Mallee Meats 6 Jason Gifkins (3), Harry Gujral (1), James Jarvis (1) defeated Cookes Pools & Spas 5 Quentin Clark (2), Duy Truong (2), Michael Tan (0).
Cookes Pools & Spas fought hard against Mallee Meats in order to retain their No. 3 spot on the ladder, but ultimately went down in a 6-5 battle

wherein captain Clark had his hands full, engaging in three five setters against a steadfast Meats. Following this defeat, Cookes will drop to fourth place on the ladder, while late bloomers Weightman’s Packaging will move up into their place.
Cookes have a gun player in No. 2 Duy Truong, who on the night took out two singles wins and came close to defeating aggregate leader Jason Gifkins. In his first match, he soundly defeated Jarvis in a quick three setter 11-4, 11-4, 11-5. Gifkins then defeated his teammate Tan confidently again in three 11-6, 11-5, 11-5. Gujral was then looking to grab his second rubber, giving Clark a whole lot of trouble but not quite able to finish him off, losing 7-11, 7-11, 11-8, 11-7, 9-11. Cookes then made the score 3-1 in their favour with a win in the first doubles, taking the match in four sets after a rocky start, 3-11,11-8, 11-8, 11-5.
Gifkins and Truong then squared off, Truong giving it his absolute all, and very nearly toppling the opposing captain. Gifkins took the first set 11-9, Truong then won the next two 12-10, 14-12, but Gifkins had it in him to come back from two sets down, winning the last two sets 11-8, 11-7. Clark then went up against a tough customer in the ever-improving Jarvis, who fought tooth and nail, taking the first set 11-8, Clark retaliating by winning the next two 11-7, 11-8, Jarvis just sneaking over the line in the fourth 11-9, but Clark regained control and won the fifth 11-5. Gujral then cleaned up Tan soundly, 11-2, 11-1, 11-5, bringing the score to 4-3 in Cookes’ favour.
Moving on to the second doubles, Meats forged ahead and levelled the score 4-4, beating Cookes back in four sets 11-9, 9-11, 11-9, 11-1. The time had now come for the captains to face-off, with Clark getting off to a good start in the first, winning 11-7, struggling through and taking the second 16-14,

but somehow Gifkins was able to come back from two sets down again, driving Clark back and winning 11-5, 11-8, 11-5. Cookes were disappointed at this result but it didn’t phase Truong, who by soundly defeating Gujral 11-5, 11-6, 11-3 brought the game score to 5 rubbers all. The tie-breaker would be decided out of Jarvis and Tan with the more experienced Jarvis taking the win 11-9, 11-7, 11-7.
Final score 6 rubbers to 5 and 23 games to 20.
Weightmans Packaging 6 John Fitzpatrick (3), Sony Sefer (2), Thereses Fitzpatrick (1) defeated Pinnacle Packers 5 Marcus Cimino (2), Peter Midgley (0), Deegan Kerslake (1).
Weightmans Packaging have been picking up the slack these last few rounds after a slow start to the season. In round 9 they scored a close win over fifth-placed Pinnacle Packers and will move up into third place on the ladder, taking that position from Cookes Pools & Spas. Pennant 3 player Deegan Kerslake makes his debut in Pennant 2 this round, filling in for Peter Fitzpatrick on Packers’ side.
Weightmans got right down to business and took the first two rubbers in straight sets, with Therese Fitzpatrick besting Midgley 11-5, 11-3, 11-9 and John Fitzpatrick defeating substitute Deegan Kerslake 11-7, 11-5, 11-6. They then came oh-so close to taking the third rubber as well, with Sefer battling it out against Cimino but walking away second best. He took the first set 11-8, Cimino the second 11-7, Sefer got back up in the third 11-8 and then Cimino levelled it 2 sets all with an 11-8 win in the fourth. The two then went head-to-head in the fifth, Cimino just inching over the line first and winning a narrow 15-13. Despite their impressive singles form, Weightmans found no luck in either doubles match, as Fitzpatrick and Sefer squared off against Cimino and Midgley and after taking the first set were beaten down by Packers, losing 14-12, 10-12, 5-11, 9-11.
Skipper Fitpatrick then proceeded to defeat Midgley in three sets 11-4, 11-5, 14-12, while Therese Fitzpatrick had a good tussle with Cimino, going down in four sets 8-11, 11-6, 6-11,10-12. Sefer then got his first single win of the night, soundly defeating Kerslake in three 11-1, 11-3, 11-3. The two Fitzpatrick siblings then teamed up for the second doubles, hoping to grab their fifth rubber but it was not to be as Packers repelled their attack and took the win. Packers won the first set 11-9, Weightmans pushed hard and got the next two 11-8, 11-9, but they just couldn’t get themselves over the line with Packers gaining the upper hand and winning 11-9, 11-7.

