– Cookes Pools & Spas 7 (Kate Carmichael 3, Liam Wood 2, Lee Leeson 1) d Weightmans Packaging 4 (Mark Dorman 2, Russell Walder 1)

Cookes Pools & Spas has continued their winning run in round six of the Sunraysia Table Tennis pennant with a 7-4 victory over Weightmans Packaging. Kate Carmichael for Cookes continued her good form winning three singles and is now outright leader of the singles aggregate. Her teammates played a key role with fill in Liam Wood winning two while Lee Leeson won one. In an unusual statistic all the Cookes players defeated opposing number one Gavin Carmichael.

In the daughter father clash Kate won a thriller in a very close contest 17-15 13-15 17-15.

For Weightmans Mark Dorman continued his consistent season winning two singles while Russell Walder won one.

– Mallee Bearings 6 (Reece Kurrle 3, Wayne Carmichael 2) d Regional Taxation Services 5 (Jackson Tung 2, Leon Brown, Ashley Morrison 1)

Reece Kurrle with three singles victories was the difference in Mallee Bearings 6-5 defeat of Regional Taxation Services. This was an entertaining contest with several matches going to three games. Kurrle enjoyed his best form of the season and his three set 14-16 15-13 15-10 victory over Jackson Tung proved to be crucial in the narrow result. While the doubles were shared the second was important with Wayne Carmichael and Quentin Clark taking the points in straight sets over Tung and Ash Morrison.

The battle of the number ones was outstanding when Bearings skipper Wayne Carmichael stepped up to the table against Jackson Tung, spectators witnessed some amazing rallies with both players displaying an array of shots, the highlight shots on at least three occasions were the side spinning forehand drives around the net from Tung, a rare shot in table tennis. This was the first loss for Camichael this season and with this win Tung sits second on the aggregate list.

– Max Miller Carpets 6 (Arhuang Lau 3, Liam Wood 2) d Tankard Dental 5 (Thanh Nguyen ,2 Rohan Reimers, Paul Kealley 1)

The final match featured Tankard Dental versus Max Miller Carpets and in round one of this season only five matches ago Tankards proved too powerful winning 11-0 however this time the Carpeters tasted success winning 6-5 in a major reversal of form. For the victors Arhuang Lau and Liam Wood continued their good form winning three and two singles respectively.

Both Wood’s wins were come from behind victories after comfortably losing the first game. In the first match of the night opponent Paul Kealley raced through the first game before Wood proved too good 4-15 15-5 16-14. Later with the match on the line Wood outlasted the consistent Rohan Reimers 9-15 15-12 15-8 to secure the valuable four points.

All matches resulted in a six rubbers to five result, with Pinnacle Packers the big winners, jumping from third on the ladder to top of the tree.

– Pinnacle Packers 6 (Daniel Jansen 3, Rasin Bhuiyan 1) d Max Miller Carpets 5 (Jamie Kealley, Jordan Cole 2, David Sergi 1)

In short, Daniel Jansen won this match for Pinnacle Packers.

None of the Max Miller Carpets trio could lay a glove on Jansen in singles play, and although both doubles rubbers went to three sets, Jansen and his partners prevailed.

Max Miller Carpets won five of the nine singles rubbers, although tellingly no-one could get a set from Jansen. The team which assumed the ladder lead only last round, saw their opponents here take it from them and relegate them to second.

Rasin Bhuiyan picked up one singles rubber for Pinnacle Packers, a 16-14, 15-13 win against David Sergi in the deciding rubber.

Max Miller Carpets got off to good starts in both the doubles contests, Jamie Kealley and Jordan Cole led 15-9 after the first set against Jansen and Bhuiyan, but the Pinnacle Packers pair responded in the second and third sets 15-7, 15-11 to take the win. The second doubles was a similar story, Kealley and Sergi took the first set from Jansen and Andrew Kremor convincingly 15-6, but then lost their way, Jansen and Kremor taking the next two 15-8, 15-10. A win in either doubles would have secured the match for Max Miller Carpets.

For Max Miller Carpets, both Jamie Kealley and Jordan Cole won two singles rubbers (both against Bhuiyan and Kremor) and Sergi one (against Kremor).

Final scores: 6 rubbers to 5 and 14 games to 12.

– Mallee Meats 6 (Tom Morrison 3, Terry Martin, Ryan Peterson 1) d Weightmans Packaging 5 (Jeremy Corrin 2, Shaun Gifford, Therese Fitzpatrick 1)

Such is the closeness of this competition that Weightmans Packaging, who last round were defeated by Max Miller Carpets, an in this match lost to Mallee Meats, in the course of two rounds fell from top of the ladder to fourth, after having won their first four rounds.

