ROUND ELEVEN

Scoresheets-Winter-2025-Rnd-11.pdf

PENNANT ONE:

Round eleven of Sunraysia Table Tennis was to be the second head to head clash of aggregate leaders Arhuang Lau versus Wayne Carmichael to decide who would take the lead in the singles race as both enjoyed a 25-2-win loss ratio.
Disappointingly the big match did not eventuate with Lau a late withdrawal due to ill health, much to the disappointment of those expecting to witness a top-class match.

Alas we will have to wait until round 16. With Lau out and Mallee Bearings teammate Mark Dorman unavailable, Reece Kurrle and Jackson Murphy came in as replacements in what eventuated into a thriller of a match. Bottom team Choices Flooring Mildura were coming off a win last round and another win could give them a faint hope of playing finals.

– Choices Flooring Mildura 6 (Wayne Carmichael 3, Liam Wood 1) d Mallee Bearings 5 (Reece Kurrle, Jackson Murphy 2, Tom Morrison 1)

The first block of singles saw the Choices team win two matches courtesy of Liam Wood outplaying Tom Morrison in four sets while Wayne Carmichael overcame a plucky Jackson Murphy who had opportunities to take Carmichael to five in an action packed match, however Carmichael after trailing in the fourth was able to fight back to win in four.
The first doubles went to five sets and what a match it turned out to be, Choice’s pair Carmichael and Wood matched up against fill-in Reece Kurrle and Tom Morrison with these two narrowly taking the first 12-10. The contest stayed close however the Choices pair were able to take the second and third 11-7 and 13-11. The fourth was dominated by Kurrle and Morrison who unleashed some big forehands powering to an 11-5 win to level the match at two rubbers all.
The fifth saw Kurrle and Morrison again take control and with some excellent play took a 10-7 lead and what looked to be a match winning position however Carmichael and Wood remained calm to win the next five points and take the match 12-10 in the fifth, an amazing comeback which had massive ramifications in the battle of the four points.

The remaining singles went as expected, Carmichael winning three to now move three clear on the singles aggregate from Lau and Matt Ljubic who won three this round.
The second doubles was also crucial for the Choices team and it was Wayne Carmichael and Daniel Jansen who outpointed Jackson Murphy and Tom Morrison in three close sets and by winning both doubles the Choices Flooring team had won 6-5 to keep themselves in the finals race.

– Regional Taxation Services 6 (Matt Ljubic 3, Jamie Kealley, Thanh Nguyen 1) d Weightmans Packaging 5 (Shannon Bowen, Reece Kurrle 2)

Ladder leader Regional Taxation Services survived a scare against fourth placed Weightmans Packaging winning 6-5, in this contest there were five five set matches indicating how close these two teams are.
The Regional Taxation Services trio proved to be the steadier by winning four of these five set matches.
For the victors skipper Matt Ljubic played a key role winning three singles, his match against opposition captain Shannon Bowen was a beauty. Bowen was in control early winning the first two games comfortably before Ljubic struck back to level at two games all on the back of some outstanding table tennis. In the fifth Ljubic was on a roll and raced to a 10-5 lead and the match appeared all over however Bowen had other ideas and amazingly rattled off five points in succession, the score now 10 all. In a grandstand finish Ljubic was able to hold his nerve and win 13-11, the spectators had witnessed a top-class contest.

In the washup the doubles were shared and along with Ljubic winning three singles, teammates Jamie Kealley and Thahn Nguyen each won one. With the score line at five rubbers all Nguyen was able to outlast the persistent Lee Leeson in a lengthy five setter.

– Cookes Pools & Spas 7 (Jackson Tung 3, Paul Kealley 2, Russell Walder 1) d Tankard Dental 4 (Kate Carmichael 2, Rohan Reimers 1)

Third placed Cookes Pools & Spas moved to within one win of second place when they proved too strong for Tankard Dental winning 7-4. In an even team effort Cookes Jackson Tung, Paul Kealley and Russell Walder won three, two and one singles respectively. Five setters featured in this match and Cookes were able to win three of the four played. One of these was the singles between Tung and Tankard Dental number two Rohan Reimers with Tung outlasting his hard-working opponent 11-9 in a big match.

Tung would later also take another lengthy five setter over Kate Carmichael 11-9 11-13 12-10 5-11 11-7, Tung playing many powerful forehands in what was a tough match.
Cookes finished strongly winning the final three singles after the scores were locked at four rubbers all.