With the score now at 4-4, John Fitzpatrick took down Cimino without too much trouble 11-6, 11-5, 11-9 while Sefer bested Midgley, also in three 11-8, 11-9, 11-2, getting themselves the win at 6-4. In the last matchup, young gun Kerslake got himself a win by defeating Therese Fitzpatrick. He took the first set 11-6, dropped the second 10-12, but recovered well and won the next two 15-13, 11-8. A solid win against a tough opponent and well done to Kerslake for his first time playing in Pennant 2.

Final score 6 rubbers to 5 and 25 games to 15.

In the other match third placed Regional Taxation Services managed to do what no other team has been able to this season, yes they have inflicted the first defeat on ladder leader Weightmans Packaging 6-5 and RTS number two Samantha Campbell was outstanding winning three singles.
– Exposed Signage/Apparel 6 (Karly Leach Deegan Kerslake 2) d Sammy’s Slammers 5 (Ryan Hensgen 3, Koby Grace, Yen 1)
Searching for their first win Sammy’s Slammers started well with Koby Grace winning the first two games against Brenden Johnson 13-11 12-10 in two close ones before Brenden took control winning the third and fourth 11-7 11-5, the fifth was a tussle and Koby grabbed the initiative to take the match 11-7. This was the first of five five setters that would take place.
The next two singles resulted in Exposed’s Karly Leach defeating Yen Hwak in three sets and then Sammy’s skipper Ryan Hensgen outlasted his younger opponent Deegan Kerslake in four sets. This was a good win by Ryan who started the season slowly but has now been consistent over the past six rounds.
The Slammers now took a 2-1 lead after the first block of singles and when Ryan and Koby took the first game in the first doubles against Karly and Deegan there was some excitement in the camp, however Karly and Deegan settled and took control to win in four sets.

When Karly defeated Koby in straight sets Exposed Signage/Apparel had taken a 3-2 lead, two five setters then followed, Ryan had his hands full with Brenden who loves a five setter and this went right to the wire after many entertaining rallies. Ryan was able to steal the match 8-11 11-8 11-8 5-11 13-11 and in doing so levelled the match at three rubbers all.
The following match featured Exposed Deegan sitting second on the aggregate up against Yen, Deegan was having a busy night and was doubling up in pennant two. Yen has been practising hard on Mondays and he caught Deegan by surprise narrowly winning the first two games, could this be a big upset brewing, the third was close again however Deegan knowing the match was slipping away lifted to pick up the third and fourth, team mates were nervous and while Yen had chances in the fifth it was Deegan that was able to complete an excellent comeback to win 10-12 8-11 11-8 11-7 11-8 a great tussle.
Sammy’s Slammers pair Ryan and Yen needed the second doubles however it wasn’t to be as Karly and Brenden took the match in four sets 11-3 9-11 11-8 11-8. The Exposed trio now took a 5-3 lead and for the second time in the contest two five set singles matches took place.
The fist saw Sammy’s Ryan Hensgen keep his team alive by winning his third singles , this was an outstanding match against Karly and the rallies went on and on, Ryan took the first two games and as always Karly remained determined and levelled the match at two all and in a thriller it was Ryan winning the fifth 13-11 to reduce the deficit to 4-5.

Ryan had won three singles in an excellent captains’ performance. He has now moved to equal third on the singles aggregate only three from the lead.
The next game with the four points still on the line was another ripper when the busy Deegan took to the table against Koby, Koby grabbed the first game to encourage his team however Deegan grabbed the next two games the third he took by the barest of margins as Koby attempted to keep his team alive, which he did by grabbing the
fourth. The fifth was another outstanding game with both players having a chance. In the end Deegan survived to win 9-11 11-7 12-10 7-11 13-11, in doing so his team had taken the four points in what had been a real scare. To complete the match Yen defeated Brenden in straight sets 12-10 13-11 11-3.
Victory came for Exposed Signage/Apparel with Karly and Deegan winning two singles each while they also won both doubles. The Slammers had been brave in defeat, Skipper Ryan winning three singles while Koby and Yen won one each. The doubles was the issue for them.
WINNER: Exposed Signage/Apparel 6 d Sammy’s Slammers 5
Games: 25 to 21
– Regional Taxation Services 6 (Sam Campbell 3, Sabrina Fitzpatrick, Hayden Wilson 1) d Weightmans Packaging 5 (Nhat Dat, Steve Parker 2)
After nine rounds it finally has happened, top team Weightmans Packaging have lost a match. In a thriller they were defeated 5-6 by third placed Regional Taxation Services who in their last match had lost 2-9 against second team Exposed Signage/Apparel.
Samantha Campbell was the standout player in this match winning three singles and partnering Hayden Wilson to win the second doubles in five sets.
Early in the contest it appeared Weightmans Packaging were on their way to keeping their undefeated record intact when they took a 3-1 lead after Nhat Dat and Steve Parker defeated Sabrina Fitzpatrick and Sam Campbell in four sets in the first doubles.
Earlier aggregate leader Nhat Dat had his hands full with RTS three Hayden Wilson with their match going to five sets. The first four games were decided by two points in each with Hayden playing very well. In particular the fourth was notable given that Nhat was in control leading 9-3 and the match looked all over before Hayden amazingly won nine of the next ten points in an outstanding comeback to level at two games each. What an effort from Hayden. In the fifth a wary Nhat Dat took control going on to win against a brave Hayden 12-14 12-10 13-11 10-12 11-5.