Mallee Meats have their number two Tom Morrison to thank for their win here. Morrison finished with three singles wins (an impressive 14-16, 15-

13, 15-13 victory over Weightmans Packaging captain Jeremy Corrin; and straight sets wins against Therese Fitzpatrick and Shaun Gifford); and with his captain Terry Martin in the first doubles, the Mallee Meats pair proved too strong against Corrin and Gifford, winning 15-10, 15-10.

Apart from that doubles win, Martin had a quiet night, with just a solitary singles win, a less than impressive three set win against Gifford 15-9, 14-16, 15-13.

The Mallee Meats number three Leon Bailey was absent, and his replacement was the impressive newcomer Ryan Peterson, who currently plays in pennant three. With the scores locked at five rubbers all, and one to play, Peterson saw off Therese Fitzpatrick in a nail biting three setter 14-16, 15-11, 15-13.

For Weightmans Packaging, captain Jeremy Corrin won two singles, and Gifford and Fitzpatrick one each. Corrin and Fitzpatrick took the second doubles 15-13, 13-15, 15-7 against Martin and Peterson.

Final scores: 6 rubbers to 5 and 14 games to 13.

– Cookes Pools & Spas 6 (Kevin Johns 3, Marita Grace 1) d Mallee Bearings 5 (John Fitzpatrick, Josh Arnold 2, James Jarvis 1)

Cookes Pools & Spas number three Marita Grace denied Mallee Bearings their first win of the season when she defeated James Jarvis 15-10, 13-15, 15-5 in the deciding rubber of this contest.

This is not the first time she has won the final rubber for her team, even though on the other occasion it did not result in victory on the night. She is proving a valuable number three for Kevin Johns, and has now won five rubbers in the six rounds played. Further, she and Johns have three of the six doubles rubbers played in what is becoming a solid debut season.

As for Johns, he kept his spot at the top of the aggregate ladder by virtue of three wins here, (against Josh Arnold 15-8, 7-15, 15-9, and straight sets wins over James Jarvis and John Fitzpatrick).

Those were the only singles rubbers won by Cookes Pools & Spas, the doubles proving their route to victory. Johns and Luca Capizzoto defeated Fitzpatrick and Arnold 15-10, 15-12, and Johns and Grace and even easier win against Fitzpatrick and Jarvis 15-11, 15-9.

Mallee Bearings played well, but not well enough. Fitzpatrick and Arnold won two singles, and Jarvis one. But their doubles play is hurting them, they have now won just two doubles contests so far this season, two wins out of twelve played.

PENNANT THREE:

When these four teams last played each in round one, the losers in this round won, but now half way through the season and the tables have been turned.

– Sammy’s Slammers 6 (Nick Kiapekos, Ryan Peterson 2) d Regional Taxation Services 5 (Leo Parker 3, Nhat Dat, Brian White 1)

After losing six rubbers to five in the first round to Regional Taxation Services, Sammy’s Slammers returned the favour in this round, winning by the same margin.

Ryan Peterson proved to be the glue to keeping Sammy’s Slammers together, as he had another productive night of table tennis. As well as subbing in pennant two (where he picked up an important singles win), Peterson matched his captain Nick Kiapekos with two singles wins (both losing to Regional Taxation Services captain Leo Parker), and being entrusted by his captain to take part in both doubles, duly delivered. Peterson and Kiapekos proved too steady for Nhat Dat and Leo Parker, defeating them 15-12, 15-12, and with schoolmate Deegan Kerslake, Peterson saw off Parker and the experienced Brian White 15-12, 15-14.

Peterson’s steadiness proved the perfect foil to the firepower from Regional Taxation Services.

With Leo Parker winning three singles, there was always the threat he would take the game away from Sammy’s Slammers, but Nhat Dat and Brian White were kept to just a solitary win in singles play. That gave Regional Taxation Services five of the nine singles rubbers, but of course those doubles losses, and Peterson’s involvement in them proved the difference.

Final scores: 6 rubbers to 5 and 14 games to 11.

– Weightmans Packaging 8 (Karly Leach, Glenn Leeson, Dianne Hannig 2) d Exposed Signage/Apparel 3 (Steve Parker 3)

Round one was a happy time for Exposed Signage & Apparel. In that match they defeated their opponents here Weightmans Packaging, ten rubbers to one. However, this time Weightmans Packaging turned the tables on their tormentors from that opening round.

Exposed Signage & Apparel were without captain Sabrina Fitzpatrick (Anthony Fox subbing) and Wendy Simpson (Koby Grace).

Weightmans Packaging were also without their number three Chelsey Avers, Chelsey replaced by the very capable Dianne Hannig.