Weightman’s Packaging 6 John Fitzpatrick (2), Harry Gujral (2), Therese Fitzpatrick (2) defeated Choices Flooring Mildura 5 Ashley Morrison (1), Terry Martin (1), Andrew Jones (1).

Weightmans’ had an uphill battle against second-placed Choices Flooring in round 11, with the latter taking the first four rubbers of the night but Weightmans somehow finding it in themselves to come from behind and win the night.

The night opened with an exhilarating match, with Therese Fitzpatrick taking on Terry Martin and going down after five long sets 7-11,11-5, 9-11,12-10,8-11. Then Jones caused a big upset, defeating skipper John Fitzpatrick again in five sets 11-9, 8-11, 9-11,11-6, 11-9. Morrison had some trouble against Gujral but brought it home in the end 11-8, 11-6, 9-11,11-5. Weightmans have had very little luck in their doubles efforts this season and tonight was no better with John Fitzpatrick and Gujral going down in four against a stalwart Choices Flooring 11-6, 8-11, 10-12, 9-11.

Now 4-0 down, Weightmans needed to get some wins on the board. John Fitzpatrick led the charge by defeating Martin after dropping the first 6-11 and then going on to win 13-11, 11-8, 11-6. Little sister Therese then flipped the script and took a decisive win over captain Morrison, cleaning him up in three sets 14-12, 11-3, 11-8, while teammate Gujral battled it out with Jones. Jones took the first set 14-12, Gujral fired back and won the next 11-4, Jones stayed steady and took the third 11-6, but Gujral hung in there and took the last two 11-8, 11-4. Weightmans once again fell to Choices Flooring in the second doubles, losing in four 9-11, 9-11, 11-8, 9-11 bringing the game score to 5-3, with Choices Flooring now just one game away from the victory.

With this in mind Weightmans threw caution to the wind and got to work. Captain Fitzpatrick took down Morrison in three sets 11-2, 11-9, 11-7 and Gujral defeated Martin in four 11-2, 11-6, 9-11, 11-4; evening the score 5-5.

The tiebreaker would be Therese Fitzpatrick versus Andrew Jones with Jones getting ahead early, winning the first two sets 11-5, 11-8, Fitzpatrick struggling back and finding a way through in the third 13-11, and then fighting all the way to the finish line to win 11-5, 12-10.

Final score 6 rubbers to 5 and 25 games to 21.

Pinnacle Packers 6 Marcus Cimino (2), Peter Midgley (1), Peter Fitzpatrick (1) defeated Cookes Pools & Spas 5 Quentin Clark (3), Duy Truong (2), Michael Tan (0).

Another close 6-5 win for fifth-placed Pinnacle Packers who at this point in the season are fighting to get into the top four. Despite captain Clark getting his three singles wins and teammate Truong winning two they couldn’t best Packers who narrowly won four singles and both doubles matches.

Truong took his first win for the night by defeating Peter Fitzpatrick in straight sets 11-5, 11-6, 13-11. Teammate Tan then gave Cimino some trouble but lost in four 9-11, 11-8, 6-11, 8-11 while Clark then fended off an attack from Midgley, winning in three 11-8, 15-13, 15-13. Both sides went head-to-head in the first doubles with neither giving an inch; Packers took the first set 11-8, Cookes the second 11-6, back to Packers in the third 11-6, Cookes levelled it in the fourth 11-7 but Packers came through in the end and won 11-4.

Truong then did his best but came up short against Cimino who took the win in four sets 8-11, 11-8, 11-7, 11-7. Clark downed Fitzpatrick in straight sets 11-6, 11-7, 11-5 and Midgley bested his teammate Tan again in straight sets 11-5, 11-6, 11-6. Packers then weathered the attack that Cookes thrust upon them and took the second doubles as well 12-10, 9-11,11-8, 13-11, getting themselves 5-3 ahead.

The two captains then faced off, resulting in a firecracker of a five-setter. Cimino looked good from the start, winning the first two 11-9, 11-7, but Clark found a chink in the armour and attacked hard, snatching the next three sets 11-5, 11-9, 11-7. Teammate Truong backed him up, taking down Midgely in three sets 11-8, 11-9, 11-8 leaving Tan to win the tiebreaker at 5-5. Tan won the first set 11-6, Fitzpatrick fought back and took the second 11-4, Tan got ahead and won the next 11-8, but the more experienced Fitzpatrick triumphed, winning the next two 11-6, 11-9.

