this season and captain Gifkins was in top form, winning his three singles and both doubles matches. But Weightmans stuck to their guns and managed to work around the indomitable Gifkins, with both Fitzpatricks and Sefer all taking two singles wins to just get themselves over the line 6-5.

Jarvis and Gujral had no luck in round 6 with both of them going home empty-handed of wins. In the first match, Jarvis took a set off Sefer but could do no more, 6-11, 8-11, 11-6, 9-11. Gifkins then took the younger Fitzpatrick down, again in four 11-4, 11-5, 7-11, 11-4. Skipper Fitzpatrick had some trouble against Gujral but stayed steady and won 12-10, 11-9, 12-10. Meats then

levelled the game score 2 games all in the first doubles, winning in three 11-8, 11-7, 11-7.

Gifkins then got his team ahead by one rubber with a victory over Sefer, winning in three sets 11-6, 11-6, 11-7. The two Fitzpatricks however refused to give an inch to Meats and took the next two rubbers, John Fitzpatrick cleaning up Jarvis 11-2, 11-8, 11-8 and Therese downing Gujral 12-10, 11-5, 12-10. Despite now being ahead at 4 rubbers to 3, Weightmans failed to make any headway in the doubles, losing again in straight sets 11-5, 11-9, 11-9.

Gifkins won his third singles match comfortably, besting John Fitzpatrick in three sets 12-10, 12-10, 11-9, inching ahead to bring the game score to 5-4. It was now or never for Weightmans who now needed the two remaining rubbers to win. Sefer went up against a confident Gujral who took the first two sets 11-6, 12-10. One more set and Meats would have the victory, but Sefer found his strength and turned the game on its head, winning the next three sets 11-9, 11-4, 11-3. Now at 5 rubbers all, Therese Fitzpatrick swung the final stroke to beat Meats and claim the win for her side, defeating Jarvis 11-7, 11-8, 12-10.

An outstanding effort from Weightmans to beat the top team in a closely contested match. Following this win, they move from fifth place to fourth on the ladder and Pinnacle Packers who lost their match in round 6 will go down to fifth place.

Final score 6 rubbers to 5 and 19 games to 18.

The singles aggregate after this round in this pennant is interesting, Nhat Dat is three clear on top with 15 wins although he has lost a match in each of the past three rounds, sitting in second place is Deegan Kerslake on 12 while Karly Leach, Ryan Hensgen, Steve Parker and Samanatha Campbell all are on eleven wins. Sabrina Fitzpatrick is not out of the race sitting on 10 despite missing one round.

With nine rounds to play this will be an interesting race to the end.

– Weightmans Packaging 8 (Nhat Dat, Steve Parker, Leo Parker 2) d Exposed Signage/Apparel 3 (Deegan Kerslake 2, Karly Leach 1)

In an even team performance Weightmans Packaging proved too strong for Exposed Signage/Apparel winning 8-3. Nhat Dat, Steve Parker and Leo Parker all won two singles and added to that they picked up both doubles to show the break had not disrupted their run of good form.

Birthday boy Deegan Kerslake for Exposed Signage/Apparel won the first game of the night, comfortably against Leo Parker to give his team a positive start however from here Weightmans strung together seven victories in succession to stamp their authority.

Amongst these matches there was some entertaining table tennis with Weightmans Steve Parker recording an excellent win against Karly Leach in four sets, later Steve was under pressure against opposing number three Brenden Johnson and this match went on and on with Steve eventually grabbing the points 8-11 11-8 11-3 15-17 15-13 what a match! Prior to this five setter Leo Parker scored his best win of his short career when he outlasted Exposed number one Karly Leach in another marathon 8-11 11-9 4-11 11-8 12-10. Well played Leo.

Late in the match Exposed Signage/Apparel put two wins together to gain some respectability with Karly Leach, after being defeated by both Parkers earlier, showing good form to defeat aggregate leader Nhat Dat 5-11 11- 11-9 12-10. Then on his fifteenth birthday Deegan Kerslake fought back from the jaws of defeat to win against Steve Parker 6-11 9-11 11-8 11-8 11-7.