In the event, Weightmans Packaging proved too strong – six wins from nine singles rubbers (Karly Leach, Glenn Leeson and Hannig all scoring two wins apiece), and wins in both doubles made this a very lop-sided scoresheet.

The one player the Weightmans Packaging trio could not get the better of was the Exposed Signage & Apparel number two Steve Parker. Parker defeated Hannig and Leach in straight sets, and Glenn Leeson in three 15-8, 13-15, 15-12.

And although both doubles went to Weightmans Packaging, they could have just as easily gone to Exposed Signage & Apparel. Leach and Leeson defeating Anthony Fox and Steve Parker in three sets 15-12 in the third, and Leach and Hannig won a tight two setter against Fox and Koby Grace 17-15, 15-13.

PENNANT FOUR:

It was two completely different battles this week in P4, one going to the very last game and the other over in a flash.

Win Loss Pts Rubbers Games % %

Dunkley Scales 5 1 20 39 27 85 62 144% 137%

Mallee Meats 2 4 8 25 41 68 84 61% 81%
Weightmans Packaging 1 5 4 28 38 69 83 74% 83%

– Dunkley Scales 8 (Katrina Clifford, Brandt Dolic 3) d Mallee Meats 3 (Maria Starikov, Jenny Leach, Selma Mayne 1)

The Singles started off with Dunkley’s Brant Dolic taking the win after forcing Maria Starikov to three sets (15/13,11/15, 1511). Katrina Clifford made short work of Jen Leach with her two sets win (15/8, 15/10), but Selma Mayne marked up the first win for Mallee, although Oliver Bremner put up a good fight (15/13, 15/12).

Winning the Doubles is always of benefit in deciding the winner, but its an area Mallee Meats has struggled with of late. The Kat and Brant combination is a tough one to break through and one Maria and Jen couldn’t overcome (15/8, 15/8).

The two number one’s were up next, with Kat once again putting together a winner, but Maria certainly made her work hard in the first set (20/18, 15/12). Brant, the second power house in Dunkley’s team had an easy win over Selma (15/4, 15/3). Jen gave Mallee a very small window to break back, with her win against Oliver leaving the score at 5 to 2, in Dunkley’s favor (15/11, 15/12).

As mentioned, the Doubles can be a deciding factor and this was exactly the case on Wednesday, when Kat and Oliver added the point needed for their team to collect the win, after Maria and Selma gave it their best shot and took it to three sets (13/15, 15/4, 15/8).

Selma played a good game, but Kat continued her winning run (15/11, 15/9). After Oliver pushed her in the first set, Maria came away with her first win of the night, which is unusual, as she is normally very consistent (15/13, 15/6). The last Match of the evening saw Brant trounce Jen in an overwhelming victory (15/4,15/4).

Winner – Dunkley Scales 8 to Mallee Meats 3 (games 16 to 8).

– Tankard Dental 6 (Curtis Crabtree 3, Nathan Beard 2, Derek Hung 1) d Weightmans Packaging 5 (Tom Gilmour 2, Gary Leach 1)

Weightman’s Tom Gilmour started off the night against Nathan Beard with a two set win going Tom’s way (15/13, 15/8). Tankards Curtis Crabtree was up against Gary Leach, which was a well fought match, which went to Curtis (15/12, 15/11). Cetty Bonaccorso gave Derek Hung a scare in the first set, but he pulled in the win in the next (16/14, 15/8).

The Doubles brought things back to even with Weightman’s pairing of Tom and Gary, being too much for Derek and Curtis (15/9, 15/6).

With the ledger on equal terms now, Tankard grabbed the next two Wins, firstly with Curtis defeating Tom in a close three setter (7/15, 15/11, 15/12), followed by Nathan’s win over Cetty (15/9, 15/6). The last Singles in this bracket was a beauty, with Weightman’s needing to add another win to the board, both Gary and Derek were totally focused, with the three set battle landing Gary his first singles win for the night (15/13, 11/15, 15/12).

Tom and Cetty were the Winning pair in the last lot of Doubles, knocking over Derek and Nathan in an exciting three setter (8/15, 15/9, 15/8), bringing all back to square again.

Cetty tried her hardest, but was just short of taking Curtis to a third set, in a tight match (15/13, 16/14). Derek didn’t have the best of nights, going down to Tom in two sets (15/7, 15/8) which left the last game to decide the final score. With Nathan’s tricky play up against Gary, determined to keep his concentration. It went all the way, with the last set being a thriller and Nathan just snatching the Win to give Tankard Dental the Victory (15/4, 11/15, 20/18).

Winner – Tankard Dental 6 to Weightman’s Packaging 5 (games 14 to 12).