In the next singles Steve Parker scored a rare victory over Sabrina Fitzpatrick 12-10 10-12 11-6 11-4.
With her team trailing 1-3 the pressure was on Sam Campbell as she lined up against Nhat Dat and what a match this was. Sam grabbed the first game with some powerful forehands while Nhat Dat took the second and third, Sam sensing a loss would leave her team 1-4 down then lifted as both players put on a great display. The fourth and fifth were close however Sam was able to maintain control and win 11-8 7-11 11-13 11-8 11-9. RTS skipper Sabrina Fitzpatrick then levelled the match by defeating Leo Parker in straight sets.
“Consistent” Steve Parker then managed to give Weightmans the lead again by defeating Hayden 11-7 11-9 14-12 in another close battle.
Regional Taxation Services were again playing catch up and now the second doubles became crucial when Sam and Hayden lined up against Nhat and Leo. This would be the third of four five set matches, Weightmans took the first and RTS the second, the third was amazing with Nhat and Leo in complete control going to a 10-1 lead before Sam and Hayden fought back and in a blink of an eye levelled the game at 10 points all, wow they had won nine points in succession however Nhat and Leo remained calm despite this surge and won the game 12-10 !!. Spurred on by this comeback Sam and Hayden took control in the fourth and fifth going on to win a topsy turvy doubles
match 8-11 11-9 10-12 11-8 11-7, the score now stood at four rubbers all with more excitement to come.
The two skippers Nhat and Sabrina now met and Weightmans again took the lead 5-4 with Nhat winning 11-7 11-7 11-7 in a match that contained many long rallies. Not for the first time on the night Regional Taxation Services number two Sam Campbell took to the table under extreme pressure , her opponent this time was Steve Parker and he calmly took the first game 11-5, Sam then bounced back and showing maturity beyond her years she was able to level the match winning in four sets 5-11 11-8 12-10 11-6 , the score now 5 rubbers all with the top team in unfamiliar territory.
The pressure was now on the two youngsters Weightmans Leo and RTS number three Hayden. Hayden was out of the blocks quickly taking the first two games, his teammates were very excited, Leo then jumped in to action and just like that he had won the third and fourth. The match now stood at five rubbers all and two games all. The fifth was a one-sided affair as Hayden who has played many a five setter this season took complete control going on to win 11-9 11-5 2-11 6-11 11-3 much to the delight of his teammates.

Like Sam, Hayden had played a key role in this first defeat of the top team. Along with this important singles, he teamed up with Sam to win the second doubles which was crucial.
For Weightmans Packaging Nhat Dat and Steve Parker won two singles each as well as the doubles they played in however their team came up one short on the night. A great team effort by Regional Taxation Services.

PENNANT FOUR:
Round nine has seen a definite separation of the Top and Bottom two Teams, with the number one team, Tankard Dental romping through the night against Dunkley Scales and the same occurred with Weightmans overwhelming win over Mallee Meats.