Deegan was the best performer for Exposed winning two singles.

The scoreline may have looked one sided but Weightmans lost a couple of close five setters and will regroup from this defeat.

 Winner: Weightmans Packaging 8 d Exposed Signage/Apparel 3

Games:  27 to 17

– Regional Taxation Services 8 (Sam Campbell 3, Sabrina Fitzpatrick 2, Hayden Wilson 1) d Sammy’s Slammers 3 (Ryan Hensgen 2, Koby Grace 1)

With the defeat of Exposed Signage/Apparel this round, Regional Taxation Services have moved to the same number of wins given their 8-3 victory over fourth team Sammy’s Slammers.

This match was dominated by RTS number two Samantha Campbell who won three singles as well as participating in both doubles’ victories. Sammy’s Slammers were kind enough to allow Sam to play her matches early to allow her to catch the bus out of town later in the evening. Maybe Sam should catch a bus every week???

The Slammers took the first win of the match when number two Koby Grace proved too good for Hayden Wilson just! This was a great spectacle going to five sets and it was Koby who took the points narrowly 11-7 4-11 10-12 13-11 11-9 a marathon.

The other highlight match was another five set contest when the captain’s met. Regional Taxation Services skipper Sabrina Fitzpatrick was out of the blocks quickly against Ryan Hensgen winning the first two games easily before Ryan steadied and fought his way back. After many long rallies it was Ryan who took the match 5-11 6-11 11-7.

Regional Taxation Services would be happy with this performance, apart from Sam’s excellent form, Sabrina Fitzpatrick won two singles while Hayden Wilson after a hard training session on Monday won one.

PENNANT FOUR:

Here we are back at the Table. Everyone should have hopefully had a refreshing break over the School Holidays and Easter, but it’s nice to get back to hitting that little Orange / White Ball and challenging ourselves.

Round 6 in Pennant four saw both contests very close, with Tankard Dental holding a very tight grip on the top place and bottom of the ladder, Dunkley Scales notched up a win, to boost their confidence.

– Tankard Dental 6 (Leanne Wilson 3, Ildi Healy 2) d Weightmans Packaging 5 (Glenn Leeson 2, Gary Leach, Eddie Parker 1)

Tankard – Leanne Wilson, Ildi Healy and Jakob Grzan. Weightman’s – Glenn Leeson, Gary Leach and Eddie Parker.

Jakob has a very good eye for keeping the ball on the Table and is improving with every week. When he came up against Gary in the first match, it was a real tussle and although Gary came away with the win, there were some very close calls (11/5, 13/11, 11/9).  The first set of Singles brought with it two Rubbers for Tankard, with wins coming from Ildi, over Eddie and Leanne, over Glenn, both of these matches went to four sets, with both teams throwing together some terrific rallies. Eddie got the better of Ildi in their first set, but Ildi took hold of the match, winning the last three (4/11, 11/9, 11/8, 11/5). Glenn put up a great fight against Leanne, but didn’t come through with the goods in the finish (5/11, 11/9, 11/8, 11/7).

The all important first Doubles added another win to Tankards list after Leanne and Ildi found a way to break the good form of Glenn and Gary’s Doubles run. It was a challenging match, with a lot of twists and turns (11/8, 11/9, 9/11, 11/5).

Gary put Ildi to the test in their encounter, with one of the sets going out to 15, but Ildi’s determination got her a three set win, which seemed like trouble brewing for Weightman’s, with the Rubbers now sitting at 4 to 1 in Tankards favor (11/9, 15/13, 11/6). As hard as Jakob tried, he was no match for Glenn’s tricky shots, giving Weightman’s the much needed win (11/3, 11/4, 11/3). Eddie gave Leanne a bit of a scare in the first set forcing the score to 14/12, but the consistency of Leanne’s game is very hard to conquer, with Tankard penciling in another Rubber, leaving them only needing one more to take victory (14/12, 11/7, 11/7).