Final score 6 rubbers to 5 and 20 games to 22.

The top two teams flexed their muscles this round and have opened a sizeable gap on the remaining two teams with five rounds to play.

Sammy’s Slammers 1 9 0 4 40 70 173 262 57% 66%

Ladder leader Weightmans Packaging bounced back to form after their first loss last round while Deegan Kerslake, by winning three singles, helped second team Exposed Signage/Apparel to defeat Regional Taxation Services 8-3.

In the singles race, leader Nhat Dat won three matches for the first time in 6 rounds to maintain his one lead over Deegan while “Consistent” Steve Parker, by winning three singles, moved to third place forging two ahead of Ryan Hensgen.

– Weightmans Packaging 8 (Nhat Dat, Steve Parker 3) d Sammy’s Slammers 3 (Ryan Hensgen, Koby Grace, Yen Hwak 1)

Both teams had a first last round with ladder leader Weightmans Packaging tasting defeat for the first time while Sammy’s Slammers recorded their first win and what a big win it was. The Slammers started this match well when Koby Grace proved too steady for Weightmans number 3 Leo Parker winning in straight sets 13-11 11-8 13-11 a close contest all the way.

Slammers number two Yen Hwak then surprised aggregate leader Nhat Dat winning the first two games, the first game easily and the second game very close, could Yen cause a big upset? Nhat Dat however showed why he is the aggregate leader by racing through the third comfortably and then steadied to control the remainder of the match going on to win 4-11 9-11 11-2 11-6 11-7 a good fight back.

Last round Yen had also taken a two game to love lead against second on the aggregate, Deegan Kerslake only to go down in five as well. Yen is practising hard on a Monday and maybe a big scalp is not far away.

Back to this match and this was another opportunity for the unlucky Slammers as skipper Ryan Hensgen after narrowly losing the first game against the “Consistent” Steve Parker took the second and third before Steve steadied and took the lengthy match 13-11 2-11 9-11 11-4 11-6.

Steve then combined with Dat to control the first doubles over Ryan and Koby going on to win 11-8 13-11 11-3.

The ladder leaders were now taking control and when Dat defeated Koby in four sets Weightmans had taken a 4-1 lead. Sammy’s skipper Ryan Hensgen arrested the situation by defeating Leo in straight sets however from here Weightmans jumped into action sealing the match by winning the next four rubbers.

The highlight match was the last contest played between the two number three players; Leo Parker for Weightmans took the first game by the narrowest of margins while Yen for the Slammers proved too steady in the second. Leo proved too consistent to take the third and it was then that Yen lifted, and he would go on to win 13-15 11-4 5-11 11-9 11-8, a great tussle.

With both Nhat Dat and Steve Parker winning three singles and Weightmans winning both doubles, they had bounced back strongly from last week’s solitary loss.

Winners: Weightmans Packaging 8 d Sammy’s Slammers 3

Games: 26 to 17

– Exposed Signage/Apparel 8 (Deegan Kerslake 3, Karly Leach 2, Brenden Johnson 1) d Regional Taxation Services 3 (Sam Campbell 2, Sabrina Fitzpatrick 1)

The Exposed trio of Karly Leach, Deegan Kerslake and Brenden Johnson have struck a purple patch and after losing the first game, courtesy of Sam Campbell defeating Brenden, they impressively defeated opponents Regional Taxation Services 8-3.

Fifteen-year-old Deegan Kerslake again won three singles defeating all his opponents in four sets showing great maturity beyond his years.

The only five setter to take place was a beauty with Regional Taxation Services number two Sam Campbell outlasting Karly Leach in a marathon 15-13 11-8 7-11 7-11 11-6 a great contest.

From this point the Exposed team rattled off the final five rubbers to finalise their big win.

Apart from Deegan winning three singles, Karly won two while Brenden scored a single.

Success in both doubles also bumped the score line up. Karly has her team fine tuned at the minute and they should play a big part at the business end of the season. They now have won their past four matches, the best record of any team.

For Regional Taxation Services Sam Campbell had played well to win two singles.

PENNANT FOUR:

Well, there goes Round 11 and no matter how hard we try the two bottom teams can not seem to sneak up the Ladder any further.  Tankard Dental are on top by a long way, on 8, with Weightman’s Packaging, 5, the only team who have been able to steal a win from them.

With fill in’s the flavor of the night, Tankard Dental needed a replacement for Ildi Healy, with Wendy Simpson putting her hand up there. But the Weightman’s V Dunkley encounter had to be reduced to a 2 x 2 Challenge, with Gary Leach, and Jake Hines a no show and fill in’s like needles in Hay Stack.