– Tankard Dental 9 (Leanne Wilson, Ildi Healy 3, Jakob Grzan 1) d Dunkley Scales 2 (Maria Starikov, Jenny Leach 1)
Tankard : Leanne Wilson, Ildi Healy and Jakob Grzan. Dunkley : Maria Starikov, Jenny Leach and Jake Hines.
The first match up was Jakob against Jen and this turned out to be a swinger. Jakob was red hot and Jen was simmering away, struggling to get to the boil. The two opening sets were shared, with 11 / 6 going both ways, then Jakob turned the heat on again, taking the third. With the flames leaping higher, Jen was lucky enough to smother some of Jakobs shots and sneak the Win (6/11, 11/6, 8/11, 11/6, 11/8). The following two Rubbers went the way of Tankard, with Leanne completing her match with Jake in three, although Jake threw in some tricky play throughout (11/7, 11/6, 11/7). Maria seemed to have the game in hand when she faced Leanne, but that didn’t last long, with Tankard’s Captain pulling in the last three sets to put them two up.
The first set of Doubles was a good contest, with Leanne and Ildi the better on the night against Maria and Jen, with Dunkley putting a bit of pressure on but it was never going to be enough, with Tankard’s determination (11/6, 8/11, 11/2, 15/13).
Breaking through Leanne’s game is a challenge and Jen thought she was up to it, but Leanne had other thoughts, making it her second Rubber in three sets (11/6, 11/7, 11/8). Things were becoming dire, with Tankard ahead 4 to 1 and Maria pulled out her defensive game and added Dunkley’s second Rubber, when she came up against Jakob (11/7, 11/4, 11/7). Ildi was totally focused on Wednesday and wasn’t letting anything get in her way of a win for her team. Jake once again did his best to make up some ground, but Ildi’s skills were too much (11/4, 11/9, 11/4).
Dunkley were able to squeeze out the win of one set, in the final Doubles, with Maria and Jake, battling it out against Leanne and Jakob. When you put Leanne’s skills in any mix, it’s very hard to crack through. This match was the winner for the night, bringing up Tankards 6th Rubber (11/3, 11/4, 9/11, 11/7).
Maria’s game didn’t match Leanne’s, with Leanne finishing off an amazing night, winning her three singles and being part of the two Doubles wins (11/9, 11/4, 11/7). Like I mentioned earlier, Ildi was having an excellent night. One which was far too good for Jen to cope with and this was one of her best nights for the season, winning all of her Singles and the Doubles she was involved in (11/6, 11/9, 11/4).

Jakob and Jake was so far without wins and his last match was going to be a beauty, as it was Jakobs Birthday and he was determined to leave a winner. It was fairly and evenly played by both Boys and Jakob’s left very happy, with his gift eventuating (11/5, 5/11, 11/5, 11/5).
WINNER : Tankard Dental 9 to Dunkley Scales 2.
GAMES : 29 to 11
– Weightmans Packaging 9 (Gary Leach 3, Glenn Leeson, Eddy Parker 2) d Mallee Meats 2 (Conner Burnett, Nathan Beard 1)
Weightman’s – Glenn Leeson, Gary Leach and Eddie Parker. Mallee – Curtis Crabtree (fill in Nikki Sefer), Nathan Beard and Conner Burnett.
This encounter was another white wash, with Weightman’s, who sit in second place on the Ladder, far to strong for Mallee.

The fact that Nikki was filling in and is only a casual player, may have given Weightman’s a little advantage, but just the same, their win was remarkable, with some real surprises.
Eddie took to the Table against Nathan in the initial match, with went out to four sets and saw Mallee picking up the first Rubber (12/10, 9/11,11/5, 11/8). Mallee’s Connor pulled out the first shock of the night, being a number three and knocking of Weightman’s number one Glenn. It did go out to five sets, but Connor proved his game is improving with every week (10/12, 11/5, 4/11, 11/9, 11/6). Another five setter was produced when Gary came up against Nikki. The match see sawed back and forth, with some terrific Rallies through out all sets. Gary did a tremendous job, collecting the Win over Mallee’s number one and marking up Weightman’s first Rubber (12/10, 8/11, 11/6, 9/11, 11/8).
The first Doubles was a quick affair, ending after three sets, to even the ledger, after Weightman’s took the win (11/3, 11/9, 11/2).
Nathan generated a very nice first set against Glenn, with the scores going out to 12 / 10, but the long and short of it, Glenn was too tough, which added number three for Weightman’s (12/10, 11/9, 11/5). Eddie seemed to have the wood on Nikki in their match, with his consistency making up another Rubber (11/3, 11/6, 11/9). Gary pumped out another five set blockbuster, with Connor giving him the run around in a couple of sets, this notched up Rubber number five (11/7, 3/11, 10/12, 12/10, 11/7).
Glenn and Eddie had another immaculate win, facing up to Nathan and Connor, which seemed to be over in a flash (11/5, 11/6, 11/7). This was the straw that broke the Mallee’s back, with Weightman’s penciling in their 6th win.
Unfortunately for Mallee, Weightman’s continued their unbeatable run, taking all of the next three matches. Nikki tried, but to no avail against Glenn (11/3, 11/4, 11/8).

Gary was doing a fair bit of floating after this match against Nathan, as he was somewhere on Cloud 9, leaving with 3 Singles wins and winning along with Glenn in the Doubles. I have to admit, a great effort by a great Man and I was not paid to make these comments (11/4, 3/11, 11/7, 11/8). Eddie stood up to Connor and had a successful win, after being pushed in the second set (11/6, 11/9, 11/1).