Who would snatch the last Doubles ? It was Leanne and Jakob against Glenn and Eddie, which, although only seeing out three sets, was a great clash. Weightman’s hung in there, for their third win (11/8, 11/9, 11/6).

Weightman’s Captain Glenn, faced up to Ildi, with an aim to give his team a chance to pull in another win and his focus paid off, narrowing the Rubbers to 5 to 4 (11/7, 11/6, 12/10). This could be the telling point, as Gary came up against Tankard’s Captain, Leanne. Gary was able to sneak in a set, but the clever placement from Leanne enabled her to snare the winning Rubber, giver her team the overall win and secure her spot on the top of the aggregate, marking up another well deserved three singles wins (11/8, 7/11, 11/7, 11/4). The two number three players fought out the last Singles match, with the four sets bringing many long rallies. Well done to both, with Eddie finishing with the win, over Jakob (11/2, 10/12, 14/12, 11/7).

GAMES : 19  to 19.

– Dunkley Scales 6 (Maria Starikov 3, Jenny Leach 1) d Mallee Meats 5 (Wendy Simpson, Curtis Crabtree 2, Conner Burnett 1)

DunkleyMaria Starikov, Jen Leach and Jake Hines. Mallee – Curtis Crabtree, Nathan Beard (fill in Wendy Simpson) and Conner Burnett.

Dunkley’s Jake had a tough start to his night, coming up against Mallee’s Captain, Curtis. It was a good skirmish, with Jake coming close in the second set and Curtis finishing it up in three (11/8, 12/10, 11/4). The defensive game of Maria was too much for Connor to handle in the end, but he was able to grab one set (13/11, 11/2, 8/11, 11/7). Jen was shaking in her boots, coming up against Wendy, with her past experience, so it took quite a lot of focus to push the friendly clash out to five sets. Wendy has some amazing shots in her bag of tricks and although she has had a little break, her game still takes some beating. A great game Wen, snagging a Rubber for Mallee (11/8, 7/11, 7/11, 12/10, 11/7).

Maria and Jen toughed it out in their win over Curtis and Connor in the first Doubles. The second and third sets saw the scores teetering back and forth, with edges and net balls by both teams. Dunkley evened up the scores, with both on two Rubbers now ( 11/5, 10/12, 16/14, 11/5).

Maria stepped up again, this time against Curtis, with another five set beauty. It see sawed from one to the other, with Maria’s defensive game bringing her success (9/11, 11/9, 6/11, 11/5, 11/9). Jake showed some good skills in his first set with Wendy, but this one was never going to go the way of Dunkley, after a very quick last two sets (12/10, 11/2, 11/1). Connor’s game has certainly made some big improvements and he pushed Jen to 12 in the last set of three (11/7, 11/7, 12/10).

With the Rubbers sitting at 4 to 3 in the favor of Dunkley, would they be able to hold on, with the last Doubles about to be played.

Maria and Jake were made to earn their win, after their battle with Curtis and Wendy. There were no easy games, with plenty of slices and dices. It was a five set bout which landed Dunkley with a fifth Rubber (9/11, 11/9, 7/11, 11/8, 11/9).

It was essential that Mallee win the next match, to stay in the game. With Maria still on a high, not having lost a match through the evening, it was bound to be a game worth watching. Maria’s game wears you down and this is exactly what happened to Wendy, falling to a very defensive game (9/11, 11/9, 11/3, 11/5). This completed a mighty effort by Maria, giving her a clean sweep and a massive help to Dunkley’s victory. Curtis still has the touch and was too much for Jen, completing a four set win (11/6, 11/9, 11/4, 11/4). Jake and Connor always make the most of their chance to face up to one another and this was no different, with it going all the way. Five sets of long rallies, saw Connor grab a point for his side (6/11, 11/8, 11/5, 9/11, 11/8).