– Weightmans Packaging 6 (Glenn Leeson 3, Eddy Parker 2) d Dunkley Scales 3 (Maria Starikov 2, Jenny Leach 1)

Weightman’s : Glenn Leeson and Eddy Parker. Dunkley : Maria Starikov and Jen Leach.

One of the rising stars, Eddy had not trouble closing down Jen’s game. With two easy win sets, over in a flash. Jen found a little focus in the third, but Eddy had his eye in and comfortably pocketed the fourth, with Rubber number one going to Weightman’s (11/3, 11/4, 7/11, 11/7).

The first set of the Doubles saw a never ending battle, with Glenn and Eddy, taking on Maria and Jen. The clash was forced out to 17 / 15 in favor of Weightman’s and the third was pushed to 12 / 10. With some really tricky shots being played by both teams, but Maria and Jen couldn’t finish off for the win (17/15, 11/8, 12/10).

Jen found Glenn far too good in their match, which isn’t surprising, as his game is extremely hard to fathom, with such a mix of shots (11/4, 11/5, 11/7).

The match between Maria and Eddy was a ripper, with some very tight sets. These two have very good reflex’s, which brings about rally after rally. It looked like Eddy had the match in hand, but Maria’s defense kept her in the next three sets to mark up Dunkley’s fist Rubber (6/11, 11/13,11/9, 13/11, 12/10).

Weightman’s put away another Rubber when Glenn had a three set win over Maria. As said earlier, Glenn has a very good game, which is difficult to get around, with this win handing Weightman’s the overall win of the night.

WINNERS : Weightman’s Packaging  6 to Dunkley Scales 3.

GAMES :  20  to  10

– Tankard Dental 7 (Leanne Wilson, Jakob Grzan 2, Wendy Simpson 1) d Mallee Meats 4 (Curtis Crabtree 3, Nathan Beard 1)

Tankard : Leanne Wilson, Ildi Healy (fill in Wendy Simpson) and Jakob Grzan. Mallee : Curtis Crabtree, Nathan Beard and Conner Burnett.

The player of the night had to be young, 15 year old, Jakob Grzan, who had two  exceptional wins and fought very hard, but lost in his middle singles match. A very good effort for a first year player.

Jakob faced up firstly to Nathan, who has quite a few years of Table Tennis under his belt, but this didn’t hamper Jakob one little bit, in a well and fairly played match (4/11, 11/8, 11/5, 11/9).

Leanne used her skills to walk away with an easy win against Connor (11/6, 11/3, 11/3).

Mallee snuck in a Rubber in the third Single match, when Curtis fronted Wendy. It wasn’t a walk over, with Wen making him work for the win, pushing it to four sets (11/7, 7/11, 11/7, 11/4).

Leanne and Wendy came out the better in the skirmish against Curtis and Nathan, with the first two sets clear winners, the third going to Mallee and Tankard snatching the fourth (11/1, 11/2, 8/11, 11/9).

Leanne marked up her second singles, when she went up against Nathan, with Nathan giving it his best shot, but it just wasn’t up to Leanne’s game (11/6, 11/7, 11/9). Tankard’s number three was next up, fighting it out against Mallee’s number one. Jakob once again had an outstanding game, with the first two sets going his way, but Curtis was having nothing to do with that and accelerated home, winning the last three sets to give Mallee their second Rubber (6/11, 6/11, 11/1, 11/8, 12/10).

Connor played very well when he faced Wendy, with his crazy cut shots, but it was Wendy who came away with the Chocolates (11/7, 11/9, 11/6).

This took the scores to 5 to 2, so Tankard only needed one more to mark up the win.

Curtis and Connors put in a great effort, but it just didn’t stand up to the combination of Leanne and the on fire Jakob, with Tankard finding that sixth Rubber (11/3, 16/14, 5/11, 11/2).

Curtis would have been pretty please with his nights work, finding a way to get over the top of Leanne’s game, as she had only dropped one match in the season before this (11/8, 17/15, 11/7). Nathan picked up his game when he played Wendy, with a four set match landing Mallee with another Rubber (12/10, 1/11, 11/9, 12/10). The Boy with the Golden Bat played his last Singles just as well as he did his first, putting up a winning fight against Connor. What a night Jakob, well done mate (1/11, 11/8, 11/5, 11/6).
